  • Wonderful 101 Kickstarter Is About Uniting Fans, Not Raising Money, Platinum Says

The Wonderful 101 Remastered, an updated release of the previously Wii U-exclusive game, is nearing the end of its Kickstarter campaign. The game, which has earned over ¥200 million after asking for ¥5.425 million, has been the biggest gaming Kickstarter success story on the platform in some time.

However, as it turns out, the game was already a done deal before a single cent was earned through crowdfunding, and for Platinum this campaign was not about raising necessary funds so much as uniting a community of players.

Talking to Gematsu, producer Atsushi Inaba has revealed that the reason for the campaign was not because they needed the money. “The actual reason we decided to do a Kickstarter campaign was not for funding at all,” he says. “It was more about gauging interest in The Wonderful 101. This is a game we’ve always wanted to revisit at some point in time, so we thought it would be a good opportunity to bring the fans together—to unite them—and gauge interest.”

Asked to clarify what the money would be used on, Inaba says that it would largely go towards fulfilling Kickstarter rewards and stretch goals. “I don’t know if you’ve seen all the tiers and their rewards, but those cost money to produce,” he says. “The rest of the money is going towards the additional content that will be added to the game.”

“I want to clarify that we didn’t do the campaign to ‘get money’ or anything like that—that wasn’t the point of it, he continues. “The main goal was to bring the fans together, gauge interest, and find a good way to revisit and release the game.”

The Wonderful 101 Remastered is also coming to PC and PS4, although in the interview it’s clarified that it will not come to Xbox One due to the difficulty of porting to that platform.

The game still has two potential stretch goals to meet. If it earns the equivalent of US$2 million, the game will feature an additional 2D adventure section, and if it hits $2.25 million, two of the game’s music tracks will be re-recorded with a full orchestra.

Platinum Games has been busy lately. The studio is also working on Bayonetta 3, and the recently announced Project G.G., a new hero-focused action game.

  • Rainbow Six Siege Has Toned Down Ela In Its Latest Test Server Patch

Ela, an Operator added in Rainbow Six Siege‘s second year, is getting powered down a bit. Ubisoft has outlined the patch notes for the latest update done on the game’s Public Test Server, which will test out a slightly modified version of Ela’s Scorpion EVo3 gun.

Here are the four changes made to Ela in this patch.

    • Reduced recoil now only applies to the first 11 bullets.
    • Increased resettle time after burst firing
    • Faster uptime to increase vertical recoil
    • Slightly increased recoil + spread

As the post says, since Ela was buffed in a recent Year 4 Season 4.3 patch, there’s been a huge spike in her being picked, and her win ratio has gone up a little too much. These changes will make her slightly less deadly, and give players a better sense of balance.

Berlinale 2020: French Documentary ‘Little Girl’ is Inspiringly Beautiful

    Little Girl Review

This is one of the most beautiful documentaries I have ever seen. Without a doubt. I need to start with that statement. Everyone’s personal definition of what is “beautiful” is different, but I think this is one time we can all agree that this film is objectively beautiful. Little Girl is yet another festival film that I can’t get out of my head, and will likely never forget, for a number of beguiling reasons. The way the filmmakers tell this story so sensitively, with so much care and with so much integrity and so much reassurance, is part of it. But it’s also just a staggering film about one young girl who is beautiful inside and out. And the filmmakers are telling her story so that we can learn from her, so that we can push society forward by learning to evolve our compassion. And push us to step away from toxic stereotypes that have plagued this planet for far too long. ›››

  • Noah Schnapp in Official Trailer for Young Aspiring Chef Drama ‘Abe’

Noah Schnapp in Official Trailer for Young Aspiring Chef Drama ‘Abe’

    Abe Film Trailer

“You are mixing ‘fusion’ with ‘confusion’.” Blue Fox Entertainment has unveiled the trailer for a fun family film titled simply Abe, which originally premiered at the Sundance Film Festival last year in the Sundance Kids section. Abe is a 12-year-old boy from Brooklyn, an aspiring chef who is half-Israeli, half-Palestinian. He decides to cook a meal to unite his mixed family, but everything goes wrong. Surprise, surprise. Starring talented young actor Noah Schnapp as Abe, and a full cast including Seu Jorge, Mark Margolis, Arian Moayed, Dagmara Dominczyk, Salem Murphy, Tom Mardirosian, Daniel Oreskes, plus Gero Camilo. It’s rather nice to see Seu Jorge in this as a chef he look up to, smart casting for that role. And the food in here looks delicious. I want to eat it all! This also reminds me of the story of Chef Flynn. Get a taste. ›››

  • Review: One Punch Man: A Hero Nobody Knows – You Too Can Defeat Any Enemy with the Press of a Button

    One hit wonder.

Starting life as a viral webcomic back in 2009, One Punch Man is a celebration and a send-up of superhero fiction. It’s creator, aptly named One, envisaged the story of a hero who was already the best. Tired of being able to defeat every enemy he faces with one punch, protagonist Saitama worries more about missing the supermarket cabbage discounts than impending world threats. The joke is that while our eponymous hero’s power level has no equal, he is so inept at life that everyone else thinks he’s some wannabe loser. A world full of ridiculous heroes and terrifying monsters cause city-razing destruction around him, all the while Saitama struggles to pay for his next meal.

Following in the wake of a wildly successful anime adaptation, Spike Chunsoft’s One Punch Man: A Hero Nobody Knows, offers a curiously doubled-edged proposition. The characters and stories in this universe are so hilarious and cool that playing them in a game is a tantalising prospect. However, how can a story, in which one hero can defeat anything with a single hit, be a sustainable experience?

  • There’s An Awesome The Last of Us Board Game Room at PlayStation HQ

    Dice roll.

PlayStation is a behemoth of a brand, so you bet your bottom dollar the organisation has some amazing boardrooms. Fortunately, the firm has given us a look at the interior of one of its offices, which is decorated with a dazzling The Last of Us board game-style wallpaper.

In it we see famous locations from the PlayStation exclusive game, as well as characters and items. It’s unclear how this would actually function as a board game – it’s more there to look good – but we wouldn’t be surprised if someone eventually took this concept and transformed into a tabletop title.

  • GDC Postponed Due To Coronavirus Concerns; E3 Organizer The ESA ‘Watching The Situation Very Closely’

GDC Postponed Due To Coronavirus Concerns; E3 Organizer The ESA ‘Watching The Situation Very Closely’

The Game Developers Conference, which was set to take place March 16 to 20 in San Francisco, Calif. has been postponed by its organizers Informa due to concerns surrounding the global spread of the coronavirus COVID-19. The conference, which started in 1988, draws attendance from an international pool of developers, publishers, press, and more.

You can read the statement from the organizers of GDC in its entirety below.

“After close consultation with our partners in the game development industry and community around the world, we’ve made the difficult decision to postpone the Game Developers Conference this March.

Having spent the past year preparing for the show with our advisory boards, speakers, exhibitors, and event partners, we’re genuinely upset and disappointed not to be able to host you at this time.

We want to thank all our customers and partners for their support, open discussions and encouragement. As everyone has been reminding us, great things happen when the community comes together and connects at GDC. For this reason, we fully intend to host a GDC event later in the summer. We will be working with our partners to finalize the details and will share more information about our plans in the coming weeks.

For more information, please visit our Frequently Asked Questions page.”

The news comes following several companies, including Sony, Microsoft, EA, and Activision-Blizzard, deciding to pull their attendance from GDC 2020 due to concerns surrounding the global spread of COVID-19. In addition, an email sent to those who purchased or otherwise acquired a badge to GDC 2020 says, “[all] current paid registrants will be receiving a full refund within 4-6 weeks.” The FAQ page linked above says that those who booked hotel reservations inside the official GDC room block will not have any fees or penalties when they cancel their rooms.

The Entertainment Software Association (ESA) confirms to Game Informer that it is keeping on eye on the evolving situation with regards to E3, its annual June event in Los Angeles, Calif. You can see The ESA’s statement provided to us in its entirety below.

“Everyone is watching the situation very closely.  We will continue to be vigilant, as our first priority is the health, wellness and safety of all of our exhibitors and attendees. Given what we know at this time, we are moving ahead full speed with E3 2020 planning. Exhibit and registration sales are on track for an exciting show in June.”

The annual Game Developers Conference brings together members of the video game industry for a week of panels, informative talks, demos, and networking. As of February 24, the World Health Organization (WHO) reports approximately 80,000 confirmed infections of the coronavirus COVID-19, with its risk assessment set at “High” on a global level.

Even prior to this news, the spread of COVID-19 has affected the games industry through other convention cancellations, delays of games, and reports of Nintendo Switch shortages.
