The best PS4 Pro prices, deals and bundles for Christmas 2018

So you’re thinking about PS4 Pro deals or maybe a bundle? Well we can help you out there especially as you’ve come to say hello around the Christmas sales. This is a fine time of year to grab the best prices as you can get at least one free game with the console compared to last week and save some money on the console itself too. Maybe you’re upgrading from your older PS4 so you can dive into 4K gaming. Or maybe you’ve never had a PS4 and are thinking you may as well start with the best. All solid choices, especially if you’re already set with a 4K TV, even better if it has HDR too.

There are some fantastic-looking games out now to really make a PS4 Pro shine, with this year alone rocking with Spider-Man, God of War and Detroit: Become Human and things are looking bright later on too with Red Dead Redemption 2, The Last of Us Part 2 and more set to drop jaws around the world once again.

You’ll find all of the latest and best PS4 Pro prices from the big name stores in our comparison chart below. There’s not too much difference in price between retailers at this time of year, but we’re constantly on the lookout for the latest deals and bundles. Looking to buy in Australia? So keep this page bookmarked to stay informed of the latest PS4 Pro bundles when they arrive. If you’re looking for more information on the PS4 Pro, take a look at our handy Q&A below the bundles.

    PS4 Pro bundle deals (USA)

Worthwhile PS4 Pro bundles have been pretty much non-existent in the US for the last few months. The PS4 Pro on its own has seemingly sold out at the regular $399 price, meaning we’ve only seen units for sale via third-party sellers on sites like Amazon/Walmart for prices often at least $40 more than usual. This long after release, we’re not cool with that you shouldn’t be either. As a bare minimum, you want at least one game with the console for $399, ideally less in the next few months. The only decent PS4 Pro bundle today is the Read Dead Redemption 2 one we’ve just added below, don’t expect stock to last long on this one though.

    Cheap PlayStation Plus deals

If you’re buying a PS4 Pro, you’ll probably need a cheap PlayStation Plus deal too. PlayStation Plus (aka PS Plus or PS+) allows you to play PS4 games online, along with access to the Instant Game Collection, a bunch of free games for PS4, PS3 and Vita each month. The default price for a year is £40. We’ve shopped around for you though and found a range of prices. So check out our guide of you want the best PlayStation Plus deals.

    What is the PS4 Pro?

Essentially, the PS4 Pro is an upgrade of the PS4, rather than a ‘next-gen’ console. The keywords to take in from the PS4 Pro are 4K and HDR. The new machine will allow game developers to include 4K options in their games, so expect the like of Uncharted 4, Call of Duty: Infinite Warfare, Days Gone, Horizon: Zero Dawn and more to look even better on a 4K TV.

HDR, or High Dynamic Range is the other buzzword to be excited about as the PS4 Pro will allow for extra detail to be seen on a range of games and also a wider range of colors not usually displayed by traditional HD TVs.

Will my old PS4 games work on PS4 Pro?

Absolutely. If you’re planning on upgrading to a PS4 Pro from an older PS4, all of your games will still work. Not every title will be patched to take advantage of the new 4K/HDR capabilities, but the default upscaling (if you have a 4K TV) will more than likely see some improvement to the visuals and the improved console power may give the frame-rate a boost on some titles.

What else can I watch in 4K/HDR on PS4 Pro?

The PS4 Pro is compatible with 4K and HDR, and the content options for both are increasing all the time on services like YouTube and Netflix.

    Does the PS4 Pro support 4K Blu-rays?

No. This was a surprise if we’re honest, especially as the new Xbox One S console does. It’s a bit of a gamble for Sony, but at the same time, 4K Blu-rays are very expensive for now and many consumers look to digital services to provide their 4K movies and TV content.

    Do I need a 4K TV to run a PS4 Pro?

No, the PS4 Pro will still work on a regular 1080p TV, you won’t get the benefits of upscaling or HDR though. You may see a slim amount of extra detail, or frame-rate boost, but we wouldn’t expect a massive leap.

If you are thinking of buying a 4K TV soon, then it’s probably a good idea to splash out on the PS4 Pro instead of the regular or new PS4 Slim as it’ll future proof you for a while. Be sure to look out for a TV that supports HDR too, in order to take full advantage of the PS4 Pro’s capabilities.

Will PlayStation VR be better on the PS4 Pro?

Early reports say yes. The PlayStation VR frame-rate is better on PS4 Pro and the resolution gets a bit of a bump too. PlayStation VR will certainly work on the older PS4s, you don’t need a PS4 Pro to get involved there.

Does the PS4 Pro have optical audio support?

Yes! The optical audio output has been removed from the PS4 Slim though, which is a massive shame. PS4 Pro owners though will still be able to use optical connections for their soundbars and sound systems.

What are the best games on PS4 Pro?

We’ve dived through our back catalog of PS4 games that have received a PS4 Pro update patch to see which ones look the best and have a noticeable difference. Take a look at our extensive feature – The best PS4 Pro games.

  • Locked Character Roster In Smash Bros. Ultimate Raises Concerns About Tournament Play

    An organiser’s nightmare.

For the majority of players, unlocking new fighters in Super Smash Bros. games is an exciting process. In the case of Super Smash Bros. Ultimate on the Switch, it’s got some players concerned about tournament play. Due to the sizable roster of 70 fighters currently available in the game, unless you’re resorting to particular methods to unlock each of these characters as fast as possible, it’s going to take a while before you can play as every single one of them.

Some of the game’s fanbase finds this to be a worrying sign for lower-end tournaments, that might not have Nintendo officials present to presumably unlock every character in the game with their magical powers. A user by the name of ‘KillstealWolf’ on ResetEra, raised the potential problem tied to tournament play, that could make these types of events a nightmare for organisers, who would potentially have to unlock characters across multiple units for larger-sized events:

  • Random: Avoid Water If You're Playing As One Of These Fighters In Super Smash Bros. Ultimate

    Struggling to stay afloat.

Since the release of Super Smash Bros. Ultimate last week, more and more fans have apparently started to realise how certain fighters in the latest entry take water damage. If you play Splatoon 2, you’ll know how water is lethal to Inklings when they make contact with it. In Ultimate, if an Inkling fighter touches the water during a battle, it will take damage until it jumps back out.

  • Nintendo Taking A “Big Step Forward” Embracing Content Creators, According To Head Of YouTube Gaming

    Changing times.

Nintendo has received criticism in recent years for not embracing content creators. In an effort diffuse the situation, the Japanese company recently issued a new set of guidelines to make it easier for these same people to monetise any videos featuring Nintendo games. It will also be closing down its controversial creators program at the end of this year and the website for the program will be shut down in March 2019.

During a recent interview with VentureBeat, Ryan Wyatt – the global head of gaming at YouTube Gaming – said the online video platform had done a lot on its end to improve, mentioning how Nintendo’s recent announcement was proof the situation had progressed:

Download and video game trademarks included.

  • Review: Guacamelee! 2 – A Fun-Packed And Often Relentless Metroidvania

    An action-platformer with real punch.

It’s a ballsy developer that starts a game with a boss fight, but that’s precisely what developer Drinkbox Games has done in Guacamelee! 2. The opening scrap is used as a clever device for recapping the climax of the original game, as well as serving as a catch-up for those of us who either didn’t play or finish 2013’s Guacamelee (or the comprehensive Switch remix, Guacamelee! Super Turbo Championship Edition). It also sets the tone for a colourful Metroidvania platformer that’s deeply beholden to, yet also a steady progression from, its predecessor.

Seven years on from the events of the original, Guacamelee! 2 finds our hero Juan in a state of retired bliss, living with his family in peaceful Pueblucho. On an errand to purchase more avocados (which he seems to have been overindulging in), Juan discovers the need to re-don his mystical luchador mask and face a fresh inter-dimensional threat.

  • NIS America Brings Lapis x Labyrinth To The West In 2019

    Stack, raid and get paid.

The ‘Kinda Funny Video Game Showcase’ was able to include a Nippon Ichi Software announcement with the assistance of NIS America. If you’re one who embraces the grind in role-playing games, the dungeon-diving action title Lapis x Labyrinth is now officially arriving here locally on the Nintendo Switch at some point in 2019. The news isn’t all that surprising, consider there is less than a month left of 2018 and we haven’t heard about the international release of this title since September.

During the showcase, NIS America shared the western announcement trailer for the game, which you can view above. If you missed the previous announcement, the game places players in the center of a high-octane treasure-hunting quest. Here, danger leads to bigger and better rewards. All you have to do is slay hoards of monsters and overcome many traps to gain riches beyond your wildest imagination. Below is the full rundown:

  • Halo Co-Creator Reveals First Image From New Game

Halo Co-Creator Reveals First Image From New Game

V1 Interactive, the studio founded by Halo co-creator Marcus Lehto, has revealed a first look at the team’s new game. As posted on the developer’s website, the image shows a city/settlement that has presumably seen better days.

The image’s caption says that the picture shows just a “glimpse into a small corner of the larger world we’re building.” More information about V1’s untitled game will be revealed “soon,” the developer said. “We’ve still got some miles to tread before we can pull the curtain all the way back, so stay tuned!”

    No Caption Provided

The image apparently contains some clues and mysteries. Someone zoomed in on a creature walking on the fallen structure on the right-hand side of the image, and Lehto–presumably joking–said this is the protagonist from the game.

Whatever this game is, it will be published by Private Division, which is the newly established independent games label run by Red Dead Redemption and Grand Theft Auto parent company Take-Two. Private Division is also publishing The Outer Worlds, which is the intriguing-looking sci-fi RPG from the Microsoft-owned Fallout: New Vegas developer Obsidian, along with the super-ambitious PC and console game Ancestors: The Humankind Odyssey from Assassin’s Creed creator Patrice Desilets.

Another co-creator of the Halo universe, Alex Seropian, is working on a new game as well. Seropian’s studio, Industrial Toys, was acquired by Electronic Arts, and CFO Blake Jorgensen said the project is “innovative.” But it’s probably not launching soon.

What do you make of the first image from V1’s new game? It’s giving me some Destiny vibes. Let us know your thoughts in the comments below!

  • Farming Simulator 19 Sells 1 Million Copies After 10 Days, Sets New Franchise Sales Record

The newest Farming Simulator game got off to a strong start. Farming Simulator 19 sold more than 1 million combined physical and digital copies over its first 10 days, it was announced today. A press release points out that the success is particularly notable given that Farming Simulator 19’s release date–November 20–came amid a busy season for blockbuster releases.

1 million copies sold in 10 days represents a new franchise sales record, according the CEO of developer Giants Software, Christian Amman. “It’s incredible to see the impact of the team’s hard work. Farming Simulator 19 offers so many new opportunities and our players are thrilled about them. Never before has a Farming Simulator game reached the one million mark so quickly and we are proud and happy that so many players join us on this amazing journey.”

Publisher Focus Home Interactive COO John Bert added that the company is “extremely proud” of Giants Software, adding that the new sales milestone reflects the game’s commitment to quality. Farming Simulator 19 boasts a “mostly positive” aggregate review score on Steam after more than 4,500 reviews.

New for the 2019 edition of Farming Simulator was a “complete overhaul” of the game’s graphics engine, which Giants Software says delivers the “most striking and immersive visuals and effects.” The game also adds a major new license in John Deere, along with a number of new locations in America and Europe to create and expand a farm. The game also adds rideable horses for the first time.

Farming Simulator 19 is out now on PlayStation 4, Xbox One, and PC.

  • Avengers Endgame Trailer Obliterates Previous Record

The brand-new trailer for Avengers: Endgame was unsurprisingly very popular. The video, which was released on Friday morning, become the “most-viewed trailer in history.” It picked up 289 million views in its first 24 hours across all channels.

That is well ahead of Avengers: Infinity War’s first trailer, which tallied 230 million views over its first day earlier this year. It’s yet another success for Disney, which owns Marvel, as the media giant’s new trailer Lion King picked up 224.6 million first-day views just recently.

To the greatest fans in the world, thank you for being there from the beginning til the endgame and making Marvel Studios’ #AvengersEndgame the most viewed trailer in history with 289M views in 24 hours! pic.twitter.com/WqWRzENmI1

    — The Avengers (@Avengers) December 8, 2018

The new Avengers trailer came after what fans thought was a long wait, even though Disney/Marvel never said when the trailer might arrive. The new trailer confirmed the movie’s name, Endgame, a title that makes a lot of sense given what is expected to happen after the dramatic, cliff-hanger ending of Infinity War.

The Avengers: Endgame trailer also of course raises a lot of questions, like what happened to Captain America’s beard, how much time has passed since Infinity War, how Scott Lang seemingly got out of the Quantum Realm, and more. Check out GameSpot’s rundown of all the big questions here.
