First Trailer for Yorgos Lanthimos’ Short Film ‘Nimic’ with Matt Dillon

    Nimic Short Film Trailer

“It is always very exciting to be invited to think outside the box and wrestle with stimulating ideas.” Yep. There’s a new film by the great Greek filmmaker Yorgos Lanthimos premiering this month! But it’s just a short film, not a new feature (he’s already working on an adaptation of Pop. 1280 next). Following the ten Academy Awards nominations (and one win!) for The Favourite, Lanthimos made this short titled Nimic. It’s premiering at the Locarno Film Festival this month and it will hopefully get a release soon. Matt Dillon plays a professional cellist who has an encounter with a stranger on the subway, which has unexpected and far-reaching ramifications on his life. The cast includes Daphné Patakia, Susan Elle, Sara Lee, Eugena Lee, Rowan Kay, Anvo Kyle, Lizzy Ceniceros, Florencia Mariotti, and Jeffrey Raines. The short runs 12 minutes and was produced by Rekorder Berlin. The film is described as “a small but effective thriller in an aseptic and simple setting with, as usual, an intriguing formal structure.” Get a first taste of it below. ›››

  • Talking Point: What Are You Playing This Weekend? – Issue 284

    Olympic effort.

Premier League football has finally made its long awaited return, and that’s about to eat into our weekends once more. The good news is that the video game release calendar is still relatively dry, so it’ll be backlogs all around before the heavy hitters arrive later in the month.

    Sammy Barker, Editor

I imported a copy of SEGA’s Tokyo 2020 title from Japan, and it’s proving brilliant fun so far. I’ve missed the arcade sports games of yore, but this feels like a return to the Dreamcast days I’m so nostalgic for.

Adorable Spyro-Themed Controller Coming To Nintendo Switch

PowerA, a video game peripheral manufacturer, has revealed an upcoming Spyro-themed Nintendo Switch controller that is now available for pre-order through Amazon.

The controller, which releases on August 31 (just a few days before Spyro Reignited Trilogy comes to Switch), is officially licensed by Nintendo and gives players the ability to map controls to the two triggers on the back.

Aside from its snazzy design, it features Bluetooth connectivity but no rumble or NFC compatibility (basically, you can’t scan Amiibos with it). The controller is powered by AA batteries, as well.

Spyro Reignited Trilogy comes to Switch on September 3. It released last year on other platforms, PS4 and Xbox One, and you can check out our review here. For more, read about how Activision sees value in continuing to create remasters as well as new games for franchises like Crash Bandicoot and Spyro.

  • Annapurna Interactive Says “We’re Not Going Anywhere” After Concerns Of Imminent Bankruptcy

Annapurna Interactive Says “We’re Not Going Anywhere” After Concerns Of Imminent Bankruptcy

In just under three years since its inception, Annapurna Interactive has received an array of awards and praise from critics for publishing titles like What Remains of Edith Finch, Outer Wilds, and Florence. Despite these accolades, however, its parent company Annapurna Pictures is in trouble.

Film company Annapurna Pictures was founded by Megan Ellison, the seventh wealthiest person on the planet, and has made a name for itself in Hollywood as a successful indie studio that produced films like Her (2013) and Zero Dark Thirty (2012), as well as distributed films such as Sorry to Bother You (2018).

However, recent Annapurna films struggled at the box office, like The Sisters Brothers and Destroyer. Annapurna Pictures also dropped two projects last year including the Jennifer Lopez movie Hustlers.

To make matters worse, domestic marketing president Marc Weinstock and film chief Chelsea Barnard departed the company. These blows, according to Hollywood Reporter, could be some factors as to why Annapurna Pictures is currently exploring bankruptcy.

On Twitter, Annapurna’s games division, Annapurna Interactive, has voiced that they are “not going anywhere” after concerned fans reached out to the developer.

Following the press coverage about how Annapurna is amid restructuring deals with banks, Ellison wrote a memo to all her staff stating that this “not uncommon” and that it’s business as usual for the company. Read the full message below.

Restructuring deals with financial institutions is not uncommon, yet the process is usually handled without a spotlight on it. Fortunately/unfortunately, people like to write about me and my family,” Ellison wrote.

That said, it is of tremendous importance to me that you all know we are as committed as ever to this company and are in full support of our future. Regardless of whatever comes out in the press, the truth is that we are well on our continued path towards success. There will always be speculation, misinformation and personal jabs in the press—that’s part of the business. But know, none of that matters to me. What does is your sense of security and protecting the special community and culture at Annapurna. I believe in what we make and have no intention of stopping any time soon.

We’ve reached out to Annapurna for comment, though we haven’t received a response yet. If and when we do, we’ll update this article with the necessary details.

  • Turok 2 On Nintendo Switch Doesn’t Include Multiplayer

    Hunting for answers.

When a listing for Turok 2: Seeds of Evil appeared on Nintendo’s UK website at the end of last month, oddly was no mention of the game’s multiplayer options. Now that the game is out in the wild, it has been confirmed the Switch eShop version doesn’t include the classic split-screen mode or the online and cross-play modes other modern iterations of the game do.

This is a significant omission, so what’s going on? GameXplain got in contact with the developer Nightdive to find out. Here’s what it had to say:

  • Trademarks Hint At A Game Boy Clone From The Aces At Analogue

    FPGA or bust?

Analogue is responsible for some of the most accurate hardware clones money can buy, having already released systems that emulate the performance of the NES, SNES and Mega Drive at a hardware level, bringing reference-quality emulation to a burgeoning retro market.

Having created FPGA-based clones of the leading 16-bit consoles, many have been waiting expectantly to see what Analogue does next. A recent trademark filing may have given the game away; the company has filed trademarks for a handheld console called the Analogue Pocket, as well as another mystery system called the Analogue 8.
