    Jukebox mode.

  • Review: Ancestors Legacy – An Impressive, Robust Console RTS

    Generational talent.

As recent as last console generation, an RTS on console – with the exception of Halo Wars – was pretty much guaranteed to be a nightmarish experience. There are just too many systems and too many things to monitor to be able to successfully transfer the genre to a controller. Fast forward a few more years and now it’s commonplace to find not just functional console RTS games but damn good ones. Enter Ancestors Legacy, a title released on Steam in 2018, but always with the intent of hitting consoles.

An RTS with a Viking slant, Ancestors Legacy offers up a robust but delicately streamlined title that works exceedingly well with a controller. Like many RTS titles, the campaigns – of which there are eight, spread across four factions – serve as glorified tutorials for the online and Skirmish modes. Playing as one of the Vikings, Slavs, Anglo-Saxons, or Germans, you can work your way through the adequate but not overly impressive stories. Or you can compete in up to 6-player matches, with a wide array of sliders and options to customise your Skirmish experience. As you’d expect, the factions come with different pros, cons, and hero characters to make the most of, so choose wisely.

  • Rebel Galaxy Outlaw Review

In spacefaring sci-fi shows and movies – eg Star Wars and Battlestar Galactica – there are two very different kinds of space combat: the slug-fests where battleships duke it out with massive broadsides, and the fast, twitchy dogfighting of fighters buzzing around them. 2015’s Rebel Galaxy is an excellent RPG built around the former, and now its prequel spin-off, Rebel Galaxy Outlaw, is an action game that specializes in the latter. It’s a flashy, modern revival of the gameplay style of classics like Wing Commander: Privateer and Freelancer, and it even all but eliminates the most annoying part of dogfighting with a creative and entirely optional piloting assist. The campaign missions are stretched over an open region of space that’s probably two sizes too large, but there’s more than enough going on to make Rebel Galaxy Outlaw a stellar single-player game.

  • Splinter Cell Might Come Back in an Unexpected Way

Despite not having a mainline game in some time, Ubisoft hasn’t forgotten about Splinter Cell. Even Ubisoft CEO Yves Guillemot still talks about a possible return for Sam Fisher, but it might not be on a traditional video game platform.

Speaking with Chinese video game publication, Gamer Sky, Guillemot spoke briefly about a possible new Splinter Cell game. However, he stressed that any new Splinter Cell title from Ubisoft could be in the form of an experiment on different devices.

“On Splinter Cell there will be some new type of experiences, but more on different devices,” Guillemot said in a video interview. “So, we are working a lot on the brand today to come back at one point.”

  • Gris, One Of 2018’s Most Beautiful Games, Comes To iOS This Month

Gris, last year’s tremendous indie darling, is coming to iOS devices later this month. The game will release on the App Store on August 22.

The game, which released on Switch and PC late last year, charmed critics with its extraordinary visuals, smart puzzles and engaging narrative. In his 9/10 review of the PC version, Tom Mc Shea praised the game for its “incredible artistic design”, “freeing sense of movement”, and “razor focus”.

Gris is a game about a young woman who experiences a metaphorical journey through a fractured land. It’s a puzzle platformer without any dialog, and finishing it generally takes between three and five hours.

Now the game is coming to mobile a new audience will be able to play through it. Preorders are now live on the App Store, where the game carries an asking price of $4.99. This is significantly below the $16.99 the game costs on Steam and the Nintendo eShop, although how effectively the game controls with a touch screen remains to be seen.

Gris will run on the iPhone 5S and up, as well as on most iPad models, as long as they’re running iOS 10.0 or later. It weighs in at 2.9GB.

  • MediEvil’s PS4 Remake Massively Upgraded in Off-Screen Footage

    Sir Dan’s the man.

The last time we saw MediEvil’s anticipated PlayStation 4 remake, it was looking rough to say the least. It looks like developer Other Ocean Interactive has invested some serious effort behind-the-scenes, though, as the title appears pretty polished in this off-screen footage from Brazilian convention Game XP 2019.

While it’s not direct-feed, the framerate appears much slicker, while the visuals have been bumped up to boot. It’s perhaps worth remembering that this is still very much a remake, so the occasionally cumbersome gameplay of the original has been retained. Nevertheless, this looks much closer to what we expected it to be all along, and we’re really looking forward to its launch in late October.

  • Hourglass Is a First Person Puzzler Inspired by The Witness and RiME

And it could come to PS4.

Remember Ratchet & Clank: A Crack in Time? The PlayStation 3 action platformer had a subset of levels featuring the metallic sidekick, in which you recorded copies of yourself to help get through various puzzle rooms. If you wanted a whole game of these time-twisting puzzles, you might want to keep an eye on Hourglass.

Inspired by the likes of The Witness, Portal, and RiME, it’s set in a mysterious, alternate version of ancient Egypt. • Cooking Mama: Cookstar Brings Both Vegetarian Meals And Blockchain Technology To Nintendo Switch

Cooking Mama: Cookstar is a new game in the cooking series that started on the Nintendo DS back in 2006. It will be the eleventh Cooking Mama game, and the announcement frames it as a reboot. The last game in the series was Cooking Mama: Sweet Shop for the 3DS.

Cooking Mama: Cookstar is due to arrive this fall on Nintendo Switch, and will be the first console game to integrate blockchain technology.

Although this was actually announced back in February, it went under the radar until now, when a listing on the Australian Classification website alerted folks to the game’s existence. The game, originally called Cooking Mama: Coming Home to Mama, seemingly went through a name change at some point.

“Each purchased copy of the game will have unique IDs which will be managed directly through the game’s internal wallet storage,” the announcement read. “Players will be able to focus on Cooking Mama’s user experience rather than cryptographic key management.”

This will be used to make every copy of the game “subtly different and personal to a user”, allowing the game to “change expression algorithms for characters, ingredients and cooking methods.”

Of course, since this press release came out in February, it’s possible that these plans have changed.

Beyond this, the real meat of the announcement – pardon the pun – is the addition of a new, optional vegetarian mode, which will allow players to ditch meat in favor of meatless recipes. This is the first game in the series to do so, and aims to make the game more palatable to potential vegetarian fans.

Players will be able to switch between and cook in both ‘traditional’ and ‘vegetarian’ modes. Cooking Mama: Cookstar will use a mix of motion gestures and traditional controls in its recipes.

Trine 4: The Nightmare Prince will release on October 8, and we’ve got a new trailer to go alongside the announcement. The game is coming to Nintendo Switch, PS4, Xbox One and PC.

On the same day, Trine: Ultimate Collection will release, physically bundling all four games in the series. Trine 4 will retail for $29.99, while the Ultimate Collection will cost $49.99 on all systems.

    The Ultimate Edition will include:

    • Trine Series Original Soundtrack (download code)
    • Trine 4 Digital Art Book (download code)
    • Collector’s Reversible Cover Sheet
    • Physical Trine 4 World Map

The physical edition of Trine 4 will also come with the world map.

The trailer above shows off the numerous additions made to the fourth game in the series, including new combat options, new skills to use, and the new four player mode. Previous Trine games cut you off at three players, and this is our first look at how this game will handle a fourth.

Trine 4 follows on from 2015’s divisive Trine 3: The Artifacts of Power, but is returning to the 2.5D gameplay style of the first two games in the series. Our impressions of the game so far have been positive.

Players will be able to get their hands on Trine 4: The Nightmare Prince in just under two months.

Full Trailer for Joe Begos’ Vampire Film ‘Bliss’ Starring Dora Madison

    Bliss Trailer

“Somethin’ came over me and it all just started pouring out of me…” Dark Sky Films has revealed the full-length official trailer for a psychedelic, bloody vampire film titled Bliss. We first posted the teaser trailer for this earlier in the year just before its Tribeca Film Festival premiere, and it’s arriving in theaters / on VOD later next month. The synopsis describes this without the horror: A brilliant painter turns to anything she can to complete her masterpiece, spiraling into a hallucinatory hellscape of drugs, sex, and murder. But it’s actually a vampire film. “As someone who has never been able to control her vices in the first place, Dezzy is quickly and violently consumed by this bloodlust.” Starring Dora Madison as Dezzy, along with Tru Collins, Rhys Wakefield, Jeremy Gardner, Graham Skipper, and George Wendt. This looks seriously all-out crazy, a cult classic in the making (if not already). The graininess here really packs a punch. ›››
