  • Demon’s Souls Remaster Rumours Just Won’t Go Away

    The soul still burns.

Ah, good ol’ Demon’s Souls, eh? Before the series became a colossal hit, Sony actually funded the cult From Software role-playing game – although it famously passed on publishing it outside of its native Japan. The title went on to become a classic, of course, and there’s been rumours for a while that the platform holder’s planning some kind of remaster – in fact, we’ve heard it on the grapevine, too.

The rumours just won’t go away either. Speaking on the Sacred Symbols podcast, PlayStation sage Colin Moriarty admitted that he had expected the title to be announced during this week’s State of Play: “There was one game in particular, a remaster coming out for PlayStation 4, that I thought they were going to announce today, but they didn’t. I don’t know what they are waiting for with that one. Let’s just say the soul still burns with that one.”

  • Soapbox: How Sony’s Server Shutdown Rallied Naughty Dog Fans into Trophy Hunting Action

    A Trophy hunter’s end.

In recent years, Sony has had the habit of shutting down its multiplayer servers, especially with its first-party PlayStation 3 games. The worst thing about not being able to play a substantial part of these games anymore is the fact that it renders the multiplayer Trophies unobtainable after the servers are shutdown. In May 2019, Naughty Dog announced that the multiplayer servers for some of its biggest games – Uncharted 2, Uncharted 3, and The Last of Us (PS3) – would be shut down on 3rd September that year.

As an avid Trophy hunter myself, this sent me into a frenzy as I looked up the Trophy lists for each game and whether or not it was easy to obtain the Platinum Trophy. The only two multiplayer Trophies required for the Platinum Trophies for both Uncharted 2 and 3 were ‘Thrillseeker’ and ‘Buddy System’ which requires the player to complete one competitive multiplayer game and one co-operative multiplayer game, respectively. While that was easy enough, both games had an onslaught of additional multiplayer DLC Trophies. These weren’t required for the Platinum Trophy, but in the case of Uncharted 3, my Trophy list would only show a 51 per cent completion score. Like many others, I wanted that 100 per cent completion.

  • Spider-Man Is Returning To The MCU As Disney And Sony Strike A Deal

Spider-Man Is Returning To The MCU As Disney And Sony Strike A Deal

Sony and Disney announced today the two companies have come to terms to keep Spider-Man in the Marvel Cinematic Universe for a third solo film. The news comes following last month’s announcement that Sony and Marvel parent company Disney could not strike a deal to keep the webslinger, which has been licensed to Sony for two decades, in the Marvel Cinematic Universe alongside the Avengers.

According to Variety’s report, the deal was finalized last night, with the likes of Sony Pictures chairman Tom Rothman, Marvel Studios president Kevin Feige, and Walt Disney Studios co-chairs Alan Horn and Alan Bergman involved in the negotiations. Originally, Disney sought a 50/50 financing deal, which Sony rejected, causing the initial rift in August. According to the report, the new deal will see Disney lending Feige, the chief architect of the MCU, as producer in exchange for approximately 25 percent of profits from the film. Disney will also keep its merchandising rights and finance around 25 percent of the film.

Spider-Man, played by Tom Holland, first appeared in the Marvel Cinematic Universe in 2016’s Captain America: Civil War. His role in that film was brief, but impactful, showing a Peter Parker inspired by Brian Michael Bendis’ Ultimate Spider-Man fighting alongside and against the likes of Iron Man, Captain America, Black Panther, and more. Since that debut, Holland has reprised that role in four additional films in the MCU: Spider-Man: Homecoming, Avengers: Infinity War, Avengers: Endgame, and Spider-Man: Far From Home. Prior to Spider-Man joining the MCU, the character was played by Tobey Maguire in the Sam Raimi-directed trilogy, and Andrew Garfield in two Amazing Spider-Man films directed by Marc Webb. Both of those film series existed solely in Sony’s superhero universe.

The third solo Spider-Man film in the Marvel Cinematic Universe is set to hit theaters on July 16, 2021. In addition to Feige, Amy Pascal, who produced the first two Spider-Man MCU films, will also produce.

  • Hands On: Ghost Recon: Breakpoint’s Open Beta Runs Much Better on PS4

    But it’s not perfect.

We’re intrigued by Ghost Recon: Breakpoint. Ubisoft’s upcoming third-person tactical shooter is more The Division 2 than its predecessor Ghost Recon: Wildlands, and it creates an experience that feels a lot like a Game as a Service would but in a setting that is more than happy to accommodate just the single player. This fact took us off-guard earlier this month when we checked out the game’s closed beta, but we’re back a handful of weeks later ready to dive into the open beta and understand what really makes this sequel tick.

Content-wise, this offering is very, very similar to what was on offer during the title’s closed beta. You can progress the story a little bit further with a couple of extra missions and there are two further regions to explore, but with the game’s early access launch just a few days away now, we’re saving those quests for the final version. The main reason we chose to download the open beta was to see how the game runs after a bit more polish and tweaking, and the results were obvious the moment we touched down on the island of Auroa.
