  • How the TechRadar team are keeping active and (hopefully) fit in lockdown

How the TechRadar team are keeping active and (hopefully) fit in lockdown

Staying at home doesn’t have to mean staying still. While there are some fantastic home workouts available (like PE with Joe) and a wealth of great exercise apps, we’ve also come up with some ideas of our own to keep active in lockdown.

If you’re tired of the treadmill or feel like something different to your regular yoga app, here are some tried and tested alternatives.

    Home workout

    Keith Walker, managing director

‘Low impact’ workouts have become the norm for me in lockdown. Not because I struggle with burpees, star jumps etc. but because I live in a top floor flat and the neighbours downstairs don’t appreciate ‘squat jump’ reps on their ceilings at 7am…

    Land's End

Cat Ellis, fitness and wellbeing editor

My regular running club has been replaced with a virtual one on Strava, and our pub socials are now weekly Zoom chats (bonus points for having a collection of medals in the background). I set up a virtual Land’s end to John O’Groats run on My Virtual Mission, thinking it would easily last until the end of lockdown, but it turns out I vastly underestimated how long a pandemic might last.

We’ve all been taking part in virtual races too, where you log your time with a fitness tracker and receive a medal in the post. It’s been great, except for the Easter run where the organizer sent everyone chocolate eggs, which arrived smashed to pieces and tasting of envelope glue.

    Strava

    Tom Bedford, staff writer, phones

My gym closing turned out to be a blessing in disguise – while a treadmill encouraged me to run the same distance in better and better times, I’ve found running outdoors pushes me to see how far I can go, no matter the timing. What began as a quick run to see how long the queues were in my local shops, when lockdown started, has quickly grown to a 10km dash every other day just to get out, and of course I’m using Strava to boast about it all too.

    Foam roller

    Mark Wilson, cameras editor

After picking up a lockdown running injury, I’ve had to resort to the distinctly less preferable home bodyweight exercises and dreaded foam roller. But this had led to one positive – me and my girlfriend now have a column each in a Google Sheets exercise tracker. This is working well, because neither of us want to suffer the humiliation of breaking our streak. I’ve also been enjoying Sky’s Fit in 5 workouts, mainly because the guests always seem to be as knackered as I am.

    Samuel Roberts, senior entertainment editor

I bought myself an Ultrasport F-Bike back in January, because I know I’ll never, ever be motivated to join a gym (also, I’m too cheap for a monthly membership). I’ve loved using it, and I cycle 11km on it per day, on an average of six days a week. I only burn 250 calories per go, but the mental health benefits are obvious.

Since I have to write about Netflix and Disney Plus for this website on a near-constant basis, too, putting the bike in front of the TV is a great way to catch up on shows I haven’t seen yet.

    Yoga

    Mackenzie Frazier, deals editor

Since I can no longer go to a pilates class, I downloaded the Melissa Wood Health app. She has hundreds of guided workout videos and meditations  – the best part is you don’t need any equipment, you use your own body weight. The workouts are short – 20 to 30 minutes, and I look forward to doing a class every day. I plan on sticking with the app even when gyms open back up.

    Running

Henry St Leger, staff writer, home tech

Oddly, lockdown has me exercising a lot more than usual! I used to stagger half-heartedly to the gym once a week, with the odd jog to get some fresh air, but with my local gym closed – and not much else to do – I’ve taken to using my excursion to get a good 30-minute run in a few days a week.

I’ve found evenings better for not running into other people on the sidewalk (or in local parks), and will take the opportunity to run in windy or wet weather for the same reason – but I wouldn’t blame anyone for sticking to short runs at sunny times too.

  • Assassin’s Creed Valhalla Creative Director Promises ‘In-Depth Gameplay’ After Lacklustre Reveal

    It’s coming, eventually.

In the short time since Microsoft’s Inside Xbox third-party digital event, both the team in green and Ubisoft have been heavily criticized for their use of the word “gameplay”. The Xbox Series X manufacturer promised that it would debut footage of Assassin’s Creed Valhalla, and while it technically did, what we got didn’t live up to even our tempered expectations. The 71-second trailer featured vague shots of the game and cutscenes that most likely don’t represent the final product.

It was a major disappointment, but at least the cross-gen title’s creative director has quickly sought to temper the flames. Ashraf Ismail took to Twitter to promise that “in-depth gameplay” and lots more information is coming.

  • LEGO Star Wars: The Skywalker Saga Seemingly Launches This October

    YouTube channel reveals.

LEGO Star Wars: The Skywalker Saga received a welcome info dump this past Monday to celebrate Star Wars Day with new key art and screenshots. That was all well and good, but fans were still left wondering when they’d be able to play the game for themselves. Well, it appears they no longer need to ponder that question. LEGO Star Wars: The Skywalker Saga launches for PlayStation 4 on 20th October 2020 according to a video uploaded to the official Star Wars YouTube channel earlier today.

In it, presenter Kristin Baver says: “Releasing on October 20th, play out your favourite moments brick by brick.” Now, developer Traveller’s Tales hasn’t backed this up by also revealing the release date in a public manner. However, since this comes from an official Star Wars source, we think we’re pretty safe in saying that this is the actual launch date. We’ve reached out to the studio for comment.

  • Mass Effect Trilogy HD Remaster Is Finally Happening, Apparently

    Shepard!

Last night we covered EA’s financial report for 2020, pointing out that it has a number of unannounced games currently in development — all of them set to release by April 2021. Alongside four “EA Partner” titles, there was also mention of an “EA HD” title. In other words, a remake or remaster.

Given that fans have been waiting almost an entire console generation for a remastered Mass Effect Trilogy, we wrote about how this report offers some hope. But as it happens, we might not even need hope — a re-release of the Mass Effect Trilogy is apparently heading our way.

  • Dying Light 2 Dev Dismisses Rumours of Buyout, Workplace Problems

    Inaccurate translations.

We initially chose not to report on it due to some dodgy translations, but earlier today you may have picked up on some speculation that developer Techland has been having development issues with Dying Light 2. The game was delayed indefinitely earlier this year, and Polish website PolskiGameDev appeared to have the scoop on why. It talked of communication issues with narrative designer Chris Avellone, a lack of clear direction, and the uncertainty over whether or not the team had been bought by Microsoft. However, none of this actually appears to be the case. Techland PR has been quick to stamp out the unsubstantiated chatter by taking to Twitter.

Ola Sondej, senior PR manager at Techland, tweeted that the studio remains an independent developer and has not been bought by another company. Dying Light 2 also continues to be scheduled for launch on PlayStation 4.

  • Final Fantasy VII Remake Has Over 2000 Anime-Style Grunts and Sighs in Its Main Story

    Uh? Huh.

Characters love to grunt and sigh in Final Fantasy VII Remake. They do it all the bloody time. If someone moves more than a centimetre, they need to make a noise, and once you hear it, you can never unhear it.

If you’re familiar with anime or other Japanese media, then you’ll already be aware of these sounds. In animation, they’re often employed so that characters can react to things even if no dialogue is taking place — and it’s a trope that’s carried over into video games.

  • Unannounced EA Titles Give Mass Effect Fans Renewed Hope for Trilogy Remaster

    Just do it.

It’s the middle of 2020 and EA still hasn’t given us a remastered Mass Effect Trilogy. How have we gone almost a whole console generation without seeing Shepard and the gang on PlayStation 4? It boggles the mind.

But that’ll do for our scheduled rant about remastering Mass Effect. We’re here to talk about a number of currently unannounced titles that EA has lined up for this fiscal year (releasing by April 2021, in other words). This story is essentially a follow-up to EA’s previously reported earnings call back in January, in which it stated that four “major” unannounced projects were set to launch through March 2021.
