  • Death Stranding’s Weirdest Words, Explained

Updated: Our list now includes even more weird Kojima-isms. Check out the bottom of the page for some new additions — keep in mind that we don’t outright spoil plot points, and label some spoilers, but every definition on this is a kind of mini-spoiler if you are going in blind, so watch out!

Despite being on all of our collective radars for more than three years now, with a bunch of trailers and demos flooding our newsfeeds over the past few months, there’s still a lot to take in when it comes to getting a handle on just what the hell is going on in director Hideo Kojima’s latest project.

In order to do our best to help folks make sense of Norman Reedus’s wacky ghost adventure, we put together a handy dictionary for the main wild buzzwords you may need to refer to when playing through one of this year’s most anticipated releases.

  • Does Death Stranding Actually Introduce a New Genre?

One of the biggest questions leading into Death Stranding’s launch was — does Hideo Kojima’s first post-Konami game actually introduce a new genre, as Kojima claimed it would before launch? Now that we’ve had plenty of hands-on time with Death Stranding, we’ve been able to determine firsthand whether the ‘Strand Genre’ really is its own thing. And the answer is: not quite, but the way it evolves certain gameplay ideas are absolutely worth being explored in other games, which is something Kojima called for as well.

  • Dragon Ball FighterZ Perfectly Captures DBS Broly’s Fury in First Gameplay Trailer

    Pure muscle.

Broly (from Dragon Ball Super) is the next DLC character coming to Dragon Ball FighterZ, and he just can’t contain his own power. As evidenced by his gameplay trailer, which we’ve embedded above, the title clearly does an outstanding job of capturing the beast at his explosive best.

Sadly, there’s still no date attached to Broly, even though he was first announced months and months ago. Surely he can’t be far away.

  • Wattam Might Have the Best Trophy Descriptions of All Time

    “You’ve pooped 101 times”.

We’re always keeping our eye out for new Trophy lists on Exophase, and the peculiar-looking Wattam just appeared on the site ahead of its planned December launch. It’s not your ordinary list of trinkets, however, because the Funomena title could have the best Trophy descriptions we’ve ever seen.

Thankfully, the 37 tasks on offer do amount to a Platinum Trophy at the end of it all, but it’s not even what the trinkets will have you doing that’s the best thing going on here. There appear to be numerous rewards for story progress, holding hands, and climbing high, but it’s the descriptions accompanying those Trophies that turns this into something pretty special.

  • Rocket League Now Has Beat Saber Cosmetics, And They’re Free

Rocket League has received some new free cosmetic items, and they pay homage to another huge indie darling.

The latest Rocket League / Beat Saber crossover has brought a new topper and boost to Psyonix’s car soccer game, based on the blocks you’re slashing away at in Beat Saber. You can wear one of the hood of your car, or fit it out with a boost that looks like the lanes from Beat Saber, with blocks travelling down. Check out the gif in the Tweet below for a better look.

Need Boost? These two new customization items from Beat Saber – a Topper and Boost – are so cool!

    — Beat Saber (@BeatSaber) November 8, 2019

Just last week the music of Rocket League came to Beat Saber, giving players of the VR rhythm game access to six pieces of music from the game. This free cosmetic DLC could be a way of promoting that pack, which will set you back a few dollars.

Rocket League is big on collaborations–it featured a Stranger Things event over Halloween. There are some big changes coming to the game soon, too, as it will soon ditch loot crates in favour of ‘Blueprints‘ that show you exactly what you’re getting. Beat Saber, meanwhile, is available on Oculus and PS VR. In our 8/10 review, we praised it as “an exhilarating rush and an exhausting game to play in the best way.”

  • PS4, Xbox One, And Switch Are Getting Indie Narrative Adventure Where The Water Tastes Like Wine Very Soon

Where The Water Tastes Like Wine, a narrative-focused game in which you work your way around the 1930s American Dust Bowl, hearing and trading stories, is come to consoles later this month. The game, which released on PC in 2018, is coming to Switch, PS4, and Xbox One on November 29.

The game’s impending release was announced by publisher Serenity Forge on Twitter. It’s now available to pre-order on Switch.

The game also received a new launch trailer ahead of its console release.

The game, which contains a guest appearance from Sting, struggled at launch, with creator Johnnemann Nordhagen publicly discussing the difficulties developer Dim Bulb Games faced following the game’s release. “At the end of the day it’s astounding that a game that got this much attention from the press, that won awards, that had an all-star cast of writers and performers, that had a bizarre celebrity guest appearance(!) failed this hard,” Nordhagen wrote. Perhaps the game’s console release can recoup some of the costs of development.

We gave the game a 6/10 in our original review, stating that “if the basic premise of gathering folk stories across a version of 1930s America strongly appeals to you, then Where the Water Tastes Like Wine is worth a look, but it’s probably not worth finishing”. Since launch, the game has been updated with Chinese-American tales. It’s currently discounted by 70% on Steam.

  • First Trailer for Netflix’s ‘Bikram: Yogi, Guru, Predator’ Documentary

First Trailer for Netflix’s ‘Bikram: Yogi, Guru, Predator’ Documentary

    Bikram: Yogi, Guru, Predator Trailer

“Bikram was so good at getting inside our brains.” Netflix has unveiled an official trailer for a documentary titled Bikram: Yogi, Guru, Predator, the latest feature made by Oscar-winning filmmaker Eva Orner (The Network, Chasing Asylum, Out of Iraq). The film tells the controversial story of the famous founder of “hot yoga” named Bikram Choudhury, who immigrated to Los Angeles in the early 70s and made tons of money with his fitness empire. The doc traces his rise to glory in the 1970s to his disgrace in accusations of rape and sexual harassment in more recent years. Bikram: Yogi, Guru, Predator, a Netflix original, shines a light on the stories of the women who took him down and explores the contradiction of how this healing discipline could simultaneously help and hurt so many. This doc definitely fits into the Netflix canon with all their other searing, jaw-dropping, fascinating films about crazy minds of manipulative men. Yoga madness. ›››

  • Sony Files Patent for Curious New Cartridge

    Tomorrow is in your hands?

Sony has filed a patent for a curious new cartridge in Brazil, raising speculation about the nature of the product it’s designed for. The last cartridge-based console that the company released was the ill-fated PS Vita, and with the PlayStation 5 already confirmed to include a 4K Blu-ray drive, it’s unlikely to be related to that. Could this be a new handheld?

The answer is almost certainly no, because we’ve been here before, haven’t we? Around this time last year, the platform holder patented a strangely shaped cartridge, prompting all sorts of speculation. Those rumours were quickly quelled, however, when it emerged that the device was actually for the Sony Toio, a toy only available in Japan.

  • Mini Review: Valfaris – Heavy Metal Headliner Is Hellishly Worthy

Go to Hell, for Heaven’s Sake.

Valfaris isn’t interested in pleasantries and introductions. The Slain: Back From Hell spiritual successor is a headbanging romp across an alien planet that lets the action do the talking. Teeming with the Devil’s deadliest associates, it’s 2D shooting mayhem that manages to match impressive enemy designs with hellish weaponry ready to slaughter.

There’s clearly no rest for the wicked down under, with an unrelenting horde of creatures to blame. This is non-stop conflict that only just makes enough room for a handful of enjoyable platforming sections here and there. That’s no bad thing, however, because Valfaris is intensely exhilarating. Equipped with a melee weapon and two guns of your choosing, downing enemies is relatively simple but it becomes a vastly different experience as more and more combatants flood the screen. Crowd control is a consideration while the game borders on becoming a bullet hell shooter.
