Conan Exiles Gets New Trailer, Release Date for PC and Xbox One Early Access

Funcom today launched a new gameplay trailer for Conan Exiles and announced when the game will be available to play in early access on PC and Xbox One.

Today’s trailer, which is the first new one in nearly six months, shows off a series of sequences, including those involving exploration, combat, and building.

As for the release date, Conan Exiles will be available in early access on PC starting on January 31, 2017. An unfinished version of the game for Xbox One will follow in Spring 2017, playable through the console’s Game Preview program. Sony’s PS4 does not allow early access-style games.

“The open-world survival genre is ripe for Conan’s conquest,” game director Joel Bylos said in a statement. “If there ever was a world that can truly test your strength and skill, it is the brutal and savage world of Conan the Barbarian. Conan Exiles is not just an empty sandbox, it is a world rich in history where you must discover the secrets of ancient civilizations as you struggle to build your own.”

The game’s early access period was originally scheduled to begin in September 2016. However, the developer confirmed in June that it would be delayed until 2017 to “make a better game.” Additionally, Funcom recently “secured additional funding,” which means the developer is in a “much more flexible” financial situation, according to Bylos.

Conan Exiles is described as an open-world game that’s inspired by the stories of Robert E. Howard. It is multiplayer-centric, though you can play alone, too.

  • How Pokemon Sun/Moon Launch Sales Compare to X/Y in Japan

How Pokemon Sun/Moon Launch Sales Compare to X/Y in Japan

Pokemon Sun and Moon are apparently off to a huge start in Japan. According to Famitsu (via Kotaku), Pokemon Sun and Moon sold 1,905,107 copies at retail over its first three days.

For comparison, Pokemon X and Y reportedly sold 1,866,570 copies in Japan in its first two days on the market. Again, this number does not include digital copies. According to Famitsu, Pokemon X and Y managed to sell 2.096 million copies in its first three days, ahead of Sun and Moon.

Even though Sun and Moon sales may be lagging behind X and Y slightly, 1.905 million copies sold stands as the second best launch ever for a 3DS game in Japan.

Nintendo has yet to announce official sales numbers for Pokemon Sun and Moon for Japan or any other worldwide market. We’ll report back when official numbers are released.

Strong sales for Sun and Moon would be no surprise, given that Nintendo announced that it shipped 10 million copies of the game to retail for launch, which is 1.5 times the figure for X and Y. Additionally, the game set a preorder record for Nintendo, while the game’s free demo broke records as well.

Sun and Moon are the first mainline Pokemon games to come out since Pokemon Go‘s record-setting release in July. There is no doubt that the game’s status as a global phenomenon has raised awareness for the Pokemon brand overall.

For more on Sun and Moon, check out GameSpot’s review and what other critics are saying. If you’re deciding which version to pick up, check out GameSpot’s breakdown of the two editions here.

In other news, a recent report claimed that a version of Pokemon Sun and Moon is coming to the Nintendo Switch console.

2016 is the 20th anniversary of the Pokemon series, as the first games debuted in 1996. Nintendo has celebrated the milestone with a Super Bowl commercial, a party hosted by Drew Barrymore, and with free mythical Pokemon.

  • Mass Effect: Andromeda's Ship Won't Have Loading Screens

New details for Mass Effect: Andromeda have been revealed by way of Game Informer. The information pertains to The Tempest, which is the ship players will be exploring the Andromeda galaxy in.

The Tempest will serve a similar function to the Normandy, the ship players called home throughout the first three games. However, there have been some changes to give it a unique new feel. Chief among them is the way players choose their destination, which is done by standing on the bridge and looking out into the stars in front of you, instead of transitioning to a map.

In another part of the ship is a holographic interface which main character Ryder uses for upgrading. Players can also redistribute ability points and shift around upgrades to suit the mission at hand. There’s also a garage where you can admire the Nomad, a surface exploration vehicle similar to the Mako.

The decor of Ryder’s quarters can be customised to some degree and there will be various momentos from missions you go on.

Fans of the series will be glad to hear that there are no loading screens within the Tempest, unlike in the Normandy, which means you won’t be standing around in lifts or waiting to be scanned while running around the ship. Additionally, developer BioWare says moving from the Tempest to exploring a planet will also be seamless.

“With memory limitations, with loading limitations, there was a real problem [in previous games]; if you wanted to go from one place to another, you had to unload everything, you had to reload everything–it was a long time,” explained technical director Harold Chaput.

“It really broke the flow of the game. Now, it’s so much smoother to be on the ship, land on a planet, jump around, go inside a building. It’s all very seamless, so breaking down the barriers frees up the player to explore and do activities. It makes it easier to make a rich and full environment.”

BioWare is expected to show more of Mass Effect: Andromeda gameplay footage during The Game Awards on December 1. Andromeda is scheduled to launch this spring for PlayStation 4, Xbox One, and PC. While not confirmed, multiple retail listings have suggested a March 21 release date.

  • Blizzard Working On Unannounced First Person Project

Blizzard is working on an “unannounced project that utilizes a robust first-person engine,” according to two job listings on the company’s US careers site.

The listings are for two lead software engineers, both specifically preferring workers with experience working on first-person games.

To date, Overwatch is the only first person game Blizzard has ever developed. It’s not clear whether the project these job listings refer to is an expansion or sequel to Overwatch, or a new game altogether. Other series from the developer include World of Warcraft, StarCraft, Heroes of the Storm, and Hearthstone.

This isn’t the first time Blizzard have advertised jobs for unannounced projects. Earlier this year, the company was after someone to lead the next Diablo project. In 2015, meanwhile, it was hiring an art director for an “unannounced project” in the Diablo universe.

Overwatch’s latest big update is the introduction of Sombra, a new character capable of hacking other players’ abilities. The base game, meanwhile, was very popular here at GameSpot–critic Mike Mahardy called it a “brilliant shooter,” awarding it a 9. For more, check out our full Overwatch review.

Apple MacBook Pro Touch Bar Hacked To Run Doom

Almost every gaming platform powerful enough to cope with the sprite-based id Tech engine plays host to a port of Doom. Not only that, pretty much any piece of hardware with a screen and microchip can be made to run a version of id Software’s genre-defining shooter, such is the adaptability of the code. Just don’t mention the Sega Saturn slideshow featuring horrifying net curtain pinky demons. With this in mind, it appears that somebody looked at the new Apple MacBook Pro’s touch bar and thought “I reckon that will run Doom…” and so it was decreed. And then Doom was made to run on the MacBook Pro touch bar. And it was glorious. Stretched beyond recognition and virtually unplayable…but glorious nonetheless.
