Watch: Official US Trailer for 'Golden Kingdom' Film Made in Myanmar

    Golden Kingdom Trailer

“You must take care of the others.” Kino Lorber has revealed an official US trailer for the film titled Golden Kingdom, a narrative feature shot entirely in the Asian country of Myanmar (also known as Burma) by an American filmmaker named Brian Perkins. The film features non-actors and “bridges spirit, cinema, and traditional Burmese storytelling to open a view onto an unseen world.” The story is about four young monks who are left alone in their remote monastery in northern Myanmar. Perkins has traveled extensively around Asia and India, establishing relationships in the monasteries and villages of Burma. This looks like a one-of-a-kind film, truly capturing the beauty of the country and the peacefulness of Buddhism. Worth watching. ›››

  • New Featurette for 'Assassin's Creed' Examines the Creed Mythology

New Featurette for 'Assassin's Creed' Examines the Creed Mythology

    Creed Mythology

“The Assassins believe that above all else, mankind should have free will.” 20th Century Fox has put out another new featurette for the Assassin’s Creed movie, examining the “Creed Mythology” in an attempt to explain some of the context behind the story and what we’re seeing. We know that Michael Fassbender plays Callum Lynch, an imprisoned man who is forced into an experimental sci-fi program that allows him to go back in time as his ancestor, Aguilar, in 15th Century Spain. The story is actually about the Assassins vs the Templars, who have “been at war for centuries.” Marion Cotillard seems to be on the other side, as one of the Templars, who want to control humanity. This actually looks damn good, I’m quite curious to see. ›››

New Trailer for VHS Throwback Indie Horror Film 'Beyond the Gates'

    Beyond the Gates Trailer

“I suggest you play the game.” IFC Midnight has debuted a trailer for the indie horror titled Beyond the Gates, a throwback to VHS and specifically VCR games, where you play a board game that comes with a VHS tape. Directed by Jackson Stewart, the film is about two brothers who come across an old VHS board game while cleaning out their missing dad’s video rental store. They decided to play it one last time and get sucked into a game they can’t escape. Starring Graham Skipper, Chase Williamson, Brea Grant, and real life horror actress Barbara Crampton as the host of the VHS game. I caught this film at a festival a few months ago and enjoyed it, saying it’s “goofy, rather harmless, and super low-budget” but fun. Pop it in. ›››

Mafia III’s other free DLC on the way includes more vehicle customization options like new wheels, personalized license plates, and paint jobs. There will be performance-boosters, too.

Developer Hangar 13 is also supporting Mafia III with three paid expansions that will “reveal more about Lincoln Clay’s time in New Bordeaux.” 2K teased, “As these stories will reveal, the Italian Mafia isn’t the only threat Lincoln faces…” The stories for these focus on the Vietnam war, ritualistic killings, and stunt driving.

2K’s parent company, Take-Two, announced last week that Mafia III shipped 4.5 million copies in its first week, setting a new launch record for 2K. Take-Two CEO Strauss Zelnick also responded to Mafia III’s reviews, which were lower than what the company had hoped for.

How's Square Enix Doing? Here Are the Key Takeaways From Earnings Repot

Japanese video game giant Square Enix today reported earnings for the six-month period ended September 30, providing a new look into how the company is doing from a business perspective.

Total revenue was ¥106 billion, up 23 percent from the same period last year, when Square Enix pulled in ¥86.36 billion. Net income was ¥5.5 billion, a decrease from the ¥7.3 billion in income that Square Enix recorded during the same six-month period last year.

Console games that benefited Square Enix’s bottom line during the quarter included Deus Ex: Mankind Divided and the PlayStation 4 version of Rise of the Tomb Raider. Square Enix didn’t say how well the games sold. The company also said it had “strong download sales” of catalog titles, but didn’t name any titles outright.

Some of Square Enix’s smartphone and PC games, including Mobius Final Fantasy, Hoshi No Dragon Quest, Final Fantasy Brave Excius, and Grimms Notes were also called out as revenue-drivers.

Square Enix’s video game division, called Digital Entertainment, recorded revenue of ¥78.31 billion, up 30.1 percent from the same period last year. Operating income, however, dropped 6.1 percent to ¥12.13 billion.

Looking ahead, one of Square Enix’s biggest upcoming games is Final Fantasy XV, which finally comes out on November 29 for PS4 and Xbox One. Director Hajime Tabata has said he hopes the game will sell 10 million copies, though that is not necessarily how many copies its needs to sell to turn a profit.

  • The Big Bang Theory is Getting a Prequel Spinoff

The Big Bang Theory is Getting a Prequel Spinoff

It’s the most popular series on TV, and the producers of The Big Bang Theory are now looking to expand it to a spinoff show, which is reportedly already in production.

    No Caption Provided

According to The Hollywood Reporter, the spinoff will focus on the earlier life of Sheldon Cooper, played by Jim Parsons on The Big Bang Theory, and is being developed by co-creators Chuck Lorre and Bill Prady. THR’s sources describe the project as “Malcolm in the Middle but with a young and potentially teenage version of Sheldon.” Like The Big Bang Theory, the series will be produced by Warner TV and broadcast on CBS, although neither company has commented on the project to date.

The Big Bang Theory is currently on its tenth season, and although season 11 is expected, it is yet to be commissioned. THR reports that the main cast members, including Parsons, Johnny Galeck, Kaley Cuoco, Simon Helberg, Kunal Nayyar, Mayim Bialik, and Melissa Rauch, are all currently negotiating new deals with Warner for season 11 and beyond.

In 2014, Parsons, Galecki, and Cuoco signed deals that were reported to be around $1 million per episode, as well as signing bonuses, production deals, and advances. The show regularly attracts over 20 million viewers a week, more than double to what it achieved during its first season.

Disclosure: CBS is GameSpot’s parent company.

  • Pokemon Go Boss on Why You Should Vote Today

Today is a big day in the world of politics, as the United States will vote to elect a new president. Fictional HBO characters have already told viewers to go vote and now Pokemon Go boss John Hanke has done the same.

In a blog post on developer Niantic’s website, Hanke discussed why being involved in the political process is important for everyone. “Here at Niantic, we are passionate about exploration and discovery of our local communities. If we get out and explore the places where we live, and maybe meet some of our friends and neighbors along the way, we think that can only be a good thing for the world,” he said.

“A big part of making our communities work here in the US is the democratic process that allows us to select our leaders and influence the laws,” Hanke added. “We encourage you to exercise your right to vote and make your voice heard. Every journey starts with a single step, and a path to a better world and a lifetime of making a difference can start with a single vote.”

If you didn’t vote already either through an absentee ballot or early voting, you can Google “Find my voting place” to find out where your local polling location is.

Pokemon Go was recently updated with a daily catch bonus feature–read more about it here. Players have data-mined the update and found references to more than 100 new creatures. Additionally, veteran Pokemon series producer Junichi Masuda said in an interview that the massive, global popularity of Pokemon Go did not impact the development of Pokemon Sun/Moon.

Some kind of connection between Pokemon Go and Sun and Moon has been discussed, but it remains to be seen what this will be.

  • YouTube Now Supports HDR Videos

YouTube has revealed it now supports HDR videos, meaning you’ll more accurately be able to see what the Xbox One S and PS4 Pro are capable of.

In a blog post, the company detailed its new functionalities and how to upload and watch high dynamic range content. Although anyone can play videos uploaded in HDR, you’ll need a compatible device (such as an HDR TV equipped with Chromecast Ultra) to take full advantage of the expanded colour range.

YouTube has an HDR launch playlist, though don’t expect many videos to be available in HDR straight away: the service unveiled its support for 4K back in 2010, and ultra high definition videos are still not the standard.

Hopefully those standards will increase now the Xbox One S and PS4 Pro are available. Take a look at our Xbox One S review or our PS4 Pro review to see if HDR gaming is worth the upgrade, while we also have a complete list of all HDR compatible PS4 Pro games. Neo Geo MVS Flash Cartridge ‘NeoSD’ Out Now & Shipping Next Week

NeoSD-MVS-Flash-CartridgeFor many SNK’s Neo Geo platform has been a distant dream due to the ever rising price tags its accompanying software demands. Unlike the many other consoles out there the system has lacked a flash cartridge or equivalent method of loading game ROMs on the original hardware, which if anything has kept both the demand and cost of game cartridges high. As of next week though, this may become a thing of the past following the unexpected arrival of the NeoSD.
