Watch: Extended Featurette Shows Us How They Made 'La La Land'

    La La Land Featurette

“They seemed excited about the amount of work it would take to do this movie…” Lionsgate has released a 4-minute extended featurette for Damien Chazelle’s stellar La La Land, going behind the making of this magnificent modern musical. It’s one of the most refreshing and exciting movies this entire year, and it’s incredibly impressive thanks to the vision of writer/director Damien Chazelle. Chazelle is featured in this video a lot, talking about various aspects of the movie, from choosing the actors to the choreography to the set design. Ryan Gosling and Emma Stone play the star-crossed Los Angeles lovers. I’m glad Lionsgate is sharing so much of this movie before release, they seem to be totally supportive of it and that’s great. Enjoy. ›››

Must Watch: First Trailer for Martin Scorsese's 'Silence' Set in Japan

    Silence Trailer

“The moment you set foot in that country, you step into high danger.” Paramount has finally unveiled the first official trailer for Martin Scorsese’s new film, titled Silence, adapted from Shûsaku Endô’s novel of the same name. The story follows two Jesuit priests, played by Adam Driver and Andrew Garfield, who travel to Japan in the 17th century only to discover that the Japanese have outlawed Christianity. Liam Neeson and Ciarán Hinds also play two other priests, with a Japanese cast including Tadanobu Asano, Shin’ya Tsukamoto, Yôsuke Kubozuka, Issei Ogata and Yoshi Oida. Word is this is one of Scorsese’s longest films, but it looks like it’s going to be entrancing and harrowing to watch. As expected, this trailer is full of some fantastic footage from Scorsese, and the intense score only adds to it. Can’t wait to see this film. ›››

  • Looking Back: Aronofsky's 'The Fountain' is an Underrated Masterpiece

Looking Back: Aronofsky's 'The Fountain' is an Underrated Masterpiece

    The Fountain

When you think of auteur filmmaker Darren Aronofsky, you probably think of Requiem for a Dream or Black Swan. However, when I think of Darren Aronofsky, I can’t help but gravitate toward what I think is his most underrated film: The Fountain, released in 2006. The science fiction love story, starring Hugh Jackman and Rachel Weisz playing essentially the same characters over three timelines, was released ten years ago today with little fanfare. The film was blasted by critics and made very little at the box office. However, I fell in love with the film from the moment I gazed my eyes on the first frame ten years ago. Let’s explore why I think the film is an underrated masterpiece and one of Aronofsky’s best in his filmography. ›››

  • First Official Trailer for Action Film 'Kill Ratio' Starring Tom Hopper

First Official Trailer for Action Film 'Kill Ratio' Starring Tom Hopper

    Kill Ratio Trailer

“You are witnessing history today.” XLrator Media has debuted a trailer for an indie action movie titled Kill Ratio, which looks like another formulaic action flick. The plot involves an American covert operative who becomes the one man who can save an entire country when a “ruthless military leader” attempts a coup. Tom Hopper (from “Black Sails”, “Merlin” and Knights of Badassdom) stars, with Lacy Moore, Amy Huberman, Nick Dunning, Conor Hegarty, Brian McGuinness and Michelle Lehane. This looks particularly cheesy, especially considering it’s another action movie that takes place inside of one building. The sword fight at the end nearly made me roll my eyes. I’m not expecting much from this, but who knows. ›››

  • Blizzard Reveals Real Reason It Canceled Titan in Wacky New Movie Promo

Fox has put out a new promo for its upcoming James Franco/Bryan Cranston movie Why Him?–and it’s a weird one. In the film, Franco plays a Silicon Valley billionaire game designer named Laird, who created a game called Ape Assassins. The new video shows a series of real-world gaming executives, including Blizzard’s Mike Morhaime, Ubisoft’s Aymar Azaizia, and 343’s Kiki Wolfkill, talking about Ape Assassins and why it’s such an influential and important game.

There are a number of funny lines, including Morhaime talking about how the real reason Blizzard canceled Titan was because its employees were too busy playing Ape Assassins (that’s not really the reason). Azaizia jokes that Ape Assassins was a prequel to Assassin’s Creed. Check it out:

Ape Assassins is a real game that you can play right now on iOS or Android. You play as the “world’s most irate primate,” in the run-and-gun shooter. It features the song “Dope Girlz” by Steve Aoki.

The comedy tells the story of Ned (Cranston), who visits his daughter at Stanford and finds out she’s dating Laird, a man he thinks is no match for his daughter. A lot of wackiness ensues–check out the latest trailer below.

Why Him? was directed by John Hamburg (I Love You, Man, Along Came Polly), with a story written by Jonah Hill, Hamburg, and Ian Helfer. Shawn Levy (Uncharted, Night at the Museum) and Ben Stiller are producers.

Why Him? opens in theaters on December 23.

  • Homefront: The Revolution Was Released Too Early, Didn't Sell Up to Expectations, Exec Says

Homefront: The Revolution Was Released Too Early, Didn't Sell Up to Expectations, Exec Says

Homefront publisher Deep Silver has come forward to say Homefront: The Revolution was released too early, which was part of the reason why the game was “less of a success” than it wanted.

“We have learnt some big lessons from Homefront,” Deep Silver global brand and marketing director Paul Nicholls told MCV in a new interview.

    No Caption Provided

Nicholls went on to say that quality is incredibly important in the gaming market today. He suggested that had The Revolution stayed in development for longer, it might have been better-received. GameSpot’s review scored it a 5/10, while reviews overall were mixed, according to GameSpot sister site Metacritic.

“You can see in the market at the moment, quality is absolutely king and some big IPs have struggling figures at the moment,” Nicholls said. “We learnt a lot of lessons about what to do going forward. Not just the quality of the product, but when we launch as well.”

Nicholls added that the team at developer Dambuster “did a fantastic job” with The Revolution, particularly after launch with its patches and updates. “The sentiment with consumers has really turned around,” he said. “We’re getting a lot of positive feedback compared to when we launched, so timing was probably the biggest lesson we have learnt there.”

The Revolution’s four-year development was less than smooth. Crytek bought rights to the franchise in early 2013, after the collapse of THQ. A year later, following reports of financial issues at Crytek, it sold the IP to Deep Silver, which set up a new studio–Dambuster–to continue development.

Dambuster addressed the rocky development path by including a note at the end of the game that acknowledges the situation.

No new games in the Homefront series have been announced.

Pokemon Go "Nearby" Feature Expands to New Areas, Changed Due to Feedback

Originally tested only in San Francisco, California, Pokemon Go‘s “Nearby” feature has now expanded to more markets and has been changed somewhat due to feedback.

As outlined in a blog post from developer Niantic, the Nearby feature is now available in the United States in all states west of the Mississippi River, with the exception of Hawaii and Alaska. In Canada, Nearby is now available in British Columbia, Alberta, Saskatchewan, Manitoba, and the western half of Ontario. And in Australia, it’s available in all states and territories.

Additionally, some changes have been made to how the Nearby system works based on feedback from fans. “We have changed the feature to only show the Nearby feature if a PokeStop is close to your location. In addition, we have also made changes to the way Sightings now works,” Niantic explained.

The developer went on to say that the feedback players have sent in across social media channels and elsewhere has been important to the studio. You can expect Niantic to continue to examine feedback and make more changes in the future if necessary, the studio said.

“Our first six months has been nothing short of exciting and your continued support has been inspiring,” Niantic said. “We have a lot of content, features, and functionality that we will be implementing over the coming months and years. Our goal is to to always improve on existing features where we can while also releasing exciting new content and functionality.”

In other Pokemon Go news, you can get double XP and Stardust right now as part of a “thank you” promotion from Niantic that runs until November 30. Additionally, Niantic updated the game this week to buff some creatures and nerf others.

  • 4K PS4 Pro Support Comes to Assassin's Creed Syndicate

4K PS4 Pro Support Comes to Assassin's Creed Syndicate

2015’s Assassin’s Creed Syndicate received a surprise update this week, adding PS4 Pro support to the Victorian-era action game. According to the patch notes, update 1.5 adds 4K support for the PS4 Pro console, though a detailed rundown of what’s improved is not available.

Some games patched for PS4 Pro look better on 1080p TV sets as well, though this may not be the case for Syndicate. Wccftech reports that the game looks the same as it did before the patch.

Syndicate is not the only Assassin’s Creed game to receive a PS4 Pro patch, as The Ezio Collection was also updated to support the new console. That game’s patch added support for “4K dynamic rendering,” though Ubisoft did not share any further specifics about the visual improvements.

Check out GameSpot’s roundup to see a list of other games that have been or will be patched to include PS4 Pro support.

The $400 PS4 Pro launched in November. Sony has not announced any sales figures, but GameStop management recently stated that the more-powerful console is off to a “strong start.” For more on the console, check out GameSpot’s review.

  • Unreleased Atari Jaguar Prototype 'Thea Realm Fighters' Discovered

Unreleased Atari Jaguar Prototype 'Thea Realm Fighters' Discovered

    Screen Shot 2016-11-22 at 20.41.37

The Atari Jaguar very nearly played host to a port of of Midway’s Mortal Kombat 3, and rumours suggest that it was actually finished before being cancelled. Unfortunately, the hole left in the system’s library by the disappearance of John Tobias and Ed Boon’s highly acclaimed 2D brawler was only partly plugged by copycat titles like Ultra Vortek and Kasumi Ninja…and the less said about the latter, the better. While Ultra Vortek was actually a highly competent alternative to Mortal Kombat, Kasumi Ninja is best remembered as that fighting game with a pitiful frame rate and a Scottish character (called Angus, naturally) who had the uncanny ability to emit fireballs from beneath his kilt. I wish I was joking.

Another title that planned to take advantage of the popularity of Motal Kombat style fighters was Thea Realm Fighters, from prolific Atari Jaguar developer High Voltage Software. Featuring familiar digitised graphics and even employing the skills of various Mortal Kombat character actors, Thea Realm Fighters promised over 20 different playable combatants, a lengthy arcade mode and some of the finest background parallax effects ever seen in a home console game. Alas, Thea Realm Fighters was quietly withdrawn from release schedules in late 1995 when it looked like the Jaguar was finally being put out to pasture, and since then very little has ever been seen of this almost mythical fighter in anything but grainy YouTube videos. Thea Realm Fighters looked like another lost Jaguar game, but a recent discovery has changed that status somewhat.

    TheaRealmFighters

As detailed in this thread at Atari Age (and also discussed here at Assembler Games), the demo version of Thea Realm Fighters that was shown at the 1995 Consumer Electronics Show (CES) has been discovered and released online. The demo features only a handful of characters and stages, and is playable using either an emulator or an Atari Jaguar Skunkboard. According to reports at Atari Age, the Skunkboard version runs a lot better than an emulator but we caught up with the collector behind the rom dump, Nicholas Persijn. I asked Nicholas about his reasons for releasing the demo – a demo for which he paid a considerable sum – and he told me: “I’m always looking for ways to expand the Atari Jaguar fan scene. This has been a personal holy grail for years and when I finally got my chance, I couldn’t keep it for myself.”

You’ll find some (emulator) footage of the game in action below, and while it may not look overly impressive remember it is only a demo. The version of the game that was in a more complete state at the time of cancellation is believed to be a lot more impressive, but has never been released online. However, for Jaguar fans and hunters of games or digital artifacts previously thought lost to the mists of time, the discovery of a playable version of Thea Realm Fighters is very exciting. As with the recent discovery of N64 racer Rev Limit, Thea Realm Fighters represents a very real possibility that even more unreleased games will be found and released in the future.
