Assassin’s Creed is the best film adaptation of a video game we’ve ever seen. Granted, that’s not exactly a huge wall to scale. The world of video games adapted to the big screen has had more valleys than peaks, and problematic films like Silent Hill and Resident Evil are considered the best this brand of movie making has to offer. Cult status has been kind to movies like Super Mario Bros. and Mortal Kombat in recent years, but even those fall into the category of fun rather than good. Leave it to a filmmaker like Justin Kurzel (of Snowtown and Macbeth) to show how it’s done. With breathtaking visuals, commendable performances, and an unconventional story Assassin’s Creed handily Parkours its way up through the ranks to come out ›››

“Someone has to stop this madness.” Sony Pictures Classics has debuted the official US trailer for Oliver Hirschbiegel’s film 13 Minutes, about the true story of an German man who tried to kill Hitler by planting a bomb in Munich in 1939. German actor Christian Friedel plays Georg Elser, an intelligent young man who decided to build a bomb from random materials he could find and planted it at a venue Hitler was about to speak at. The event ended early, and Hitler left the building 13 minutes before the bomb went off, escaping narrowly. The film profiles Elser and his time before the war, exploring his motives and desires for this plot. I saw this film way back at the Berlin Film Festival in early 2016, and I thought it was fantastic. I’m sad it has taken two years to get released, but I hope some people give it a chance. It’s worth your time. ›››

With just a few days to go before Christmas, those looking for a NES Classic Edition and haven’t found one yet, time is running out if you want it for the holiday. If you live in New York City or somewhere close and have some free time today, you might have a chance to get your hands on the hard-to-find system.

Nintendo announced today that the console will be available at its New York City store, starting at 2 PM ET. The company is expecting a lot of interest, so you should show up early. Nintendo will hand out wristbands to buy the NES Classic at 1 PM ET. There is a limit of one system per person.
Nintendo also had NES Classic systems in stock at its NYC store on December 21–they sold out quickly. We’d expect a similar situation today.
Nintendo’s marquee NYC store is located at 10 Rockefeller Plaza, on 48th Street between 5th and 6th Avenues. Here’s a map:
The $60 NES Classic Edition system launched in November and quickly sold out. Nintendo says retailers are getting new shipments all the time, but the system remains sold out almost everywhere. More than 196,000 units were sold in the US in November, according to the NPD Group.
It comes with 30 games, including some of the console’s best ones such as Super Mario Bros., Donkey Kong, The Legend of Zelda, and Pac-Man.
For more on what to expect on the Classic Edition–whenever you might be able to get your hands on one–read our full review.

Retailer GameStop is currently offering a pretty solid deal on two of Activision’s big FPS games.
Until December 27, when you buy Overwatch or Call of Duty: Infinite Warfare, you’ll get a copy of the other game for free. This is good for the PlayStation 4 and Xbox One versions of either game.

For Infinite Warfare, it appears this deal does not apply to the game’s Legacy Edition that comes with the Call of Duty 4 remaster. Go to GameStop’s website to get started shopping (via Major Nelson).
Infinite Warfare failed to meet GameStop’s sales expectations. The game did not stay at its $60 price for very long, as it’s now available for $40 at GameStop and other retailers. The Legacy Edition is also down $20, available for $60 at retailers across the country and online.

The newest Star Wars movie, Rogue One, does not feature one of the franchise’s most iconic elements: the opening crawl. Now, the person who designed this now-famous sequence for the 1977 original Star Wars has come forward to criticize Rogue One for leaving it out.
“Frankly, it is a huge mistake, because the image is so iconic and it’s so important to tens of millions, hundreds of millions of fans,” Dan Perri told The Hollywood Reporter.”I couldn’t imagine it starting without that. It’s foolish.”

Lucasfilm president Kathleen Kennedy explained before Rogue One‘s release that the studio was taking a different approach to the film, in part because it is a “story” movie and not a mainline entry. This is part of the reason why the crawl was left out. She also suggested that upcoming spinoffs, including 2018’s young Han Solo film, will also not include the crawl.
Perri told THR that he has not seen any Star Wars movie after the original in part because, “There are too many things to do and there are too many films out there to see.”
The full interview is very fascinating. Perri also talks about how he worked on the opening crawl for a long time before George Lucas eventually approved it at the last minute.
“I had no idea what he was doing, so it was just this stupid space film. I didn’t think anything of it,” he explained. “Everything I showed him, he didn’t like. So I was constantly going out there with new ideas, and he would tell me to look at certain films.
“He accepted it and they cut it in. By then, it was only maybe a month before the release,” Perri added. “The day I delivered it, it was such a relief to drive away from there knowing, ‘Wow, it’s done finally.’”
All of the mainline Star Wars films have opened with a crawl; the 2008 animated movie Star Wars: The Clone Wars did not.
Rogue One opened in theaters on December 16 and made a lot of money, though not as much as The Force Awakens. For more, check out GameSpot’s Rogue One review.

The newest Star Wars movie, Rogue One, has been in theaters for less than a week, but fans are clearly interested in what’s coming next for the mainline series. Lucasfilm president Kathleen Kennedy teased in a recent interview that fans can expect to “see things” about Episode VIII in Spring 2017.

“We’re giving [Rogue One] a little bit of breathing room,” she said at the film’s premiere this month, as reported by MoviePilot. “And then probably heading into spring, you’ll start to see things [about Episode VIII.”
It remains to be seen what these “things” could be, but official images or a trailer seem to be likely candidates.
The Spring 2017 timing is interesting, given that aligns with April 2017’s Star Wars Celebration event in Orlando, Florida. In an interview with Empire, Rey actress Daisy Ridley also referenced that event.
“I know there’s Celebration next year. Hopefully something will be shown there? That’s speculation, by the way…” she said.
Ridley also teased in the Empire interview what she’s seen of Episode VIII so far.
“I watched a sizzle reel. I went to go see Rian in the [editing room], and that was very…[makes excited noise] Rian sounds very happy. It’s very, very exciting,” she said. “Rian doesn’t love showing stuff.”
Following a delay, Episode VIII arrives in theaters on December 15, 2017. It also stars Adam Driver, Laura Dern, Domhnall Gleeson, Carrie Fisher, Anthony Daniels, Gwendoline Christie, and Andy Serkis.
At Star Wars Celebration this year, director Rian Johnson talked about how Episode VIII is the film where “we start zooming in on the characters and getting to the heart of them, challenging them, and pushing them deeper.”
This matches up with what Poe Dameron actor Oscar Isaac said in May. “In the new film, there’s a lot more to do. What happens now is the heroes get tested. All three of them get tested immensely,” he explained at the time, adding the film is “dark,” but “not really dark.”
Stars Ridley and John Boyega have also spoken about the film’s darker tone. “It’s a different take–darker, bigger,” Boyega told Variety. “Someone will say: ‘How do you get bigger than Force Awakens?’ But it’s crazy.”

[UPDATE] New box office estimates for Assassin’s Creed‘s Wednesday premiere have come in. Deadline reports that the movie is expected to top another December 21 release, the Chris Pratt/Jennifer Lawrence film Passengers, by as much as $4.5 million for its first day.
“Essentially, the core female audience that would go watch Passengers doesn’t come out until Christmas Day and beyond,” the site said.
It added that Assassin’s Creed is expected to be heavily frontloaded due to the “fanboy quotient,” a reference to video game fans, no doubt. As announced previously, Assassin’s Creed is projected to make as much as $35 million over its first six days, below what Passengers is pegged to bring in.
We will continue to update this story as more box office figures for Assassin’s Creed come in.
The original story is below.
The newest video game movie, Assassin’s Creed, opened on Tuesday night with previews that started at theaters across the US at 7 PM. Deadline reports that the film pulled in $1.35 million from 2,470 theaters from those early showings.
Assassin’s Creed officially debuts today, December 21. We’ll report back with day-one box office figures for the film as they become available, while you can keep checking back with GameSpot to find out how the film fares at the box office through the week and into the weekend.
The $1.35 million that Assassin’s Creed made for its Tuesday preview was slightly ahead of Sony’s Christ Pratt/Jennifer Lawrence space-travel movie, Passengers, which made $1.2 million at 2,400 locations. Previews for Passengers also started at 7 PM on Tuesday, with the wide release slate for today.
According to Deadline, Assassin’s Creed is expected to make between $30 million and $35 million over its first six days. Again, all of these numbers are for the US box office only.
