Final Fantasy V, a video game about four warriors who get together and beat up a giant tree, doesn’t try particularly hard to be innovative. In fact, it doesn’t try at all. Final Fantasy V is essentially an enhanced version of Final Fantasy III, proving rather definitively that Final Fantasy games don’t have to be original to be great.

“You sure about this, Captain?” 20th Century Fox has unveiled the first trailer for Alien: Covenant, the highly anticipated sci-fi follow-up to Prometheus, once again directed by Sir Ridley Scott. This is the latest movie in the Alien Anthology, bringing back the xenomorph alien as well as the R-rating, and it looks damn good. Dark and violent and scary. Michael Fassbender also returns as the android David, and Noomi Rapace is back somehow, along with Guy Pearce as Weyland. Katherine Waterston stars as Daniels. The thriller also co-stars Billy Crudup, Danny McBride, Carmen Ejogo, Callie Hernandez, Demián Bichir, Jussie Smollett, and Amy Seimetz. The final scene that this trailer ends on looks brutal. Wow. ›››

Director Guillermo del Toro has spoken out again to criticize Konami, the publisher he was working with for the canceled Hideo Kojima game, Silent Hills.
“F**k Konami,” was his message. Tweeting today on Christmas, del Toro joked about that being as true as other messages this time of year. Here’s the tweet:

Del Toro showed up in a recent trailer for Kojima’s next game, Death Stranding. The very weird trailer aired during The Game Awards this month, and it featured none other than del Toro himself alongside Hannibal star Mads Mikkelsen.
This isn’t the first time del Toro has publicly criticized Konami. Earlier this month, he had the same message: “F**k Konami.”
For its part, Konami has said it remains “committed to new Silent Hill titles,” though none have been announced. It added that the Silent Hills game was not actually very far in development, claiming it was only in the “embryonic” stage.
Silent Hills wasn’t the first video game project involving del Toro that fell apart. The director was working on a horror game called Insane with publisher THQ, but it never materialized, in part due to the company’s bankruptcy. After being burned twice, del Toro has said he doesn’t intend to try to make a game of his own again.
“I have proven to be the albatross of video games,” he said last year. “I joined THQ, and THQ goes broke. I join Kojima, and Kojima leaves Konami. I have decided, in order not to destroy anyone else’s life, I will never again get involved in video games. Otherwise, I’ll join someone and his house will explode, or something.”
Del Toro’s newest project, the animated Netflix show Trollhunters, is out now.

I don’t think it’s too much of a stretch to say that this was one of the most significant years for Japanese role-playing games in recent history, first and foremost because one of this fall’s biggest games was a brand new Final Fantasy.

Why are the muscle dudes punching the other muscle dudes through trees? Why are some of them naked? What’s with all the weird faces? I have no idea. I know nothing about Attack on Titan or anime, so this trailer is indecipherable to me, but hey, I know you guys love this series so HERE YOU GO. Season two of Attack on Titan comes west in April.
