  • Peter Berg Takes Over ‘Deepwater Horizon’ From J.C. Chandor

Peter Berg Takes Over ‘Deepwater Horizon’ From J.C. Chandor

    Deepwater Horizon director

J.C. Chandor, who raced from Margin Call to All Is Lost to A Most Violent Year, has left the director’s chair of the upcoming film Deepwater Horizon. The reason? Our old friend “creative differences,” at least as far as the official knowledge base goes. Now, coming in to replace him, is Peter Berg, whose most recent film was Lone Survivor. The link to the new Deepwater Horizon director may be Mark Wahlberg, who is set to star in the film, and was also the lead in Lone Survivor.

The Wrap reports; Lionsgate and Participant Media are backing the film, and Lorenzo di Bonaventura is producing.

The film is based on the New York Times article ‘Deepwater Horizon’s Final Hour’ by David Barstow, David Rohde, and Stephanie Saul, which chronicled how the explosion on a Gulf of Mexico oil rig in 2010 killed 11 people, injured 17 more, and spilled oil into the gulf for months.

Liam Neeson and Michael Keaton may also end up co-starring in the new movie, which follows the events of the 2010 BP oil spill. Mark Wahlberg will play Mike Williams, who was the supervisor on the Deepwater Horizon oil rig, after which the movie is obviously named. We don’t know what the roles for Neeson and Keaton might be.

Matthew Michael Carnahan, who wrote Berg’s film The Kingdom, is scripting.

Deepwater Horizon is set for release on September 30, 2016.

  • ‘Drunk Stoned Brilliant Dead: The Story of the National Lampoon’ Is a Must-Watch for Anyone Who Loves Pop Culture [Sundance 2015]

‘Drunk Stoned Brilliant Dead: The Story of the National Lampoon’ Is a Must-Watch for Anyone Who Loves Pop Culture [Sundance 2015]

    Drunk Stoned Brilliant Dead

Many people today don’t realize it, but much of modern comedy was born at the National Lampoon. John Hughes, Al Jean, Bill Murray, Chevy Chase, John Landis, Ivan Reitman and John Belushi are just some of the famous names who got their start through something related to the once-popular humor magazine, created in 1970.

Drunk Stoned Brilliant Dead: The Story of the National Lampoon, directed by Douglas Tirola, tells the complete history of this incredible brand. Simultaneously, the film documents much of the humor we love today: Saturday Night Live, The Simpsons, and more. Below, read the rest of our Drunk Stoned Brilliant Dead review.

The best thing Drunk Stoned Brilliant Dead has going for it is the energy and humor of the National Lampoon. The film moves along at an MTV pace, bombarding the viewer with hilarious images, headlines and articles from the decades of the magazine. The talking heads are equally impressive: names like Chase, Landis, Reitman, Belushi’s widow Judy Belushi Pisano, Judd Apatow, Kevin Bacon, Tim Matheson, Billy Bob Thornton and many more. There’s always something funny on the screen, even if it doesn’t quite mesh with the story being told.

That story follows Douglas Kenney and Henry Beard, the two friends who started the National Lampoon after attending Harvard and built it into a massive empire. Each man was a brilliant talent, but they were very different from one another, and their personalities are sort of the backbone of the film. Kenney provides the wild, over-the-top energy. Beard is the more organized and quiet rock of the organization. Those two tones pretty much sum up the movie, very serious on one hand, but also crazy.

The film then gets into the massively influential National Lampoon radio show, stage plays, and eventually Animal House and Caddyshack, which kind of changed everything in different ways. Along the way, Drunk Stoned Brilliant Dead also takes time to step back and reveal how the humor in the Lampoon was perfect for its time. It’s very thorough.

If you know anything about the National Lampoon, Drunk Stoned Brilliant Dead, probably won’t blow you away. But I didn’t, so it did, and no matter what, the film is a must-watch for anyone interested in the history of pop culture.

    /Film rating: 8 of 10

  • J.K. Simmons and Spider-Man: Actor Hints at J. Jonah Jameson’s Return

J.K. Simmons and Spider-Man: Actor Hints at J. Jonah Jameson’s Return

J.K. Simmons Spider Man J Jonah Jameson

When it comes to superhero movies, fans are sticklers. They don’t want the Andrew Garfield Spider-Man films to link to the Tobey Maguire films. That wouldn’t make sense. They get angry when a studio casts the Human Torch as Captain America. How can one actor be both? The lone exception in all of this might be J. Jonah Jameson, played by J.K. Simmons. There’s no other character and actor pair that fans are not only willing to accept crossing film “universes” — they demand it.

The Amazing Spider-Man director Marc Webb got around this by not including the character in his films at all, but in a new interview, Simmons said he’s heard Spider-Man might be coming back. And he’d love to return, too. Read and listen to the J.K. Simmons Spider Man quotes below.

Simmons appeared on the January 28th episode of Sirius XM’s The Howard Stern Show. At the very end, he was asked about Spider-Man. You can hear the interview at this link, but here’s the conversation:

Stern: Hey, we doing another [Spider-Man] or what?

Simmons: I just heard that we…that’s a possibility.

    Stern: Would you do it?

    Simmons: Absolutely.

The fact Simmons is interested in reprising the character isn’t that big of a deal. What is a big deal is he said he heard it’s a possibility that there’s another Spider-Man movie. Here’s the issue though. Is he just referring to what we’ve all heard about some kind of new film coming out, be it Amazing Spider-Man 3, an animated version, Sinister Six or something else? Or is Simmons talking about something behind the scenes we don’t know about? Something that he’d be a part of? It’s not 100% clear but is open to both interpretations for sure.

In the case of Spider-Man, where the main character himself is up in the air, I tend to believe Simmons is talking in more general terms. J. Jonah Jameson would probably not be the first person to hear about a new Spider-Man movie. Unless, because he’s on the Oscar tour, he’s spoken to some Sony/Marvel bigwigs.

What do you think Simmons is referring to here?

  • In-Flight VR Coming to Australian Airline

In-Flight VR Coming to Australian Airline

Australian airline Qantas has announced a partnership with Samsung to bring the technology company’s Gear VR headsets to the cabin, beginning with a trial run for first-class fliers starting next month.

As part of the test run, Gear VR headsets will be available to Qantas fliers in the Sydney and Melbourne International Airport first-class lounges, and also in first-class on select A380 flights from Australia to Los Angeles.

Qantas points out that it is the only airline anywhere to offer in-flight VR.

This trial run will span three months, and Qantas will seek fliers’ feedback to see if offering VR to customers is something the company wants to take on in a larger, more official capacity.

“This technology gives us a completely new way to connect with our customers,” Qantas marketing executive Olivia Wirth said.

Some of the Qantas VR experiences will include virtual tours of the company’s new first-class lounges at Los Angeles Airport, as well as a VR simulation of landing. Other in-flight entertainment options will include movies and audio experiences.

Qantas will also use the Gear VR headset to let passengers take virtual trips to one of the airline’s other destinations, which they say should inspire travel and promote tourism.

It’s already happening. Qantas points out that Australian company Tourism NT has already partnered with the airline to create a 3D VR experience for Kakadu National Park that will be shown to fliers.

The Gear VR headsets will be available on select Qantas flights for first-class passengers beginning in mid-February, with another rollout in March for trips between Australia and Los Angeles.

For long-haul flights such as the trip between Australia and LA, it’s not hard to see the appeal of being able to totally block out other passengers and virtually escape for a while. And for Qantas, letting travelers virtually experience other destinations instead of just looking at a tourism brochure seems like it could have some upside for ticket sales.

Samsung’s Gear VR headset launched in December, and is available now for $200 through an “Innovator Edition.” The device requires a Note 4 to function as the screen.

  • Metroid Prime Trilogy Out Now on Wii U

The acclaimed Metroid Prime Trilogy is now available on Wii U across Europe and North America, and for the first week Nintendo is offering the digital re-release at half price.

The Retro Studios-developed first person adventure games, the first of which GameSpot described as “not just one of the single most atmospheric games ever created, but it’s also quite simply one of the best,” is available for $10 in the US and £9 in the UK. Next week the trilogy will return to its usual listing price of $20 and £18.

This offer marks the third re-release of Wii games on Nintendo’s Wii U platform, following the listings of Super Mario Galaxy 2 and Punch-Out.

While Wii game discs can play on the Wii U, users need to enter the console’s emulator in order to play them. These re-releases remove that barrier, and also offer 1080p output.

More re-releases are in the pipeline, such as the Wii edition of Sin and Punishment. A Wii Remote and Nunchuk is required to play.

  • Sega to Axe 300 Jobs as Focus Turns to PC and Mobile

A drastic and sweeping restructure is underway at Sega as the publisher attempts to “drastically improve profitability,” with more than 300 jobs at risk, a headquarter relocation underway, and a new focus away from games consoles.

Sega issued a notice to investors on Friday explaining that it expects to make just $34 million in net profit by the end of the financial year; a nosedive in performance compared to the $260 million it made the year prior.

Around 300 staff are scheduled to be made redundant, while Sega’s San Francisco headquarters will be relocated–likely by summer–to southern California.

[Update: Sega Europe has issued a statement to GameSpot suggesting that its development teams, such as Sports Interactive and The Creative Assembly, might not be affected by the consultation process. Though the details were not explicitly clear at this early stage, Sega Europe has suggested that the focus of the downsizing is on the publishing business.

“We are under consultation with a limited number of staff in the European publishing business and will be able to confirm decisions regarding any potential redundancies in the coming weeks.” Update Ends]

The struggling publisher, which formed in the 1940s and shifted its business into video games by the late ’80s, will also reposition its business to center it around “smartphone and PC online gaming.”

Although drastic measures, Sega has been planning this shift in business since May 2014. To what extent this will further narrow its games console business is unclear. Sega’s key releases of 2014 were Alien: Isolation, Rome 2 Total War, and Sonic Boom.

The corporation said: “SEGA has positioned Digital Games, particularly smartphone and PC online gaming, as a growth area and has determined to implement the following measures in order to constantly post profits by improving management efficiency while promptly promoting redistribution of management resources.”

  • New Hearthstone Adventure Coming April, Report Claims

Hearthstone‘s next single-player expansion is expected to go live in April, according to a new report with details from a purported insider at Blizzard.

An article by Yahoo Finance contributor, Tae Kim, suggests that the new Hearthstone content update will be “PVE focused”, which suggests it will be a similar proposition to the Naxxramas update that shipped in July.

These single-player expansions pit players against toughened AI, and if Naxxramas is any indication, against heroes who use unique cards and abilities to swing the game to their advantage.

Blizzard has declined to comment on the rumours.

Tae Kim, who says his information comes from am employee at Activision Blizzard, also claims that Hearthstone’s user numbers have rocketed since September, when it was revealed that the game had accumulated some 20 million players. Since then, the collectable card game has expanded with Android support, as well as the major Goblins vs Gnomes expansion.

According to the alleged Blizzard employee, the game has now surpassed 75 million players. The user numbers were described as “off the charts.”

Meanwhile, it’s claimed that the Hearthstone team is “also experimenting with a 2 vs 2 version”. It’s not clear whether this means two heroes versus two, or a pair of players sharing command of a single hero.

GameSpot has contacted Blizzard for further clarification and comment.

Hearthstone won GameSpot’s Mobile Game of the Year award in December, and was a nominee for overall Game of the Year.

  • Ouya Gets $10 Million Investment From E-Commerce Company Alibaba

Ouya Gets $10 Million Investment From E-Commerce Company Alibaba

Chinese e-commerce company Alibaba has invested $10 million in the Android-based Ouya microconsole. According to a report on the Wall Street Journal, Alibaba has partnered with Ouya Inc. to discuss a plan that will incorporate the Ouya’s software into Alibaba’s own “set top-box.”

China lifted its 13-year ban on the sale of video game consoles in 2013. Since then, a number of companies have entered the potentially lucrative Chinese market, with Microsoft launching the Xbox One in China in September last year. Sony’s own plans to launch the PS4 in China were delayed earlier this month. Reports of Ouya entering the Chinese market surfaced in September last year, with allegations stating that the company had partnered with smartphone giant Xiaomi Inc to bring Ouya games to Xiaomi’s streaming boxes and smart TVs.

Alibaba is an electronic commerce company that offers a variety of sales services, with an estimated market value of $231 billion as of September last year. The company’s consumer-to-consumer site Taobao ranks in the top 20 of the most-visited websites in the world.

The original Kickstarter campaign for the Ouya concluded with $8.6 million in crowdfunding. The company went on to secure an additional $15 million through venture capital funding in 2013. The console officially went on sale for $99 in 2013, but it has failed to gather much attention.
