  • Borderlands 3’s Bloody Harvest Event Tricks and Treats its Way Onto PS4 Later This Week

    New skins, weapon, and boss.

Numerous Games as a Service will be making the case for you to check out their Halloween events over the next couple of weeks, one of which is Borderlands 3. Already announced a handful of weeks back, the free Bloody Harvest event will bring terror to PlayStation 4 players in just a few days from Thursday 24th October.

Lasting right up until the beginning of December, vault hunters will be able to get their hands on a new legendary weapon, new character skins, weapon trinkets, and a new Echo Device skin. Taking down an all-new boss is what you’ll need to do in order to acquire them, but the standard enemies you’ll find across each and every one of Borderlands 3’s planets haven’t been left out in the cold. They too have received a spooky makeover.

  • Fighting Games Need to Be Built from the Ground Up for Streaming, Says Street Fighter Producer

    Stream fighter.

Most video game genres can translate well to a streaming service if you’ve got a good enough connection, but there’s one type of experience that is always going to suffer no matter what. Fighting games, especially when played competitively, rely on frame-perfect combo moves and intricate playstyles the further up you go, and any amount of lag is going to be a detriment to that. It’s unplayable for professional players, and it looks like Street Fighter producer Yoshinori Ono agrees.

During a panel at EGX 2019, the Capcom figurehead said that if a fighting game were to take advantage of streaming services, it would need to be built from the ground up for it. “The thing is that the current games are only transmitting the actual inputs and commands across the network and all the graphics and so forth are handled locally, even then we have difficulty getting it working right.” Ono then goes on to state that doing Street Fighter V on the likes of Google Stadia would be too difficult at the current level.

  • Street Fighter Producer Yoshinori Ono ‘Would Love to See’ Final Fight Return

    To repay his investment.

Capcom and its employees can’t stop talking about reviving the company’s older IPs at the moment. After stating that the Japanese publisher plans on bringing back some of its classic franchises off the back of Resident Evil 2 and Onimusha: Warlords, one of the studio’s most recognisable figureheads got in on the act.

Yoshinori Ono, the producer of Street Fighter IV and Street Fighter V, said that he “would love to see” the return of Capcom’s classic fighting series – Final Fight. Speaking at EGX 2019, Ono said: “The one I invested the most money into whenever I was still a player was Final Fight and I’d love to see that come back someday. You know, sometimes I write up little concepts by myself but they don’t really get anywhere so you never know in the future.”

  • Random: This Is What a Storm Could Look Like on PS5

    Bring the rain.

There’s nothing better than a big storm to add plenty of foreboding atmosphere to a scene. Batman: Arkham Knight, for example, was set in a perpetually rainy sandbox – it was depressing, but it suited the miserable mood of Rocksteady’s game. How good could thunder and lightning look on PlayStation 5, then? Real good if this Unreal Engine 4 tech demo is anything to go by.

Despite looking like it would require a server farm to run, it’s actually being powered by a fairly modest graphics card in an NVidia GTX 970. So could we see these kind of effects on next-gen hardware? Well, you have to take into account that this is a fairly restricted demo – adding a storm like this to a modern open world title (with other characters, physics, and logic) would probably lead to compromises.

  • Feature: Burnout Needs to Bring Arcade Racers Back with a Bang

    We are the lazy generation.

Criterion Games made a name for itself with its blisteringly fast racing series, Burnout. Starting off as a small team with a small project, the original game was a modest but thrilling arcade racer all about rocketing your way through traffic. With each new game, Criterion added more and more to the experience, and with Burnout 3: Takedown, the franchise finally reached its full potential. A peerless arcade racing title, the third entry was published by EA, and saw the series balloon in popularity. Not only was Criterion able to reach a wider audience with this increased funding, it had created a bit of a monster.

The developer would go on to release a few more Burnout games with Revenge, Dominator, and Paradise. Fans all have a favourite title, but the core values remain the same across all of them: insane speed, gorgeously slick arcade handling, and devastating destruction. If it wasn’t clear, we love Burnout.

  • Insomniac Games Celebrates Sony Acquisition By Partying the Night Away

    Shu Yoshida with the goodies.

It’s been exactly two months since Sony acquired Marvel’s Spider-Man developer Insomniac Games, but it appears that the team at the Burbank campus has only just gotten around to celebrating the purchase properly. The studio has put on a special team lunch for all employees, with the likes of PlayStation’s Mark Cerny and Shuhei Yoshida in attendance.

After dedicating a moment of silence to Craig Goodman, one of the studio’s artists who recently passed away from brain cancer, Insomniac Games’ CEO Ted Price had a few quick words to share with his fellow employees. Shu Yoshida then followed that up by discussing Spyro the Dragon and even handing out PS4 Pros and a copy of Marvel Spider-Man’s Game of the Year edition to everyone in attendance.

  • Review: Pig Eat Ball – Solid Swine Arcade Action

    Sow good.

Don’t let its rudimentary title deceive you: action-puzzler Pig Eat Ball is a fun homage to arcade titles that develops into a surprisingly deep experience with a quirky plot. You play as Princess Bow, a young pig forced into marriage when (like any good princess) she wants adventure in the great wide somewhere. Your overall goal is to collect pearls to power your father King Cake’s space station, which is achieved by competing in contests for clams. These mini-games range from sucking up tennis balls to destroying terrain; there’s a great variety.

With its pixel art aesthetic and mobile game scoring system, Pig Eat Ball might appear little more than a time killer. Yet, after the basic introductory stages, you’ll find great level design that carefully crafts a need to think outside the box. This makes most of the puzzles a joy to figure out, though there are those that feel dissonant; while most clams work to a theme based on a new skill learned, there are puzzles scattered in that are either too easy or irrelevant, seemingly existing for the sake of padding.

  • Capcom Gives Dino Crisis Fans Hope By Promising to ‘Revive Dormant IPs’

    Following in Onimusha’s shoes.

Capcom is sitting on a treasure trove of IPs just waiting to be revived. The Japanese publisher began to dig into its back catalogue earlier this year with the PlayStation 4 remaster of Onimusha: Warlords, and it looks like it plans to repeat the process once again.

In the company’s latest financial report for 2019, Capcom told investors that it “will revive dormant intellectual properties for which we have not recently released new titles by increasing the number of our developers.” While its main priority lies in curating its biggest games such as Monster Hunter: World and upcoming Resident Evil titles, Capcom has stated that it plans to “utilize dormant IP”.

  • Returning to ANTHEM May Just Be the Scariest Thing You Can Do This Halloween

    Trick or treat?

Halloween is a holiday flush with abandoned areas, so perhaps it’s not all that strange that BioWare has opted to celebrate the season. The oft-forgotten ANTHEM has launched a new event to pull players back in; named the Season of Skulls, the looter-shooter’s latest content drop finds the folk of Bastion “rising up against the darkness with determination and defiance”.

It all boils down to a bunch of new combat arenas, which will function similarly to the title’s previous event, Cataclysm. You’ll earn Crystals for your efforts, which can be exchanged for War Chests and other items. You’ll also be able to complete daily and seasonal challenges for bonus cosmetic items. Of course, the true shocker here is that the game continues to be updated at all.

  • PS5’s Controller Could Reduce Latency with PlayStation Now

    Direct input.

Sony’s been in the streaming business for years now, but it’s finally taking it seriously. As reported earlier today, PlayStation Now will continue to be supported on the PlayStation 5, and the console’s controller could have a big advantage for those looking to subscribe to the service. As discovered by Dutch website Techtastic, the manufacturer has filed a patent for technology that will effectively allow its controller to interface directly with a server.

What does this mean? Well, let’s look at how things currently work with the DualShock 4 with regards to PS Now: inputs are sent from the controller to the PlayStation 4. This information is then transferred from the PS4 to your router, which is then beamed to the Japanese giant’s server farm, prompting the software to respond. With this new technology, however, the signal would be sent directly from the peripheral to your router, skipping a step.
