Review: Ari Aster's Horror Film 'Hereditary' is Unsettling & Inescapable

    Hereditary Review

One in five Americans experiences some form of mental illness, with one in 25 suffering severe illness, such as bipolar disorder, schizophrenia, depression, or dissociative identity disorder (DID). For years, the horror genre has exploited these psychiatric disorders for shock value, perpetuating myths and stereotypes along the way. Movies like Psycho, Halloween, and Silence of the Lambs use mental illness as the motivation for the antagonist’s violent behavior. More recently, films like The Taking of Deborah Logan and The Visit have used neurodegenerative diseases like Alzheimer’s as a conduit for evil deeds. With Hereditary, A24’s new horror film, writer/director Ari Aster explores the darkest depths of mental illness and familial tragedy to create a profoundly disquieting moviegoing experience that stays with you long after the closing credits. ›››

  • New US Trailer for Action-Packed Oz Alien Invasion Film 'Occupation'

New US Trailer for Action-Packed Oz Alien Invasion Film 'Occupation'

    Occupation Trailer

“We fight, or we die.” Saban Films has released a brand new official US trailer for the Australian sci-fi alien invasion thriller titled Occupation, from writer/director Luke Sparke. We posted the international trailer for this a few weeks ago and this looks even worse. The film is about a small group of town residents who have to band together after a devastating ground invasion from alien invaders. As they struggle to survive, they realize they must stay one step ahead of their attackers, and work together for a chance to strike back. The big Aussie cast includes Temuera Morrison, Stephany Jacobsen, Dan Ewing, Rhiannon Fish, Zachary Garred, Izzy Stevens, Charles Terrier, Charles Mesure, Felix Williamson, Jacqueline McKenzie, and Bruce Spence. This seems like another awful Red Dawn remake of sorts, and this trailer doesn’t even show the aliens like the other trailer. Probably because they know they look bad? Watch below. ›››

  • First Trailer for 'The Old Man and The Gun' Starring Robert Redford

First Trailer for 'The Old Man and The Gun' Starring Robert Redford

The Old Man and The Gun

“Look at that – is he smiling?” Fox Searchlight has debuted the first official trailer for The Old Man and The Gun, the latest feature film written & directed by David Lowery (Ain’t Them Bodies Saints, Pete’s Dragon, A Ghost Story). The film is based on and tells the true story of Forrest Tucker, from his audacious escape from San Quentin at the age of 70 to an unprecedented string of heists that confounded authorities and enchanted the public. Robert Redford stars as Forrest, and the cast includes Casey Affleck, Sissy Spacek, Danny Glover, Tom Waits, and Tika Sumpter. As expected, this looks wonderful – Lowery has been on a roll and only seems to be getting even better with every new film he makes. I love the vintage, film grain look to this – makes it feel like a heist film from a whole other time. It’s going to be good. Watch below. ›››

  • Impressive Full Trailer for 'Mortal Engines' Produced by Peter Jackson

Impressive Full Trailer for 'Mortal Engines' Produced by Peter Jackson

    Mortal Engines Trailer

“I’ve been looking for you for a long time.” Universal has debuted the full-length official trailer for the sci-fi adaptation Mortal Engines, based on a popular book series. This adaptation has been in the works for years, in development by Peter Jackson and the LOTR/Hobbit team. Jackson is not directing, instead he’s letting a VFX supervisor from Weta make his directorial debut. The fantastically eccentric ensemble cast includes Hugo Weaving, Hera Hilmar, Robert Sheehan, Jihae, Ronan Raftery, Leila George, Patrick Malahide, and Stephen Lang. While they’re still not done yet, this does have some amazing VFX from Weta. The plot in this, which reminds me a bit of Dune at first glance, is about huge cities that move around and battle against each other. I have to say – I’m very impressed, this looks awesome, with a huge scope and scale that seems like it might be exciting to get into this world. You might want to check this out. ›››

  • Oscar Isaac as a Mossad Agent in First Full Trailer for 'Operation Finale'

Oscar Isaac as a Mossad Agent in First Full Trailer for 'Operation Finale'

    Operation Finale

“If it is him, we need an elite crew.” MGM Studios has released the first trailer for Chris Weitz’s next new film, titled Operation Finale, a film about Mossad agents in Argentina tracking down Adolf Eichmann, the infamous Nazi architect of the Holocaust. Based on a true story, Oscar Isaac stars as Peter Malkin who heads down to Argentina with a team of secret agents in hopes of finding and capturing Eichmann. The huge ensemble cast for this thriller includes Ben Kingsley, Lior Raz, Melanie Laurent, Nick Kroll, Joe Alwyn, Haley Lu Richardson, Michael Aronov, Ohad Knoller, Greg Hill, Torben Liebrecht, Mike Hernandez, Greta Scacchi, and Pêpê Rapazote. This looks damn good, the voiceover and the way the score builds is terrific. And it also looks good because Oscar Isaac is always awesome in anything. ›››

First Trailer for Animated Sequel 'The Lego Movie 2: The Second Part'

The Lego Movie 2: The Second Part Trailer

“Oh no… Something new. What is it up to?” Warner Bros has debuted the first teaser trailer for The Lego Movie 2: The Second Part, the sequel to the wildly successful and highly acclaimed original The Lego Movie released in 2014. This one isn’t directed by Phil Lord & Chris Miller, but they did write the screenplay and they did produce it, so they’re definitely still involved. This time around, the citizens of Bricksburg must fight off Duplo invaders from outer space. The voice cast includes Chris Pratt, Alison Brie, Stephanie Beatriz, Elizabeth Banks, Channing Tatum, Will Arnett, Nick Offerman, Jonah Hill, and Tiffany Haddish. WB already made two other Lego “spin-off” movies about Batman and Ninjago in the meantime, but they’re bringing it back to the original story about Emmet Brickowski and Wyldstyle. This may only be a teaser, but it looks great already. The amusing Mad Max-esque opening is funny, I dig it. Check it out below. ›››

  • Teaser Trailer for Travis Knight's 80s 'Bumblebee' with Hailee Steinfeld

Teaser Trailer for Travis Knight's 80s 'Bumblebee' with Hailee Steinfeld

    Bumblebee Trailer

“You’ve got people out there who need you.” Paramount has debuted a teaser trailer for Travis Knight’s Bumblebee, a new spin-off movie from the Transformers series that’s set in the 1980s. The film is about the friendship between a young woman named Charlie and Bumblebee, on the run and living in a junkyard in a small Californian beach town. Hailee Steinfeld stars as Charlie, along with John Cena, Martin Short, Pamela Adlon, Megyn Price, Kenneth Choi, and John Ortiz. This actually looks like a nice step back from Michael Bay’s crazy epic Transformers movies, and it’s especially nice to see someone other than Bay directing this time. Even if you are totally over the Transformers series, this is still worth a watch, it might be the best one since the very first Transformers movie. I’m more than curious now. Watch below. ›››

    White Boy Rick Trailer

“You’re going to get in too deep, and they’re never going to let you out.” Sony has debuted the first official trailer for White Boy Rick, a true story drama starring Matthew McConaughey. This is the second film directed by French filmmaker Yann Demange, who made the outstanding Irish thriller ’71 previously (which is worth a watch if you haven’t seen it yet). The film is about a teenager who became an undercover informant for the FBI during the 1980s and was ultimately arrested for drug-trafficking and sentenced to life in prison. The cast includes Jennifer Jason Leigh, Rory Cochrane, Bel Powley, Eddie Marsan, Brian Tyree Henry, Bruce Dern, Piper Laurie, RJ Cyler, and Jonathan Majors. This actually looks better than expected, half because the 80’s vibe, and half because Demange is a great director. Take a look. ›››

  • Full Trailer for Disney's 'Ralph Breaks the Internet: Wreck-It Ralph 2'

Full Trailer for Disney's 'Ralph Breaks the Internet: Wreck-It Ralph 2'

Ralph Breaks the Internet: Wreck-It Ralph 2 Trailer

“What kind of a princess are you?” Disney has debuted a full-length official trailer for the animated sequel Wreck-It Ralph 2, titled in full Ralph Breaks the Internet: Wreck-It Ralph 2. This is the latest big movie from Disney Animation in Burbank, and it looks like so much fun, of course. John C. Reilly returns as the voice of Ralph, the “bad guy” who is really a good guy, from the first Wreck-It Ralph released in 2012. This time he follows Vanellope, voiced again by Sarah Silverman, into the internet and there they meet the “netizens”, getting in all kinds of trouble and, as the title says, they wind up breaking the internet. The full cast features Taraji P. Henson, Kelly Macdonald, Kristen Bell, Mandy Moore, Alan Tudyk, Jane Lynch, Idina Menzel, Jack McBrayer, and Jodi Benson. This looks like a worthy sequel, going bigger and better but still maintaining the heart and honesty and goofiness of the first movie. And the bit with the princesses at the end is epic – I can’t believe they’re doing this. This is going to be a huge hit. Enjoy. ›››

Dakota Johnson in Freaky First Trailer for Luca Guadagnino's 'Suspiria'

    Luca Guadagnino's Suspiria Trailer

“Listen for the whispers…” Amazon Studios has debuted the first teaser trailer for Luca Guadagnino’s fresh new take on Suspiria, remaking the classic Dario Argento horror film from 1977. This is also Guadagnino’s follow up to his hugely successful Call Me By Your Name. This Suspiria is set in Berlin, but follows a similar story of a young dance student who joins a dance company in Berlin. But weird things start to happen to the people around her. The incredible cast includes Dakota Johnson in the lead role, along with Tilda Swinton, Lutz Ebersdorf, Chloe Moretz, Mia Goth, Renée Soutendijk, Jessica Harper, Sylvie Testud, Angela Winkler, Malgorzata Bela, and Ingrid Caven. This is just a teaser so they don’t reveal too much yet, but there is some freaky footage in this. And most of all, it just looks like Guadagnino is about to deliver another crazy brilliant film that may live up to the original or even surpass it. Take a look below. ›››
