  • ‘Regression’ Teaser: Is Emma Watson Haunted by Satanists?

    Regression teaser

Chilean director Alejandro Amenábar, who directed Open Your Eyes, The Sea Inside, and The Others, goes back to dark atmospheres once again with Regression, which stars Emma Watson and Ethan Hawke. (You’ve seen the picture above, so you probably knew that.)

We find their characters in Minnesota in 1990, where Watson’s character accuses her father and others of coercing her into some unspeakable deeds. Hawke plays a detective investigating, and David Thewlis plays a psychologist who helps with the inquiry. Now we’ve got a Regression teaser, and a great poster, both of which you can see below.

There’s almost certainly more to this case than what this teaser shows, and the story seems to draw on a few different instances of real-world crimes and paranoia. The ’80s and ’90s accusations of parents involved in Satanic ritual abuse clearly factor into this, as do other cases of accused and proven mass sexual abuse. So is Watson’s memory of a black mass something that has been induced, or that she created to deal with other abuse, or is there some legit Satanism at play here?

Regression is set for release on August 28. David Dencik, Lothaire Bluteau, and Devon Bostick also appear.

    Trailer via YouTube.

Minnesota, 1990. Detective Bruce Kenner (Ethan Hawke) investigates the case of young Angela (Emma Watson), who accuses her father, John Gray (David Dencik), of an unspeakable crime. When John unexpectedly and without recollection admits guilt, renowned psychologist Dr. Raines (David Thewlis) is brought in to help him relive his memories and what they discover unmasks a horrifying nationwide mystery.

  • James Franco Starring in Adaptation of Stephen King’s ’11/22/63′ From JJ Abrams’ Bad Robot

    11/22/68 TV series

I love this image of James Franco, but he’ll probably look a bit more dignified when he travels back in time to stop the killing of John F. Kennedy. The pic above is from the last time the actor was involved in an assassination story, when he was the one potentially doing the killing. Now he’s changing sides. Franco is now set to star in the 11/22/63 TV series, which Hulu will air as an adaptation of the novel by Stephen King, produced by J.J. Abrams’ company Bad Robot.

In the 2011 novel by King, a Maine-based high school teacher is shown a time portal hidden in the back of a diner. The man who shows him this portal — which always sends anyone who travels through it back to 1958 — had planned to use it to prevent the assassination of JFK.

But that first guy’s poor health made the job impossible, and so he passes the responsibility on to the teacher. But there are problems with the plan, not least with the fact that time doesn’t really want to be altered.

The Wrap reports Franco’s starring gig as the teacher Jake Epping, and says he’s a producer on the nine-hour “event series.”

The 11/22/63 TV series will air on Hulu, but as a production is based at J.J. Abrams‘ Bad Robot Productions. Bridget Carpenter (The Red Road, Friday Night Lights”), who will write and executive produce the series.

  • ‘The Man From U.N.C.L.E.’ Trailer: Henry Cavill and Armie Hammer Are ’60s Spies

    Man From UNCLE trailer

Henry Cavill took a break from being Superman to be The Man From U.N.C.L.E. for Warner Bros. and Guy Ritchie, and now you can see the first footage of him in action. The film features Cavill and Armie Hammer as a pair of unlikely American and Russian spies who work together in the swinging ’60s and the Cold War.

Imagine a spy movie with the action sensibility of Ritchie’s Sherlock Holmes movies, filtered through the visual sense of the first couple seasons of Mad Men and you’ll be in the ballpark. Check out the Man From UNCLE trailer below.

The Man From U.N.C.L.E. opens in the US on August 14. Trailer via Warner Bros.

Henry Cavill (“Man of Steel”) stars as Napoleon Solo opposite Armie Hammer (“The Social Network”) as Illya Kuryakin in director Guy Ritchie’s “The Man from U.N.C.L.E.,” a fresh take on the hugely popular 1960s television series.

Set against the backdrop of the early 1960s, at the height of the Cold War, “The Man from U.N.C.L.E.” centers on CIA agent Solo and KGB agent Kuryakin. Forced to put aside longstanding hostilities, the two team up on a joint mission to stop a mysterious international criminal organization, which is bent on destabilizing the fragile balance of power through the proliferation of nuclear weapons and technology. The duo’s only lead is the daughter of a vanished German scientist, who is the key to infiltrating the criminal organization, and they must race against time to find him and prevent a worldwide catastrophe.

  • ‘Aloha’ Trailer: Cameron Crowe’s Latest Features Bradley Cooper and Emma Stone

    Cameron Crowe Aloha

Cameron Crowe‘s latest film, Aloha, now has a trailer. It’s been a film somewhat shrouded in mystery. The project didn’t have a title for a long time, then was delayed, but now many questions about the film have been answered.

Aloha opens May 29. It stars Bradley Cooper, Rachel McAdams, Emma Stone, Danny McBride, John Krasinski, Alec Baldwin and Bill Murray. Check out the Cameron Crowe Aloha trailer below.

    Aloha trailer

Thanks to People for the trailer.

So basically the movie is what we’d heard. A military contractor screws up something royally, but then gets assigned to Hawaii to oversee a satellite launch. There, he has to deal with his ex-girlfriend, a new flame and more.

I mean – it’s a Cameron Crowe movie. That’s exciting. You can see those Crowe moments in there, the solid dialogue, the awesome use of music. But I really feel like one of two things is in play here. Either the movie is impossible to market or we have a problem. I’m gonna hope for the former. You don’t get a cast like that, a few of which are going to be coming off fresh Oscar-nominates, without a script that makes sense and works as an uplifting, unique story.

I keep thinking back to movies like Jerry Maguire, Almost Famous or Say Anything. Those are all pretty odd movies if you just write down their log lines but, ultimately, they work right? I’m hoping it’s the same for Aloha. A complicated movie that works when you watch it, but isn’t easily digestible in a 2 minute trailer.

Note: this film was originally called Deep Tiki, had Ben Stiller and Reese Witherspoon attached, and was a very similar story but had lots of Hawaiian gods in it. It’s a weird movie no matter what form it’s in.

  • ‘Jauja’ Trailer: Viggo Mortensen in a South American Western

    Jauja trailer

Jauja looks like a western, but it really takes place in Patagonia in the late 1800s — and the film’s aspect ratio and general sense of tone reinforce the idea of this being something from decades past. Viggo Mortensen stars as a military captain working with the Argentine army, and the film appears to put his facility with languages to great use. Lisandro Alonso directs, and this looks like a very beautiful and unusual film for an audience that wants to see something different. Check out the Jauja trailer below.

Even if this isn’t set in the American west, there are some other western film concepts here: the remote location, with lines drawn between friendly and enemy territory. Then there’s the fact that Mortensen’s character’s daughter disappears into the wilderness, leading him on a search to find her. Combine those elements with the apparent tone of the film and the gorgeous score — also by Mortensen! — this seems like a movie for those who really like Jarmusch’s Dead Man.

Jauja opens on March 20 in New York and March 27 in Los Angeles, followed by a national release. Trailer via The Playlist.

An astonishingly beautiful and gripping Western starring Viggo Mortensen, JAUJA (pronounced how-ha) begins in a remote outpost in Patagonia during the late 1800s. Captain Gunnar Dinesen has come from abroad with his fifteen year-old daughter to take an engineering job with the Argentine army. Being the only female in the area, Ingeborg creates a stir among the men. She falls in love with a young soldier, and one night they run away together. When Dinesen realizes what has happened, he decides to venture into enemy territory, against his men’s wishes, to find the young couple. Featuring a superb performance from Mortensen, JAUJA (the name suggests a fabled city of riches sought by European explorers) is the story of a man’s desperate search for his daughter, a solitary quest that takes him to a place beyond time, where the past vanishes and the future has no meaning.

    Jaws

If you’re as crazy about movies as we are, then hopefully you’ve seen Jaws countless times. It’s a classic Steven Spielberg film that has stood the test of time and is not just one of the director’s best films, but simply one of the best films ever made in general, not to mention being the first legitimate blockbuster. But for film nerds, Jaws should also serve as a lesson in nearly flawless filmmaking, and Antonios Papantoniou ha taken the time to examine nine scenes from the film as part of his “Shot by Shot” series, paying very close attention to camera angles and movements, shot types, lengths of shots, and more. Amy Schumer & Bill Hader in Judd Apatow's First 'Trainwreck' Trailer

    Trainwreck

I like Tom’s sweater. Does he teach computer in a church basement?” Director Judd Apatow is back on the big screen this summer with his latest comedy Trainwreck, and this time it’s Amy Schumer in the lead as a single girl who finds her comfortable life dating around interrupted by what might be the perfect guy. Sounds like pretty boring romantic comedy fare, but this is an Apatow comedy we’re talking about, and it looks hilarious. Bill Hader looks to make a splash as a romantic leading man, and there’s a pretty great cameo from John Cena, not to mention what seems to be a supporting role for LeBron James. Watch! ›››
