Cannes Review: Woody Allen's 'Irrational Man' Isn't His Best Effort

    Irrational Man

Reporting from the Cannes Film Festival. Two recurring themes in Woody Allen’s filmography are murder and dangerous love affairs. His latest is Irrational Man and it continues this trend with mixed results. But mostly it will leave you with thoughts of revisiting Allen’s better efforts like Crimes and Misdemeanors, Match Point and Cassandra’s Dream. His latest film (which just premiered at Cannes) takes place in a concentrated college town where everyone seems to know each other and privacy is nonexistent. Insecure philosophy professor Abe Lucas (played by Joaquin Phoenix) has just been hired at the fictional Braylin College and it’s treated like an atom bomb of gossip by the faculty and student body. ›››

    Cooties Trailer

You are what they eat. Lionsgate Premiere has debuted a trailer for the Sundance midnight film Cooties, about an elementary school full kids that gets transformed into zombies. Only the teachers can’t get sick (the way they explain this in the trailer is super cheesy and yet oddly still amusing). Elijah Wood, Alison Pill, Rainn Wilson, Sunny May Allison, Armani Jackson, Leigh Whannell and Morgan Lily star in this horror comedy “with unexpected laughs and unapologetic thrills.” The trailer doesn’t seem to give away all of it, so have fun and let us know if you’re interested in catching cooties. Check out the poster below as well. ›››

  • Roger Deakins Will Be Cinematographer on Villeneuve's 'Blade Runner'

Roger Deakins Will Be Cinematographer on Villeneuve's 'Blade Runner'

    Roger Deakins / Blade Runner

This is when everyone should finally lose their sh*t. It has been officially announced that the new Blade Runner movie, being directed by Denis Villeneuve, will feature Roger Deakins as cinematographer. What?! DEAKINS?! Awesome, just awesome. Roger Deakins is one of the best cinematographers working today, only rivaled by the likes of Emmanuel Lubezki or Janusz Kaminski . He has been working with Denis Villeneuve on his last two films, shooting both Prisoners and Sicario (which just premiered at Cannes) for the Quebecois filmmaker. They’ll move onto Blade Runner, even though it likely won’t start shooting until 2016 sometime. No other details were revealed, and the press release doesn’t even mention Gosling (yet). ›››

Check Out This Poster for 'Pawn Sacrifice' Starring Tobey Maguire

    Pawn Sacrifice

On the board he fought the Cold War. In his mind he fought his madness. Bleecker Street Media has finally debuted a poster for the film Pawn Sacrifice, the long-delayed chess movie about the legendary Bobby Fischer. At one point David Fincher was attached to direct, but it was eventually made with Ed Zwick at the helm, and premiered at TIFF last year (read my review here). Tobey Maguire stars as Bobby Fischer, and Liev Schreiber (in one hell of a performance) plays his Russian rival, Boris Spassky. I really, really like this poster – while it does have the lead actor front and center, it’s unconventional in other ways, and I love the chess pattern design in the corner. Nice work, design agency. More posters as unique as this one, please. ›››

He's Back! New Trailer for 'The Terminator' Theatrical Re-Release

    The Terminator

“I’ll be back.” And now here he is. Almost 31 years after the release of the original, Park Circus is planning a global re-release of James Cameron’s The Terminator, the sci-fi classic that started the franchise. We all know they have a brand new Terminator movie coming out this summer, Terminator: Genisys (watch the trailer), also with Arnold Schwarzenegger as The Terminator again, so it’s likely all one big coordinated brand promotion across the entire world. Remind everyone of the original Terminator and bring that back to the forefront. Personally I prefer T2, but this first one is just as badass. And now I want to watch it again. ›››

Watch: First Trailer for Asif Kapadia's 'Amy' Doc About Winehouse

    Amy Winehouse Documentary

“I’m not a girl trying to be a star…” A24 has debuted the official trailer for Asif Kapadia’s documentary Amy, the story of English musician Amy Winehouse who died at age 27 in 2011. This trailer is timed with the film’s big premiere at the Cannes Film Festival this week, where it’s finally unraveling even though they seem to already have quotes galore in the trailer. From the director of Senna (a fantastic doc), Amy presents an inclusive look at the life of singer-songwriter Amy Winehouse, including the story of her success and subsequent downfall. Early word is that it’s another excellent doc from Kapadia, delving deep into the mind of someone as talented as Winehouse. I’m looking forward to catching this soon; opens in theaters this July. ›››

Watch: Jackie Chan Gets Serious in 'Police Story: Lockdown' Trailer

    Police Story: Lockdown Trailer

“Hey, supercop!” Well Go has put out a trailer for the upcoming US release of Police Story: Lockdown, the latest in the Police Story franchise starring Jackie Chan. The film actually played in China back in 2013, and is just now getting a release here in the US, but this isn’t the same goofy Jackie Chan we’ve seen so much of recently. He’s as serious as ever in an action-drama where a reunion with his daughter goes bad, and then there’s a big battle inside of a club. The cast includes Liu Ye, Jing Tian, Guli Nazha and Zhou Xiao Ou. I can’t say this looks like an instant must see, but I’m down to check it out. Give it a look below. ›››

Read This: Wired's Extensive Look at the History of VFX House ILM

    ILM 40 Years

Celebrating 40 Years of Creating the Impossible! If you are a movie lover, you know ILM. Also known as Industrial Light & Magic, ILM was originally created by George Lucas as an effects house for the original Star Wars, and lead the industry for decades in special effects. They were the first to introduce computer-generated FX into movies in Young Sherlock Holmes (and The Abyss), and have since revolutionized (and blazed trails in) the CGI VFX industry. ILM is not only preparing for a new Star Wars franchise, but they’re also the VFX house behind the new Warcraft movie as well as Michael Bay’s Transformers and Guillermo del Toro’s Pacific Rim. So, to celebrate, Wired has published a fascinating, extensive look at ILM’s history. ›››

  • Director Ed Zwick Reteaming with Tom Cruise for 'Jack Reacher 2'

Director Ed Zwick Reteaming with Tom Cruise for 'Jack Reacher 2'

Ed Zwick / Never Go Back

Now they have my attention. It’s being reported by Deadline that Paramount and Skydance are looking to hire Edward Zwick (aka Ed Zwick) for the in-development Jack Reacher sequel, which will once again star Tom Cruise. Based on Lee Child’s book series, the first film followed Cruise as Jack Reacher being framed for killing innocent people, and was directed by Christopher McQuarrie. While McQuarrie has since moved on to direct Mission: Impossible Rogue Nation, he will still be executive producing this. Cruise will return for Jack Reacher 2 with Zwick at the helm, directing a script by Richard Wenk that will be revised by Zwick and Marshall Herskovitz before they start filming. A few more details on this next one found below. ›››

Smash More Pixels in Full-Length Trailer for Sony's 'Pixels' Movie

    Pixels Trailer

“We’ve never faced a threat like this before.” Sony has debuted the second, full-length trailer for Pixels, the video game action adventure creation starring Adam Sandler and Kevin James and Pac-Man. It also stars Peter Dinklage, Michelle Monaghan, Josh Gad, and Sean Bean. After a fun teaser trailer, they finally explain more of the plot in thist railer, introducing each of the vintage arcade players who will take on these video game invaders (this does seem a bit similar to that “Futurama” episode). Pixels does look like it’s going to be fun to watch, I’ll give it that. I just hope the humor isn’t so bad, but you never know. Enjoy! ›››
