Review: Brad Bird's Sci-Fi 'Tomorrowland' is Full of Yesterday's Ideas

    Tomorrowland

For a film about avenues to a better future, Tomorrowland is sure working off a lot of yesterday’s ideas. These are big ideas, to be sure, and they’re ideas the film’s director, Brad Bird, can easily back up with some incredibly big effects. None of that, however, makes up for the banal slate of messages and themes, a hokey sense of humor, and a convoluted narrative that seems to hang its hat on the word “mystery.” Bird’s co-writer on the screenplay may have had a little something to do with that last bit. Tomorrowland, is a classic case of a project looking really good on paper that fumbles its way to messy execution. ›››

  • First Photos from Todd Phillips' New Movie 'Arms and the Dudes'

First Photos from Todd Phillips' New Movie 'Arms and the Dudes'

    Arms and the Dudes

Meet your new Arms Dealers, David and Efraim. After making three The Hangover movies, what is director Todd Phillips up to next? This is his next project, a movie called Arms and the Dudes, “based on a true story” of two young men who were contracted by the Pentagon to arm America’s allies in Afghanistan. Miles Teller plays David, Jonah Hill plays Efraim, to friends who suddenly start bidding on military contracts, but then they end up in-over-their-heads with the Afghanistan deal. This sounds like it might be really good, especially coming from the comedic mind of Todd Phillips. SlashFilm found four new photos posted online. ›››

Watch: New Trailer for Thriller 'Knock Knock' Starring Keanu Reeves

    Knock Knock Trailer

“You’ve been a very bad boy, Evan!” Voltage Pictures has debuted a full-length trailer for Eli Roth’s latest film Knock Knock, a wacky home invasion thriller starring Keanu Reeves. He plays the victim, though, and the invaders this time are two feisty, nasty girls – played by Lorenza Izzo and Ana de Armas. This first premiered at Sundance this January in the Midnight category, but didn’t up with any crazy buzz (nor did we have the chance to see it there). The setup is fairly interesting, but it almost turns into Funny Games half way through and doesn’t seem to go anywhere else. But I’ll watch pretty much anything Keanu stars in. ›››

  • Brad Pitt Back for 'World War Z' Sequel Set to Arrive in June 2017

Brad Pitt Back for 'World War Z' Sequel Set to Arrive in June 2017

    World War Z

Briefly: Paramount has confirmed and cleared contracts and deals for the next World War Z sequel, which is definitely moving forward. The studio has announced a release date of June 9th, 2017 two years from now for “World War Z 2” (though it will likely get a new title). Brad Pitt will be back to star again, and he’ll be working with director J.A. Bayona for this sequel, which will be “starting with a clean slate” according to the screenwriter. The first movie, based on Max Brooks’ beloved zombie book, showed zombies taking over the world in a global epidemic. Only Pitt was brave enough to keep hunting for a solution. We’ll keep an eye out for more updates as they continue to work on this sequel. The first movie opened in June of 2013.

    Meryl Streep & Hugh Grant

Well aren’t these two looking adorable? Pathé and BBC Films have debuted a first look photo at the film Florence Foster Jenkins, the latest from director Stephen Frears following Philomena, Lay the Favorite and Tamara Drewe. In Florence Foster Jenkins, Meryl Streep plays the legendary New York heiress who became an opera singer. Hugh Grant plays her partner St Clair Bayfield. The two can be seen riding in the back of a car, heading home from (what seems like) a night at Carnegie Hall. No release date is set yet, and the film just barely started shooting, so this is a very early first look and we likely won’t see this until 2016. ›››

  • Disney Sets Reese Witherspoon to Star in Live-Action 'Tink' Movie

Disney Sets Reese Witherspoon to Star in Live-Action 'Tink' Movie

    Reese Witherspoon - Tinkerbell

“Don’t you understand, Tink? You mean more to me than anything in this whole world!” More Tinkerbell? Yep. THR is reporting that Reese Witherspoon has been cast in Disney’s live-action film Tink, which will be another movie about Tinker Bell, to star Witherspoon. She will also help produce the project with her partner Bruna Papandrea at their company Pacific Standard. Alas, any plot details are unknown other than that the film is inspired by the world of the classic novel. That novel being “Peter and Wendy” written by J.M. Barrie, where the Tinker Bell character first originated from. No director is attached to this yet either. ›››

Watch: Intense First Trailer for Jay Martin's '7 Minutes' Heist Film

    7 Minutes

“This is our way out, it’s perfect.” Starz Digital has unveiled a trailer for Jay Martin’s 7 Minutes, a modern day intense heist movie about three friends forced to commit a brazen robbery, but end up in a “game of life-or-death”. There’s some interesting twists and turns that they hint at in the trailer; I’m curious who that guy is that pops up at the end with the shotgun. The cast includes Luke Mitchell, Leven Rambin, Jason Ritter, Kris Kristofferson, Joel Murray, Kevin Gage and Zane Holtz. The film is the feature debut of music video director Jay Martin, who also worked as a storyboard artist on a number of major features (I Am Legend, Catching Fire). It looks like it might be engaging, with some solid action throughout. Fire it up. ›››

Watch: Gorgeous Animated 'Celles et Ceux des Cimes et Cieux' Trailer

Celles et Ceux des Cimes et Cieux

Ohhhhh my goodness this is gorgeous!! If you love animation, or Miyazaki, or Studio Ghibli, or Syd Mead, or anything like that, this is a must watch. There is a short pitch video/trailer going around the web that has earned quite a bit of buzz (Open Culture states the “internet over in Japan was lit ablaze last month by a student film”) because it feels so much like a classic Hayao Miyazaki animated film. Titled Celles et Ceux des Cimes et Cieux, which translates to Girls and Guys from Summits and Skies, this stunning Vimeo video plays like a trailer for this film about a boy who lives in a village on a giant tree. It was made by Gwenn Germain as a project for the French art school Créapole. If anything, it’s just an impressive concept. ›››

    Batkid Begins Documentary

“Gotham City needs you, Batkid!” Warner Bros has debuted the official trailer for Batkid Begins: The Wish Heard Around the World, the documentary following the story of “Batkid” and his amazing day in San Francisco. Almost everyone remembers this, when the entire city came together and everyone dressed up so that he could play Batkid and save the town, and it’s such a heartwarming story. The documentary looks at the “why” of the event, how it all came together, why so many people came out to support him, and how it turned into an event the entire world watched. The film earned positive reviews playing at Slamdance and we expect it to make many other people smile once it hits theaters this June. Don’t miss it! Take a look. ›››

  • Full US Trailer for Aardman Animations' 'Shaun the Sheep Movie'

Full US Trailer for Aardman Animations' 'Shaun the Sheep Movie'

    Shaun the Sheep Movie Trailer

“If they can’t blend in, they could end up back in the pen.” A full-length US trailer has debuted for Aardman Animations’ Shaun the Sheep Movie, their latest stop-motion adventure following Wallace & Gromit and Flushed Away. This amusing stop-motion story follows a sheep named Shaun who decides to take the day off and have some fun, but gets a little more than he bargained for, ending up in the big city to find his family. As much as it may sound like something a bit cheesy, I trust in Aardman and from what I can tell this might be a lot of fun. The fluffy lil’ handmade sheep are so cute! After the first two teasers, cue this up. ›››
