One of my Top 10 favorite films of 2014 was Whiplash, the electric and intense first feature from young filmmaker Damien Chazelle. The film ended up getting five Oscar nominations, with three wins including actor J.K. Simmons for his performance as R.J. Fletcher. It’s no surprise that the actor and director are reteaming for another film. THR reports that Simmons has signed on to star again in La La Land, the new film from Damien Chazelle. Already set to star are Ryan Gosling and Emma Stone. La La Land is a modern Hollywood musical that follows a jazz pianist who falls for an aspiring actress, but they run into troubles. ›››

We can’t exactly say “it’s official” until Warner Bros sends out the press release, but this is about as close as we’ll get until then. Deadline is reporting that the rumor first reported by Latino Review a few weeks ago is actually true. Ben Affleck will be co-writing and directing the solo spin-off Batman movie following his appearance in Zack Snyder’s Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice coming out next year. He’ll be teaming up with DC’s Geoff Johns, writer of Batman: Earth One, to write the script for this before he directs. Well I’ll be damned, this doesn’t so bad at all. “They are likely to turn in a script before the end of the summer.” ›››

They believe everything they’re hearing and seeing… I like to shake that up.” If you’re a longtime reader of this blog, you already know that I am outspoken fan of filmmaker Christopher Nolan. I think he’s one of the best filmmakers working today, and his movies are incomparable in their grandeur and intelligent design. Not everyone agrees, but we all have our own opinions of course. Criticisms aside, Nolan has made some very intelligent, very bold films – including Memento and The Prestige. He has a style and storytelling technique that is refined and sleek, yet still cinematic and engaging. You can do it, Duncan! Legendary’s big new Warcraft movie is currently scheduled for release in June of 2016, meaning there’s still 11 more months until it’s fully finished and playing in theaters. However, director Duncan Jones is already eyeing something to fill his time for those next 11 months – possibly making his passion project sci-fi film Mute. During an interview with Duncan at Comic-Con, Empire heard from the Warcraft director that he’s hoping to make it happen. “It’s 11 months to sneak in my little indie sci-fi before Warcraft comes out… I got Moon done in 11 months.” Well, here’s hoping all the pieces are falling in place. ›››

Another day, another remake. They’re currently remaking Ben-Hur, so why not remake almost everything else? AMBI Group out of Italy has announced plans to remake Federico Fellini’s Oscar winning 1960 classic La Dolce Vita. The project will be financed & produced by AMBI with Italian producer Daniele Di Lorenzo through his production company LDM Productions. It’s already being described as an “homage” remake to the original Fellini film, which starred Marcello Mastroianni and Anita Ekberg. Either this news will cause you to flip over a table in rage, or leave you numb, since remakes are only getting more and more plentiful. ›››

“I met somebody… An Italian fella. We’re going to Coney Island on the weekend.” This looks charming. Fox Searchlight has debuted the first trailer for John Crowley’s Brooklyn, starring Saoirse Ronan, a vintage romance set in New York City in the 1950s. The cast includes Domhnall Gleeson, Michael Zegen and Emory Cohen, but this is really Ronan’s show. As a young Irish immigrant, she struggles to find her place in America, but then falls into a relationship with an Italian boy. This trailer really builds into magnificence at the end, with a lovely score and some fantastic shots of the city. But it’s the shots of Saoirse Ronan pining, and crying, and longing, that will really hit you deep in the heart. First premiered at Sundance in January. ›››

It is my tradition to kick off Comic-Con by walking the showfloor on preview night and taking photos of anything movie-related that interests me. This year the showfloor is overrun with Star Wars everywhere, for obvious reasons considering we have The Force Awakens coming up. There were also some discoveries like The Iron Giant at WB and plenty of other props or maquettes or models. I made my way through the crowds and snapped as many shots as I could before getting out, but there will certainly be more to come at the end (as I always try to go back). Last week we featured a new set of character posters from Crimson Peak, now we have even more gorgeous dark red artwork to get you in the mood for the new original horror from Guillermo del Toro. Unite! With Comic-Con 2015 underway this week, Lionsgate has launched another massive marketing blitz for The Hunger Games: Mockingjay – Part 2. We’ve been warning you that they were going to go all out with this, and they continue to keep pushing out marketing in all forms. We expect a full trailer to hit this week during the big Hall H panel at Comic-Con, but in the meantime they’ve released another kick ass new poster, another viral video, and TheCapitol.pn website has been takeover. I’m not sure if this is going to convert anyone who isn’t already a fan into a fan, but it’s cool to see. I’m glad they’re going all out, might as well for this big of a finale. Though this does remind me a bit of the Joker’s overture for The Dark Knight. ›››
