    Carol Trailer

“How many times have you been in love?” The Weinstein Company has debuted a new full-length trailer for Todd Haynes’ Carol, which first premiered at the Cannes Film Festival and just played at the Telluride Film Festival this past weekend. I’ve been hearing rave reviews about this ever since Cannes, and it still seems to be getting strong buzz. Rooney Mara and Cate Blanchett star in this film set in the 1950s in New York. The cast includes Sarah Paulson, Kyle Chandler, Cory Michael Smith, John Magaro and Carrie Brownstein. This is a strikingly beautiful trailer that totally sells me on this. I can’t wait to finally see it. ›››

Full-Length Trailer for Lenny Abrahamson's 'Room' with Brie Larson

    Room Trailer

“Did you ever think you would be free?” After premiering at the Venice and Telluride Film Festivals to quite a bit of buzz, A24 has debuted the new full-length trailer for Room, from the filmmaker who gave us Frank. Brie Larson stars as “Ma”, with Jacob Tremblay as her son, in a story of escape captivity that explores the boundless love between mother and child. The cast includes Joan Allen and William H. Macy. I saw the film myself at the Telluride Film Festival, and why I liked the first half, it overstayed its welcome by about 40 minutes. This trailer may seem like it’s spoiling the film, but that’s just the story in the film. Take a look. ›››

Watch: First Trailer for Michael Dougherty's New Horror 'Krampus'

    Krampus Trailer

It’s the most wonderful time of the year! Universal has debuted the first official trailer for Krampus, from Michael Dougherty, the director of Trick ‘r Treat. This time he’s bringing horror to the “most wonderful time of the year” in the form the evil Christmas monster Krampus, who comes to torment a small snowy town. The main cast includes Adam Scott, Toni Collette, Allison Tolman, David Koechner and many others. I love how much fun this looks, with the horror kicking in in the second half. I’m a huge fan of Dougherty’s Trick ‘r Treat and have been waiting for him to make another movie, and from the looks of it, this is going to be just as good. Get your first look below and put this on your schedule for December. Enjoy! ›››

Telluride 2015: 'Sherpa' is One of the Best Documentaries I've Seen

    Sherpa Documentary

I love this documentary. It’s beautifully made, with so much breathtaking and remarkable footage. Sherpa, directed by Jennifer Peedom, is a doc about the sherpas of Nepal. Most people have heard of them (the most famous being Tenzing Norgay, who was first to reach the summit of Everest with Sir Edmund Hillary), maybe seen a few photos, but they’re rarely seen in movies – even ones about climbing Everest. But in reality the sherpas do all of the work, carrying massive loads of supplies up/down the mountain while western “clients” sit in heated tents waiting for their trek upwards. This documentary about the sherpas is one of the best documentaries I have ever seen, and I genuinely mean that. It’s an exhilarating and moving experience. ›››

  • First Look: Matt Damon Back as Jason Bourne on Set of New Movie

First Look: Matt Damon Back as Jason Bourne on Set of New Movie

    Matt Damon as Jason Bourne

Bourne is back!! The real Jason Bourne, not that “I need my chems!” guy. Even though the trilogy wrapped up nicely with The Bourne Ultimatum in 2007, Matt Damon is back again and has started filming the new Bourne movie due out next summer. Producer Frank Marshall posted a photo on Twitter from the set, showing Damon in shape and looking like he’s ready to kick some ass again. While there still is no official title for this new film, Marshall included the hashtag “#Bourne2016”. The plot is being kept under wraps, but it’s good to see him back. Hopefully this will turn out good as Paul Greengrass is directing. Take a look! ›››

    James White Trailer

“So I’m just going to come right out and say this – you’re a mess.” The Film Arcade has debuted the official trailer for James White, a film that premiered at Sundance this year to some raves from a few of my critic friends. From the same guys who made Martha Marcy May Marlene and Simon Killer previously, this directing debut of Josh Mond tells a story about a New Yorker “that explores loss and the deep relationship between a mother and son”. Co-starring Cynthia Nixon, Scott “Kid Cudi” Mescudi, Ron Livingston and Makenzie Leigh. This starts out a bit odd, but the end of the trailer actually makes this worth seeing. ›››

  • Telluride 2015: Charlie Kaufman's Stop-Motion Romance 'Anomalisa'

    Telluride 2015: Charlie Kaufman's Stop-Motion Romance 'Anomalisa'

    Anomalisa

I’m still not sure what to make of it. Anomalisa is a stop-motion animated film co-directed by the genius Charlie Kaufman and animator Duke Johnson. It’s sort of Kaufman’s attempt at romance, following a depressed main character tired of the mundanity of life around him, delving head first into the theme of identity. Along the way he meets a woman that, for reasons he can’t really explain, he’s attracted to. She’s unique, different than everyone else, there’s just something about her. I’m unsure if Anomalisa is simply brilliant, or brilliantly simple, in showing the importance of the connections we make with other people. ›››

Watch: A Behind-the-Scenes Featurette for Malick's 'Knight of Cups'

    Knight of Cups Featurette

“Once there was a young prince whose father, the king of the East, sent him down into Egypt to find a pearl…” Malick! While we wait for the upcoming theatrical release of (one of) Terrence Malick’s new films, Knight of Cups, a mesmerizing new behind-the-scenes featurette has debuted. With some glimpses of the actual filming, as well as scenes and clips of interviews, this featurette reminds us all why we should still be paying attention to Malick. Christian Bale stars with Natalie Portman, Teresa Palmer, Wes Bentley and Isabel Lucas. I saw the film at the Berlin Film Festival this year, and after watching this, it really hit me in the gut how much I loved this film and can’t wait to see it again. Dive deep into Malick’s mind below. ›››

  • Telluride 2015: Sorkin & Boyle's 'Steve Jobs' Film is One for the Ages

Telluride 2015: Sorkin & Boyle's 'Steve Jobs' Film is One for the Ages

    Steve Jobs

This isn’t the story of “tech innovator” Steve Jobs that we all know already. It’s something else entirely, an incredibly unique and brilliant creation that encapsulates decades of true stories and distills them down into one glorious three-act performance. An opera, or a Shakespearean play. And it’s a phenomenal performance, one for the ages. It’s a performance filled with an incredible ensemble, not a weak link anywhere, and some of the best dialogue and discussion you’ll ever hear. Thanks to Aaron Sorkin, one the finest screenwriters today, who crafts a beautiful script with so much depth in every single sentence. It’s almost overwhelming how much there is going on in every exchange, but it is so delightful to experience. This is one for the ages. ›››
