Telluride 2015: Tom McCarthy's 'Spotlight' is a Riveting Investigation

    Spotlight Review

Whether all of modern society has accepted it yet or not, we are living in the age of whistleblowers, lead by the likes of Julian Assange and Edward Snowden. Tom McCarthy’s new film Spotlight is another great reminder of the power of people who speak out, who speak up, when everyone else won’t. The film profiles the Boston Globe’s intensive investigation into systemic rape in the Catholic Church, which they uncovered and confirmed through multiple sources, and published in multiple shocking articles throughout 2002. The film starts slow, but builds to immensity throughout the investigation, resulting in a riveting look at the power of hard-working journalists who won’t let a story go no matter how much resistance they receive. ›››

  • The First Order on New Banners for 'Star Wars: The Force Awakens'

The First Order on New Banners for 'Star Wars: The Force Awakens'

    Star Wars: The Force Awakens

It’s Star Wars mania! Today is “Force Friday” and Lucasfilm has announced/launched toys and goodies and tons of new items for the fans to go crazy over. Found amidst all the buzz and reveals are three new promo banners for Star Wars: The Force Awakens – full-size “quads” (like from the UK), rather than actual posters. Which makes me believe these may just be promo banners or purchasable posters more than official art (plus, there has to be more coming from Drew Struzan). That said, it’s very cool to see more imagery. The First Order stormtroopers, a sleek shot of Kylo Ren, and a nice combination of everything in the movie. ›››

  • Watch: Full-Length Trailer for Cary Fukunaga's 'Beasts of No Nation'

Watch: Full-Length Trailer for Cary Fukunaga's 'Beasts of No Nation'

    Beasts of No Nation

“I will always protect you because you are my son…” Netflix is ready to rumble. The digital distributor has debuted a new trailer for Cary Fukunaga’s Beasts of No Nation, their first ever original feature film release. The film is premiering at the Venice and Telluride Film Festivals this week, so be on the lookout for early reviews and feedback. In the meantime, this full-length trailer gets into the very intense story about a boy named Agu, played by newcomer Abraham Attah, who gets recruited into a unit of guerilla fighters led by Idris Elba. Early word is that this is a very visceral, powerful thriller that really delves into the mind of what makes these kids into fighters. I’m looking forward to seeing this, with plans to catch it in Telluride. ›››

  • New Poster for Sam Mendes' 'Spectre' Inspired by Bond Art of Past

New Poster for Sam Mendes' 'Spectre' Inspired by Bond Art of Past

    Spectre Poster

Live and Let Spectre. Eon Production has unveiled the latest official poster for Sam Mendes’ Spectre, the latest James Bond, and the fourth Bond starring Daniel Craig as Agent 007. This time, Craig puts on a very daper white tuxedo standing with his pistol at the ready, in a classic James Bond pose front and center. To give this shot some context, they toss in that creepy skeleton guy in the background. My first thought is Live and Let Die, which is most likely the nostalgic connection they’re going for. The result is a very eye-catching, appealing poster. And I can’t wait to see the movie, too. I love the way they’ve been marketing this so far. ›››

Watch: First Trailer for Yorgos Lanthimos' Funky Film 'The Lobster'

    The Lobster Trailer

“It’s no coincidence the targets are shaped like single people, and not couples.” The first official trailer has debuted for Greek filmmaker Yorgos Lanthimos’ new film The Lobster. Set in the “dystopian near future”, this comedy is an “offbeat dating satire” featuring Colin Farrell, Rachel Weisz, John C. Reilly, Léa Seydoux, and Ben Whishaw. This earned some rave reviews out of Cannes this year but as always, you have to expect some funky twists and weird choices from Yorgos Lanthimos. Thankfully this is a suitably wacky first tease for Lanthimos’ first English-language film, and I like what little glimpses we do get to see. ›››

Check Out This Fantastic Poster for Jeremy Saulnier's 'Green Room'

    Green Room

Nobody leaves. This poster rules! Thanks to a tip from our good friends @TheFilmStage, a new poster has debuted for Jeremy Saulnier’s film Green Room. Saulnier is the filmmaker who brought us the breakout indie revenge thriller Blue Ruin, and this is his latest feature. It’s about a young punk rock band, comprised of Anton Yelchin and Imogen Poots (seen above), who find themselves trapped in a secluded venue after stumbling upon some skinheads. The film is apparently extremely violent, but earned rave reviews at its Cannes premiere. Saulnier also got an upgrade on the cast – Patrick Stewart, Alia Shawkat, Mark Webber are all in this, too. That’s probably why this isn’t being pushed as a main poster, but damn is it still a fine poster. ›››

It's Time for Cinema – The Fall Festival Season Kicks Off This Week

    Telluride Film Festival

It’s time. Time to kick off the fall movie season. We’re just about done with summer, the kids are back in school, and most importantly – the fall film festivals are about to kick off. The Venice Film Festival and Telluride Film Festival both open this week, with many big (and surprise) premieres planned. Right after that, the festival season continues with the Toronto International Film Festival and Fantastic Fest in Austin, leading to the New York Film Festival and AFI Fest in Los Angeles, not to mention the London Film Festival. That takes us right into the awards season of November/December. Whether you like it or not, or you hate the awards grind and endless campaigning, this is the time of year when all the good films roll out – last year’s gems, surprising discoveries, more films to fall in love with. I’m ready to start watching. ›››

  • Will Ferrell & Mark Wahlberg in Trailer for 'Daddy's Home' Comedy

Will Ferrell & Mark Wahlberg in Trailer for 'Daddy's Home' Comedy

    Daddy's Home Trailer

If you’re interested, Paramount has debuted a trailer for Daddy’s Home, a comedy starring Will Ferrell as a new step dad married to Linda Cardellini, and Mark Wahlberg as the “real father”. The other day while updating our Release Schedule, I noticed this film was listed for Christmas Day, but there’s not much talk about it. Well, here is the trailer, and you’ll know why there’s not much to say. It looks really bad. Plus, I don’t know about everyone else, but this Christmas I’m planning to see Star Wars: The Force Awakens a few more times. If not Tarantino’s The Hateful Eight. Anyway, if you’re curious to see what Daddy’s Home is all about – here you go. Featuring Thomas Haden Church, Paul Scheer and Alessandra Ambrosio. Enjoy. ›››

  • Watch: Official US Trailer for 'Partisan' Featuring Vincent Cassel

Watch: Official US Trailer for 'Partisan' Featuring Vincent Cassel

Partisan - Vincent Cassel - Trailer

“Rules are important. And without rules, we will become like them.” Well Go USA has debuted the official trailer for Partisan, a thriller out of Sundance this year starring Vincent Cassel in one of the lead roles. I actually heard a lot great things about this during the fest from some of my friends, and you can see why with this trailer. Cassel plays a man who raises kids in some kind of colony where he trains them to survive and to kill. The film follows Jeremy Chabriel as Alexander, a boy who begins to think for himself; it also stars Florence Mezzara. This is a hard one to pitch simply in text without inviting you to see footage, but luckily we can do just that. Take a look below, I think a few folks might be very intrigued by this film. Enjoy. ›››

  • Josh Gad Confirmed to Play Roger Ebert in STX's 'Russ & Roger' Film

Josh Gad Confirmed to Play Roger Ebert in STX's 'Russ & Roger' Film

    Roger Ebert

It’s official. Hollywood Reporter is announcing that actor Josh Gad has signed on to play the late film critic Roger Ebert in the project Russ & Roger. We first reported on this earlier in the year, and are following up with the confirmation. STX Entertainment is developing the comedy focused around the film critic and filmmaker Russ Meyer, to be played by Will Ferrell. Michael Winterbottom will be directing, from a script by Chris Cluess. THR doesn’t mention a start date, but this is the kind of news that means it’s happening sooner than later. Gad has been making quite a name for himself recently (he’s in Pixels, Wish I Was Here, The Wedding Ringer and the upcoming Beauty and the Beast) and this sounds like a nice score. Read on. ›››
