More sequels – oh no! Disney and Pixar have confirmed and announced release dates through 2019 for their upcoming slate of animated movies. The studio headed to social media to post an image showing the early teaser posters for all of the upcoming movies, along with release dates for each one. The Good Dinosaur hits theaters this year, followed by Finding Dory arriving June 17th, 2016 next summer. From there it’s Cars 3 arriving June 16th, 2017 then their original Day of the Dead movie Coco opening on November 22nd, 2017. Then Toy Story 4 hits on June 15th, 2018 before The Incredibles 2 arrives June 21st, 2019. ›››

Even though it may seem like there’s barely any visual effects or any CG patching in a dramatic real-world thriller like Sicario, the truth is that there’s a great amount of work that goes into finishing a film like this. Denis Villeneuve’s Sicario, starring Emily Blunt as a young FBI agent who gets a taste of the Mexican drug wars, is one of my favorite films this year. This breakdown and VFX reel from Oblique FX shows some of the sequences they worked on, and as always it’s very fascinating to see. Realizing just how much is added with visual effects is impressive, and it’s always interesting to see how much they did shoot with bluescreen. ›››

Ready for Phase 3? Marvel has officially announced a few minor details about its plans for Phase 3, coming up beginning in 2018. First off, the studio has confirmed via Marvel.com that they are planning an Ant-Man sequel and it will be titled Ant-Man and the Wasp. “The sequel will mark the first Marvel Studios film named after its heroine.” Both Scott Lang and Hope Van Dyne will return in that sequel, scheduled for July 6th, 2018. With this announcement, the two other Marvel movies scheduled for 2018 have been moved up in the year – Black Panther arrives on February 16th, 2018 and Captain Marvel will open on March 8th, 2019. It sounds like those two movies are fully confirmed, too. I’m sure we’ll be hearing more news soon. ›››

Let’s build a better tomorrow. Today. Well, this is getting interesting. The 2015 New York Comic-Con opens today in New York City, and LexCorp is making its mark. The company has announced that they are providing free wi-fi during the convention, and also distributing free “portable charging devices” (or mini batteries to charge your phone). This also ties in with the launch of a new website for LexCorp to tie-in with the movie and all this branding. Just a few days ago, Fortune magazine published a profile on LexCorp’s Lex Luthor, played by Jesse Eisenberg in Zack Snyder’s Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice, and this is the continuation of that LexCorp viral marketing connecting into the real world. “It’s up to us to protect our home… Sometimes you gotta face your fear to get to the other side.” A few days ago, we featured the new theatrical trailer for Pixar’s The Good Dinosaur, and now we have another one with even more footage. This trailer is the Australian version and features lots of new footage in the first half, presenting the entire story with the correct narrative in the film – starting with his family, then his adventure after the storm, meeting Spot, and eventually the T-Rexes. It’s essentially a story about a boy and his dog, except the “dog” in this case is the human, and Arlo the apatosaurus is the “boy”. It looks fantastic. ›››

Anyone who needs to brush up on their Edgar Allen Poe should take a look at this film when it hits theaters. Extraordinary Tales is an animated anthology horror film telling five Edgar Allen Poe stories each by a different animator and with a different narrator. I wasn’t expecting that all of the animation would look this good, but it does look good, and it’s interesting to see all the unique styles used in the different stories. The outstanding set of narrators includes Sir Christopher Lee, Bela Lugosi, Julian Sands, Roger Corman and Guillermo del Toro. I’m curious to check this out, it looks like it might be fun to watch around Halloween. ›››

“I’m sorry that you have to grow up in this place. Alone.” We haven’t featured a sci-fi short film in a while, so here’s something to feast your eyes on. SUMER is a 3D animated futuristic short set on a desolate Earth. It’s directed by Alvaro García, who has worked in the VFX industry in London for a while. There are a few really nice moments and unique creations in this, though it definitely has a Tron Legacy vibe in the second half but that might just be because of the music. I like where it all leads to at the end, at least there’s some hope out there. SUMER played at over 50 festivals, including the Cleveland Film Festival and the Newport Beach Film Festival, picking up awards at a few of them. Watch below, and don’t be too harsh on it. Meet the next, new Disney princess – Moana! Yes, that’s how they’re billing her already as revealed in People today, with a first look at the character as animated in the Moana movie and an introduction to the young 14-year-old Hawaiian actress voicing her – Auli’i Cravalho. This is Disney’s 56th animated feature film, being directed by renowned filmmakers Ron Clements and John Musker (The Little Mermaid, Aladdin), coming to theaters late in 2016. This is the big reveal about the actress voicing the character, and they even include a video of her being told she’s getting the gig. That world soothes the spirit of those who are disheartened and exhausted from dealing with the sharp edges of reality.” Time for another stunning look at the work of Hayao Miyazaki in a 16-minute tribute video about “The Essence of Humanity” in his films. Made by Lewis Bond, the same guy behind Channel Criswell who also made the Colour in Storytelling video, it’s an extensive look at Miyazaki’s focus on the emotional intricacies of his subjects, and storytelling in his films. He even explores some of his history, referencing how the Russian animated film The Snow Queen (1957) first showed the potential of human emotion in animation. This is a good one – take a watch. ›››

A global (sci-fi) costume design contest has just launched online for Luc Besson’s upcoming sci-fi project Valerian, which is titled in full: Valerian and The City of A Thousand Planets. This is his very big, very epic return to space opera science fiction, and he needs help designing futuristic costumes for a cocktail party scene in the movie.
