“After so many years of chasing a fairy tale, most people would be ready to give up…” Gravitas Ventures has debuted a trailer for Aaron & Adam Nee’s Band of Robbers, a zany comedy about Tom Sawyer and Huckleberry Finn all grown up, wreaking havoc and getting into all kinds of shenanigans after getting out of prison. Kyle Gallner stars as Huck Finn, and Adam Nee as Tom Sawyer, with a cast including Matthew Gray Gubler, Hannibal Buress, Melissa Benoist, Stephen Lang and Eric Christian Olsen. Get your first look at the new Jeff Nichols film before we even get a first look at the other new Jeff Nichols film! Jeff Nichols, director of the fantastic films Take Shelter, Mud and Shotgun Stories, finished a sci-fi film for Warner Bros called Midnight Special. They pushed it back to next March, so in the meantime, Nichols went on to shoot his next film. He’s now in production in Virginia on Loving, a drama inspired by Nancy Buirski’s 2011 documentary The Loving Story about an interracial couple jailed for marrying in 1958. The two starring as that couple are Joel Edgerton as Richard, and Ruth Negga as Mildred Loving. ›››

“Two brothers walked a single trail…” It’s time to get in the Halloween mood with a horror short film. This one is titled The Storybook Killer directed by Andrew Vallentine, and it just premiered online thanks to Amplify and YouTube star Ricky Dillon, who stars in the short film as one of the main characters. The horror short is about a group of friends who go looking for a long lost brother at a nearby theme park, only to end up being killed one-by-one. The dialogue is a bit cheesy, but this is an effective and interesting horror short with some fun kills. The cast includes Ashley Argota, Meg DeAngelis, Josh Leyva, and Cody Saintgnue. ›››

Meet everybody’s favorite psycho killer, again. A photo of the newest Empire magazine cover has appeared online, and it’s a very colorful, very fun shot of Jared Leto playing The Joker in the upcoming movie Suicide Squad. We’ve already seen that kick ass Comic-Con teaser trailer and the original Joker reveal photo, so it’s nothing completely new, but it is cool to see more of him full-size like this. Plus, I dig the crazy wacky colorful design of the Empire cover. We still have yet to see the rest of the cast like this – Margot Robbie, Cara Delevingne, Will Smith, Jai Courtney, Joel Kinnaman, Adewale Akinnuoye-Agbaje. Hopefully this is a good sign that a full theatrical trailer will be arriving sooner than we know it. Stay tuned for more. ›››

The big, goofy WWII comedy is about a ragtag group of Home Guard local defense volunteers at Walmington-on-Sea who get into some mischievous trouble when word is there is a spy on the lose. The cast includes Bill Nighy, Toby Jones, Catherine Zeta-Jones, Tom Courtenay, Michael Gambon, Blake Harrison, Daniel Mays and Bill Paterson. This kind of humor won’t exactly play well with everyone, but surprisingly it looks quite funny, so give it a chance why don’tcha. Maybe you’ll find yourself laughing. ›››

“I’m not so sure you want to be me.” It was an opportunity I couldn’t pass – the chance to interview Jason Segel. He stars as the late author David Foster Wallace in one of my favorite films this year, The End of the Tour directed by James Ponsoldt. The film is about the actual end of his (book) tour, specifically the time David Foster Wallace spends with fellow writer/journalist David Lipsky, played in the film by Jesse Eisenberg. The two meet in winter and discuss all kinds of topics, and it’s really a beautiful film about life and honesty, and still being real even though you may be brilliant, as with DFW. Segel gives a phenomenal, Oscar-worthy performance as David Foster Wallace – and I don’t bat an eye saying that. I had to meet him. ›››

Holy crap this poster! My goodness. 20th Century Fox has unveiled the poster art for Alejandro González Iñárritu’s The Revenant, one of our most anticipated films left to see this fall. So far the marketing for this has been perfect – the two incredible trailers we’ve seen have been breathtaking, all the imagery they’ve released looks amazing. Now we have a gorgeous poster to top it off. I’m glad that Fox’s marketing team is as enthusiastic as I am about this film, because this is all making me even more excited. It’s also refreshingly bold that neither Leonardo DiCaprio or Tom Hardy or any of the cast are on the poster, but that doesn’t make it any less stunning. Very impressive for a studio movie, we rarely get posters this good. Take a look. ›››

He’s back! This is the year Michael Moore returns with a new documentary, titled Where to Invade Next, another look at some of America’s problems. The doc just premiered at the Toronto and New York Film Festivals, receiving rave reviews from critics the world over. We also announced last month that a brand new indie distributor will be releasing the doc. Tom Quinn, Jason Janego and Tim League announced today that they will be releasing Michael Moore’s new “comedy” Where To Invade Next in New York and Los Angeles starting on December 23rd‪, followed by a nationwide opening on January 15th via their “new, clandestine and as-yet-unnamed distribution label”.
