    The World of Kanako Trailer

“Where did you hide Kanako?” Drafthouse Films recently put out a funky full theatrical trailer for Tetsuya Nakashima’s The World of Kanako, the crazy bloody, high-energy Japanese action thriller described as a “non-stop visual and emotional assault to the senses”. Nana Komatsu stars as Kanako Fujishima, the daughter of an ex-detective named Akikazu, played by Kôji Yakusho. She goes missing and he goes after her, ending up in some twisted, trippy violent (under)world. I really like the music choice in this, something unique and fresh, and it goes a long way to make us ignore the extreme violence we’re otherwise witnessing. If you’re into ultra violent Japanese thrillers about a father looking for his missing daughter, here you go. ›››

    Movie Poster Scenes

Movie posters always end up becoming the iconic image for the movie, used to promote it and seen on the walls and at ticket stands in movie theaters everywhere. Some of the time a poster will be custom made, or photographed just for marketing, but other times it can be made using a scene from a movie – an actual still or a scene that inspires a design. This short video by Candice Drouet takes a look at a big batch of movie posters and the scenes they’re inspired by. The framing is a bit funky, because sometimes I just want to see the scene more than the poster, but it’s still a good juxtaposition to see the exact moment in the film. Enjoy! ›››

  • Official US Trailer for 'The Lady in the Van' Starring Maggie Smith

Official US Trailer for 'The Lady in the Van' Starring Maggie Smith

    The Lady in the Van

“I am here, she is there. There is no caring.” Sony Pictures Classics has debuted the official US trailer for Maggie Smith’s awards season contender The Lady in the Van, which will be getting a small Academy-qualifying release starting in December. In the film, actress Maggie Smith reprises her role as “the lady in the van” from the stage show of the same name, a character she has played for over a decade now. She is joined by Alex Jennings as Alan Bennett, with appearances by Dominic Cooper, James Corden, Jim Broadbent, Frances de la Tour and others. It’s a charming, life-affirming story of a woman who prefers to live in her van than any permanent home. Is it just me, or did they use some music from Miyazaki films? ›››

First Trailer for 'Dirty Grandpa' Starring Zac Efron & Robert De Niro

    Dirty Grandpa Trailer

“The way I see it – this is our last stand.” Lionsgate has debuted the trailer for Dirty Grandpa, about an uptight kid played by Zac Efron who has to drive his lewd, perverted former-Army-general grandfather, played by Robert De Niro, to spring break in Florida. Ohhhh man this is one hell of a raunchy film, and not in a good way. At least they admit that De Niro’s character is a “pervert”, because damn is he an asshole. The cast includes Julianne Hough, Aubrey Plaza, Dermot Mulroney, Zoey Deutch, Jason Mantzoukas, Adam Pally and Henry Zebrowski. I recommend staying as far away from this film as possible, it’s just not worth it. ›››

One More Epic Finale TV Spot for 'Hunger Games: Mockingjay – Part 2'

The Hunger Games: Mockingjay - Part 2 - Epic Finale TV Spot

“You’ve given them an opportunity – people want to fight!” With only a few more weeks left to go, Lionsgate has unleashed an “epic finale” TV spot for Francis Lawrence’s The Hunger Games: Mockingjay – Part 2. This first aired during the World Series on TV and is now online for your viewing. Mockingjay – Part 2 is the all-out grand finale for this series, starring Jennifer Lawrence as Katniss Everdeen, the girl who lead the revolution to overthrow the Capitol. This really does look epic, with more action and even sci-fi elements popping up all over. I really, truly hope we see her bring down the Capitol in an all out war, because that’s what this has all be leading towards, and that’s what I want to see. It’s time to finally put an end to Snow. ›››

Watch: Vincent Piazza in Crime Story 'The Wannabe' Official Trailer

    The Wannabe Trailer

“Now one told you to go rob the Blockbuster, you were on your own.” Entertainment One has unveiled an official trailer for Nick Sandow’s The Wannabe, starring Vincent Piazza as Thomas, a kid who set out to fix the 1992 trial of John Gotti. It’s essentially a wacky little story about a kid who wants to be a part of the mob glory involving Gotti, and devises a crazy, bold plan to get himself in the center of everything. Patricia Arquette co-stars, Martin Scorsese executive produces; the cast includes Domenick Lombardozzi, Michael Imperioli, Doug E. Doug, Nick Sandow, Vincenzo Amato, and Joseph Siravo as John Gotti. This honestly doesn’t look that memorable, but if you’re into mob films maybe you should take a look. ›››

  • M. Night Shyamalan's Next Film 'Split' with McAvoy Opens Early 2017

    M. Night Shyamalan's Next Film 'Split' with McAvoy Opens Early 2017

    M. Night Shyamalan

Briefly: Shyamalan’s new thriller has a date for early 2017. Over at The Wrap, they report that Universal Pictures and Blumhouse Productions have set a release for M. Night Shyamalan’s Split on January 20th, 2017. Split is written and directed by Shyamalan, following up his return to low budget films The Visit this year, and is supposedly a “suspense thriller with elements of the supernatural”. Other than that, there’s no plot info available. The cast includes James McAvoy, Anya Taylor-Joy, Betty Buckley, Jessica Sula and Haley Lu Richardson. There’s already a lot of other weird horror scheduled for January 2017 between the delayed Friday the 13th reboot, Resident Evil: The Final Chapter, plus Power Rangers and The Dark Tower movie. I’m curious what exactly Shyamalan’s Split means – maybe split personality? McAvoy would be a great pick. ›››

    Crying in a Sweater Trailer

“Sometimes I think it would be better if we just couldn’t feel…” Are you ready for this? Can you handle another emotional drama about the hardships of life? Jimmy Kimmel has debuted the trailer for Crying in a Sweater, a new indie film starring Kristen Wiig. This “extremely independent” films is already earning Oscar buzz, all for the emotionally devastating and totally reborn performance by the remarkably talented Kristen Wiig. No, but really, this is a funny joke trailer that does a good job of showing just how goofy the awards season can be. And we’ve only begun. I’m not sure why they chose Michael Bay to direct it, though? ›››

Adam Sandler in First Trailer for Netflix's Comedy 'The Ridiculous Six'

    The Ridiculous Six

“Who are you people?!” “We are the Stockburn Brothers!” Netflix has debuted the first trailer for the new comedy from Frank Coraci and Adam Sandler titled The Ridiculous Six. It’s a western starring Adam Sandler as Tommy “White Knife” Stockburn who goes on a wild west adventure with his five brothers. The impressive comedic cast includes Steve Buscemi, Taylor Lautner, Terry Crews, Norm MacDonald, Danny Trejo, Will Forte, Nick Nolte, Rob Schneider, Luke Wilson, Steve Zahn and David Spade. If the cheesy lines don’t sell you, maybe that cast will. This really does not look good at all, but maybe that’s just my sense of humor, or… it’s way too overdone. Not a moment of this made me laugh. It just looks ridiculous. Have fun! ›››

Help Support Carlos Baena's Animated Horror Short Film 'La Noria'

    La Noria Short Film

“Darkness isn’t always what it seems.” Animator Carlos Baena, who has worked at Pixar and ILM, is now working on his own solo projects and one of them coming up is called La Noria. Thanks to SlashFilm for the tip. La Noria is an animated horror film that is a bit different. “Given the dark nature of the story as well as the psychological backstory of the main character, La Noria has a quality that is very different from most animated films.” They’ve launched an Indiegogo page to collect $50,000 to fund the animated project and have also released a teaser trailer along with the pitch video. It looks great – the animation is impressive, and I’m curious to find out more about the creature that’s haunting him. Give this indie horror film a look. ›››
