He’s not like us. What does it all mean? Earlier this week Entertainment Weekly debuted the first official photo from the film Midnight Special, the family-friend science fiction movie from writer/director Jeff Nichols (of Take Shelter, Mud and Shotgun Stories). This is the film that was pushed back after Warner Bros wanted to tweak it a bit, and now it’s getting ready for release March next year. The first photo shows the boy’s mother & father, played by Michael Shannon & Kirsten Dunst, with Alton, played by Jaeden Lieberher, as well as Joel Edgerton. The poster gives us a better hint at what’s to come, but still vague. ›››

The strained marriage of an artistic couple is at the heart of By the Sea, the new directorial effort from Angelina Jolie Pitt. She and husband Brad Pitt star as the unhappy pair and while most will be quick to prejudge and deem this a vanity project the movie while not perfect is much deeper than its superficial exterior. By the Sea is a deliberate departure for the Hollywood power couple, the kind of movie that was commonplace in the 70s but can only be made now with the influence of these two megastars. Everything from the immaculate cinematography by Christian Berger (The White Ribbon) to the lush score by legendary composer Gabriel Yared (The Talented Mr. Ripley) evokes a forgotten era of filmmaking. An era Jolie Pitt is obviously very familiar with and despite a few bumps in the road manages to create in her own unique style. ›››

For the Horde! Take another look at this upcoming video game adaptation from director Duncan Jones. Legendary has released the first international TV spot for the epic Warcraft movie, which is promoting a full international trailer debut. There are a few bits and pieces of new footage in this compared to the full trailer which hit last week. This movie is finally being revealed to the public in a very big way after they’ve been quietly working on it for over a year, and reactions seem mixed so far. Warcraft stars Ben Foster, Travis Fimmel, Paula Patton, Toby Kebbell, Rob Kazinsky, Dominic Cooper, Daniel Wu and Clancy Brown. Evil takes many forms. A goat, a crow, what’s next? A24 has unveiled a creepy new teaser poster for Robert Eggers’ The Witch, a Colonial-period horror that premiered at Sundance about a family haunted by an evil witch. We featured the first trailer for this film a few months ago, and then Jeremy followed up with glowing review after seeing it at Fantastic Fest. In addition to this new poster debuted on Friday the 13th, an official website has launched for those curious about this evil horror feature. “Nothing will stand in our way. I’ll show them the Dark Side.” One more TV spot with some fresh footage for those who are still watching. Lucasfilm debuted this TV spot for Star Wars: The Force Awakens, directed by J.J. Abrams, during primtetime last night featuring a few bits of footage. More than anything this focuses on the friendship that we’ll see grow between Rey, played by Daisy Ridley, and Finn, played by John Boyega. There’s also an awesome moment where Han hands Rey a lightsaber, and that’s not revealing much beyond hinting where this story might be going. I also love the flute theme at the beginning of this spot, so lovely. I get chills the more we see! Only a few more weeks to go until The Force reawakens. ›››

The legend continues this January… Well Go USA has debuted the first US teaser trailer for Ip Man 3, the latest sequel in the Ip Man martial arts series starring Donnie Yen (appearing in the upcoming Rogue One: A Star Wars Story and Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon 2) as the martial arts grandmaster Yip Man, who taught Bruce Lee. This time he comes face to face, literally, with “Iron” Mike Tyson for a fight. There isn’t any dialogue in this teaser, but there is a whole crapload of kick ass action teases. The cast includes Patrick Tam, Lynn Hung, Kent Cheng and Kwok-Kwan Chan. This is worth a watch just to get a glimpse at some of the amazing martial arts action in this! Meet the Gods of Egypt! Summit Entertainment has unveiled a set of character posters for Alex Proyas’ next movie, title Gods of Egypt, an adventure epic about a common thief who joins a mythical god on a quest through Egypt. The posters feature: Gerard Butler as Set, God of the Desert; Brenton Thwaites as Bek, Thief of Legend; Chadwick Boseman as Thoth, God of Wisdom; Elodie Yung as Hathor, Goddess of Love; and Nikolaj Coster-Waldau as Horus, God of the Sky. There’s a few others missing from the cast list, but I’m sure more will be revealed eventually. These are such gloriously epic, colorful, eye-catching posters that we can probably expect the same spectacle whenever the footage is unveiled in the first trailer. ›››

“I think he has a great quality of being able to be outraged by something without losing his sense of humor about it.” Paramount has unveiled a short new featurette for The Big Short, the out-of-nowhere banking comedy that features a helluva cast. Adam McKay (of Anchorman 1 & 2, Step Brothers) directs Christian Bale, Steve Carell, Ryan Gosling, Karen Gillan, Marisa Tomei, Melissa Leo, Rafe Spall and Brad Pitt in this comedy about a group of bankers that try to plan their way around the recession in 2008. The first trailer hit a few months ago and it looks promising, like there might be something to it. This new featurette mostly focuses on director Adam McKay and his vision for this movie, and his passion for comedy. Give it a watch. ›››

This looks wonderful. You have to see this! GKIDS has debuted a beautiful trailer for the Brazilian animated film The Boy and The World, a feature film that is “entirely wordless, the narrative describes a clash between poor and rich, countryside and city, indigenous and imperial, handcrafted and mechanized – and throughout the tumult, the heart and soul of the people beats on as a song.” It’s from Brazilian filmmaker Alê Abreu, and features a lot of amazing imagery from Brazil telling the story about this boy going to the city. It’s also told with music, using the pan-flute, samba, and Brazilian hip-hop. I’m not sure what to make of it until I watch the entire thing, but this has convinced me it’s worth seeing and may end up with an Oscar nomination anyway. It will arrive in US release this December, before playing wider throughout January. ›››
