Must Watch: New Trailer for Cianfrance's 'The Light Between Oceans'

    The Light Between Oceans Trailer

“She needs us! We’re not doing anything wrong…” Disney/DreamWorks have debuted another new trailer for Derek Cianfrance’s The Light Between Oceans, the latest film from Cianfrance based on the book of the same name. The film stars Michael Fassbender and Alicia Vikander as a couple living on an island off the coast of Australia that raise a young child as their own after it washes up on shore one day. The cast includes Rachel Weisz, Emily Barclay, Anthony Hayes and Leon Ford. I totally adore the first trailer for this film, sometimes just watching it on repeat randomly during the day, and this new trailer is just as wonderful. I love the music and the emotions are so strong it’s hard not to be pulled in by this. Cannot wait. ›››

  • Cannes 2016: Mohamed Diab's 'Clash' is Superb Confined Filmmaking

Cannes 2016: Mohamed Diab's 'Clash' is Superb Confined Filmmaking

    Cannes 2016 - Clash

The opening film in the Un Certain Regard section of the 2016 Cannes Film Festival is an intense, riveting feature called Clash (also known as Eshtebak in Egyptian) and it’s outstanding. Clash is set entirely inside the back of a police paddywagon in Egypt in 2013, during the second half of their revolution. It begins when two journalists are grabbed during protests, their cameras and IDs confiscated, and thrown into the back of this truck. The impressive handheld camerawork often focuses on all the action outside as much as what’s happening inside. While the entire film is confined to this one location, it feels like director Mohamed Diab is showing so much more of the Egyptian revolution, and we get to learn more as more detainees are added. ›››

Ben Affleck & Anna Kendrick Star in First Trailer for 'The Accountant'

    The Accountant Trailer

“Can our son lead a normal life?” “Define normal.” Warner Bros has debuted a trailer for the upcoming fall film The Accountant, about an accountant helping launder money for criminals. Ben Affleck stars as an accountant working at a small-town CPA, cooking up the books for some of the most dangerous criminal organizations. With the government coming after him, he takes on legitimate work and meets a young clerk, played by Anna Kendrick, who helps him uncook their books. The cast includes Jon Bernthal, Alison Wright, J.K. Simmons, John Lithgow, Jeffrey Tambor and Cynthia Addai-Robinson. This first trailer introduces “the accountant” as a gifted, mysterious boy who was taught to fight back. It’s a good sell. ›››

Watch: Official Trailer for Indie 'Indignation' Starring Logan Lerman

    Indignation Trailer

“I’m afraid something terrible will happen…” Summit & Roadside have released an official trailer for James Schamus’ Indignation, an adaptation of the Philip Roth late novel, starring Logan Lerman as a boy from New Jersey attending a small, conservative college in Ohio. What the synopsis fails to leave out is that he’s atheist, clashing with the head of the school, but still intelligent in his own way. Besides Lerman, the full cast features Sarah Gadon, Tracy Letts, Linda Emond, Danny Burstein and Ben Rosenfield. This premiered at Sundance to mostly positive reviews, a strong debut for Schamus. It’s not exactly the best film of the year, but it does have a wonderful score by Jay Wadley, and great performances from the entire cast. ›››

  • Ellen Page & Evan Rachel Wood in First Trailer for 'Into the Forest'

Ellen Page & Evan Rachel Wood in First Trailer for 'Into the Forest'

    Into the Forest Trailer

“This is all we have…” “We have each other.” A24 has revealed the first official trailer for a post-apocalyptic survival thriller (we seem to be getting a lot of these recently) called Into the Forest, which premiered at the Toronto and Vancouver Film Festivals late last year. Ellen Page and Evan Rachel Wood star as two women living in a remote ancient forest when the world goes crazy all around them. There’s kind of a The Road vibe to this, but it’s much more about hope and sticking together to survive. The full cast includes Max Minghella, Callum Keith Rennie, Michael Eklund and Wendy Crewson. Check this out below. ›››

  • Must Watch: Trailer for Ang Lee's 'Billy Lynn's Long Halftime Walk'

Must Watch: Trailer for Ang Lee's 'Billy Lynn's Long Halftime Walk'

Billy Lynn's Long Halftime Walk Trailer

“Your story, Billy, no longer belongs to you.” Sony Pictures has unveiled the first official trailer for Ang Lee’s adaptation of the book Billy Lynn’s Long Halftime Walk, which is an emotional story of a soldier recounting his days in the Iraq war. Ang Lee shot this in 120FPS and in 3D, but this trailer is only in 2D at regular framerates (because right now most people still hate HFR). Joe Alwyn stars as Billy Lynn, and the cast includes Kristen Stewart, Vin Diesel, Garrett Hedlund, Steve Martin, Chris Tucker and many others. As good as this looks, I have to say – I probably wouldn’t be that into this if it weren’t for Ang Lee, as I trust him quite a bit. Also seeing Vin Diesel in this reminds me of him in Saving Private Ryan, in a good way. ›››

Watch This: Short Film 'HIT TV' – A Love Letter to 80's Action-Thrillers

    HIT TV Short Film

“Listen buddy, I got money! It’s in my suitcase!” This is awesome. Filmmaker Saman Kesh has delivered his latest short film called HIT TV, a self-described “love letter to 80’s action-thrillers”. It has everything you would expect for – lush neon colors, a rad synth score, lots of guns and blood, money laundering, beautiful women. Just stop reading and watch it already! No seriously, it’s really really good – the cinematography in particular is exceptional. The short is both written and directed by Saman Kesh, who made the short film Controller previously, and features original music by Makeup & Vanity Set. As suggested in the descrption: “WATCH IT LOUD AND FULLSCREEN.” I really can’t wait to see Kesh make a full-length feature. Enjoy! ›››

  • The Great Return to the Glory of the Cannes Film Festival in France

The Great Return to the Glory of the Cannes Film Festival in France

    Cannes Film Festival

I’m back again in the South of France for the Cannes Film Festival, and it feels so good. I had to skip last year as I just couldn’t afford to make the trip, and I really missed it. So I told myself I’d be back again this year, and here I am. There’s just something about this place, a magic in the Mediterranean air that is almost tangible. There’s so much history here, but right now I’m here, I’m a part of it. When I was mirroring Roger Ebert’s book a few years ago (see “Two Weeks in the South of France” posts from 2014) there is a section where he talks about going out to Francis Ford Coppola’s boat after the Apocalypse Now premiere. That’s the kind of history that hangs over this festival, but it’s actually inspiring and exciting, not overwhelming. ›››

  • Must Watch: Michael Fassbender in First Trailer for 'Assassin's Creed'

Must Watch: Michael Fassbender in First Trailer for 'Assassin's Creed'

    Assassin's Creed Movie Trailer

“We work in the dark to serve the light. We are assassins.” Fox has debuted the first trailer for Justin Kurzel’s big screen take on the video game series Assassin’s Creed, starring Michael Fassbender as the main character. Fassbender plays Callum Lynch, and as you’ll see in this trailer, they use some sort of technology to send him back in time as his ancestor Aguilar. The cast includes Marion Cotillard, Jeremy Irons, Brendan Gleeson, Michael Kenneth Williams, Callum Turner; plus Ariane Labed, who looks totally badass. So far I’m actually impressed, this looks solid – the action looks good, the story seems intriguing, the performances look impressive, I’m hooked. Might be worth it after all. Fire this up and enjoy. ›››

  • Trailer for 'Nerve' – The Mobile Phone Thriller from 'Catfish' Directors

Trailer for 'Nerve' – The Mobile Phone Thriller from 'Catfish' Directors

    Nerve Trailer

“Are you a ‘player’ or a ‘watcher’?” Lionsgate has debuted the first official trailer for a crazy new technology thriller called Nerve, which is about an “online game” that two people get sucked into and it turns out it’s more real than they thought. This is another one of those cheesy setups where you wonder if the people who wrote this have ever actually used the internet, because of course it turns into a thriller where you don’t know how much the people after you know about you. Emma Roberts and Dave Franco star as the two people who end up trapped by this game. Hmm, I wonder if Franco has anything to do with what’s going on? I was expecting something better from the two guys behind Catfish, because this looks painfully mediocre. ›››
