Must Watch: First Trailer for Mel Gibson's WWII Film 'Hacksaw Ridge'

    Hacksaw Ridge Trailer

“While everybody is taking life, I’m going to be saving it.” Lionsgate has debuted the first trailer for the latest film directed by Mel Gibson, a World War II drama called Hacksaw Ridge, about pacifist medic Desmond T. Doss played by Andrew Garfield. Doss was awarded the Medal of Honor by President Harry S. Truman for single-handedly saving the lives of over 75 of his comrades while under constant enemy fire during the brutal Battle of Okinawa. I’m a sucker for WWII films, and this is a helluva story. The ensemble cast includes Hugo Weaving, Vince Vaughn, Sam Worthington, Luke Bracey, Rachel Griffiths, Teresa Palmer, Matt Nable & others. This actually looks incredible, I’m very much looking forward to it. ›››

Second Trailer for 'The Accountant' with Ben Affleck & Anna Kendrick

    The Accountant Trailer

“If you do down this road, you can’t go back.” WB has debuted the second trailer for The Accountant, directed by Gavin O’Connor, starring Ben Affleck as a gifted mathematician who becomes an accountant for some of the world’s most dangerous criminal organizations. The first trailer was fairly tame, introducing Affleck as Christian Wolff, but this new trailer is all about the suspense and the guns and the danger. With the government suddenly onto him, Wolffe tries to take on legitimate work and meets a young clerk, played by Anna Kendrick, who helps him uncook their books. The cast includes Jon Bernthal, Alison Wright, J.K. Simmons, John Lithgow, Jeffrey Tambor and Cynthia Addai-Robinson. From the looks of it, this might actually be pretty good, even though I’m not sure about where it’s all going to end up. Fire it up. ›››

Watch: 'The Shining Star of Losers Everywhere' Short Doc on a Horse

The Shining Star of Losers Everywhere

Never give up! This is one of those short film discoveries that makes you smile and feel so happy you want to grab the nearest person and tell them to watch it with you. The Shining Star of Losers Everywhere is an ESPN 30 for 30 short documentary made by Mickey Duzyj profiling a Japanese racehorse named Haru Urara. This horse is special because she kept losing, she lost over 100 races in a row, and yet was turned into a national superstar. The doc explains that Haru Urara became a symbol of hope, of “never giving up”, for the Japanese people during their depressing economic crisis in the 90s and 00s. She also helped save the racetrack where she was from in a small town in the south of Japan. It’s a wonderful doc with some fantastic animation and great interviews. I highly recommend watching, even if you have no interest in horse racing. ›››

    Ithaca Trailer

“There will always be pain in this world, Homer, and a good man will seek to take the pain out of things.” Momentum Pictures has debuted the first official trailer for the film Ithaca, the feature directorial debut of actress Meg Ryan, who also stars in this. Based on William Saroyan’s novel titled The Human Comedy, the story is about a bike messenger, played by Alex Neustaedter, who delivers letters during World War II in the 1940s. One letter in particular, however, will change him forever. The full cast includes Sam Shepard, Meg Ryan, Tom Hanks, Hamish Linklater, Jack Quaid, Molly Gordon and Gabriel Basso. This looks like a fairly nice, harmless indie drama to see this fall. There definitely is an indie feel to it, not in a good way, but I’m hopeful that the emotions in the story shine through in the end. Give this a watch below. ›››

  • James McAvoy in First Trailer for M. Night Shyamalan's Thriller 'Split'

James McAvoy in First Trailer for M. Night Shyamalan's Thriller 'Split'

    Split

“He knows what you’re here for. He listens to me…” Shyamalan is back with another thriller. Universal has unveiled a trailer for Split, the latest film written & directed by M. Night Shyamalan. The psychological supernatural thriller stars James McAvoy as a man haunted by four different young women, each with a desire to steal his identity, hence the title. The cast includes Anya Taylor-Joy (from The Witch), Haley Lu Richardson, Kim Director, Jessica Sula, Sterling K. Brown, Betty Buckley and Brad William Henke. This looks very interesting, unlike any kind of psychological thriller we’ve seen before, and I think that’s a good thing. The multiple personalities concept is intriguing, and I’m curious if there’s a big twist. ›››

Trailer for Doc 'Floyd Norman: An Animated Life' on Disney Animator

    Floyd Norman: An Animated Life

“Floyd says to us all: we could do better. That’s part of what makes him a legend.” This looks like a gem. FilmBuff will be releasing this award-winning documentary on a legendary animator in theaters + on VOD next month. Floyd Norman: An Animated Life tells an “intimate journey through the life and career” of 80-year-old animator Floyd Norman, the first African-American animator ever at Disney Studios (back in 1956). After working for almost all of his life, he was told by Disney to retire, but has refused to do so and keeps on working with the mantra that he’ll “die at the drawing board.” Floyd has worked on Disney films like Sleeping Beauty and The Jungle Book and even worked at Pixar on Toy Story 2 and Monsters Inc. This trailer promises such an uplifting, inspiring story about a person who totally loves the art of animation and can’t give it up, no matter how old he gets. I really want to see this, and learn even more about him. Enjoy. ›››

    Level Up Trailer

“Keep your eye on the prize, Matthew.” FilmBuff has unveiled an official US trailer for an action thriller called Level Up, about a deadbeat gamer whose beautiful girlfriend is kidnapped. In order to find her, he must deliver a package following the instructions sent to him on a mobile phone the kidnappers give him. Starring Josh Bowman, Leila Mimmack, Christina Wolfe, Neil Maskell, William Houston and Kulvinder Ghir. There’s really nothing interesting about this, and the concept isn’t that new, especially with Nerve this year and the Crank movies previously and so many other movies just like this. I dig the colorful hats the kidnappers are wearing, but that’s about the only original idea in this trailer. Have a look. ›››

One Epic Party Gets Out of Hand in First 'Office Christmas Party' Trailer

    Office Christmas Party Trailer

“Hey Santa! Wanna party?” Paramount has debuted a trailer for the comedy called Office Christmas Party, perhaps the most basic and blatantly descriptive title for a film this year. It’s about, as expected, an office Christmas party that gets out of hand. T.J. Miller organizes the whole shebang, with an ensemble cast including Jennifer Aniston, Jason Bateman, Vanessa Bayer, Jillian Bell, Jamie Chung, Rob Corddry, Abbey Lee, Kate McKinnon, Olivia Munn, Karan Soni and Matt Walsh. This is one of those party movies where it’s all about how totally crazy they can get, and what happens during/after the madness. Not sure there’s much else to this, maybe it will be fun to watch during a snowstorm or something. ›››

Watch: UK Trailer for 30th Anniversary Re-Release of 'Sid and Nancy'

    Sid and Nancy Trailer

“Who the hell do you think you are?!” Hey punk fans, it’s time to revisit this cult classic. Described as “the definitive [film] of the punk phenomenon”, the punk rock drama Sid and Nancy is getting a re-release this year for its 30th anniversary. The film stars Gary Oldman as Sex Pistols bassist Sid Vicious, who tried to start a solo career after the band broke up in 1978. The film profiles his turbulent and destructive romance with his girlfriend Nancy Spungen, played by Chloe Webb, a heroin-addicted groupie who was found dead months later. The cast includes David Hayman, Andrew Schofield, Xander Berkeley, and Courtney Love in a small role. It’s always cool to see great films return to theaters for a restored re-release. Have fun. ›››
