Must Watch: Second Trailer Arrives for 'Rogue One: A Star Wars Story'

Rogue One: A Star Wars Story

“I fear nothing. All is as the Force wills it.” Disney + LucasFilm have unveiled the second trailer for Gareth Edwards’ Rogue One: A Star Wars Story, the first spin-off in the Star Wars universe, in theaters this December. A short teaser showed during Star Wars Celebration in London and this new full-length trailer first aired during NBC’s Olympics coverage. Starring Felicity Jones as Jyn Erso, plus Mads Mikkelsen, Donnie Yen, Ben Mendelsohn, Forest Whitaker, Diego Luna, Jonathan Aris, Riz Ahmed & Alan Tudyk, Rogue One is about a group of rebels who set out on a mission to steal the plans for the Death Star. This seriously looks amazing and I love how much this feels like it’s a part of the original trilogy, yet still seems like something completely fresh. All this footage makes me happy. So many new characters to meet! ›››

  • Must Watch: First Trailer for Barry Jenkins' 'Moonlight' Set in Miami

    Moonlight Trailer

“At some point you gotta decide for yourself who you gunna be, can’t let nobody make that decision for you.” Wow. A24 has debuted the official trailer for a film called Moonlight, an emotional drama set across three different timelines following the story of a young boy coming to grips with his own sexuality during the Way on Drugs era in Miami. Ashton Sanders stars as the older Chiron, with an impressive ensemble cast including Naomie Harris, Mahershala Ali, André Holland, Tre’ Rhodes and Janelle Monáe. From the trailer this looks phenomenal, and I’ve already been hearing great buzz from a couple of people who have been lucky enough to see it already. The music in this trailer adds so much emotion, and there’s some stunning shots from cinematographer James Laxton. This film should definitely be on your radar now. ›››

  • Watch: Animated Short Film 'Glove' About a NASA Astronaut's Glove

Watch: Animated Short Film 'Glove' About a NASA Astronaut's Glove

    Glove Short Film

“It’ll still float on…” Now this is creative filmmaking at its finest. Inspired by a random throwaway shot in a NASA documentary about the Apollo missions, Alexa Haas and Bernardo Britto decided to make a short film about an astronaut’s glove somehow came loose and went floating into the abyss of space. The short film is titled Glove and it features hand-painted animation by Alexa Haas, telling a wondrous story of the life of this glove. I saw this at the Sundance Film Festival earlier this year, as it played in front of the film Operation Avalanche, which is pretty much perfect pairing. My only complaint is that I hate the looping of the final shot at the credits – once or twice was enough. Other than that, this is so much fun to watch. Enjoy. ›››

  • Eddie Murphy is Back in First Trailer for Heartfelt Drama 'Mr. Church'

    Mr. Church Trailer

“You gave me the most important thing that life can offer – you gave me a family.” Cinelou Releasing has debuted an official trailer for the heartfelt drama Mr. Church, starring Eddie Murphy as a talented cook named Henry Joseph Church – based on a real person. This isn’t a comedy, though it starts out with some light humor, it’s actually a drama with some strong emotions – Mr. Church was a chef for a family in Los Angeles in the 1960s & 70s that had a mother ill with cancer. The film also stars Britt Robertson (from Tomorrowland) as well as Natascha McElhone, Lucy Fry, Christian Madsen, and Xavier Samuel. Fun fact – Samuel Jackson was originally going to star, but Murphy replaced him after scheduling conflicts. This looks charming, maybe not the best film you’ll see all year, but a sweet and touching story. Have a look. ›››

  • Crazy New Red Band Trailer for Blind Man Horror Film 'Don't Breathe'

Crazy New Red Band Trailer for Blind Man Horror Film 'Don't Breathe'

    Don't Breathe Red Band Trailer

“How many of you are there?” Sony has debuted a wicked new red band trailer for Fede Alvarez’s Don’t Breathe, the horror thriller about a blind man who seeks revenge on a group of teens who break into his house and try to mess with him. This is a crazy cool, twisted concept for a film and it seems like it’s actually pretty messed up with the footage they show in this trailer. The cast features Jane Levy, Dylan Minnette, Daniel Zovatto and Stephen Lang as the badass blind dude who seems to have a very demented side to him. This is an impressive trailer, the way it’s cut together and the “f**cked up” dialogue all helps make it eerie but effectively enticing. Not your typical trailer editing, but this actually works well. Take a look below. ›››

  • Official US Trailer for Outstanding Iranian Horror 'Under the Shadow'

    Under the Shadow Trailer

“There’s no escape from them.” Vertical Ent. has unveiled the US trailer for a horror-thriller called Under the Shadow, which premiered at the Sundance Film Festival this year. This outstanding ghost story is set in Tehran and stars Narges Rashidi and Avin Manshadi as mother and daughter who are haunted by a malevolent spirit after an unexploded bomb crashes into the apartment above theirs. Also features Bobby Naderi, Ray Haratian and Arash Marandi. I saw this at Sundance and loved it, writing in my review it’s a “simple, sleek, well-made film that above all is efficient in telling a creepy ghost story.” Don’t skip this one. ›››

  • Rachel Weisz & Michael Shannon Star in 'Complete Unknown' Trailer

Rachel Weisz & Michael Shannon Star in 'Complete Unknown' Trailer

    Complete Unknown Trailer

“It’s when everyone thinks they know who you are, then you’re trapped.” IFC Films & Amazon Studios have debuted the trailer for an indie drama called Complete Unknown, from director Joshua Marston, starring Rachel Weisz and Michael Shannon. The film is a mystery about a man, played by Michael Shannon, planning to move to a new state with his wife for her graduate program. Just as he is about to do so, a woman from his past who often changes identities, played by Rachel Weisz, reenters his life at a birthday dinner party. The full cast includes Danny Glover, Kathy Bates, Condola Rashad and Chris Lowell. This originally premiered at Sundance this year but I don’t recall hearing much buzz about it, at all. The mystery surrounding Weisz’s character looks intriguing, but I’m not sure if the payoff will be worth it. ›››

  • One More Quick Trailer for Ron Howard's 'Inferno' with Tom Hanks

One More Quick Trailer for Ron Howard's 'Inferno' with Tom Hanks

    Inferno Trailer

“Only he can unlock the mystery. Only he can stop the unthinkable.” Another new fast-paced trailer has debuted online for Ron Howard’s adaptation of the other Dan Brown novel, Inferno, once again starring Tom Hanks as symbologist Robert Langdon. We’ve already seen a couple of different trailers for this movie already, and this new one tries to hype up the excitement of the story even more. The cast includes Felicity Jones as Dr. Sienna Brooks, Langdon’s beautiful sidekick in this one, plus Ben Foster, Irrfan Khan, Omar Sy, Sidse Babett Knudsen, Ana Ularu, and Ida Darvish. As much as I have enjoyed reading the novels, this particular big screen version of Langdon’s history-inspired, globe-trotting, solve-the-mystery thriller doesn’t seem to be that exciting. Here’s to hoping it’s much better than it looks, only time will tell. ›››

    When Two Worlds Collide Doc

“This must end.” First Run Features has debuted an official trailer for a powerful environmental activism documentary called When Two Worlds Collide, which premiered at the Sundance Film Festival this year and won a Special Jury Prize for Best Debut Feature. The doc is about the conflict between the Peruvian government and Peruvian activists trying to save the Amazon rainforest in Peru. The jury at Sundance gave the film an award stating that “this film impresses us because of the tenacity of the filmmakers in staying with the story of many years. This film was beautiful, raw and had incredible tension.” From the trailer, you can get a glimpse at some of the remarkable footage they have of the violent fight between the politicians and the people. This looks like investigative doc filmmaking at its finest, and most powerful. Watch below. ›››

Trailer for Doc 'The Giant's Dream' on the Making of 'The Iron Giant'

    The Giant's Dream Doc

Warner Bros is going all-out with the release of the Signature Edition of The Iron Giant on Blu-ray this fall. One of the Special Features included is this documentary – called The Giant’s Dream, a comprehensive look at the Making of Brad Bird’s animated classic The Iron Giant, which first hit theaters in 1999. This is directed by Anthony Giacchino, brother of composer Michael Giacchino, who has been making docs for years. It seems like much more than some 20 minute extra, diving deep into the production and process of creating this beloved animated film. They have tons of behind-the-scenes footage of Brad Bird riling up everyone trying to pull off something unique. But it ends on such an ominous note – “what could go wrong?” ›››
