  • Sonic the Hedgehog: A Visual History of SEGA's Mascot

Until Sonic The Hedgehog debuted on the SEGA Genesis, a fat plumber somewhat inexplicably served as the game industry’s most recognizable icon. All of that changed when gamers saw SEGA’s blue blur careening off springs, zipping through loops and wagging his finger disapprovingly at people still playing “baby games” on Super Nintendo.

After several failed mascots (Alex Kidd, we hardly knew ye!) SEGA scored a major hit with Sonic, and he has remained the company’s spokes-hedgehog for nearly three decades, appearing in dozens of titles across SEGA platforms. Even after the failure of the Dreamcast, Sonic endured, finding new life on Microsoft, Sony and even — gasp — Nintendo consoles.  After the most recent reveal of Sonic in the upcoming live-action film, we thought we’d take a look at this visual history of the blue hedgehog to celebrate over 25 years of ramps, rings and Robotnik.

  • Half of All Switch Owners Bought Zelda, Mario, Mario Kart

Half of all Switch owners purchased Nintendo’s three biggest games, according to Nintendo of America president and COO Reggie Fils-Aime.

Speaking to IGN about Switch’s success following The Game Awards last week, Fils-Aime said the attach rate for Super Mario Odyssey, The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild, and Mario Kart 8 Deluxe represents a record in the United States.

“Those three games continue to attach to hardware at better than 50 percent,” Fils-Aime told IGN. “Just think about that. For everyone who owns a system, more than one out of every two have bought Zelda, more than one out of every two have bought Kart, more than one out of every two have bought Odyssey. That’s never happened in U.S. video game history.”

  • Metro Exodus Has Gone Gold, Will Release One Week Early

4A Games and publisher Deep Silver were planning to release Metro Exodus on February 22, but they have good news for fans of the post-apocalyptic franchise: The game is now arriving a little earlier.

Metro Exodus will now release on February 15, 2019, meaning it will no longer be launching on the same day as BioWare’s Anthem.

Instead, its competition will be Crackdown 3 on Xbox One, as well as Far Cry New Dawn. The latter game was just announced at The Game Awards, and also features a nuclear post-apocalyptic setting, albeit in Montana instead of Moscow.

For those who have purchased Super Smash Bros. Ultimate for the Nintendo Switch, you may want to check your email as your DLC code for Piranha Plant may be there waiting.

Owners of Super Smash Bros. Ultimate, and those who purchase a copy by January 31, 2019, will be rewarded with an unexpected brand-new fighter, Piranha Plant, in February of next year.

However, you will need to redeem a code that Nintendo will send to the email linked to your Nintendo Account to receive the new character. The problem? The email’s subject line doesn’t indicate a code is inside and simply says “Thanks for your purchase of the Super Smash Bros. Ultimate game.”
