  • The Mario Maker Challenge is Back!

Super Mario Maker 2 is here! And while we’re blown away by some of the awesome community maps and levels that we’ve seen so far, we also wanted to get in on the action ourselves.

Just like last time, we’ve paired up our editors with one another, and they’ll build levels for each other. Whether these are fun/cool tributes to our favorite Mario games or Machiavellian death traps built solely to destroy friendships remains to be seen, but either way, it’s going to be a good time.

  • CD Projekt Red Developing Three Cyberpunk Games

Polish video game studio CD Projekt is working on not one, but three games set in the Cyberpunk RPG universe. That’s according to the company’s CEO who reportedly revealed the studio’s future Cyberpunk plans during a business meeting in Poland.

A report from Polish business website Bankier revealed that CD Projekt president Adam Kiciński and CEO Piotr Nielubowicz issued a statement that the company is working on three Cyberpunk-related projects.

We already know what one of these three projects is, the upcoming Cyberpunk 2077. But based on a Google translated version of the report, Nielubowicz said that the next big CD Projekt game will also be set in the “Cyberpunk” universe.

  • Black Mesa: Xen Aims to Fix Half-Life 1’s Weakest Part

Many gamers consider Half-Life 2 to be Valve’s greatest achievement and one of the best games ever made. I, for one, have always preferred the original Half-Life. With no disrespect to Alyx, Dog, or the gravity gun, the mystery of the Black Mesa facility, the slow onion-peeling reveal of one weird layer after another, the mystery of the G-Man and, lest many forget, the two endings(!) that the original delivered always left a more lasting impression for me. But what knocks Half-Life 1 down a peg for a lot of folks – and this is hard to argue against – is a particular part of the campaign: Xen. The alien dimension is placed right near the end of Gordon Freeman’s Excellent Science Adventure, and it was…a let-down, for sure, after the GOAT-quality experience up until that point.

  • Atsushi Inaba on Why PlatinumGames Is an Unconventional Studio

One of the things I love most about BitSummit – the yearly Kyoto-based indie games showcase – is that it’s a very egalitarian-feeling event. One booth may have a solo dev from Scandinavia demoing his or her very first project, the next may be showing off Bloodstained: Ritual of the Night, and be manned by the legendary Koji Igarashi himself. Walking around the show floor you’ll see this kind of juxtaposition repeatedly: there’s no barrier between the industry newcomers and the veterans – and if you spot the likes of Swery, Shuhei Yoshida or Keita Takahashi, you can just say hello.

The Biggest Games that Weren’t at E3

E3 is the big opportunity for developers to show off a year’s worth of work, but every year some of the biggest surprises are what wasn’t at the show. E3 2019 was huge for some of the most anticipated games coming in 2019 and 2020, but with Sony abstaining from this year’s conference we were denied the further details we’ve been craving since last year’s reveals. But Sony’s games weren’t the only ones that were MIA – here, we’ve collected every big game we could think of that was missing from this year’s lineup.
