  • Violent Video Games Should Be Taxed Extra, Lawmaker Says

Rhode Island state representative Robert Nardolillo has proposed legislation in the Ocean State that seeks to add an extra tax on violent video games. In a news release this week, the Republican lawmaker said the funds from this tax would go towards mental health and counselling resources. This legislation would put an additional 10 percent sales tax on video games sold in Rhode Island that carry an M-for-Mature or higher rating from the ESRB.

Rhode Island’s sales tax rate is 7 percent, meaning $60 games actually cost $64.20. With the extra 10 percent, an M-rated game like Grand Theft Auto V would cost $70.20. That’s a good amount extra. Nardolillo says the revenue from this tax would be put into a “special account” to be dispersed to school districts for the purposes of funding counselling, mental health programs, and “other conflict resolution activities.”

“Our goal is to make every school in Rhode Island a safe and calm place for students to learn,” Nardolillo said in a news release. “By offering children resources to manage their aggression today, we can ensure a more peaceful tomorrow.”

Nardolillo’s proposed legislation comes just days after the horrific high school shooting in Parkland, Florida. In the wake of the tragedy, President Trump said he’s heard people say “the level of violence in video games is really shaping young people’s thoughts.”

Nardolillo went on to say, without citing any specific study or data, that “there is evidence that children exposed to violent video games at a young age tend to act more aggressively than those who are not.” He added: “This bill would give schools the additional resources needed to help students deal with that aggression in a positive way.”

Some argue there is assuredly a link between playing violent video games and increased levels of aggressive behaviour, while others maintain that games themselves don’t cause violence, but are rather one prominent risk factor for violent real-world behaviour.

This is not the first time a politician has called for an excise tax on specific video games. After the Sandy Hook shooting in Newtown, Connecticut, a lawmaker from the state proposed a similar tax in 2013. Also that year, a state representative from Missouri proposed a sales tax on games rated M and above. In both cases, the funds would have gone towards mental health programs. However, the bills never became law.

  • Death Stranding Cast Adds The Last Of Us And Days Gone Actors

Prolific video game performance actor Troy Baker has joined the cast of Hideo Kojima’s Death Stranding, along with Emily O’Brien, another well known actor that has been featured in a number of big games.

O’Brien made the announcement on Instagram by posting a picture of herself with Baker and Norman Reedus, who has already been confirmed as one of the main characters in Death Stranding. “Honored to be working alongside these two fine lads on Hideo Kojima’s new project Death Stranding,” reads the caption. “I’m a lucky gal ;)”

A post shared by Emily O’Brien (@emroya) on

O’Brien’s recent credits include Days Gone, which is in development at Sony’s Bend Studios, Arkane Studios’ Dishonored: Death of the Outsider, Telltale’s Batman: The Enemy Within and Guardians of the Galaxy series’, and World of Final Fantasy.

Baker, meanwhile, is reprising the role of Joel for Naughty Dog’s The Last of Us Part II, and most recently voiced Talion in Middle-earth: Shadow of War, Sam Drake in Uncharted 4 and The Lost Legacy, and is Batman/Bruce Wayne in Telltale’s series based on DC’s Dark Knight.

As of yet there hasn’t been a confirmed Death Stranding release date, but Kojima hinted that it might launch in 2018. It also stars Mads Mikkelson (Hannibal), director Guillermo Del Toro (Pan’s Labyrinth, The Shape of Water) and Norman Reedus (The Walking Dead).

The last Death Stranding trailer was 8-minutes long and, although it’s very exciting, creates a whole bunch of new questions, which is pretty standard for Kojima’s titles. In April, Kojima spoke a little about the game, explaining why he wanted Norman Reedus to be naked in the game’s first trailer. We’ve also since learned why its fog looks so nice.

  • How Lost Changed TV Shows Forever

If you were watching TV in 2004, chances are you or someone else you knew was completely and utterly obsessed with Lost. ABC’s drama series took the world by storm, creating a passionate fanbase that took to the internet to discuss each episode and theorize about what it all means.

In 2018 that might not sound like anything special, but it’s important to note that this was the very first show to capture the hearts and minds of TV audiences living in the internet age. It wasn’t easy to congregate on places like Facebook, Twitter, or YouTube because, well, they didn’t exist in any meaningful way.

But part of being a Lost fan was engaging with others, and it was undoubtedly a show that gave its audience plenty of material to work with. Lost was filled with characters to love–and hate–mysteries to consider, and wild twists that shocked us. Regardless of whether you love it or hate it, the fact that it was a cultural phenomenon is undeniable.

And now, it’s available to stream in its entirety on Hulu. To celebrate its arrival on the streaming service we decided to put together a video looking back at what made Lost so unique. If you’d like to read instead of watch, you can check out our gallery on the 8 Ways Lost Changed TV.

  • Dragon Ball FighterZ Bardock And Broly Trailers Are Quick And Punchy

Dragon Ball FighterZ Bardock And Broly Trailers Are Quick And Punchy

Bandai Namco has released a couple of very short teasers for Broly and Bardock, the first DLC fighters for Dragon Ball FighterZ. There’s no combat gameplay but we do see the legendary Super Saiyan and the father of Goku gearing up for a fight. These short animations look to be pre-fight intros which have been edited down.

For fans of Dragon Ball Z the inclusion of Broly is exciting, as he’s incredibly powerful and, in the series’ lore, is believed to be a mythical warrior that only appears once every 1000 years. No doubt there will be some awe-inspiring combo videos made with him. It’ll be interesting to see his fighting style as, despite his overwhelming size, Broly manages to remain quite light on his feet.

Bardock, meanwhile, is the father of Dragon Ball Z protagonist Goku, but hasn’t had as many opportunities to show off his fighting ability. In Dragon Ball FighterZ, however, not only will he be able to take on some the series’ most iconic fighters, but he’ll also be able to transform into a Super Saiyan.

Images of both characters as well as some brief details (below) have also appeared on the Japanese Dragon Ball FighterZ website. Broly is described as being super powerful with long reach and has his signature energy attack: “Eraser Cannon.” Bardock, meanwhile, is a rush character that combines speed and power. He excels in close distances and has a move called “Riot Javelin,” which is likely similar to his Final Spirit Cannon from the series.

Broly and Bardock are included in Dragon Ball FighterZ’s season pass, along with the other six yet-to-be-revealed DLC characters coming to the fighting game. Bandai Namco hasn’t announced individual pricing for the two fighters, but the season pass costs $35 USD / £29 / $52.95 AU.

  • New Super Mario Odyssey Mode Added In Free Update

Nintendo has released a free update for Super Mario Odyssey, bringing a new mini-game called “Balloon World” to the critically acclaimed Nintendo Switch title. Along with the new mode, there’s also two new filters to use when taking screenshots in the Snapshot Mode.

Balloon World becomes available once the main game is completed and, to get started, players need to find Luigi in each Kingdom and talk to him. Balloon World’s “Hide It” mode lets you hide balloons within stages that other players race to find. Conversely, “Find It” mode let’s you track down other balloons hidden by players from across the globe.

“Whether players are hiding balloons or finding them, their Rank will go up based on their score,” Nintendo explains in a press release. “While playing Balloon World, the atmosphere will change for each kingdom: for example, players will see it rain in New Donk City during the day and watch the sunset in Tostarena.”

Also in the update are “a range of new outfits”, including The Sunshine, Musician, and Knight Armor outfits, all of which become available in the shop after the main story is finished. The two new Snapshot filters, meanwhile, are Coin and Neon.

In GameSpot’s Super Mario Odyssey review the game was awarded a 10, and GameSpot voted it the third best game of 2017. It was a great year for Nintendo overall, with Switch becoming the fastest selling console in the US, and Super Mario Odyssey taking the top slot of Amazon’s best-selling games of the year.

  • Black Panther Director Writes Emotional Thank You To Fans

While Marvel is not in business of making movie flops, the huge commercial success of Black Panther has surpassed many expectations. The movie made $202 million in its opening weekend, setting a new record for a film released in February, and has now made more than DC’s Justice League did in its entire run. Director Ryan Coogler has now released an emotional letter thanking fans of their support of the film.

Coogler explains that he never expected audiences to turn out in the volume they have, and stated that the overwhelming response “moved me and my wife to tears.” Check out his tweet below:

    #WakandaForever pic.twitter.com/CmJySoHFjB

    — Marvel Studios (@MarvelStudios) February 21, 2018

Cooger writes: “I am struggling to find the words to express my gratitude at this moment but I will try. Filmmaking is a team sport. And our team was made up of amazing people from all over the world who believed in this story. Deep down we all hoped that people would come see a film about a fictional country on the continent of Africa, made up of people of African descent.

“Never in a million years did we imagine that you all would come out this strong. It still humbles me to think that people care enough to spend their money and time watching our film–but to see people of all backgrounds wearing clothing that celebrates their heritage, taking pictures next to our posters with their friends and family, and sometimes dancing in the lobbies of theaters–moved me and my wife to tears.

“For all the people who bought out theaters, who posted on social about how lit the film would be, bragged about our awesome cast, picked out outfits to wear, and who stood in line in theaters all over the world–all before even seeing the film. To the press who wrote about the film for the folks who hadn’t seen it, and encouraged audiences to come out.

“And to the young ones who came out with their parents, with their mentors, and with their friends… thank you for giving our team of filmmakers the greatest gift: The opportunity to share this film, that we poured our hearts and souls into, with you.”

In related news, Captain American star Chris Evans this week seemed to confirm that the rumored Black Widow movie is in development at Marvel. Evans was asked about the success of Black Panther, and said, “There’s nothing they can’t do, man,” he said. “I’m sure it’s going to have the exact same effect when Captain Marvel comes out, and then the Black Widow movie comes out. Marvel just has the winning recipe.”

  • Burnout Paradise Remastered Microtransaction Listing Is A Mistake, Says EA

Burnout Paradise Remastered Microtransaction Listing Is A Mistake, Says EA

Burnout Paradise Remastered will not, it seems, include microtransactions. After the PS4, Xbox One, and PC remaster was announced yesterday, some fans spotted that the game’s PlayStation Store listing stated it would include optional “in-game purchases.” The message is still present on the store listing, but EA says the note is a mistake.

“The store listing for Burnout Paradise that mentions ‘in-game purchases optional’ is an error,” said EA’s community engagement manager, Ben Walke. “There is no MTX or any additional paid for content. Pitchforks down please.”

EA has received criticism from fans for its handling of microtransactions, primarily with regards to Star Wars Battlefront II. The company says the game was a “learning opportunity,” however microtransactions are coming back to Battlefront II, having previously been temporarily removed.

The original Burnout Paradise received a number of DLC packs, and the eight main ones that launched during the Year of Paradise are included in the remaster. They are Big Surf Island, the Party Pack, Burnout Bikes, Boost Special, Legendary Cars, Cagney Update, Toys, and the Cops & Robbers Pack. All that will set you back US $40 / £35 / AU $48 on PS4 and Xbox One.

The remaster’s release date has been set for March 16, with a PC version coming “later this year.” The current-gen edition includes “high resolution textures” and 4K / 60 FPS support for PS4 Pro and Xbox One X.

Burnout Paradise Remastered Announced For PS4, Xbox One, And PC

Burnout Paradise is getting a current-gen remaster, publisher EA has confirmed. The racing game has been given a PS4 and Xbox One release date of March 16, while the PC version is coming “later this year.”

Burnout Paradise Remastered will include the base game and eight add-on packs–including the open-world expansion Big Surf Island–as well as the Legendary Cars pack, which brought vehicles based on those from movies such as Back to the Future and Ghostbusters. EA says this new edition includes technical enhancements that include “high resolution textures” and 4K / 60 FPS support for PS4 Pro and Xbox One X. It will cost US $40 / £35 / AU $48.

We enjoyed Paradise upon its release in 2008, with critic Alex Navarro saying it’s a “superbly fun racer” in our Burnout Paradise review and awarding it a 9/10. It’s still the most recent game in the mainline series of Burnout games. Since then, developer Criterion has made one spin-off–Burnout Crash–and Need For Speed: Most Wanted, as well as helping out with other games such as Need For Speed: Rivals and Star Wars Battlefront II. It was also working on an extreme sports game, though that was later canceled, with EA saying the developer was experimenting with new IP.

  • Free Xbox One Games With Gold For March 2018 Detailed

With March drawing near, Microsoft has announced the lineup of games that Xbox Live Gold members will be able to download for free next month. There’s the usual total of four new games being introduced across Xbox One and Xbox 360, with an especially good one up for grabs on the newer console.

On Xbox One, the month starts out with Trials of the Blood Dragon, a more action-oriented take on the Trials series that’s somewhat in the vein of Far Cry 3‘s Blood Dragon spin-off. It will be available for free for the entire month. From March 16 through April 15, Superhot will be free. The excellent shooter sports a distinct visual style and an even more novel concept, as time (mostly) freezes when you stop moving, allowing you to set up some Matrix-style bullet-dodging sequences.

Xbox 360 owners also get two games to download in March. During the first half of the month, it’s Brave: The Video Game, which is based on Disney’s film of the same name and was just added to the Xbox One’s backwards compatibility list. It’s then followed in the second half by Quantum Conundrum, the puzzle-based first-person game from Airtight Games and Kim Swift, one of the key developers behind Portal and Left 4 Dead. As always, both Xbox 360 games are playable on Xbox One through backwards compatibility.

In the meantime, it’s not too late to grab some of February’s free Games With Gold titles. One of the Xbox One games, Assassin’s Creed Chronicles: India, will also remain free for the first half of March. Claiming any of these games allows you to continue playing them for as long as you’re an Xbox Live Gold subscriber.

Likely the biggest addition of the week is the live-action movie adaptation of FullMetal Alchemist. The film, based on the popular anime, was released in Japan back in December. In lieu of a theatrical release in the United States, it will instead stream on Netflix.

Additionally, February 18 saw the premiere of the streamer’s new weekly talk show, The Joel McHale Show with Joel McHale. The sci-fi movie stars Alexander Skarsgard as a mute bartender searching for his missing girlfriend in the near-future.
