  • Crytek Ready to Jump Into Virtual Reality

Crytek Ready to Jump Into Virtual Reality

Crysis maker Crytek has expressed hopes to create a full virtual reality experience, the developer has revealed. Speaking in an interview with GameSpot, Crytek managing director Faruk Yerli touched upon Crytek’s plans in the VR space.

“We are exploring VR right now. We want to show the world true VR experience can only come from CryEngine, the best one. We see VR as an important device for enthusiasts, then going to mainstream probably. We want to elevate what we can do here… we hope to one day deliver a fully-fleshed VR experience,” Yerli said.

He discussed the challenges of bringing VR to a wider audience, speaking of physical limitations “in terms of what gameplay actions you can do.” With regards dealing with motion sickness, Yerli said that Crytek had “already found solutions” for it. Crytek creative director Frank Vitz also noted that the engine was able to make use of AMD’s LiquidVR technology “directly out of the box” to achieve lower latency across multiple GPUs.

Crytek is known for some of the best-looking games in the industry, which it creates with its proprietary CryEngine. Last year the developer said that it is becoming increasingly difficult to impress players with stunning graphics, but hopes to keep pushing boundaries. The developer also announced a CryEngine licensing plan last year, which allows developers to use CryEngine for $10 a month per user.

  • Titanfall DLC Goes Free on Xbox One and Xbox 360

Microsoft has removed the price of all of Titanfall‘s DLC on Xbox One and Xbox 360, according to the game’s store page, in what appears to be a limited-time promotion.

Titanfall’s trio of expansions–Expedition, Frontier’s Edge, and IMC Rising–usually cost $10 in the US and £7 in the UK. However, the Xbox store in both territories lists all the content on both systems as free (US page, UK page).

It is unclear how long the promotion will last, and neither Microsoft nor EA have announced the deal. The promotion does appear to tie in with the one-year anniversary of Titanfall, which first shipped on Xbox One and PC on March 11.

PC owners cannot take advantage of the deal, with EA’s Origin platform currently listing each content pack for $10 (£8).

GameSpot has contacted both companies for further details.

Titanfall was pitched by Microsoft as one of the Xbox One’s first major console exclusives. GameSpot’s Titanfall review was laced with praise, describing Respawn’s debut shooter as “a game that combines the vibrant and new with the tried and true to create something special.”

Titanfall 2, likely the next triple-A game in production at Respawn studios, will not be an Xbox exclusive.

  • Watch an Original NES Run Netflix

Netflix Hack Day is an biannual event for the company’s engineers and designers to cut loose and do something wacky. This year, a trio of hackers got the video streaming service working on an NES.

The results are actually probably worse than you’d expect. The interface works by scrolling text in the same way that you’d run through an old Mario Bros. game. In a clip posted to YouTube, the engineers try to watch House of Cards.

Because something like this requires so much of the console’s power and memory the console can only output four colors instead of its usual 256 while playing video. According to the video, the software is running on an unmodified NES console, but the engineers don’t reveal how they got the hack working.

In any case, you probably won’t be watching the latest dramas or old Futurama episodes on this machine, still it’s fun to see people still messing around with the 30-year-old console.

We reached out to the hackers for details on how they got this set-up working, and will update when we have more information.

  • Remember Me 2 Already Has Story, Capcom Just Needs To Greenlight It

Remember Me 2 Already Has Story, Capcom Just Needs To Greenlight It

Remember Me and Life is Strange developer Dontnod allegedly has the story for Remember Me 2 completed. Speaking to Siliconera, creative director, Jean-Maxime Moris said, “We know what we would do for Remember Me 2. The main story has been written. We know what we would add to the recipe. We know what we would fix. It’s a game that’s ready to be made, but that decision is Capcom’s to make.”

Reception for Remember Me was mixed at launch. Gamespot critic Kevin VanOrd generally praised the game, awarding it a 7 out of 10, but other sites weren’t so kind. Negative reviews prompted Moris to claim that the “game was misunderstood” and that it was “buried under the hype for [The Last of Us].”

Even if Capcom did want a sequel, for the time being Dontnod is focused on its episodic game Life is Strange, which is published by Square Enix. Moris said, “Obviously we need to see and Square Enix needs to see how the first season [of Life is Strange] does to really decide whether we kick it off or not.”

We reached out to Capcom about the future of Remember Me 2. The publisher responded saying, “Capcom has made no announcements about a new Remember Me title.”

  • Xbox Live Struggling on Xbox 360 [UPDATE]

Xbox Live Struggling on Xbox 360 [UPDATE]

[UPDATE 7:34 PM EDT] “Purchase and Content Usage” on Xbox Live for Xbox 360 remains “limited,” but the rest of the core services are back up and running

    The original story is below.

Xbox Live for Xbox 360 is currently facing a number of issues.

A service alert posted on Microsoft’s website explains that Purchase and Content Usage and Social and Gaming are “limited.” Earlier today, core services like signing-in were affected, but those problems have since been fixed.

“Are you having a tough time matchmaking or using the Smartglass application? We’re hard at work right now trying to get things back to normal,” Microsoft said. “Thanks for your patience!”

Xbox Live for Xbox One is not affected.

The issues for Xbox Live on Xbox 360 today come on the same day that Grand Theft Auto V introduced the long-awaited online Heists mode. It is unclear, however, if the Xbox Live downtime and the release of Heists are in any way connected.

“Microsoft is aware of an issue affecting access to some Xbox 360 services. We are working to restore full access to these services as quickly as possible,” a representative said.

GTA Online Heists, too, are struggling today.

Keep checking back with GameSpot for the latest on the connectivity issues for Xbox Live and GTA Online.

  • Xbox One March System Update Goes Live

Microsoft has begun rolling out its Xbox One system software update to general users following a closed beta test period.

Chief among the new additions is the long-awaited and routinely requested screenshot functionality. Though it is technically possible to take a screenshot on the Xbox One, the current process is known to be fairly complex.

With the March system update, taking screenshots will be as simple as double-tapping the Xbox Guide button, and pressing Y to save the image to local storage. Users with Kinect can also say “Xbox, take a screenshot.”

Meanwhile, the Upload Studio now acts as a file manager for not just video clips, but also screenshots. With this application, users can find their chosen screenshot and select it as their system-wide wallpaper. Microsoft says it also plans to use Upload Studio as a means to publish images to social media channels, including Twitter, though this function isn’t available yet.

Details on the sweeping changes to Upload Studio, including major additions to its video editing software, can be found here.

Also included in the software update are new social features such as suggested friends and real name requests, the latter of which is similar to the function on the PlayStation 4. Meanwhile, Microsoft appears to be suggesting that it has made some tweaks to the tile transparency settings.

A detailed preview of the update, written by Microsoft, is copied below:

Screenshots: New in preview is a highly requested feature by our community from the Xbox feedback site. While playing a game, you can now take screenshots on your Xbox One console by simply double-tapping the Xbox button on your controller to capture a screenshot and pressing Y to save the screenshot. You can also say “Xbox Take a Screenshot” to take and save a screenshot.

Upload App: The Upload app is being updated so that you can manage your screenshots in addition to your game clips. You can use a screenshot as your background, by viewing the screenshot in full-screen mode from the Upload app, then, press the Menu button and select Set as background. In coming preview builds, you will be able to use Upload to share screenshots to your activity feed, attach to messages, add screenshots to your showcase, and eventually share to Twitter. Also, your screenshots will be visible in your profile alongside your game clips. In the initial preview build, the sharing functions are not yet enabled, but you can start capturing screenshots and using them for your backgrounds.

Suggested friends: With the suggested friends feature, the Friends area in home and your friends list will help you find and add friends. Suggested friends will include people you might know, so you add more friends to game with, and top community broadcasters and clip creators, so you can get more great content in your activity feed. We’re also adding a new suggested friends page to the Friends area.

Sharing your name: This month in preview, we’re rolling out two new ways to share your real name; with all of your friends or to everyone in the Xbox Live community. You can also continue to share your real name with select friends, or with no one, if that’s what you prefer. Gamertags are still the primary method of identifying yourself on Xbox Live, but sharing your real name helps people recognize you who might not know you by your gamertag. The new name sharing options can be found underFriends > My profile > Name sharing settings.

Tile transparency: We continue to listen to your feedback and are adding a setting to enable you to vary the level of transparency for your background images, go toSettings > My Xbox > Tile transparency.

Privacy and online safety settings: We added a new setting for sharing voice search data to create an option for you to allow collection and analysis of voice data when using Xbox – Bing to search. You can go to Settings > Privacy and online safety > Share voice search data to change the setting.

Report spam: The Messages app has an added option to allow you to notify Xbox when you receive spam. You can now select a specific message, press the A button and then select Report > Spam to report a specific message as spam.

OneGuide for Australia: Support for OneGuide will continue in preview in Australia for free-to-air TV listings.

Xbox One Digital TV Tuner in Australia: Xbox One owners in Australia with an Xbox Digital TV Tuner can now use it with the preview builds of this month’s release.

Retail GameStop stores in the United States will be accepting donations to go to the family of the Philadelphia police officer who died in a store shootout last week, Polygon has reported. Starting from tomorrow until March 24, GameStop stores will process donations to Robert Wilson III’s memorial fund.

One hundred percent of donations will go to Wilson’s family. GameStop has also donated an undisclosed amount to the fund.

Wilson was at the store while on duty to perform a security check and to buy a gift for his eight-year-old son, who was being rewarded for doing well in school. Two men entered the store with the intention of committing robbery and encountered Wilson in uniform. A shootout ensued, with over 50 shots fired in a 30-second time span. Wilson was shot multiple times at close range and was killed by a shot to the head.

“The officer was a hero and a warrior–he fought until the very, very end–firing at both of them,” Philadelphia Police Homicide Capt. Darrell Clark said.

More details on the trust fund for Wilson’s family can be found here.

This War Of Mine DLC Helps Children Affected By War

According to the Steam page, The War Child Charity DLC contains “unique street art pieces made by artists from all over the world including: M-City, Gabriel “Specter” Reese, SeaCreative, Emir Cerimovic, Fauxreel and Mateusz Waluś.” The pieces are spread throughout the game, and each will have something to say about the nature of “humanity during a time of war.”

All of the proceeds from the DLC will go to the charity War Child–a group dedicated to helping children caught up in wars and conflicts throughout the world. The pack is available at three price points: $0.99, $9.99, $19.99, but the content is the same regardless how much you donate. The point is to provide more options for players who have more to give.

  • Helldivers Glitch Wipes Save Data When PS4/PS3 Controller Dies

Helldivers Glitch Wipes Save Data When PS4/PS3 Controller Dies

The new Playstation release, Helldivers, seems to be having a bit of trouble. According to Kotaku, players have been reporting odd bugs that will wipe all progress if the batteries in the controller die. Apparently, the glitch will cause a new level one character to spawn and immediately save over your previous data — effectively wiping your save.

Helldivers developers, Arrowhead, have confirmed that this is an issue and that they will be working on fixing for the forthcoming 1.03 patch. In the meantime, Arrowhead posted a few tips on the Helldivers subreddit.

Wiped progression? Don’t turn off your controller!

There is currently an issue with players experiencing wiped save data. We found an issue related to the controller dropping its connection to the game and then when you reconnect, the game spawns your avatar before it manages to load your old save. This results in what looks like lost progress, and often results in progress being lost if you let the game finish its save.

What we are doing about it: We have fixed this specific occurrence and are investigating other ways that save data might get reset as we are seeing reports of unrelated save reset issues. The fix for this specific issue will be in patch 1.03.

What you can do about it: Make sure your controller has a full charge when you start playing. Don’t switch controllers if you battery is running low, just connect it to a cable, and wait until you are on the bridge and done with saving before switching to another controller.

If this issue should occur, restarting the game without saving will cause it to try and download the cloud save next time you start it up. This may solve the issue, but will not work if you have managed to save since you got reset.

This bug isn’t the only one plaguing Helldivers players right now, though. On the Playstation forums, users of PS4 and PS Vita versions of the game have been reporting all kinds of issues with transferring saves and problems with online multiplayer. Obviously not all of these are caused by a dead controller battery, and there’s been no word on if they’ll be addressed in the new update.

We’ve reached out to Arrowhead for comment.
