Xbox One Not Getting Star Wars Battlefront Console Bundle

When Sony and Disney announced the special-edition PlayStation 4 console bundle themed around Star Wars Battlefront earlier this month, Xbox One fans might have wondered if they, too, were getting a similar system. They are not, Electronic Arts has now confirmed as part of a new blog post.

“The exclusive console for Star Wars Battlefront is limited to PlayStation 4,” Battlefront community manager Matthew Everett said.

The Battlefront PS4, which is themed around Darth Vader, also comes with a controller sporting a design based on the iconic Star Wars villain’s chest panel. In addition, the package features four digital Star Wars games and comes with Battlefront’s Deluxe Edition. Take a look at the premium package above.

Pricing for the Battlefront PS4 bundle has not been announced, and preorders are not yet open. In addition to the Battlefront PS4 bundle featured above, Sony will release a standard bundle that comes with a regular PS4, jet black DualShock 4 controller, a copy of Battlefront, and the four digital Star Wars games.

In 2011, Microsoft and LucasArts teamed up for an R2-D2-themed Xbox 360 console that came with a copy of Kinect Star Wars. Microsoft also released a metallic C-3PO Xbox 360 controller for this bundle.

  • New Fallout 4 Concept Art Revealed

New Fallout 4 Concept Art Revealed

Bethesda has published a few new pieces of concept art for Fallout 4, giving fans a closer look at the upcoming post-apocalyptic role-playing game that launches in just a few more months.

The art you see below comes from The Art of Fallout 4, an upcoming art book that Bethesda is working on with Dark Horse Comics. The book arrives on December 22 through Amazon and others for around $30.

“Our artists created 2x the game assets for Fallout 4 than Skyrim,” Bethesda said on Twitter. “Get a taste in our art book.”

The Fallout 4 release date is set for November 10 across PC, Xbox One, and PlayStation 4.

In other recent Fallout 4 news, Bethesda says it will not talk much more about the game’s story in the lead-up to launch. In addition, although Bethesda does have DLC plans in place for Fallout 4, the development team’s principal focus right now is on getting the core game out the door in November.

You can also enter a contest to win some Fallout 4 goodies, including the ultra-rare Pip-Boy Edition. In addition, Bethesda says it will announce the game’s PC specs sometime in October, and claims the title could go on to sell better than The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim.

  • Hyper Light Drifter Dev Finally Settles on PC/Mac Release Window

Hyper Light Drifter, a title GameSpot spotlighted as one of E3 2015’s highlights, has been delayed until “spring 2015.”

The vibrant top-down action game was originally scheduled for release in 2014, but has suffered multiple delays, first being pushed into late 2014, then going into release limbo.

Developer Heart Machine has now said in a Kickstarter update that it is ready to settle on a definite release window of “spring of 2016.” The studio also explained why it has taken so long to release the game.

“Release dates are a sensitive subject, and our attitude has been to take the time we need to do this right,” it said. “We have set a high standard for ourselves throughout the entire process, and will not compromise those to release a title before it’s ready. We’ve seen how that choice turns out time and time again. The final game will be far better for it.

“Game development is often an imprecise process of discovering how everything works together; the core concepts, the visuals, the audio and the interactive. Hyper Light Drifter is a big game, with a small handful of extremely dedicated people creating it.”

It continued: “It has required a massive amount of careful design considerations, extensive conversations about the story and world, engine and tools building, plenty of discovery, trial and error, working through a variety of game-breaking and time-draining bugs, reworking and cutting of systems, reshaping, and streamlining to feel like we can deliver on the original intention and vision of the project.”

The game will initially launch on Windows and Mac, followed “as quickly as possible by console” versions. The team is now working on completing the core game, while simultaneously developing the console versions, but has decided “not to withhold the PC version” while the others are completed.

“The game is rapidly nearing content completion. There’s balancing to be done with the economy/collectables, vital playtesting remains for specific regions and bosses, further cleanup for levels and remaining temp assets, some music to be composed, and bugs to be fixed,” it said, addressing why it was releasing in 2016 instead of 2015.

“Each of these components are being worked on in-tandem, and each requires a healthy amount of time to bring to a satisfying, polished conclusion.”

Hyper Light Drifter was also one the indie titles from PAX 2014 that GameSpot felt people should know about. Read our impressions of it, along with seven other promising games, here.

  • Steam Reaches 6,000 Games

    Steam Reaches 6,000 Games

Valve’s PC digital distribution storefront, Steam, has reached yet another milestone. There are now more than 6,000 games on the platform, up substantially from 3,700 less than one year ago.

As noted by NeoGAF, this figure does not count games have been delisted.

By comparison, EA’s Origin store counts just over 500 games in its library, while The Witcher developer CD Projekt Red’s DRM-free storefront, GOG, boasts more than 1,200 titles.

By Valve’s latest count, Steam had more than 125 million users, gaining 25 million in less than six months.

In September 2014, Valve released the “Steam Discovery update,” which introduces a range of features and functionality aimed at helping you filter through the flood of new releases. For more on that initiative, be sure to read GameSpot’s interview with Valve about it.

  • Mad Max PS4-Exclusive Content Revealed

With the Mad Max release date now just days away, Warner Bros. Interactive Entertainment has confirmed that the PlayStation 4 edition of the car-combat game is getting some “exclusive” content.

This content comes in the form of 12 hood ornaments for your car, seven of which are shown off in the video below. The DLC will be exclusive to PS4 through “at least” November 30, 2015, after which point it may come to Xbox One and PC, though Warner Bros. has yet to announce any specific plans.

The Mad Max PS4 exclusive hood ornaments include:

    • Longlooker
    • Wez Pads and Hawk
    • Humongous Mask
    • Feral Boomerang
    • Aviator Helm
    • The Furry Toadie
    • Bearclaw’s Mask

Mad Max is not the first multiplatform game with timed-exclusive content for PlayStation platforms. Others include Call of Duty: Black Ops III, Destiny, Batman: Arkham Knight, Hitman, and Tony Hawk’s Pro Skater 5.

PlayStation president Andrew House explained earlier this year that these types of exclusivity deals with multiplatform titles are especially important for the company this year because Sony’s lineup of first-party games is “a little sparse.”

Recently, Mad Max developer Avalanche Studios announced the game’s PC system requirements and published an interactive trailer that lets you choose your own mayhem.

It’s a particularly busy year for Avalanche, as the studio will ship another high-profile game–Just Cause 3–just three months after Mad Max, on December 1.

  • New Tony Hawk's Pro Skater 5 Trailer Showcases Revamped Visuals

Activision has released a new trailer for Tony Hawk’s Pro Skater 5, showing off the “all-star lineup of skaters” included in the game, and also offering another look at the revamped visual style.

The video, which you can watch below, includes names such as Chris Cole, David Gonzalez, Lizzie Armanto, and Leticia Bufoni, who discuss being in the game, as well as growing up playing the Tony Hawk games.

In early August 2015, Tony Hawk’s Pro Skater 5’s was given a new visual style that presents the game with a cel-shaded look. Speaking to GameSpot, developer Robomodo explained why it changed style just weeks before its release.

“It was essential that the game run at 60fps at 1080p,” said CEO Josh Tsui. “Even with 20 people skating online in the same session. We’ve achieved that, so now fans are seeing a better-looking game.

“It’s more over-the-top–the lighting has been improved and we’ve pumped up the game’s colors. Also, details like motion blur, depth of field, and outlining were tweaked, in the interest of improving the player’s focus on the skater and nearby obstacles and terrain.”

Tony Hawk’s Pro Skater 5 is due out for Xbox One and PlayStation 4 on September 29, with Xbox 360 and PS3 versions coming on November 10. The current-gen versions will be the only ones to offer the “seamless” online multiplayer mode that allows for 20 players to skate together at the same time.

  • Assassin's Creed Syndicate Ships on PC a Month After Consoles

Assassin's Creed Syndicate Ships on PC a Month After Consoles

Publisher Ubisoft will release Assassin’s Creed Syndicate on PC a month after it launches on consoles, to help ensure the build is shipped without major bugs or glitches.

The action adventure title, which follows the story of brother and sister assassins in Victorian London, is scheduled for launch on PC from November 19. That equates to about a month delay from the PS4 and Xbox One release date, which is October 23. Previously, Ubisoft had given the PC build a “Holiday 2015” release target.

While Assassin’s Creed Syndicate is principally designed at Ubisoft Quebec, duties for the PC port have been delegated to Ubisoft Kiev in Ukriane.

Sam Kovalev, production manager at Ubisoft Kiev, said the delay has been enacted to ensure the build ships with minimum problems.

“We have introduced several new improvements to our production pipeline and validation process, which allowed us to focus on polishing, stabilising and optimising the PC version very early on in the project,” he said, as quoted on the Ubisoft Blog.

“This has been one of the top priorities for the production team this year.”

The discussion around build quality of PC games, as compared to their console counterparts, has flared up in recent weeks.

In June, publisher Warner Bros released Batman Arkham Knight across Xbox One, PlayStation 4, and PC, yet the latter version was plagued with so many bugs that it was widely deemed unplayable.

Click on the thumbnails below to view the images in full-screen

Warner Bros. Interactive removed the version from PC games retailers, and is currently reworking the code so that it operates to a reasonable standard.

Assassin’s Creed Unity, released about a year before Syndicate, was notorious for carrying numerous bugs and glitches across all versions.

  • Madden NFL 16 Patch Coming Soon to Fix Bugs and More

Reviewers had plenty of nice things to say about Madden NFL 16, but the professional football game does have some bugs that are souring the experience somewhat. Thankfully, then, EA Sports has confirmed that it’s working on a new patch to clear out some of the issues–and the update should be coming soon.

Creative director Rex Dickson says on Twitter that EA is working to launch a new patch “ASAP.” He added that fans “won’t have to wait six weeks.” As Pasta Padre notes, past Madden games didn’t receive their first patch to respond to community feedback until mid-October or thereabouts.

Bugs to be addressed in Madden NFL 16’s upcoming patch include (per Pasta Padre):

    • Random encroachment coming out of the huddle
    • Severe ratings regression in Franchise
    • Ratings being boosted to absurd levels during Franchise games
    • Broken SuperSim that gives QBs a number of carries that rivals starting running backs
    • Custom playbooks not always appearing
    • Draft classes that come in too high in certain attribute categories

There’s no word if EA Sports will fix this funny bug that makes a defender hate the air. I kinda hope they keep this one in the game.

In GameSpot’s 8/10 Madden NFL 16 review, critic Miguel Concepcion wrote: “EA Tiburon has focused more on fans’ diverse play tastes as well as making this one of the most welcoming Madden games in recent memory.”

@_cgutierrez @pastapadre Yes. We will be getting this patch out ASAP.

    — Rex Dickson (@RexDEAFootball) August 24, 2015

@RickECooke Won’t be day one but as soon as possible. You won’t have to wait 6 weeks.

  • UK Retailer Game Cancelling Some MGS 5 Pre-Orders

UK Retailer Game Cancelling Some MGS 5 Pre-Orders

UK retailer Game is cancelling a growing number of pre-orders for the collector’s edition of Metal Gear Solid 5: The Phantom Pain, curiously blaming each one on a payment or delivery address problems.

GameSpot has obtained several emails from customers affected by the cancellations [images of two can be found below] with each person disputing Game’s reasoning for the cancellations.

One customer, who wished to remain anonymous, said an address issue instigated the cancellation. He claims to have placed his order in April, and checked on multiple occasions that Game both had the correct address and that a valid order had been logged into the system.

Another customer, who was told a payment problem brought about the cancellation, claimed there was easily enough money in the account to pay for order. The details attached to the Game account also appeared to be correct, he said, because the retailer shipped another product to him just days earlier.

It is unclear whether the pre-order cancellations are part of a wider issue at the retailer, or if a systemic problem has hindered the retailer’s online payment processes. GameSpot has contacted the corporation for clarification.

The collector’s edition of the game is currently unavailable to purchase at most other retailers.

Pictured above and below: Two emails from Game showing cancellation of orders and reasons cited

The Metal Gear Solid 5: The Phantom Pain collector’s edition is priced at £99.99 at Game, and includes the main game, a 24cm replica of Snake’s bionic arm, special steelbook packaging, and a behind-the-scenes Blu-Ray.

There are also a number of in-game items exclusive to the collector’s edition such as weapons, costumes, and XP boosts. A selection of these are tied to Metal Gear Online, which will launch after the main game is available.

In GameSpot’s Metal Gear Solid 5: The Phantom Pain review we awarded it a 10/10.

“When it comes to storytelling, there has never been a Metal Gear game that’s so consistent in tone, daring in subject matter, and so captivating in presentation,” said our reviewer. “The Phantom Pain may be a contender for one of the best action games ever made, but is undoubtedly the best Metal Gear game there is.”
