Xbox One "Gaining Momentum," Microsoft Says

The PlayStation 4 was the top-selling home console overall in the United States during August, but the Xbox One was no slouch, either. Microsoft has announced that the Xbox One “continued to gain momentum” in August, with sales in the United States rising 26 percent compared to August 2014.

Sony did not reveal a PS4 sales percentage increase for August 2015 compared to August 2014.

Xbox marketing executive Mike Nichols said in a statement that good times are ahead for Xbox One. Future Xbox One growth will be driven by a strong lineup of games, backwards compatibility for Xbox 360 titles, the New Xbox One Experience, and the new Xbox Elite controller, he said.

“We’re excited to further build on this momentum in the months to come,” he said.

This isn’t the first time a Microsoft executive has talked about the Xbox One “building momentum” as the console tries to catch up to the PS4, which has regularly outsold Microsoft’s console.

Speaking during Microsoft’s latest earnings presentation in July, CFO Amy Hood said Xbox’s strong performance during the last quarter, along with positive buzz at E3, is helping the Xbox One pick up steam.

“This progress, as well as the excitement we generated at E3–with Xbox exclusive gaming content and backwards compatibility–demonstrates the building momentum that exists within the Xbox ecosystem,” she said at the time.

  • Destiny: The Taken King Getting Its Own Soundtrack Release

Destiny: The Taken King Getting Its Own Soundtrack Release

Bungie will release an official soundtrack for Destiny: The Taken King, which will also include music from The Dark Below and House of Wolves, the developer has announced as part of its Weekly Update.

The Destiny: The Taken King soundtrack launches on September 15, the same day that the expansion arrives. The music was composed by Michael Salvatori, C Paul Johnson, and Skye Lewin. Veteran Destiny composer Marty O’Donnell, who recently settled a lawsuit against Bungie, is not listed as a contributor.

“As the World of Destiny continues to evolve, so must the music that brings it to life,” the composers said in a joint statement. “The heroic moment when you first grabbed Crota’s sword. The legendary fanfare that heralded the capture of Skolas for the Queen. The dark, regal overtones as Oryx enters our Solar System on a path to revenge. It has been our honor to score your new adventures. We hope you enjoy listening to the Taken King Soundtrack as much as we have enjoyed creating it. May it remind you of your bravest moments in a world imagined for heroes.”

Bungie has also shared an opening sample of the music players are greeted to when they boot up The Taken King. Listen to it here. Pricing for the soundtrack was not announced, but Bungie says it is “coming soon to a music download service near you…”

The Taken King is Destiny’s biggest expansion to date. It comes with a long list of new content and features, including the game’s biggest-ever raid, King’s Fall. For more on The Taken King, check out GameSpot’s guide for everything you need to know.

  • Metal Gear Solid 5 PC Mod Swaps Quiet's Model With Ocelot's, The Results Are Delightful

This is your spoiler warning for something that happens in Metal Gear Solid 5: The Phantom Pain that, ultimately, is pretty insignificant. Leave while you can.

Ok, so, there’s a point in MGS5 when you can frolic around in the rain with Quiet, the game’s barely clothed Sniper. It’s an odd moment that feels like Kojima’s homage to Tommy Wiseau’s The Room.

Thankfully, the stalwart modders on PC have injected some much needed humour into the scene by replacing Quiet’s character model with Revolver Ocelot’s. The result is a heartwarming moment when two former enemies take their burgeoning friendship and partnership to the next level.

We won’t go into detail about what happens, but it’s a genuine moment of endearment in a game that, otherwise, deals with some rather grim subject matter.

Once you’ve watched that, we highly recommend watching this video of what happens when you replace DD’s model with Ocelot’s. Chase those warm fuzzy feelings up with a nice shot of abject terror.

In GameSpot’s Metal Gear Solid 5: The Phantom Pain review we awarded the game a 10/10 score.

The Phantom Pain will grow next month with the release the game’s head-to-head multiplayer mode, Metal Gear Online for consoles. This multiplayer offering is coming in January 2016 for PC.

Earlier this year, Konami announced that it had started development on a new Metal Gear Solid game and was actively recruiting for the project. Meanwhile, series creator Hideo Kojima is expected to exit Konami, according to GameSpot’s sources.

  • Garry's Mod Sequel Announced With VR Support

Ten years after its debut, the developer of popular PC sandbox creation game Garry’s Mod has announced a sequel in the works.

In an interview with PCGamesN Garry Newman, creator of the original and founder of Facepunch Studios, was asked whether he’s consider increasing the price of Garry’s Mod, which is hugely popular but only costs around $10.

In his response, he revealed the team was working on a follow-up, so increasing the price of the original wouldn’t make sense.

“No,” he replied. “I mean, we’re kind of working on a sequel, so it’d be stupid to raise the price.”

Continuing, he revealed one of the features the studio is experimenting with for the follow-up: “It’s early days. We’re looking at having more VR stuff in it–that’s the big point of it.”

Despite the fact that he called it a sequel, Newman added it “won’t be called Garry’s Mod 2,” indicating that it maybe a large update for the original release, though this has not been confirmed.

Although Garry’s Mod launched as a free download, it proved to be very popular among modders and Machinima producers, since it allowed assets from other games to be imported and manipulated.

A paid version was of Garry’s Mod eventually released.

Newman, along with Facepunch Studios, has since released Rust, a survival game that tasks players with gathering resourcing and building structures. In February 2014, Newman said on Twitter that Garry’s Mod broke $30 million in sales, but that Rust, which hit Steam Early Access in December 2013, had already surpassed it.

  • Dota 2 Officially Reborn on Source 2, Numerous Changes Introduced

Valve has officially released Dota 2 Reborn, which introduces a significant overhaul of the MOBA’s interface, moves it to a new engine, and introduces Custom Games.

Dota 2 Reborn has been in the beta testing phase since June 2015, but the game’s official Twitter account has confirmed Valve is “rolling out the Reborn update over the next couple of hours.” Since matchmaking is now only available in this version of the game, upgrading to it is mandatory.

As previously explained, the new version of Dota 2 has a redesigned dashboard and the game is now running on Source 2, the latest version of the engine Half-Life 2, Counter-Strike: Source, and Team Fortress 2 run on.

“[Dota 2 Reborn] brings with it a new interface, new engine, and Custom Games,” Valve explained previously. “Everything in the dashboard has been redesigned utilizing a new UI framework and the engine that powers the game has been fully replaced.”

Some of the changes were detailed when the beta first launched and have been reproduced below.

    • Find Your Hero: It’s now easier to search and sort through heroes using filters. Apply a Carry or Support filter to see which heroes work well in those roles, then filter further by specific roles such as Nuker or Jungler. You can also increase the strength of a filter to see which heroes function especially well in a particular role.
    • Personalise Your Hero: Hero pages now let you quickly browse and try on every set and item available for that hero. If you find something you like, use the purchase button to buy directly from the Dota 2 store or from the Steam Marketplace. There’s also more information to help you determine if a hero is right for you, and a place to check out the community-written guides for that hero without needing to enter a match.
    • Demo Your Hero: Each hero’s page features a “Demo Hero” button, giving you quick access to a safe place to try out any hero’s abilities and practice last hitting. The hero will also wear any items you have selected in their Loadout, giving you a chance to preview any cosmetic item in-game, including items you don’t own.
    • Dota TV Expanding: We’re combining the best of DotaTV with the best of streaming. DotaTV, powered by Steam Broadcasting, will now provide detailed stats and graphs for you to browse while also supporting full tournament video production. These streams are capable of 1080p at 60 frames per second, while carrying an embedded data feed for stats and graphs, and are accessible from inside the Dota 2 client as well as on the web. Need to pause for a moment or just missed some action? You can pause and rewind anytime you want. You will also find third-party streams for that game directly inside the client.
    • Games To Watch: The Watch section now presents you with a mix of live tournament games, those featuring high-skill players, and matches your friends are playing or spectating. The new live match previews will also give you more information to help you decide which game to watch, including a detailed rundown of the state of the game, gold and experience graphs, and individual player stats.
    • Featured Tournaments: Heard of a big tournament in its final stages? You’ll want to check out the Featured section, where you’ll find all the information you need to jump right in and follow along, including the current bracket, upcoming games, participating teams, casters, and more.
    • Never Miss A Moment: During a live match, you will be able to hit the “Watch Later” button to quickly bookmark it, letting you visit the Replays section to watch the game when you’re ready. The Replays area will show you recently completed matches played by your friends, and the most popular replays rated by the community.
    • Manage, Share, And Discuss Matches: You will be able to add descriptions to your favorite replays and share them with friends. All replays will also have their own comments section, making it easy to discuss the best plays and most heartbreaking throws in any match big or small.
    • Guided Bot Matches: If you’ve got a friend who you’d like to introduce Dota to, but you balk at the teaching you’ll need to pass on to them beforehand, then we’ve got you covered. Striking a careful balance between providing enough information to be interesting, and not so much as to be overwhelming, these tutorials should be fun and educational for any beginning player, and give them a taste of what it’s like to play a full game of Dota.
    • Mechanics: If you have friends who haven’t played anything like Dota at all, and who find themselves struggling in the Guided Bot Matches, we’ve kept the ultra-simplified mechanics tutorials for them to fall back to. Here they’ll be able to focus just on the raw control mechanics of Dota.

Dota 2 was first released in 2013. Check out our Dota 2 review here, where it scored a nine out of ten.

  • Hellblade Dev Quells Fears Over Starting Project "Afresh"

Ninja Theory, the studio behind Heavenly Sword, Enslaved: Odyssey to the West, and DmC: Devil May Cry, has addressed concerns that it is starting “afresh” on its next major project, Hellblade.

On Thursday, the Cambridge studio said on Twitter that it had “retired” a vertical slice of the game that was recently shown to media outlets. The post, which has since been deleted, added that the studio has “started Hellblade production afresh”.

This triggered speculation that lukewarm reactions to the content may have led the team to return to the drawing board. In turn, this raised concerns over whether the game would still make its 2016 release date.

However, the company has since told GameSpot that it “absolutely” can still finish the build before 2017.

“Retiring our vertical slice and moving on into production is good news,” a studio representative wrote in a statement via email. “[Development] is not starting again, it is moving forward as expected.”

Hellblade will now go through full production, followed by the polish and balance. When asked about whether the game is still on track for release in 2016, GameSpot was told it “absolutely” is.

The studio has also made these clarifications on Twitter, indicating that it is no longer experimenting with ideas and has settled on a design blueprint.

Hellblade explores themes of mental health and features third-person combat. Ninja Theory’s stated goal has been to develop a triple-A video game experience on an indie budget by coming up with creative solutions for costly production elements such as motion capture.

The studio has said Hellblade will deliver “ninja-class melee gameplay, strong character stories, and a unique art vision.”

Sony has secured Hellblade as a timed PS4 exclusive. However, the game is also in development for PC.

  • How to Get a Rainbow Six Siege Beta Code Very Easily

Still need a key for the upcoming Rainbow Six Siege closed beta? There is now an easy way to get one.

Ubisoft has launched an interactive website called “Art of Siege,” where you can complete a series of “field training” exercises to score a beta key. Basically, the website teaches you how to attack and defend the game’s maps. Complete each part of the training and you’ll be rewarded with a beta key.

The Rainbow Six Siege closed beta officially begins on September 24 for PC, Xbox One, and PlayStation 4. You can also guarantee yourself a spot in the beta by preordering the game.

The full game, meanwhile, is slated to launch on December 1. This is slightly later than previously expected, as the game was originally due to launch on October 13 before its delay last month.

Ubisoft has high hopes for Rainbow Six Siege, as the publisher said back in May that the game has the potential to become the company’s best-selling FPS ever, surpassing Far Cry 4. At the time, Ubisoft CEO Yves Guillemot said the game’s replayability “will be key to the game’s success.”

  • Preacher Picked Up for Full First Season By AMC

Preacher Picked Up for Full First Season By AMC

The adaptation of acclaimed comic book Preacher has been picked up for a full series by AMC. A pilot for the show–executively produced by Seth Rogen–has already been shot, but now the channel have committed to an entire first season.

Rogen tweeted the news on Wednesday, September 9, and incuded a teaser poster for the show:

Preacher is coming to AMC! @evandgoldberg @SamCatlin123! The beginning is nigh!!! pic.twitter.com/xVgqYrkEK9

    — Seth Rogen (@Sethrogen) September 9, 2015

AMC subsequently confirmed the story to Deadline, elaborating that the season would have a ten episode run. Rogen initially stated that the show would debut in May 2016, but this date was subsequently removed from his tweet and has not been officially announced by the channel.

Rogen has developed the adaptation alongside his regular writing/directing partner Evan Goldberg, with whom he collaborated on such comedies as This is the End, Superbad, and this year’s controversial The Interview. Breaking Bad writer/producer Sam Catlin wrote the script for the first episode, and will act as showrunner throughout.

Preacher was created by Garth Ennis and Steve Dillon, and first published in 1995 by the DC imprint Vertigo to huge acclaim. It tells the story of a smalltown preacher who is possessed by a supernatural creature and controlled by opposing forces of both good and evil. Captain America star Dominic Cooper will take on the title role in the new series.

There have been numerous attempts to bring the story to the screen by different studios and filmmakers over the past 15 years, including Miramax, Columbia Pictures, and director Sam Mendes, but budgetary issues had halted all previous developments.

  • How to Play NHL 16 Five Days Early

NHL 16, the next entry in EA Sports’ acclaimed professional hockey series, doesn’t officially arrive until September 15, but you can start playing the game right now if you meet a few requirements.

A free, 10-hour trial for NHL 16 is now available on Xbox One by way of EA Access. This is the full game, not a demo. In addition, all of your in-game progress will carry forward if you decide to buy the game (retail or digital) when the 10 hours are up.

EA Access members can also save 10 percent on NHL 16 (and all EA digital content), meaning they can buy the game for $54 instead of $60.

NHL 16 has been embroiled in some amount of controversy. The game was originally supposed to feature Chicago Blackhawks stars Patrick Kane and Jonathan Toews on its cover. But Kane was dropped from the cover (and all marketing events for the game) in the wake of an ongoing sexual assault investigation.

In other recent NHL 16 news, EA Sports and Sony have teamed up for a special-edition PlayStation 4 bundle that comes with a system and a copy of the game. This bundle is exclusive to Canada.
