Weekly Recap: PS4 Outsells Xbox One Again, But Xbox One Has Best Exclusives

    THE BIG STUFF:

PS4 Comes Out on Top in NPD’s August 2015 US Sales Report: The PlayStation 4 was yet again the best-selling console in the United States during August, Sony announced this week as part of the NPD report. However, the Xbox One was no slouch, as sales rose 26 percent compared to August 2014.

Xbox One Exec: No Doubt We Have Best Exclusives This Holiday: According to Microsoft’s Kudo Tsunoda, Sony and Nintendo can’t stack up to Microsoft this holiday when it comes to exclusive content. “I think if you look at our competition, there’s no way that people can really stack up with our exclusive content,” he said.

    THE OTHER STUFF:

DomiNations, the new mobile strategy game from Big Huge Games and Brian Reynolds has now reached 12 million downloads in five months. BHG also reports that people are playing an average of 4-6 times per day, logging about 36 minutes every day. That’s pretty incredible.

Did you know that Kid Cudi auditioned for Star Wars Episode 7? He totally did. No word on which role he auditioned for, but sadly, he didn’t land the part.

I auditioned!! That whole experience alone was WILD. Happy I was able to get in the room and try! Blessed! https://t.co/fWF1U0sUNb

“My dog stepped on my controller and deleted my Destiny gun.” That’s a pretty common piece of feedback Bungie receives from people asking to have their guns reinstated, the developer said on the latest PlayStation Blogcast. Thankfully, then, Destiny’s new Taken King expansion will let you recover weapons you accidentally deleted.

    Have a great weekend!

Free Madden 16 PS4/Xbox One Update Makes Players Look More Lifelike

EA Sports has released a free player likeness update for Madden NFL 16, changing the looks of more than 180 players in the pro football game. The update actually arrived yesterday, September 10, to coincide with the NFL season-opener between the New England Patriots and Pittsburgh Steelers.

The patch, available on PlayStation 4 and Xbox One (there was no mention of Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3), updates players’ faces to look more true-to-life. In the case of San Diego Chargers free safety Eric Weddle, the changes are dramatic, as he now has the epic beard he sports in real life.

  • Super Mario Maker Update Addresses the 9-Day Wait for Item Unlocks

Super Mario Maker launches on Wii U today, and those picking it up may not be subjected to the long, nine-day wait to unlock all of its building tools they were expecting.

As previously announced, Super Mario Maker’s level editor doesn’t offer all of its tools right out of the gate. Instead, by playing for at least five minutes, you’ll unlock new tools the following day. This occurs over the course of nine days, meaning it’ll take more than a week to get access to everything–and that’s assuming you’re able to put in those five minutes every single day. (It could be much longer if you can’t play daily or don’t resort to changing your system’s date.)

While this system apparently remains in place, there is now an alternative, faster route for unlocking everything. According to a NeoGAF post, a new patch has been released which, among other things, states, “Condition(s) for increasing the amount of usable parts (in the level editor) were added.”

The exact mechanics for how new content is unlocked remain unclear. Multiple players claim they’ve unlocked the content you would have had to wait a day to get after waiting between 15 minutes and two hours. NeoGAF member Cbajd5 suggests placing a lot of items (such as blocks) into a level, which should prompt a notification about the unlocked content. Despite the message indicating it will be there the following day, it’s actually made available after a short wait.

We’ve contacted Nintendo to get an official explanation for exactly what requirements need to be met in order to unlock new content, but it hasn’t yet offered an answer. We’ll update this story with any details it shares.

  • Nvidia Bashes Apple TV, Crossy Road in Promoting Its Own Apple TV-Style Device

Nvidia Bashes Apple TV, Crossy Road in Promoting Its Own Apple TV-Style Device

Nvidia has taken a shot at Apple and its newly announced Apple TV device in a new promotional push for its own Apple TV-like device, the Nvidia Shield.

Among the announcements at Apple’s event on Wednesday was the newest iteration of the Apple TV. Beforehand, it had been reported that the new device would make a major push into gaming. And while gaming was part of the presentation, it seemed clear that it isn’t the only focus. Soon after the event concluded, Nvidia sent out an email to the press boasting about how the Shield stacks up in an unusually direct manner. It also claimed, “The new Apple TV reaffirms the category of next-gen smart TV consoles–which Nvidia invented with the Shield Android TV.”

The new Apple TV and its remote

The company has now taken its comparisons one step further, publishing a blog post on its website comparing the Shield and Apple TV. While you’d expect it to be pro-Shield, the post doesn’t shy away from bashing Apple’s product, both subtly and not-so-subtly.

“If you’re already an Apple TV user, we don’t necessarily expect you to run out and buy the new Apple TV,” the blog states. “While many of the features are impressive, the basic offerings may not justify the $200 pricetag [Ed. Note: There’s a $150 option, too] over what you already own. There’s a more important question however. Do you really want to be locked into that walled garden?”

Later, it says, “The choice is yours. With two high-end streaming options on the table, it’s decision time. While the new Apple TV is a definite improvement over its predecessor, the fact remains that would-be streamers and cord-cutters also crave truly high-end experiences.”

This is all accompanied by a flowchart (pictured in part below) intended to help you decide what device is right from you. If you’re not into games or streaming, it suggests more traditional solutions. But when it comes down to “wanting the best of the best,” it suggests the Shield, unless you decide you’re “fine with Crossroads,” which misspells the name of a game (Crossy Road) featured during the Apple TV presentation this week.

You can see the full blog post here.

The Shield Nvidia is promoting here is the company’s Android-powered, TV-connected microconsole. The Shield name was used for two previous projects: a portable games console (which was essentially a screen connected to a controller) and a gaming-centric tablet. This latest version of the Shield launched earlier this year and is capable of 4K streaming, as well as streaming games over the Internet (with Nvidia Grid) or a local network (GameStream, letting you play games on your computer).

The Shield is available now for $200, while the new Apple TV is coming in October for $149 (32 GB) or $199 (64 GB).

  • Destiny's Crazy "Mayhem" Multiplayer Mode Now Available to Everyone

Destiny‘s Taken King multiplayer preview event expands today with the release of Mayhem mode for the game’s Crucible component. The mode became available at 10 AM PDT / 1 PM EDT today.

In Mayhem, you’re basically a superhero. Your grenades, ammo, Super ability, and melee moves recharge very quickly. In addition, Bungie said previously that the mode was designed to feel more like a “party game” that you can play to blow off steam rather than take too seriously.

“As the name suggests, [Mayhem is] absolutely out of control,” we wrote in our preview from E3. “General shooter rules need not apply; Gameplay generally comes down to hiding for the few seconds until your super recharges, then sprinting after enemies to blow them away.”

Mayhem may not be around forever, however. Design lead Lars Bakken said in August that Bungie plans to deploy the mode with the intention of gathering feedback from fans. “We’re gonna put it out there, we’re gonna see what people think,” he said at the time.

This new mode, along with the neutral capture-the-flag mode, Rift, are available in Destiny’s Crucible for everyone as part of a one-week Taken King preview event. When The Taken King launches on September 15, Mayhem and Rift, along with the other new PvP content, will be available only for people who buy the expansion.

  • Check Out Fable Legends' Circus Performer-Turned-Archer in Action

Lionhead has published the latest “Heroes of Albion” gameplay video for Fable Legends, this one focusing on the character Flair. She’s a circus performer-turned-archer who appears to be quite agile.

As you’ll see in the video below, Flair can shoot three arrows at once. She can also light these arrows on fire, or even toss tar ahead of her and then light it on fire from afar with a blazing arrow. Another move lets her essentially breathe fire to keep her enemies at bay.

Flair’s most interesting ability, however, might be her invisibility power. She places a firework on the ground and then runs off to face enemies; if she gets into trouble, she can immediately teleport back to the firework and become invisible for a brief period. The invisibility power also extends to teammates. Flair can also shoot the firework to make anyone standing nearby (but not herself) invisible for a brief moment.

Like other Fable Legends characters, Flair also has a dodge move, but hers is different. She cartwheels out of battle and can kick people in the face as she’s getting away.

Fable Legends is due to launch this year on Xbox One, though a specific release date has not been announced. The game is also coming to PC (not through Steam), but Microsoft has not yet said if it will launch on the same day as the console edition, with which it will support cross-platform play.

Whenever it’s released, Lionhead has high hopes for Fable Legends. The developer thinks the game will enjoy up to a 10-year lifespan, staying interesting and relevant through lots and lots of DLC.

  • Street Fighter 5 Adds Middle-Eastern Fighter Called Rashid

Street Fighter 5 Adds Middle-Eastern Fighter Called Rashid

Capcom is adding a new Middle-Eastern character to the cast of Street Fighter 5 fighters called Rashid.

The reveal was made at Games15, a video game show currently being held in Dubai, where Capcom’s Yoshinori Ono introduced the character. Although details about Rashid’s abilities and play style haven’t yet been revealed, it seems he will have the ability to control wind. In the lead up to this reveal, Ono Tweeted pictures of Ryu and Ken blocking and being hit by gusts of wind.

Interestingly, a supposed leak from earlier this year stated one of the upcoming character announcements for Street Fighter 5 would be called Rashid. This reveal lends some weight to reports that other two characters are a Brazilian fighter named Laura and an Indian character called Zen.

An image of the character was posted on Twitter by KO Alliance and can be seen below.

All Games Beta has a second, better look at Rashid.

An off-screen video of the announcement can be seen below.

Sony has confirmed it will have 19 titles playable at its Tokyo Game Show booth this year, one of which is Street Fighter 5, a console exclusive for PS4. It’s likely more information about the character–and perhaps others–will be provided there.

GameSpot’s hands-on with Street Fighter 5 at Gamescom revealed the latest iteration offers more of a gameplay reinvention than you might expect.

Recently, Capcom detailed the business model it is adopting for Street Fighter 5, and it’s quite a departure from the previous game. Players will only ever need one disc, and future gameplay DLC will be available for free provided you earn enough in-game currency.

  • Dragon's Dogma Series Sales Reach 2.3 Million Units

Capcom’s role-playing game franchise, Dragon’s Dogma, has reached a new sales milestone. The publisher has announced that the series, which debuted in 2012, has now sold 2.3 million units.

“The Dragon’s Dogma franchise has become one of Capcom’s successful series,” the publisher said in a statement. “Cumulative sales were more than 2.3 million units at the end of June 2015.” A new version of the first game, Dragon’s Dogma: Dark Arisen, was released in 2013.

This new franchise sales number was embedded in a press release about Dragon’s Dogma Online, a newly released free-to-play RPG that saw more than 1 million downloads in its first 10 days. The game is currently available in Japan for PlayStation 4, PlayStation 3, and PC. A release in the west has not been confirmed.

Capcom said the early success of Dragon’s Dogma Online means the game is well on its way to becoming “one of Capcom’s new core titles in its online business.”

In other news about the Dragon’s Dogma series, Capcom this week confirmed that a PC edition of Dark Arisen is in development.

  • Nintendo's Sells 7 Million Amiibo Toys in the US Alone

Nintendo has now sold more than 7 million Amiibo toys in the United States alone, the company revealed as part of the NPD Group’s August sales report. The “toys-to-life” figures, which are compatible with a number of Wii U and 3DS games, launched in June 2014 and have become something of a phenomenon.

On a worldwide basis, Nintendo had sold 14.7 million Amiibo toys by the end of June 2015.

By comparison, Activision has sold more than 250 million Skylanders toys worldwide since the franchise debuted four years ago. In all, the Skylanders series has generated $3 billion for Activision.

In other Amiibo-related news, Nintendo announced at the end of August that Shovel Knight, the eponymous lead character of action-platformer Shovel Knight, is getting his own Amiibo later this year. This marks the first time a third-party game has gotten its own Amiibo.
