  • Need for Speed Is 30fps on Xbox One/PS4 and Lots More Info Revealed

Need for Speed Is 30fps on Xbox One/PS4 and Lots More Info Revealed

The upcoming Need for Speed “full reboot” will run at 30fps on Xbox One and PlayStation 4, developer Ghost Games has announced. In a new FAQ, the studio explained that frame rate is “incredibly important” for any driving game, and the new Need for Speed is no different.

“We always look to maximize the game technology with the platform technology for the experience we’re building, which is why the game will run at 30fps on both Xbox One and PlayStation 4,” it said. “By doing this we ensure that your gameplay experience remains incredibly smooth and allows you to experience the high speed, adrenaline fuelled gameplay that you’ve come to expect from the Need for Speed series.”

No mention was made of a frame rate for the PC edition, which was recently delayed to 2016. The extra time was necessary, however, to “increase the visuals that we can deliver on PC.”

Frame rate for Need for Speed was just one detail that Ghost Games confirmed. The studio also said it has no plans for any paid DLC or microtransactions whatsoever. Fans can, however, look forward to “free content updates” throughout the game’s lifespan.

In addition, Ghost Games reiterated that players will need a constant Internet connection to play Need for Speed. Users won’t, however, need a paid Xbox Live Gold or PlayStation Plus subscription to play single-player. But of course, a paid membership is required to take part in multiplayer activities.

Ghost Games also said it is currently investigating manual transmission, split-screen, and wheel support for Need for Speed. On the subject of split-screen specifically, the studio explained, “We wanted to maximize the visual fidelity of the game with the focus given to the full-screen experience.”

Finally, Ghost Games confirmed that players can have up to five cars in their garage at once and that they will not be able to play as police. For more, check out the full FAQ.

The Need for Speed release date for Xbox One and PS4 is set for November 3 in North America. A closed beta will be held on consoles in the coming weeks to ensure the game is ready for launch.

  • Super Smash Bros. Wii U/3DS Getting Super Mario Maker Stage

Super Smash Bros. for Wii U and 3DS are getting a new stage based on the recently released level-builder game, Super Mario Maker, and from the looks of the first gameplay trailer, it’s going to be bananas.

The level will be highly dynamic, as Nintendo says its layout changes every time you play. What’s more, if players destroy blocks, the Super Mario Maker “hand” may appear to re-animate them. Watch the video below to see the new Super Smash Bros. stage in action.

The Super Mario Maker-inspired stage arrives on September 30 for Wii U and 3DS. It will cost $2.50 on each platform, while players can also buy both versions together for $3.50.

This level adds to Super Smash Bros.’ existing extensive lineup of paid DLC, including stages, characters, and costumes.

Super Smash Bros. for Wii U has sold more than 3.8 million copies, while the 3DS edition has shifted in excess of 7 million units, for a combined total of close to 11 million copies.

As for Super Mario Maker, it launched on September 11. GameSpot’s review scored the Wii U game a 9/10.

“The game won’t necessarily turn you into the next Shigeru Miyamoto, but you can almost feel a little bit of that magic rubbing off every time you upload a new creation,” critic Justin Haywald wrote in his review.

  • PS4's Bloodborne Sells 2 Million

PlayStation 4 role-playing game Bloodborne, developed by the team behind Demon’s Souls and Dark Souls, has reached a new sales milestone. The game has now sold more than 2 million copies since launch in late March 2015, Sony announced today as part of the Tokyo Game Show. This is up from 1 million in April.

The 2 million figure counts copies sold on disc and digitally through the PlayStation Store.

Also today at TGS, Sony and From Software announced that Bloodborne’s first expansion pack, The Old Hunters, will launch in November. For lots more on the $20 DLC, check out this post.

GameSpot’s Bloodborne review scored the game a 9/10.

“In death there is life, and in blood, there is redemption,” wrote reviewer Kevin VanOrd. “More hyperbole, yes, but for a game this theatrical, only hyperbole will do.”

  • Destiny: The Taken King Review in Progress

Two weeks ago, I spent the better part of two days playing through Destiny’s newest expansion, The Taken King. And since Bungie released its sci-fi shooter in September of last year, a lot has changed.

By nature, Destiny requires a huge time commitment–weekly cooperative strikes, daily story missions, and a pervasive bounty system all propel you in the pursuit of better gear and, in turn, a better character. So based on the 14 hours I spent with my Hunter in this new environment, I’m not ready to attach a complete opinion to The Taken King. But many of its contents already stand out.

There are new story missions. There are new cutscenes. There are three new character subclasses, and a whole new world to explore in the rings of Saturn. But despite all of this, The Taken King stands out among Destiny’s expansions not because of what it adds, but what it transforms. You level your character differently, find more relevant loot drops, and have a comprehensive quest log to guide you every which way. The recent Patch 2.0 laid the foundation for this evolution–The Taken King builds something more on top.

Much has been made of the new experience-based progression, and for good reason. This is the expansion’s flagship change. In Destiny’s first year, many players spent dozens of hours climbing the ranks through a traditional experience system. But at level 20, they hit an invisible wall. And this barrier came in the form of the Light system. Unlike the earlier hours of Destiny, reaching the level 30 cap required the completion of specific tasks in a math-based structure, tying character progression to a very specific number. If you didn’t max that Light number out, you didn’t rank up. And if you didn’t rank up, you couldn’t participate in the best cooperative content Destiny had to offer.

From what I’ve played, it feels as if I can choose to spend my time however I want now. This may change past the 20 hour mark, but of the time I spent so far, I felt free to explore whatever world I chose. I completed strikes knowing I would see some kind of worthwhile reward at the end. I returned bounties and in return, gained a satisfying pool of experience points in my pursuit of the new level 40 cap. And then I hit that point, and continued to feel satisfied with the time I spent playing.

Light is now just an indicator of how good your gear is, and isn’t reliant on specific quest chains or pieces of gear. From the time I played, I almost always swapped out my old gear for a new piece of loot after strikes, marking a drastic departure from the post-20 grind of Destiny’s first year. To be clear, there are still high-level quests that require a considerable Light level, and Destiny regulars will return to find The Taken King replete with challenges. Of the time I’ve played, I found difficult quest chains with powerful rewards, and I can see the expansion catering to veterans and newcomers alike.

Both groups have ample story missions to fight through, and new enemies to fight therein. The Taken are more varied than opponents of Destiny’s past, with abilities that change the flow of firefights, and hierarchies that dictate who you shoot first, and when you choose to do so. The strike bosses aren’t just bullet sponges anymore, and deliver more strategy to cooperative players than the nemeses of the past year. I can’t say whether they’ll become repetitive to the point of exhaustion in later playthroughs, but further time will yield an answer.

Like many Destiny players over the last week, I’ve spent a considerable amount of time playing through the new Crucible maps and new game modes. Each lends a new dynamic to Destiny’s PvP content, from the constant super abilities of Mayhem, to the tactical maneuvers of Rift, which tasks you with extracting a Charge to destroy the enemy’s base. The maps themselves have a good balance of verticality and long sight lines, extending Bungie’s tenure as a creator of well designed multiplayer arenas. I’m expecting these to provide dozens of enjoyable hours more.

But as of now, I’ve only spent a minimal amount of time in a game that requires much more. The Taken King adds new factors to the Destiny equation, and removes just as many. The story, firefights, loot, and leveling all coalesce into something bigger than the sum of their parts, and something different than Destiny has been for the last year. The King’s Fall raid releases three days after release, so I and my GameSpot team will be preparing for that. I also plan on working through quests with low level characters, to give me a better overall view of the quest system for anyone that might be playing Destiny for the first time. I’ll be spending many of my waking hours with The Taken King over the next few days, and I’ll have a more informed opinion on the other side.

  • PlayStation 4 Price Drop Announced for Japan

Sony has for the first time officially dropped the price of its PlayStation 4, with the popular system’s RRP in Japan now cut to 34,980 yen.

The price cut will go into effect on October 31, according to Sony Japan executives speaking at the Tokyo Game Show. This decrease represents a price drop of just about 12 percent.

When converted to US currency, it means the 2013 launch price, which was about $334, has dropped to $292.

However, there is no indication that this price drop will trigger similar discounts across Europe or the US. PlayStation 4 sales have far surpassed Sony’s internal expectations since it shipped in late 2013, but some analysts believe its weakest market is now Japan. This price drop could be considered a localised plan to stimulate sales in the region.

  • PS2 Classics Ape Escape, Dark Chronicle Rated For PS4 Release

PS2 Classics Ape Escape, Dark Chronicle Rated For PS4 Release

Video game classification board PEGI has rated PlayStation 2 titles Ape Escape 2, Twisted Metal: Black, and Dark Chronicle for release on the PlayStation 4.

The release of these titles have not yet been officially announced by Sony.

Although Sony offered PS3 owners the option to download select PS2 classics in lieu of the hardware’s lack of backwards compatibility, this feature has not yet expanded to PS4.

The unearthed ratings naturally suggest more classics may be released in the future, but Sony has not yet indicated an intention to continue releasing PS2 titles as an ongoing strategy.

At E3 2015, Microsoft announced the Xbox One would support Xbox 360 backwards compatibility through software-enabled emulation. Responding to this, Sony’s Shuhei Yoshida confirmed Sony has no plans to implement a similar solution to allow PS3 titles to be played on the PS4

Pictured: PEGI’s classifications of PS2 games on PS4

“The technology involved must be very challenging,” he said.

The PS4 does offer some kind of backward compatibility by way of paid streaming service PlayStation Now. Asked if a native solution could be added, Yoshida indicated it was unlikely.

“I don’t think we will change our approach,” he said. “The PlayStation 4 doesn’t have backward compatibility.”

“Backward compatibility is hard,” Yoshida explained. “I won’t say we’ll never do it, but it’s not an easy thing to do. If it was easy we would have done that.”
