  • Spider-Man Spinoff Film The Sinister Six May Still Happen

Spider-Man Spinoff Film The Sinister Six May Still Happen

The sheer number of superhero movies being released over the next few years means that it’s easy to forget some of the casualties that have occurred along the way. One of those was The Sinister Six, a spinoff from Sony’s Amazing Spider-Man movies, that was postponed indefinitely when the studio struck a deal with Marvel Studios to reboot the Spider-Man films.

Now writer/director Drew Goddard has revealed that he believes his script for the movie could still fit into the Marvel Cinematic Universe. As he explained in an interview with io9, his Sinister Six was very much a standalone story.

“My vision of that movie was a summer annual,” he said. “So you didn’t have to worry about continuity. It was just, ‘We take Peter, put him on an adventure, we put him back in his life.’ I intentionally wanted a movie that didn’t have to worry about mythology and continuity.

“It was important to me to make a movie that could stand on its own. So the good news is, you know, it slots in very well to any plan anybody ever wants. We just need to let a couple years go by, I think.”

Goddard has himself worked with Marvel on their Netflix hit Daredevil, and while an appearance in 2016’s Captain America: Civil War and the standalone 2017 movie are to be the webslinger’s first cinematic appearances for Marvel, it’s clear that The Sinister Six is not necessarily dead.

The Sinister Six are a group of supervillains, each of them one of Spider-Man’s arch-enemies. Originally organised by Doctor Octopus, they first appeared in The Amazing Spider-Man Annual #1 in 1964.

The closing scene of 2014’s The Amazing Spider-Man 2 set up the spinoff film; however, its underwhelming box office led to the deal that would allow Spider-Man to appear in Marvel’s own films. Despite the disappointment of the postponement, Goddard explains that as a fan it made perfect sense.

“I love that you get to see Spider-Man in Marvel movies,” he said. “I think that’s a great thing. I’m on board with that decision because as a fan that’s what I want. So who knows what the future holds? This is Hollywood, man, you’ve gotta play the long game.”

Afro Samurai 2 Hits PS4/PC, With Xbox One Edition Coming Later

Redacted Studios’ unlikely sequel Afro Samurai 2: Revenge of Kuma is available now on PlayStation 4 and PC as a download on both platforms. The game is also coming to Xbox One, but players on that system will have to wait a little while long, as it doesn’t release on Microsoft’s console until October 9.

The game out today is described a “Volume 1.” Two additional chapters will be released later down the road, each with their own unique story, characters, combat systems, and music. Speaking of music, RZA of the Wu-Tang Clan produced the Afro Samurai 2 soundtrack. Watch the launch trailer below.

Many of the original Afro Samurai developers returned for the sequel, including franchise creator Takashi Okasaki.

“Having worked on the original Afro Samurai video game, I am thrilled that we were able to collaborate with the same creative team once again to bring this vision to life,” lead producer Dave Robinson said in a statement. “Having original creator Takashi Okasaki, music director RZA, as well as some of the original acting talent, like Phil Lamar, involved has been a blessing and we’ve been humbled by their commitment to this franchise. It’s been a labor of love for all involved and we really think that fans worldwide will truly appreciate and love where we have taken this story.”

Volume 1 is available to buy for $15, while all three can be purchased in a bundle for $35 on PC and $45 on PS4. PlayStation Plus members can buy the bundle for $35.

  • Xbox Boss Finds Console Wars Debate "Distasteful"

Microsoft’s head of Xbox, Phil Spencer, has said he feels the ongoing console-versus-console-feud raging rampant in online forums, comment sections, and social networks is something he finds “distasteful.”

Speaking in an interview with GameSpot, Spencer was asked, in light of his success shifting the focus back to games on the Xbox One, what he’d like to tackle next and what keeps him up at night.

“I’ve said before, the one thing that I probably find a little distasteful in the discourse around games is the divisiveness that people try to build between platforms,” he replied.

“It becomes more about what piece of plastic I own than what games I’m playing. It becomes more about somebody else failing than the things I love succeeding. I don’t think that’s a good place for our industry.”

The Xbox exec noted that not everyone is partaking in their arguments but, nevertheless, it is a part of the gaming industry that he is actively interested in combating.

“I know that’s not everybody, and it’s easy to find the pockets of that vitriol and I kind of think that that is gaming, but I’m not going to embrace that. I’m going to actively push against that,” he said.

Spencer’s affable nature and willingness to directly praise his competitors has become one of the defining characteristics of his leadership. In the past he has congratulated Sony on the success of its PS4 exclusive Bloodborne, shown support for Nintendo’s new CEO, and brokered deals with Oculus.

This, Spencer says, doesn’t get in the way of his mission to make Xbox One the best video game platform it can be.

“People sometimes will make fun of me that I mentioned Sony or I mentioned Nintendo,” he said. “It’s not to placate anybody or make them think I’m some kind of good guy.

“My job isn’t really to keep you from buying something else. My job is to make you proud of what we offer, and to give you an enjoyable experience with the product we have. That’s 100% of what I’m focused on.”

Elsewhere in the interview Spencer said he believes Halo has the same staying power as entertainment juggernauts such as Star Wars and Spider-Man, but requires managing to ensure it isn’t overexposed.

  • Wolfenstein: The New Order 2 Teased By Voice Actress

Wolfenstein: The New Order 2 Teased By Voice Actress

The voice actress who played a central character in Bethesda’s 2014 shooter Wolfenstein: The New Order has hinted strongly that a sequel to the Machine Games-developed title is on the way. Alicja Bachleda-Curus, who played B.J. Blazkowicz’s friend Anya Oliwa in The New Order, said in an interview with Polish media that she’s working on a “second one” that could launch in 2017.

“I’m working on a video game, first part of which I have already made,” she told Poland’s TVN, as reported by Eurogamer. “Now we’re making a second one, which will take two more years. I played this game as a child. I was very happy when I got to the point where I could shoot Hitler.”

Anya in the first New Order

Bethesda has not announced a sequel to The New Order, but this isn’t the first time the subject has come up. In June 2015, The New Order creative director Jens Matthies said Machine Games has a “very clear idea” for a sequel, which he would “love” to make if given the opportunity. According to Matthies, whether or not Machine Games gets to make a sequel depends on the financial success of the first game.

Bethesda has not shared sales numbers for The New Order. During its launch month, May 2014, it was the fourth best-selling game of the month in the United States, behind MLB 14: The Show, Mario Kart 8, and Watch Dogs. For more on The New Order, check out GameSpot’s review.

We have contacted Bethesda for comment on this report and will update this post with anything we hear back.

  • Batman: Arkham Knight PC Will Be Available Again "in the Coming Weeks"

The PC version of Batman: Arkham Knight will be available in the “coming weeks,” according to publisher Warner Bros. Interactive Entertainment.

The new release period was stated in a press release detailing upcoming DLC for Rocksteady’s third Arkham title. A line towards the end of the document mentions the PC version will be re-released soon, but doesn’t specify exactly when.

The PC version of Batman: Arkham Knight was pulled from store shelves and sales of the title on digital platforms such as Steam were suspended. This was due to significant graphical and performance bugs and glitches.

“We want to apologize to those of you who are experiencing performance issues with Batman: Arkham Knight on PC,” publisher Warner Bros. said at the time. “We take these issues very seriously and have therefore decided to suspend future game sales of the PC version while we work to address these issues to satisfy our quality standards.”

In the days following the release of Arkham Knight on PC and the surfacing of its numerous technical issues, it was revealed the port was developed by a small external team while principal developer Rocksteady focused on the console versions.

Rocksteady released a statement saying it would work on remedying the port’s problems and, as promised, a patch addressing many of its issues has since been released. The update fixes frame rate hitches, optimises VRAM usage, improves GPU performance, cleans up textures, and more.

Batman: Arkham Knight’s next major expansion is Catwoman’s Revenge, which is set after the events of the main game and places players in the feline boots of Catwoman “as she seeks her revenge on Riddler.”

  • The Last of Us 2 Was Prototyped But Naughty Dog Focused on Uncharted 4 For Now

Naughty Dog’s creative director, Neil Druckmann, has said although a prototype for The Last of Us 2 was made, the sequel is not currently in development at the studio.

Speaking to Official PlayStation Magazine UK, Druckmann addressed recent statements from voice actor Nolan North, who stated The Last of Us 2 was in development.

“I can say that was kind of a surprise for us for him to say that,” Druckmann said. “I was like ‘Oh he knows more than we know [about] what we’re doing next.’ We joked about it afterwards during shoots and stuff.”

According to North, who voices Nathan Drake in Naughty Dog’s Uncharted series and David in The Last of Us, the sequel was in development alongside Uncharted 4, but this does not seem to be the case.

Instead, the studio prototyped it–along with a number of other ideas–before ultimately being pulled into the Uncharted 4 development project and dedicating itself to that.

“When Bruce (Straley, co-director) and I moved over to Uncharted 4, we were brainstorming ideas for The Last of Us 2 with characters; ideas for TLOU 2 with Joel and Ellie; ideas for a sci-fi game; ideas for a fantasy game, and building prototypes for each one of those ideas,” he explained.

“And just as we were getting close to settling or narrowing that list down, we were asked to work on Uncharted 4.”

On the subject of returning to those prototypes, Druckmann said there’s “a part of me that’s really looking forward to going back to those things,” but added that he has “no cycles left in my mind even to be thinking about that right now.

“So, I guess [Nolan North] was kind of right in that we were working on stuff, but we don’t know what we’re doing next and we won’t know until probably a few months after we finish Uncharted 4.”

In March 2015, Sony delayed the released date for Uncharted 4 to spring 2016. Druckmann and Straley, said the delay was necessary to ensure the PlayStation 4 game matches the high expectations from fans.

Sony has revealed the multiplayer beta for Uncharted 4 will launch on December 4.

  • Xbox One Boss Phil Spencer to Attend Brazil Game Show

Xbox One Boss Phil Spencer to Attend Brazil Game Show

Phil Spencer, who leads all gaming efforts inside Microsoft, will attend the 2015 Brazil Game Show. The show runs October 8-12 in Sao Paulo, and this marks Spencer’s first-ever appearance at the event.

“Looking forward to joining Brazilian Xbox gamers and game devs at my first Brazil Game Show. Hope to see you all there,” Spencer wrote on Twitter.

There is no indication yet regarding the nature of Spencer’s involvement in this year’s show. During last year’s Brazil Game Show, Microsoft announced a special-edition white Halo Xbox One bundle.

Xbox is just one of the 2015 Brazil Game Show’s participants. Others include PlayStation, Ubisoft, Activision, Warner Bros., Electronic Arts, Razer, Capcom, and YouTube, among others.

The Xbox One was outsold by the rival PS4 in August 2015, but system sales were up 26 percent compared to August 2014. Overall, Microsoft says the Xbox One is “gaining momentum” as it looks forward to the holiday, a period in which the company believes it has the strongest lineup in all of gaming.

  • "My Game Is Tomb Raider Meets Guitar Hero But Epic."

"My Game Is Tomb Raider Meets Guitar Hero But Epic."

Crest developer Eat Create Sleep has launched an “indie pitch generator,” which is sure to keep you busy for a little while today. Simply press the “make a new pitch” button and a new concept will appear.

Some of my favorites so far: “My game is Tomb Raider meets Guitar Hero but epic”; “That game is like Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2, but without gameplay”; and “My game is Final Fantasy VII meets Rock Band but with permadeath.” Try it for yourself right here. You can then share your results on Twitter.

Eat Create Sleep has also launched a free mini-game, Eat Create Sleep Adventures, that parodies what it’s like to be an indie game developer. The game is playable in your browser, via Unity WebGL, right here.

Specifically, it tells the story of the fist year of development on Eat Create Sleep god’s game, Crest. Watch a trailer for the game below, which Eat Create Sleep admits is “shameless advertising” for Crest. The game is available now on Steam Early Access for $5.

Eat Create Sleep has also marked down the Crest Supporter Edition by 15 percent to $6.79. This comes with an additional free key to share with a friend.

Why do any of this? Eat Create Sleep says the pitch generator and mini-game are part of their effort to try to bring attention to Crest, specifically for its extra modules. Should the team get enough funding, the modules to be released in the months ahead include: October (City States), November (Faith), December (Exploration), and January (Ancestor Worship).
