  • Hearthstone Devs Nerf Warsong Commander

Hearthstone developer Blizzard will make a significant edit to one of the game’s most divisive minions, the Warsong Commander, in a bid to counter the growing dominance of the Patron Warrior strategy.

In what could be the most significant card change yet since Hearthstone left beta in March 2014, the Warsong Commander is set to lose her unique ability to give charge to any minion with 3 or less attack. Following an upcoming patch for the game, the minion’s new ability will read: “Your Charge minions have +1 Attack.”

Such a change will singlehandedly weaken the potential of the Grim Patron minion, which has 3 attack and duplicates itself whenever damaged. Many Hearthstone competitors who play as the Warrior tend to play Warsong Commander and Grim Patron together, thereby creating a small mobile army in a single turn. This strategy, widely known as “Patron Warrior”, can be made even deadlier with Warrior-specific cards that deliver damage to the entire board (as shown in the video above).

Grim Patron was added to the Heartstone in April, via the Blackrock Mountain adventure add-on, and since then the Patron Warrior has become a dominating deck in Hearthstone.

The meta shifted towards this control strategy even further after it was discovered the Frothing Berserker, another Warrior-exclusive card which gains +1 attack each time any minion takes damage, has remarkable potential in the Patron Warrior deck. This is because a Warsong Commander can give it immediate charge, while the war machine of Grim Patron can then buff the Berserker’s attack way beyond thirty damage. That results in instant kills, regardless of opponent’s health.

It remains a possibility that Warrior fans will still play Frothing Berserker and Grim Patron following the upcoming nerf. Players have discovered numerous strategies to capitalise on both minions. However, the change to Warsong Commander will mean that Patron Warrior decks will have lost virtually all their burst, which should significantly limit its effectiveness.

Writing on the official Hearthstone forum, a Blizzard community manager going by the name ‘Zeriyah’ said that the studio chooses to nerf cards “only when they are completely necessary.”

She wrote: “The direction of gameplay and the metagame should be defined by our players, and as the meta is evolving, many different types of decks can emerge.

“Going forward, we will continue to stand by our stance that we will only make adjustments to cards when we feel it is completely necessary and allow the injection of new cards into the game help our players define what the meta evolves into. In the case of Warsong Commander, we felt this change was necessary to help expand both future design space and to stand by our overarching game philosophy that battles between minions and fighting for board control is what makes Hearthstone fun and compelling.”

  • Silent Hills Cancellation Makes No F**king Sense, Says Guillermo Del Toro

Pans Labyrinth, Hellboy, and Pacific Rim director Guillermo Del Toro has discussed the experience of working on Silent Hills with Metal Gear creator Hideo Kojima, saying that many of the ideas they came up with for story later appeared in games such as The Last of Us, giving him confidence they had something special.

Speaking to horror site Bloody Disgusting, Del Toro said the game would have been “remarkable.”

“We had a great experience and had great story sessions with hundreds upon hundreds of designs,” he said. “Some of the stuff that we were designing for Silent Hills I’ve seen in games that came after, like The Last of Us, which makes me think we were not wrong, we were going in the right direction, The thing with Kojima and Silent Hills is that I thought we would do a really remarkable game and really go for the jugular.”

In April 2015, Konami confirmed it had cancelled plans to develop Silent Hills, a move which Del Toro believes “makes no f**king sense.”

“We were hoping to actually create some sort of panic with some of the devices we were talking about and it is really a shame that it’s not happening. When you ask about how things operate, that makes no f**king sense at all that that game is not happening. Makes no f**king sense at all.”

Although Konami initially declined to comment on the cancellation of Silent Hills, it later released a statement.

“Konami is committed to new Silent Hill titles,” it said, “however the embryonic Silent Hills project developed with Guillermo del Toro and featuring the likeness of Norman Reedus will not be continued.”

It added: “In terms of Kojima and del Toro being involved, discussions on future Silent Hill projects are currently underway, and please stay tuned for further announcements.”

In addition to Del Toro and Kojima, it has been revealed that renowned manga creator Junji Ito–widely believed to be one of the masters of Japanese horror–was also working on Silent Hills.

Del Toro has said he doesn’t plan on making another game, but is still in touch with Kojima.

  • Preacher TV Show Will Be Different From Comic, Here's How

Preacher TV Show Will Be Different From Comic, Here's How

For many comic book fans, one of the most hotly anticipated shows of 2016 is Preacher. After years of development, the acclaimed comic is finally being adapted for AMC, produced by Seth Rogan and his regular filmmaking partner Evan Goldberg. Now Rogan has spoken about what fans can expect from the show, and how it will differ from the books.

Rogan was asked about progress on Preacher during an interview for Crave Online to promote his latest film, Steve Jobs. “It’s coming along great,” he said. “The writers are in Los Angeles in a big room, writing away, trying to plan the series. We’re trying to plan the whole season before we start shooting and writing it. So our hope is to start filming in February and I think we’ll start airing sometime next summer, basically.”

Rogan was also asked about how the story was being broken down, and whether each episode would represent one issue of the comic. “No, we are changing the specifics of how the narrative is unfolding,” he explained. “A lot of the building blocks we are not changing, a lot of characters we’re keeping, but we want to make a show that if you’re a fan of the comic, you don’t know what to expect.”

“There’s some things that even Garth [Ennis, co-creator of the comic book] will argue, is quick to admit that we probably should not even attempt to put on television. There’s some characters, we’re talking about maybe we combine these two into one person.

“But to us the tangential element is one of our favorite things. The fact that it does go off into these other worlds and explore these other characters, I mean that’s something that we wholeheartedly intend on indulging in because it’s one of the best parts about the comic. Just the massive tapestry of f**king weirdos.”

Preacher was created by Ennis and Steve Dillon, and first published in 1995 by the DC imprint Vertigo to huge acclaim. It tells the story of a smalltown preacher who is possessed by a supernatural creature and controlled by opposing forces of both good and evil. Captain America star Dominic Cooper will take on the role in the new series.

  • Witcher 3 Hearts of Stone Limited Edition Delayed in North America

Customers who pre-ordered the limited edition of The Witcher III: Wild Hunt – Hearts of Stone expansion in North America will have to wait a bit longer to receive their physical copies of the game. CD Projekt Red has apologised for the delayed release of the limited edition on its forums, which affects special boxed editions at GameStop stores “all over America.” The developer has said the delay was caused by “logistical problems” that will affect the delivery of the games for “several days” after its release date.

The forum post goes on to apologise for the inconvenience, and that the developer is working with GameStop to resolve the situation. In the meantime, users can still purchase the game digitally if they want to play it on its launch date.

The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt – Hearts of Stone expansion contains over ten hours of new content, including new characters, monsters, a unique romance, and a new storyline that features player choice.

Hearts of Stone was very well-received in GameSpot’s review (although not as well as the original base game, which earned the elusive ten out of ten), with editor Mike Mahardy praising the game’s clever dialogue and storytelling, engrossing quests, and the depth of the game’s themes.

  • Get Free Halo 5 REQ Pack By Checking Out New Interactive Site

Get Free Halo 5 REQ Pack By Checking Out New Interactive Site

With just two weeks to go before its release, Microsoft has launched a new interactive website for Halo 5: Guardians. The website features five videos each for Master Chief and Spartan Locke, which dive into the game’s galaxy-changing story. Locke believes Chief is a traitor, while Chief think he’s a freedom fighter.

Watch all 10 videos and you’ll earn a special REQ Pack for multiplayer. Mine came in the form of a Vengeance Assault Rifle Skin, though it’s unclear if this is the reward for everyone who watches all the videos. They are less than 10 seconds long, so it won’t take you too long to zip through them all.

Halo 5 launches on October 27 exclusively for Xbox One. Copies of the game have leaked early.

Although development on the base game is complete, 343 Industries continues to work on post-release content, including December’s Forge mode and lots of free DLC maps. In other recent news about the game, Microsoft has announced more information about Halo 5’s REQ system and microtransactions.

In addition, work has begun on Halo 6.

  • Dead Island 2 Devs Open New Studio, Release "Mammoth" Game

Dead Island 2 Devs Open New Studio, Release "Mammoth" Game

Three former Yager developers have left the Spec Ops: The Line and Dead Island 2 studio to create their own independent outfit, which they are calling InBetweenGames. The developer’s first game is called The Mammoth: A Cave Painting, which is inspired by prehistoric cave-paintings; watch a trailer for it below.

You don’t have to wait to play A Cave Painting, as it’s available now for free for iOS and Android devices or through your browser.

Looking beyond A Cave Painting, the Berlin, Germany-based InBetweenGames says it’s working on multiple prototypes for the studio’s “first big release,” which is penciled in for fall 2016. No further details are available at this time, but the studio says, “We’re not doing pixel art nor puzzle platformers.”

InBetweenGames was founded by Yager veterans Isaac Ashdown and Jan David Hassel, who worked on Spec Ops: The Line and Dead Island 2, as well as 15-year industry veteran Rafal Fedro.

Earlier this year, Deep Silver removed Yager as the developer for Dead Island 2. On the InBetweenGames website, the studio repeatedly refers to Dead Island 2 as “cancelled,” though Deep Silver has said it remains in development.

“While we have Spec Ops: The Line under our belt we still feel like we have something to prove,” Hassel said in a statement. “We want to make games and give them to you. That’s what we’re here for. That didn’t really work out in AAA the last couple of years for us. So we will have a go at this indie thing and don’t hold back intending to punch above our weight class as hard as we can. It will either work out or it will go up in flames. But it will be fun. You should watch.”

The release of A Cave Painting comes just days after Ubisoft announced its own prehistoric game with mammoths, Far Cry Primal.

“Haha… straight coincidence!,” Fedro said. “I was really surprised when I’ve seen announcement trailer. We have this running joke that we are the ‘trend-setters,’ but of course that’s not true. To be able to ship it in 2016–they must have been working on it for at least one year now. It’s an interesting direction Ubisoft is taking for Far Cry series.”

You can read more about InBetweenGames on their newly launched website.

  • Star Wars Battlefront Prioritizes Frame Rate Over Resolution

DICE has spoken out to address the technical performance of Star Wars Battlefront in the wake of criticism about the game’s frame rate and resolution. Technical director Johan Andersson says on that the sci-fi shooter prioritizes frame rate over resolution to achieve the best possible overall experience.

Responding to criticisms about how Battlefront’s beta runs at 900p on PlayStation 4 and 720p on Xbox One instead of full 1080p, Andersson said, “Frame rate and fidelity is indeed king; don’t want to sacrifice it for resolution. But a choice each game team does.”

A previous technical analysis of Battlefront’s beta revealed that both PS4 and Xbox One are targeting 60fps. However, this frame rate can dip during some particularly intensive encounters.

DICE is not the first studio to speak out about the importance of frame rate. Final Fantasy XV director Hajime Tabata previous said “frame rate is more important than resolution” for the Square Enix RPG.

The Battlefront beta started on October 8 and runs through October 13. It is being held across Xbox One, PlayStation 4, and PC, and is free and open to everyone; use these download links to start playing right now.

Are you already playing the beta? How are you finding it? Let us know in the comments below.
