  • Bungie Answers Destiny 2.0.1. Questions About Microtransactions, Rewards, More

This week saw the release of Destiny’s 2.0.1 update, which added microtransactions, nerfed shotguns, brought back the Iron Banner multiplayer event, and more. It was a large update and players have voiced some concerns and questions about microtransactions and Iron Banner rewards, among other things. Now, Bungie has responded to some of the most frequently asked questions about Destiny 2.0.1.

In the latest Bungie Weekly Update, the developer said another Destiny update will introduce “more frequent and more powerful” Legendary rewards for Nightfall missions. This comes after Destiny players complained about the rewards being far too underwhelming, given the challenge, something Bungie agrees with.

In addition, Bungie stresses that it has no intention of selling King’s Fall consumable buffs for real-world money. “We’re not doing that,” Bungie said.

Players found references to such items in the Destiny files, but Bungie says they were never intended to be sold for Silver. “Ultimately, the team decided that they didn’t have a place in the game, and cut them from the experience. You’re seeing some dust and echoes from the cutting room floor,” it explained.

In other Destiny news, Bungie has announced that Destiny’s King’s Fall raid is getting a hard mode earlier than expected, though the Trials of Osiris event has been delayed due to a bug.

Read on for the full Q&A regarding Destiny’s new 2.0.1 update.

    “Sunbreakers?”

Indeed, we hear you. We’re looking at the data, as well. It’s too early to dig in and make any promises. We’ll talk more soon, once we get a full picture.

“Why am I not getting my Iron Banner rewards?”

Iron Banner has been both a test of skill and your best gear, as well as a way to get a new set of gilded armor and weapons. Legendary items won’t drop until you reach Rank 2 with Lord Saladin, and the pool expands as you continue to climb the ranks. The premiere items we believe you’ll want to obtain are also available for purchase from Lord Saladin himself. Subsequent Iron Banner events will include additional pieces of gear.

“What are you doing about the lag in Iron Banner?”

If you’re manipulating network traffic, or if your connection is so bad that you’re unintentionally compromising the experience of other players, we’ll issue a temporary restriction from all Crucible activity. The first round of these restrictions went live yesterday. The second wave is happening as we speak. As always, we start small to ensure our tools are properly calibrated, and widen the net as we become more confident that we’re ensnaring the actual perpetrators of shenanigans. Fair Warning: We will also permanently ban repeat offenders! When Trials of Osiris is live, we’ll be utilizing the same policy and technology. Play nice, and please make use of our in-game reporting tools should you come across a player you believe needs some extra time and attention from our team. Our matchmaking engineers are also monitoring the overall health of the matchmaking pool writ large with an eye toward making improvements across the board. You’ll be hearing from that team about their progress in the weeks to come.

    “How about those Nightfall rewards?”

There is another update inbound as soon as next week that will deliver more frequent and more powerful Legendary rewards to the Nightfall loot tables. We’ll save the specific numbers for the Patch Notes. And, of course, the best reality about the nature of those rewards will be found in your feedback.

“Someone datamined files that prove Tess will be selling King’s Fall consumables! You said you wouldn’t do that! Why are you doing that!?”

We’re not doing that. The files in question were actually first uncovered some time ago, well before the launch of Eververse Trading Company. They weren’t ever intended to be sold in exchange for Silver. What you’re seeing are remnant files for Three of Coins or Moldering Shard like items that would have been available from Xûr. Ultimately, the team decided that they didn’t have a place in the game, and cut them from the experience. You’re seeing some dust and echoes from the cutting room floor. Files that get datamined aren’t official sources of news, though we understand why they are intriguing.

“Why did you change the economy for Strange Coins and Weapon Parts?”

In Year 2, we took steps to streamline and simplify the economy for players, with hopes that providing more direct paths to gear and the stuff you needed to upgrade that gear would just be more satisfying across the board. Changes to economy of the game are made in the interest of preserving the value of the items in your inventory and ensuring that you have good uses for the things you’re saving. Weapon Parts, specifically, have been particularly vexing. Some players use a LOT of Parts, whereas others use almost none. Still, we are very aware that this is a choke point for some players, and further adjustments may be in order. In all cases, we’re still watching our reports and listening to feedback, and we will continue to react to how things are going.

  • "Highly Likely" That DICE LA Will Make Its Own Game, EA Says

"Highly Likely" That DICE LA Will Make Its Own Game, EA Says

DICE Los Angeles, the support studio founded in 2013 that has worked on Battlefield 4 DLC, will likely make its own game someday. That’s according to EA Studios executive Patrick Soderlund, who says in a new interview that it’s “highly likely” that it’ll happen, but maybe not soon.

“When you start something new, sometimes it’s actually good for them to test the waters, try a couple of expansion packs,” Soderlund told IGN. “You’ve got to have a good idea for a great game before you can make a game, and that takes time.”

Soderlund went on to say that DICE LA has “done a great job” with Battlefield 4, helping turn things around after its rocky launch in October 2013. “They’ve built great expansion packs, but more importantly they’ve created an identity for us in LA,” he explained. DICE LA continues to support Battlefield 4, most recently with the community-driven free expansion pack coming later this fall.

For his part, EA CEO Andrew Wilson described the team at DICE LA as a “really, really passionate group of people.” He said he has “no doubt” that the studio will eventually build a game of its own.

There is no indication yet regarding what DICE LA’s first game might be or when it would be released. The studio appears to already be hiring for this project, however, as a Senior Concept Artist is one of seven open positions posted to the developer’s careers page.

  • Star Wars Will Have a Female Director, Lucasfilm President Promises

Star Wars Will Have a Female Director, Lucasfilm President Promises

While characters like Princess Leia and Queen Amidala have become iconic figures in the Star Wars universe, it has been one very much dominated by men behind the scenes, with predominantly male directors, writers, and producers. With Kathleen Kennedy becoming President of Lucasfilm in 2012, this has started to change.

In an interview with Fortune this week, Kennedy spoke about the increased number of women she has working with her, and the possibilities of a female director taking on a future Star Wars film. “Fifty percent of our executive team are women,” she said. “Six out of eight of the people in my story group are women. I think it’s making a huge difference in the kind of stories we’re trying to tell.”

As for whether a Star Wars movie could be directed by a woman at some stage, Kennedy was emphatic that this would become a reality. “It is going to happen,” she promised. “We are going to hire a woman who’s going to direct a Star Wars movie. I have no doubt.

“On the other hand, I want to make sure we put someone in that position who’s set up for success. It’s not just a token job to look out and try to find a woman that we could put into a position of directing Star Wars.”

Nevertheless, Kennedy did admit that finding women who were interested and excited about being involved with the Star Wars universe was not nearly as easy as finding men. “It is interesting because I have a huge number of men who call me constantly and tell me how much of a Star Wars fan they are, and how much they want to get involved in anything to do with Star Wars. I don’t have a lot of women who call and have those conversations with me.

“If we do want to bring a woman in to direct a Star Wars movie, we want to make sure that it’s somebody who’s passionate and really, really wants to do a Star Wars movie. We don’t want to talk somebody into it.”

The next film in the franchise, Star Wars Episode 7: The Force Awakens, opens on December 18, 2015. It is directed by JJ Abrams and stars John Boyega, Daisy Ridley, Adam Driver, Oscar Isaac, Max von Sydow, Harrison Ford, Carrie Fisher, and Mark Hamill.

  • Fallout 4 Video Shows Off Intrepid Wasteland Reporter Piper

Bethesda has released new gameplay footage for Fallout 4, but tucked it into a video for the latest update to Fallout Shelter. The video, which you can see below, shows Piper, a new Legendary Dweller added to the mobile game.

Piper will also make an appearing in the main Fallout 4 game. Skip to the 30-second mark and you’ll see her talking to the game’s protagonist, discussing whether he (or she, depending on your choice) supports the news. It seems Piper is a journalist for Public Occurrences, which provides Wastelanders with a “hard look at the truth.”

Piper is unlocked as a Fallout 4 character by playing the iOS version of Fallout Shelter. The update adds a new game mode and other content, such as a free Fallout 4 character for those playing on iOS.

Take a look at all the new content and changes introduced in the new Fallout Shelter update here.

The Fallout 4 release date is set for November 10 across PC, Xbox One, and PlayStation 4. Bethesda recently published the latest episode in its “S.P.E.C.I.A.L.” video series. The first image and control details for the PlayStation Vita version available through Remote Play were also discussed.

  • Nathan Fillion Asked Halo 5 Devs to Make Him Look More Handsome

Nathan Fillion Asked Halo 5 Devs to Make Him Look More Handsome

By actor Nathan Fillion’s own admission, his Halo 5: Guardians character, Edward Buck, looks more handsome than he does, despite being based on his real-world face. This was no accident. In an appearance on Jimmy Kimmel Live, Fillion says he asked 343 to make his character model more good-looking. The developers obliged, and, as you’ll see in the video, Fillion is quite pleased with the result.

Fillion recalls traveling to the 343 office in Seattle where he sat in a 36-camera rig to have his face captured from every angle possible to be recreated in the game. “I said, jokingly, ‘Can you make it look like I’m just a little bit better-looking than I actually am?’” That’s exactly what they did, and, now that new images and trailers for Halo 5 have been released, people have definitely noticed the difference.

“Now, people are on Twitter going, ‘Hey, that there’s a guy in Halo 5 who looks just like you, only better-looking,’” he said.

Check out the closeup image below and decide for yourself.

Fillion is no stranger to the Halo series, as he most recently did voicework for Halo: Reach and Halo 3: ODST, playing the character Buck. In Halo 5, Buck is a member of Spartan Locke’s Firetime Osiris, tasked with hunting down Master Chief.

The Halo 5 release date is set for October 27 exclusively for Xbox One. In other recent news about the game, 343 has announced its launch day multiplayer playlists and revealed all the achievements. In addition, the game is now available to pre-load, while Microsoft has announced a New Year’s Eve-style countdown celebration event for Halo 5.

GameSpot’s 8/10 Splatoon review said the game is “the antithesis to the modern shooter, but it primarily deserves recognition for what it is, not what it isn’t.”

“It’s a wonderful game with charm and inventive ideas that work and pave the way for new experiences in an otherwise stale category of games.”

  • Witcher 3 Will Try to Tax You for Using Money Exploits

CD Projekt Red already addressed The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt’s infinite money exploits involving cow hides and pearls. But now, players who benefited from the get-rich-quick scheme are being approached by a local tax man who wants them to pay up. Taxes–you can’t even escape them in video games.

YouTube channel WhatsMyGame posted a video that highlights the encounter. During the main Hearts of Stone mission, the Deputy Tax Enumerator from the Revenue and Customs department approaches you to discuss a “Hides & Pearls Tax.” He’ll ask you the following questions:

    • “Have you at any time engaged in the wholesale trade of rawhide in the White Orchard area?”
    • “During the current fiscal year, have you engaged in the acquisition of bivalves with the express intention of selling the pearls therein?”

The tax man even cites a specific statute: “Whoever purchases goods at an unseemly low price to take advantage of the seller’s ignorance shall be subject to a fine equaling 200 percent of the earnings from any such transaction.”

You can admit to tax evasion and pay a penalty, or you can deny any wrongdoing. Choose that option and you’ll be commended by the tax man; he’ll even give you a “Taxpayer in Good Standing” diploma, which he recommends you frame and hang in honor.

The cowhide exploit involved killing cows and collecting their hides. Players quickly discovered that if they mediated for a certain period of time, cows in one early area of the game would respawn every time they woke up. Thus, players could stock up on cow hides to their heart’s content and then sell them for a nice fee. CD Projekt Red addressed this by deploying the Bovine Defense Force Initiative, which took the form of a hulking, ultra-powerful nasty monster who kills anyone trying to cash in.

The Witcher 3’s first paid expansion, Hearts of Stone, arrived this week. GameSpot scored it a 9/10. The next add-on, Blood and Wine, is coming sometime in the first half of 2016. This is a somewhat wider window than before, as it was originally announced for a Q1 2016 release.

  • Last Chance to Get Free Xbox One Tomb Raider Definitive Edition

Today, October 15, is the last day that Xbox Live Gold members can download a free copy of Tomb Raider: Definitive Edition for Xbox One. On October 16, the game–a remastered version of the 2013 reboot–will return to full price. You can queue up your download right now from the Xbox Store online here.

The game is free as part of Microsoft’s Games With Gold promotion. Today also marks the final day that Xbox 360 owners can download a free copy of Metal Gear Solid V: Ground Zeroes. On Xbox One, Games With Gold titles are yours to play as much as you’d like, provided your membership stays active. Xbox 360 games, on the other hand, can be played forever, regardless of membership status.

Replacing Tomb Raider: Definitive Edition tomorrow, October 16, will be Telltale’s The Walking Dead for Xbox One. That game is also the freebie that Xbox 360 owners can pick up on that day.

GameSpot’s Tomb Raider: Definitive Edition review scored the game an 8/10.

“The exquisite visual design is so breathtaking that I continually found myself staring at the scenery instead of pushing onward,” our reviewer said. “Tomb Raider is a great reinvention of this enduring franchise that made me eager to see where Lara goes in her future.”

Microsoft has not yet announced November’s lineup of free Games With Gold titles.
