  • Nintendo's Next Mario & Luigi RPG Set For December Release

Mario & Luigi: Paper Jam Bros, Nintendo’s relatively under-marketed RPG, is scheduled to ship across Europe and Australia in December. The game was originally revealed during Nintendo’s E3 2015 Direct presentation, but little has been seen of it since.

Known in Japan as Mario & Luigi RPG: Paper Mario MIX, it is the fifth game in the RPG series, and puts a twist on the formula by crossing over the traditional Mario universe with the Paper universe. Players will be able to take control of Mario, Luigi, and Paper Mario.

“Characters from the Paper Mario universe, including Paper Mario, Princess Peach, Bowser and Toad, jump out of a book and into the world of Mario & Luigi, resulting in hilarious and dangerous hijinks,” Nintendo says on the game’s product page.

As is the case in the previous Paper Mario games, players must solve puzzles and complete quests to bring down Bowser, who has gathered an army of foes.

“Paper Mario has unique abilities, such as turning into a paper aeroplane, slipping through cracks or creating copies of himself,” Nintendo says. “Use all three characters together to successfully pull off trio moves and trio attacks, and continue onwards on your adventure.”

Paper Jam Bros. also introduces the new Paper Craft Battles, which lets players take out enemies using the power of dance.

“Craft battles see our heroes take part in rhythm-based events in order to power a giant papercraft and use it to defeat giant papercrafts from Bowser’s army.”

  • Avatar, Sin City Directors Bringing Acclaimed Manga Battle Angel: Alita to Big Screen

Avatar, Sin City Directors Bringing Acclaimed Manga Battle Angel: Alita to Big Screen

James Cameron has been working on the sequel to his sci-fi blockbuster Avatar for several years now, as well as suggesting that there may be no fewer than three further films to come in the series. This has left a question mark over his other potential projects, most notably his adaptation of Japanese manga classic Battle Angel: Alita. Now Cameron has confirmed that the film is still to happen, but with a different director.

Variety have reported that Cameron will hand the project to Sin City and From Dusk Till Dawn director Robert Rodriguez, but will still produce the movie, now titled Alita: Battle Angel. “Robert and I have been looking for a film to do together for years, so I was pumped when he said he wanted to do Battle Angel,” Cameron said in a statement. “He’s very collaborative and we’re already like two kids building a go-kart, just having fun riffing creatively and technically.

“This project is near and dear to me, and there’s nobody I trust more than Robert, with his technical virtuosity and rebel style, to take over the directing reins. We’re looking forward to learning a lot from each other while we make a kick-ass epic.”

Rodriguez added: “Getting to work from Jim’s terrific and visionary script while learning the cutting edge techniques he’s pioneered is a master class in filmmaking. It’s an honor to explore the world of Alita along with Jim and Jon [Landau, also producing], whose films have impacted me for decades.”

Battle Angel: Alita is the futuristic story of an amnesiac cyborg who becomes a deadly bounty hunter. It was first published in 1990, and ran for nine volumes until 1995. In 1993, a two-episode anime version was produced, which adapted the first two volumes of the manga.

In 2009, Cameron spoke about how Avatar‘s pioneering effects work could pave the way for the Battle Angel: Alita movie. “It’s good to have done Avatar first, before Battle Angel,” he told MTV at the time. “Because the tricky scenes are where you’re blending live-action photography, stereoscopic photography, and CG.

“We have a very good script and we’ve done a lot of production design. We’ve done about a year of production design and we’ve put together an art reel that shows the arc of the film.”

  • Former Activision Owner Vivendi Buys Stakes in Ubisoft and Gameloft

Vivendi, the French media conglomerate that two years ago sold its controlling stake in Activision Blizzard, has returned to the games business by purchasing shares in two publishers.

As detailed by The Washington Post, Vivendi has purchased a 6.6 percent stake in Ubisoft for 140 million euros, and spent an additional 20 million euros to acquire a 6.2 percent holding in Gameloft. The acquisitions have resulted in a 14 percent rise in share prices for Ubisoft, while Gameloft’s share value increased by 17 percent.

In July 2013, Vivendi sold its 85 percent stake in Activision Blizzard for more than $8 billion, with the corporation claiming at the time that it wanted to focus on the TV and music portions of its business. There were some signs of tension within the executive circle at the company.

Court filings revealed that Activision CEO Bobby Kotick was nearly fired during the purchase of Activision-Blizzard from Vivendi. This was reportedly due to his refusal to approve any sale of Vivendi’s shares that didn’t include his investment group.

“I really wonder who’s going to fire him,” Vivendi’s former chief executive Jean-Francois Dubos asked in an email at the time.

“Myself, happily. Tomorrow if you want,” responded Philippe Capron, Vivendi’s then chief financial officer and Activision chairman.

In a statements released by Ubisoft and Gameloft, both have expressed an intention to “remain independent.”

Ubisoft’s upcoming slate of video game releases includes Assassin’s Creed Syndicate and Rainbow Six Siege. It recently revealed Far Cry Primal, a spin-off that takes its first-person shooter series to the Stone Age. On October 14, the Assassin’s Creed movie began production and is due for release on December 21, 2016.

Gameloft, meanwhile, publishes mobile titles based on properties such as CSI and Ice Age. The company was founded by Michael Guillemot, who is also co-founder of Ubisoft.

  • Godzilla and King Kong Monster Movie Team-Up Confirmed

Godzilla and King Kong Monster Movie Team-Up Confirmed

It was rumoured last month, but now the onscreen team-up of Godzilla and King Kong has been confirmed. Producers Legendary and Warner Bros have issued a statement revealing that the two companies would be creating an “an epic, new shared cinematic franchise” for these famous movie monsters.

The companies have mapped out an initial trio of films that will form part of this new universe. The first, Kong: Skull Island, is due to begin production early next year, and will arrive in 2017. Godzilla 2, the sequel to 2014’s blockbuster Godzilla, will follow in 2018. The two creatures will then meet in 2020, when Godzilla Vs Kong is released.

In the statement, Thomas Tull, the CEO of Legendary, said: “Audiences really responded to Godzilla. Today, I’m excited to reveal that film was only the beginning of an epic new entertainment universe. As a lifelong fan of these characters, I’ve always wanted to see the ultimate showdown, and today we’re pleased to be announcing that and more.”

Kevin Tsujihara, Chairman and CEO of Warner Bros, added: “We enjoyed tremendous creative and commercial success with Godzilla. It’s great to be able to revisit these characters and help create a franchise with so many creative possibilities for filmmakers. Fans love these big, globally iconic films and it doesn’t get any bigger than this.”

It was also revealed that other classic monsters from Japanese studio Toho may make an appearance in future movies, including Rodan, Mothra, and King Ghidorah.

In September, Legendary moved Kong: Skull Island from previous distributors Universal to Warner, with whom they had worked on Godzilla. Skull Island will star Tom Hiddleston, Samuel L. Jackson, and John C. Reilly, and is due in March 2017.

  • Watch Zelda Music Performance on Stephen Colbert’s Late Night TV Show

Watch Zelda Music Performance on Stephen Colbert’s Late Night TV Show

Last night’s episode of The Late Show With Stephen Colbert featured a musical performance by The Legend of Zelda: Symphony of the Goddesses, Nintendo’s touring orchestra dedicated to the adventure series. Watch the video below to see the group perform never-before-heard music from upcoming Nintendo 3DS game The Legend of Zelda: TriForce Heroes, as well as the main theme that you’re surely familiar with.

It’s a nice video, and the music of course is great. But the video’s caption on YouTube may not sit well with everyone. It reads: “Rejoice, nerds! This is the music that awaits you in heaven.” Also, be sure to stick through to the end to see an awkward handshake between Colbert and the symphony conductor.

TriForce Heroes launches on October 23, while the Symphony of the Goddesses tour is currently running across the US and Europe. The 2016 leg of the tour, Master Quest, was just announced this week. Check out the symphony’s complete touring schedule here.

Zelda’s appearance on The Late Show marks the third time video games have been represented on the program, following PewDiePie and No Man’s Sky developer Sean Murray’s appearances earlier in October.

  • Nintendo's First Smartphone Game Will Be Announced "Soon"

Nintendo's First Smartphone Game Will Be Announced "Soon"

The first of Nintendo’s new smartphone games that it’s making in collaboration with DeNA will be announced “soon.” That’s according to DeNA West CEO Shintaro Asako, who teased this week at the GamesBeat 2015 conference that fans don’t have to wait much longer, though he didn’t share any other details.

“Soon, we should be able to announce the game,” Asako said, according to VentureBeat.

Nintendo previously said it expected to launch the first of its smartphone/tablet games before the year is out. It’s already the middle of October, so an announcement coming soon is no big surprise.

Though Asako didn’t give away any details about this game, he confirmed that it remains Nintendo’s plan to launch five new smartphone/tablet games between now and March 2017. This plan has not changed in the wake of former president Satoru Iwata’s death this summer. Overall, Asako described DeNA’s partnership with Nintendo as a “really long-term initiative.”

Japanese industry analyst Serkan Toto offered his own tease about the first Nintendo-DeNA game.

About that first Nintendo-DeNA mobile game: Expect the unexpected, and soon.

    — Dr. Serkan Toto (@serkantoto) October 2, 2015

As for why Nintendo is getting into the smartphone gaming business at all, after so many years of refusing to do so, executive Scott Moffitt previously said the company simply could not deny the ubiquity of the market.

“We can’t deny the massive install base of smartphones out there, and some fans that aren’t old enough yet to afford their own gaming console, perhaps for those consumers they can start to appreciate some of our content and build a relationship with some of our characters and our franchises,” he explained in August. “We feel it’s going to be an additive to our console business.”

Nintendo’s new smartphone games are being developed under the direction of veteran Mario Kart producer Hideki Konno. The company taking this long to bring its franchises to mobile was one of the reasons that Nintendo is no longer one of the world’s top 100 brands, according to one survey.

The film stars Michael Fassbender in the two key roles from the game, Callum and Aguilar. It is directed by Justin Kurzel, who recently helmed Macbeth, which also featured Fassbender in the lead role. His Macbeth co-star Marion Cotillard will also appear, alongside Jeremy Irons, Brendan Gleeson, and Michael Kenneth Williams.

Last week, Ubisoft Motion Pictures CEO Jean-Julien Baronnet explained that Fassbender’s role in the production would go beyond simply playing the lead. “We told him we were going to build the project together,” he said. “We have a huge brand and we want to make a make a film with references to feature films like Batman Begins and Blade Runner. He was promised that he could work with the writers, we would associate it with all key creative choices.”

  • Resident Evil Team Dives Deeper Into VR After Horrifying Project Kitchen Demo

One of Capcom’s Resident Evil teams is working on establishing a foundation for virtual reality experiences, with hopes it can create “must-play games” that are a “half-step ahead of user expectations,” and explore ideas that aren’t borne out of marketing data.

On October 13, the corporation published a report detailing strategies for growth in the future. Included in the document is a message from Jun Takeuichi, head of Development Division 1 and producer of recent Resident Evil titles, who said the team is working on a VR engine.

“At present, we are focusing our energy on challenging the virtual reality game market. In this terrifying world, you can twist and turn as you like, but there’s no escaping the creatures closing in on you…until you remove your VR headset and return to reality, that is,” he said.

“We delivered this very experienced with our Kitchen VR technical demo at E3 2015. The response was excellent. Currently, we are building a new game development engine able to support VR, which is the hottest market right now, while simultaneously developing titles for current game consoles. We have just set sail on our latest voyage.”

Project Kitchen is a PlayStation VR experience that places players inside a kitchen along with another nefarious presence. It is set up to be a SAWlike scenario, giving the player no context for the events, leaving them to experience the horrors of the scenario.

Although Takeuichi alluded to non-VR experience for PlayStation 4, Xbox One, and PC, it is not yet clear what these titles are. Capcom recently told fans to “stay tuned” for Resident Evil 7 news.

“We’re currently not at a state to talk about it,” added producer Masachika Kawata when asked directly about Resident Evil 7. Discussing the idea that the Resident Evil series is “losing its horror touch,” Kawata seemed to agree, and indicated Capcom wants the franchise to return to its horror roots.

“Since there’s been more spinoff titles, I can see how it can be perceived in such a way. And of course I believe that we should produce titles that bring out the horror. I’m thinking about it and also preparing for it.”

Capcom has said HD remakes of older games represent a key are potential growth. In August it announced a Resident Evil 2 remake. Kawata has said Capcom will consider more HD remakes of classic Resident Evil games as a means to “respond to as much demand as possible.”

At TGS 2015, Capcom announced a new Resident Evil spinoff shooter called Umbrella Corps.

  • Bungie Addresses Destiny Microtransaction Concerns

Destiny‘s new microtransactions are currently limited to emotes only. Though Bungie may one day expand the offerings, don’t expect to be able to buy items that buff drop rates for the new King’s Fall raid.

Writing on Twitter, The Taken King creative director Luke Smith said, “We aren’t (nor are we planning) on selling consumables that buff King’s Fall drop rates for Silver.”

His comments come after players discovered (via IGN) new items in the raid, such as buffs for armor and weapon drops, well as one that lets you acquire additional Moldering Shards. Some thought Bungie might sell these items for Destiny’s new in-game currency, Silver. But that’s not going to be the case.

Some have also wondered if Bungie might sell level-boosters, like the one that comes with The Taken King, for Silver. Smith did not respond to this specific item. It wouldn’t be uncharted territory for an Activision game, however, as World of Warcraft also sell level boosts.

Destiny’s microtransactions arrived on Tuesday through the game’s major update, which also made a number of other tweaks, refinements, and adjustments. For more on Destiny’s new in-game store, check out GameSpot’s breakdown of all the emotes available in the store and what they cost. You can also watch the video above to get a closer look at the motes, including one based on “the Carlton” from Fresh Prince.
