Gears of War 4 Dev Teases More News "Soon"

Sunday night brought a moving new trailer for Gears of War 4, but it sounds like more news about the Xbox One shooter may be just around the corner.

Following the release of the new video, developer The Coalition community director Adam Fletcher said on Twitter, “Tonight was awesome! Not slowing down… more things to show #soon.”

Fletcher did not share any further specifics about what the “more things” might be. One possibility is more details about the upcoming Gears of War 4 multiplayer beta, which begins on April 18.

The Gears of War 4 trailer, set to Disturbed’s cover of Simon & Garfunkel’s “The Sound of Silence,” was released on Sunday evening as part of Fear the Walking Dead season two’s premiere. It’s a pretty powerful piece, showcasing a young JD Fenix and his father Marcus. Go watch it here.

You can also check out this story to learn about why Disturbed singer David Draiman was attracted to the project and more.

The Gears of War 4 release date is set for October 11 for Xbox One. A PC version may also be released, but nothing has been confirmed at this stage.

On the subject of multiplayer, producer Rod Fergusson recently said Gears of War’s multiplayer–since Gears of War 1–has been “under-served,” and explained why Gears of War 4 will change that.

  • Gears of War 4 Trailer: Disturbed Singer Says "It Gave Me the Chills"

Gears of War 4 Trailer: Disturbed Singer Says "It Gave Me the Chills"

The stunning new trailer for Gears of War 4 features an eerie version of Simon & Garfunkel’s “The Sound of Silence” performed by metal band Disturbed. Now, the band’s frontman David Draiman has spoken up to talk about the trailer and his love of the Gears of War series.

“It gave me the chills,” Draiman told Inverse about the trailer. “It seemed very, very appropriate for the storyline, for what the main character is going through, and it seems to set the stage perfectly.”

“It seemed it was a marriage that was meant to be,” he added about using his band’s cover of the Simon & Garfunkel song.

Inverse explains that “The Sound of Silence” is about a “man’s inability to communicate.” This can be connected to Gears of War 4’s story–set 25 years after Gears of War 3–as the game sees the people of Sera living inside walls to protect themselves from creatures in the wild. The new trailer specifically is a moving piece, flashing back and forth between past and present to show how the world has evolved–and not always for the better.

While not a survival horror game, Gears of War 4 aims to return to the “dark” roots of the first Gears of War.

Also in the interview, Draiman talks about being a fan of the Gears of War franchise, citing the first game specifically. “The storyline was always so dramatic,” he said. “It really drew you in and kind of helped you role play, so to speak, while you were actually playing the game. I’ve always enjoyed the series, and it’s definitely one of my favorites.”

The full interview with Draiman covers the fan reaction to Disturbed’s Simon & Garfunkel cover and more. Go read it here.

  • Explore King Kong Reboot's Skull Island in On-set Video

King Kong is one of the oldest and most famous movie monsters, and will return to screens in 2017. Kong: Skull Island recently wrapped production, and the MTV Movie Awards last night screened a behind-the-scenes featurette from the set. Check it out below:

Kong: Skull Island focuses upon a group of explorers who embark for adventures on a mysterious tropical isle, and encounter an island filled with strange creatures–including a certain giant ape. Thor‘s Tom Hiddleston, Oscar-winner Brie Larson, Samuel L Jackson, and John Goodman star, with Jordan Vogt-Roberts directing.

In December last year it was announced that the film would form part of an ongoing monster movie series. Following the success of 2014’s Godzilla, producers Legendary have teamed up with Warner to create a “shared cinematic franchise,” that would also include Godzilla 2 in 2018 and Godzilla Vs Kong in 2020.

Kong: Skull Island stomps into cinemas on March 10, 2017.

  • NES Zapper-Inspired Real Handgun Lands Manufacturer in Hot Water

NES Zapper-Inspired Real Handgun Lands Manufacturer in Hot Water

A custom gun-making company has created a handgun modeled after the NES Zapper from Duck Hunt. Not everyone was happy with the creation, and now its maker, Texas-based Precision Syndicate, has spoken up to respond to concerns and stress the company has no plans to mass-produce the pistol.

“In light of the ‘Nintendo Glock’ drama, we feel that the media and our fans need to know that this firearm will not be mass produced nor will it ever be,” the company said in a statement on Facebook (via Polygon).

Instead, the gun was made as a custom build for a company friend.

Considering the NES Zapper is most commonly associated with the children’s game Duck Hunt, some took issue with Precision’s decision to make a real gun based on it. Precision stressed that families should “please keep your guns locked up and away from children; it’s common sense.”

Precision’s “Nintendo Glock” is a sharp-looking model of the famous gaming peripheral, capturing its trademark red and gray colors. It also says “Nintendo Zapper” on the barrel, so it was unlikely that Precision would have ever been able to mass-produce it, as Nintendo’s lawyers would have undoubtedly stepped in.

The handgun was announced on April 6. Comments on the announcement post were mixed, with some praising the design and others saying it’s a step too far to make a real gun based on a gaming peripheral.

Precision acknowledged it wasn’t the first to make a real-world Nintendo Zapper, but said it was happy with the look and design of it. “We weren’t the first to do it but WOW, this glock turned out good!” it said.

  • The Division Bug Removes Daily Missions, Fix Coming in April Update

Daily missions in Tom Clancy’s The Division have disappeared due to a bug, but Ubisoft has said the issue will be addressed in the April update.

“Please note that the issue with Daily Hard and Challenging missions will be fixed with the Update deployed on April 12,” the game’s official Twitter account posted.

“This means that Daily Hard and Challenging missions will not be available until April 12. We apologize for the inconvenience.”

The Division’s April update will be free an Incursion, which are the game’s versions of raids. Falcon Lost, this game’s first Incursion, is an end-game mission that challenges players to work together to complete its objectives. Matchmaking can be used to find teammates, but there’s needs to be good communication between each player, as there are no checkpoints. That means if your team is killed, you’ll have to start over.

Other features coming with the update include new gear sets, which unlock specific talents when equipped with matching pieces, and trading. Items can be traded with other players by dropping them on the ground, which allows other players in your group to then pick them up.

A spectator camera will also be added, along with assignments (weekly and daily missions that reward you with Phoenix credits). The full 1.1 patch notes for the April update have been release, you can see all the new features, balance changes, and bug fixes here.

Another free update called Conflict will deliver an Incursion set in Columbus Circle at some point in the future.

  • Driveclub Devs Join Codemasters, Following Studio Closure

Codemasters, the developer of the Dirt, Grid, and F1 series of racing games, has hired developers from Evolution Studios, the team behind PlayStation 4 racing sim, Driveclub.

Writing on its blog, the publisher said: “Codemasters will be expanding its portfolio of studios to include the highly-respected and very talented team from Evolution Studios.”

On March 22, Sony announced plans to close Evolution, meaning that many of the studio’s workforce face redundancy. According to Codemasters, the success of F1 2015 and Dirt Rally has “re-positioned the company for growth,” which starts with the acquisition of talent from the formerly PlayStation-exclusive development studio.

Codemasters has not acquired Evolution Studios, nor its IP. The publisher did not specify how many people it had hired.

“This expansion will not only see us gain a wealth of racing expertise and skill, but it’ll take Codemasters to the next level as the world’s largest racing-focused games company. With phenomenal racing DNA, we hope that gamers out there are excited to see what we do next–as are all of us here at Codies.”

Evolution Studios co-founder Mick Hockin has been appointed VP of product development at Codemasters. He will be responsible for all of the company’s studios–including the addition of the now multi-platform Evolution team.

“I’m delighted to be joining Codemasters at such an exciting time in the company’s growth,” he said. “We have a shared passion for racing, a desire to innovate and a determination to create the best racing games and build the biggest racing community in the market. I’m very much looking forward to working with so many of the world’s greatest racing developers, on new IP as well as exciting franchises including Dirt, Grid, Micro Machines, and the Formula One games.”

In its previous statement announcing the closure of Evolution, Sony said the restructure would allow it to focus on “on other Studios that already have exciting new projects in development.”

It continued: “We believe we will be in a stronger position going forward and able to offer the best possible content of the highest quality for our consumers.”

At the time, Paul Rustchynsky, director of Driveclub, thanked fans and Sony for their support.

“Firstly, a big, big thank you to all the fans that have supported us throughout Evo’s storied history; we couldn’t have achieved what we did without you,” he said. “Thank you to Sony who helped Evo rise to the top tier of racing game teams in the world, working as a first party team has been a fantastic experience.”
