  • What Fallout 4 and Doom are Like in VR

What Fallout 4 and Doom are Like in VR

After Bethesda unveiled that Fallout 4 and Doom would be ported over to VR (to work with the HTC Vive), I was delighted, but also really curious to see how the ports would hold up. While I love VR, the medium does face a lot of unique design challenges. For instance, using a joystick to move around in VR can induce motion sickness for many people. Many people are calling the issue “locomotion” and it’s caused when our eyes perceive that we’re moving, but our bodies do not. Thankfully, Bethesda seems to have a good understanding of this problem and are trying to tackle it in interesting ways.

    Fallout 4

The Fallout 4 VR demo started me off at the Red Rocket truck stop, which is an early area in the game. Because the developers programmed the demo to have raiders come and attack me, the rep who gave me the demo told me not to venture too far away from the station. Considering it doesn’t use a joystick for movement, you might be wondering how I would even venture off to begin with. Like VR games like Budget Cuts and The Gallery before it, the VR version of Fallout 4 uses a teleport mechanic. With my left hand, I could hold down the Vive’s left trigger button to see a green, glowing arc shoot out of my PIP Boy, which is appropriately attached to my wrist. The arc has a limited range, however. This is most likely to prevent you from teleporting vast distances in the heat of battle with a single click. I want to say the teleportation limit is roughly 40-50 feet or so. Considering the original game didn’t feature teleportation, it will be interesting to see if Bethesda tweaks the narrative to take the new mechanic into account.

While the standard version of the game features of ton of in-game menus for you to sift through, the only menus I came across in the demo were actually contained within the PIP Boy on my left wrist. All the leveling, inventory, and map menus are appropriately located here and you navigate the menus with the controller’s touchpad. It’s a pretty cool VR implementation that worked well, at least with the relatively short time I played with it.

Once the raiders showed up, I proceeded to teleport around the truck stop to use the environment to dodge gunfire and fire back with my pistol. Interestingly enough, there is no VATS system in the current demo, but the Bethesda rep told me the company wasn’t ruling it out. While the gunplay felt good and accurate, surprisingly, I didn’t have to reload my gun in the demo. Conversely, this also meant that I had infinite ammo.

While the demo was fun, one big gripe that I had with it was that it was hard to discern what objects you could physically pick up in the game. The rep told me that you could physically pick up everything you could normally pick up in the regular game, but this conversely means you can’t pick up most virtual objects. Having gotten used to games like Job Simulator, a title that’s built from the ground up for VR, where you can pick up nearly everything, it was a bit jarring to see my hand simply clip through a tire as I futilely try to pick it up. The rep also told me that the items that I could pick up would be highlighted in green as I got close to them, but I didn’t come across any of these objects in my limited playthrough.

Another aspect of the game that I didn’t get to see was the dialogue wheel. Since most of the UI seems to be contained within the PIP Boy, it will be interesting to see how Bethesda handles this mechanic. It might also be a weird out-of-body experience to hear someone speaking out of your own body. Hopefully we’ll learn more about how Bethesda aims to tackle these issues soon.

    Doom

The VR version of Doom that Bethesda was showing off seemed much more like a tech demo than a full-on game. The demo took place with me standing atop a tall, thin pillar and had me blasting hordes of monsters in a canyon-like arena. I was expecting the monsters to attack me, but to my surprise, they all fought each other instead. With the Vive’s right controller, I switched to the pulse rifle, which allowed me to spam purple laser balls at the horde below. With my left hand, I could hold down the trigger button to bring out grenades and chuck it at incoming baddies.

After this section ended, the demo tossed me into a large room with a bunch of Doom’s various boss monsters. They were all just standing there, and they were ginormous up close in VR. I’m talking like 10-foot tall here. The point of this demo was to show the scale of these beasts. They all proceeded to scream and fought each other to the death.

Again, because the game featured no traversal mechanic, it felt more like a shooting-gallery tech demo. When I asked Bethesda if the company had any plans on expanding the experience, the reps simply said they had nothing else to show at this time. Hopefully Bethesda will continue to push the boundaries of what it can do in VR moving forward.

  • Some Xbox One Games Might Run Better on Project Scorpio, Xbox Head Says

Microsoft recently confirmed that the Xbox One S won’t give the games you already own a power boost, but it sounds like the more powerful Project Scorpio might. Xbox head Phil Spencer appeared on GameSpot sister site Giant Bomb’s Live at E3 show and said that if a game uses dynamic scaling then it will “run a little better.”

“If you look at a game like Halo 5, [it] implements something called dynamic scaling,” Spencer explained. “As scenes get more complex, in order to maintain 60 frames per second, they will actually change the resolution that you’re running at, and they’re not the only game that does this. So if you run that game on Project Scorpio you’re actually going to be at the max frame rate of that game more often.”

Spencer didn’t mention any other examples of games that would run better, but if all games that use this method would show better performance on Scorpio, then you could expect dynamic-scaling games like The Witcher 3, Doom, and The Division to sustain their max frame rate much more easily. However, Spencer isn’t interested in making this one of the more powerful console’s marquee features.

“I’m not going to put that as a top-selling feature of Scorpio because not all games use dynamic scaling,” Spencer explained. “I’m trying to be transparent with people with the design of Project Scorpio and what it was designed for. It was designed in order to enable these high fidelity 4K experiences. So some of the existing games will actually run a little better if they’re using dynamic scaling.”

Despite the better performance of some existing games, Spencer says you shouldn’t “buy Scorpio to run your existing library of games.”

This announcement is part of Spencer’s plan to be transparent with what Microsoft is doing with the Xbox One. That’s why the company revealed two consoles at its E3 press conference.

  • Watch the First Footage From Jack Reacher Sequel Never Go Back

The 2012 Tom Cruise thriller Jack Reacher might not have been quite as big a success as the Mission Impossible series, but it did well enough to merit a sequel. Jack Reacher: Never Go Back is set to be released in October, and Entertainment Tonight has revealed a first look at the film. It’s a preview of the trailer, plus an interview with co-star Cobie Smulders. Check it out below:

The film is directed by Edward Zwick, who previously worked with Cruise on 2003’s The Last Samurai. It is based on the 18th of Lee Child’s bestselling novels, 2013’s Never Go Back. To date, there have been 20 Reacher novels.

In an interview with Joblo last year, Zwick explained that he wouldn’t simply be copying the formula of the first film. “It’s going to be a very different movie than the last one,” he said. “Because there is a nice sort of anthology possibility to a continuing character like that, it’s a whole different world–a different set of circumstances that he finds himself in. So it will be a different movie and I hope a standalone movie.”

Jack Reacher: Never Go Back hits theaters on October 21, 2016.

  • Beverly Hills Cop 4 Moves Closer, Directors Found

Beverly Hills Cop 4 Moves Closer, Directors Found

Beverly Hills Cop was among the most successful films of the 1980s, and it helped make Eddie Murphy one of the biggest stars in Hollywood. Two sequels followed, and a fourth movie has been in various stages of development for two decades. It now seems as though Beverly Hills Cop 4 is getting closer to happening, with the news that its directors have been hired.

According to Deadline, Murphy and producer Jerry Bruckheimer have settled on rising Belgian directors Adil El Arbi and Bilall Fallah to helm the film. The pair scored a major critical success last year with their drama Black, which won the Discovery Award at the Toronto Film Festival. The site states that both Murphy and Bruckheimer were impressed by Black, and approached El Arbi and Fallah to work on Beverly Hills Cop 4.

Deadline reports that the filmmakers are hoping to start production on the movie later this year or in early 2017.

Beverly Hills Cop 4 was originally announced in the mid-90s, and then again a decade later, with Rush Hour‘s Brett Ratner initially lined up to direct. The most recent attempt to revitalise the action comedy franchise was for television. A pilot focusing on Murphy’s character’s son was produced for CBS in 2013, but the network chose not to pick up the show.

  • Sony Expects PlayStation VR Shortages, Discusses More Powerful PS4

Sony Expects PlayStation VR Shortages, Discusses More Powerful PS4

When PlayStation VR launches in October, you might have a difficult time finding a unit to buy. PlayStation executive Andrew House told CNBC that he is quite sure there will be supply constraints, due in part to VR being such a new category that modeling sales is not so easy.

“We have growing confidence that we’ll be supply constrained with this product, but we’ll do our very best to meet demand,” House said. “Virtual reality is a medium that’s in its infancy. With such a nascent, very new form of storytelling, it’s difficult to predict what user uptake is going to be.”

Also in the interview, House said he expects PlayStation VR games to be priced in the range of $20-$40, though some games will come in below and above that.

During Sony’s E3 2016 briefing on Monday, the company announced that PlayStation VR will launch on October 13. As detailed previously, the device, which requires PlayStation 4 and a PlayStation Camera, starts at $400 for the headset alone. You can also buy a bundle that comes with the headset, two PlayStation Move controllers, a PlayStation Camera, and the PlayStation Worlds game for $500.

In other news about PlayStation VR, Sony this week announced some new games for it, including a Batman title and a VR version of Final Fantasy XV.

Sony is also working on a more powerful PlayStation 4. In the CNBC interview, House suggested that the days of waiting seven years for a new PlayStation or Xbox device may be over.

“People invest in a console and they want to have that investment validated over a decent period of time,” he said. “That being said, with iterations like Neo we are, to some degree as an industry, acknowledging the pace of iteration has shifted. … People have become attuned to a slightly different cadence of innovation. The critical thing is to give the consumer options, rather than dictate the future for them.”

For its part, Microsoft this week announced that its new Xbox Scorpio system, which is more powerful than the Xbox One and VR-ready, will come out at the end of next year.

  • Doctor Strange Will Have a "Different Flavour" to Other Marvel Films

Doctor Strange Will Have a "Different Flavour" to Other Marvel Films

With Captain America: Civil War now in theaters, attention is turning to the next movie on the Marvel roster–Doctor Strange. The fantasy adventure is released in November, and co-star Mads Mikkelsen has been speaking about what fans can expect from the film.

In an interview with Yahoo! Movies, the Hannibal star explained that while Doctor Strange would certainly stand apart from many of Marvel’s other films, it wouldn’t push the surreal aspects of the story quite as far as the comics it is based on.

“If you look at the comic books, [they] are quite different [to other Marvel stories],” he said. “I think that the film will be different from the other [Marvel] films that we’ve seen, but not as different as the books are, because that was basically the ’60s and ’70s. It was more like an acid trip.

“We’ve taken that fascination of the time into something we can relate to today. So you still have the energy, you still have the colours, you still have the madness, but you also have something you can identify with. I think that was a necessity–if not, you would just make a crazy film.

“But you still have it there–you have all the action, all the good ingredients you get in a Marvel film, but it will have a different flavour, that’s for sure.”

Mikkelsen also revealed that his currently-unnamed character wouldn’t be a traditional superhero villain. “He’s not a villain in that way–he’s a man who believes in something else than the hero,” he said. “That doesn’t mean that he doesn’t want to make the planet look wonderful or he wants to save the world as well, but he has a different way of doing it. He is the antagonist, of course, but he’s not necessarily wrong.”

Doctor Strange stars Benedict Cumberbatch as mystical sorcerer Stephen Strange, with Tilda Swinton as Strange’s mentor, the Ancient One. It also features Chiwetel Ejiofor and Rachel McAdams, and is directed by Sinister‘s Scott Derrickson.

The first trailer was released in April–check it out here. The film hits theaters on November 4, 2016.

  • X-Men Spinoff Movie Gambit Might Lose Another Director–Report

X-Men Spinoff Movie Gambit Might Lose Another Director–Report

While the X-Men franchise continues from strength-to-strength, with Deadpool and X-Men: Apocalypse both major box office hits and Wolverine 3 currently in production, there one upcoming movie in that universe that isn’t having quite as much luck. Gambit has already suffered from directors leaving and release dates disappearing, and it has now been reported that the status of current director Doug Liman is uncertain.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, Liman is close to signing on to direct the futuristic Young Adult thriller Chaos Walking, replacing Robert Zemeckis. THR reports that production is scheduled to begin in the Fall, which is when Gambit is set to shoot. While Liman is still officially attached to Gambit, involvement with Chaos Walking would obviously mean the superhero movie either moving back again, or another director having to be found.

Gambit was originally scheduled for a release in October this year, with Rise of the Planet of the Apes‘ Rupert Wyatt as director. He left the film in September 2015, citing citing scheduling conflicts. However, a story in Deadline at the time suggested that there had been ongoing disagreements over both the script and budget.

Even though Liman was announced as director late last year, the film is yet to be given another release date. Production was due to start in the spring, before moving back to the end of 2016, to allow time for further rewrites on the film.

Gambit will star Channing Tatum as the card-throwing superhero of the title, alongside Spectre‘s Léa Seydoux. Like Deadpool, Gambit is a character spun off from the X-Men, first appearing in a 1990 issue of The Uncanny X-Men. He appeared briefly in 2009’s critically panned X-Men Origins: Wolverine, portrayed by Taylor Kitsch.

  • Xbox Live Gold Not Required for New PC-Xbox One Cross-Buy Program

Microsoft has confirmed that Xbox Live Gold is not required for the Play Anywhere feature announced today whereby buying an Xbox One game gets you the PC version free or vice versa. You will, of course, need Gold for online multiplayer, including the new Arenas feature.

“Xbox Live Gold isn’t required for playing games that are Xbox Play Anywhere other than enjoying online multiplayer with those games on Xbox One,” a Microsoft representative told GameSpot today. “Similarly, Xbox Live Gold is needed for playing online multiplayer on Xbox One through Arenas on Xbox Live.”

Microsoft also confirmed with GameSpot today that Gold is not required to use two upcoming Xbox Live features: background music and language region independence. These features are due to arrive this summer through a new Xbox One update, and there was never any reason to believe they would require Gold.

GameSpot has followed up with Microsoft in an attempt to find out if the new Clubs and Looking for Group features require Xbox Live Gold. Since they both are connected to online multiplayer, it seems likely that they would.

A list of all the Play Anywhere games (so far) can be seen here, while you can check out this news roundup to catch up with all of the announcements Microsoft made today.
