  • Finding Dory Breaks Record With $9.6 Million Opening Night

Finding Dory Breaks Record With $9.6 Million Opening Night

Finding Dory has been projected to be Pixar’s biggest opening yet, and so far, it’s on the right track. Variety reports that the Finding Nemo sequel earned $9.2 million on its opening night Thursday, breaking an animated film record. It was previously held by last year’s Minions, which had an opening night earning of $6.2 million.

Pixar’s latest movie is set to pull in between $115 million and $120 million this weekend, which would put it ahead of Pixar’s current best debut of $110.3 million for Toy Story 3. Finding Dory will be in swinging distance of Shrek the Third‘s opening weekend animated debut record of $121.6 million.

In GameSpot’s Finding Dory review, critic Randolph Ramsay said, “The best Pixar movies possess a rare magic; they mix deep emotional resonance with broad laughs. One moment your sides are splitting with laughter, and the next you’re on the verge of tears. Finding Dory achieves just that, making for a rare sequel that surpasses the original.”

You can take a look at the wider critical reception with GameSpot’s review roundup, where we’ve collected a selection of Finding Dory reviews from around the Internet.

  • Dead Rising 4 Is a Timed-Exclusive for Xbox One and Windows 10 PC

Dead Rising 4 is set to release exclusively for Xbox One and Windows 10 PC in December, but Microsoft has confirmed to GameSpot that the upcoming zombie game is only a timed-exclusive and could eventually make its way to PS4 and Steam. You can read Microsoft’s statement below.

“‘Dead Rising 4’ on Xbox One is developed by Capcom and will be published in partnership with Microsoft. Fans will be able to play ‘Dead Rising 4’ first on Xbox One and Windows 10 PC this December. It will remain a Windows 10 exclusive for the first 90 days and console exclusive on Xbox One for one year. We’ve had a close and longstanding relationship with Capcom including the launch of Dead Rising as an Xbox 360 exclusive and Dead Rising 3 as an Xbox One exclusive. We’re thrilled to partner with Capcom once again to help bring their ambitious vision for Dead Rising 4 to life.”

Dead Rising 3 was exclusive to the Xbox One, until 10 months later when it released on PC. As part of a console-exclusivity deal with Microsoft, it never launched on PS4.

Capcom’s next open-world zombie game was officially revealed during Microsoft’s E3 press conference after multiple leaks. It marks the return of the original game’s protagonist and setting–you’ll once again play Frank West as he revisits Willamette, Colorado.

Dead Rising 4 releases for Xbox One and PC on December 6.

Another timed-exclusive is Rise of the Tomb Raider, which initially released on the Xbox One last year, followed by a PC release months later. It’s scheduled for a holiday 2016 release on PS4, though a specific date has not been confirmed.

  • WWE 2K17 Roster Picks Announced With Artist's Painting

WWE 2K17 Roster Picks Announced With Artist's Painting

Three members of the upcoming WWE 2K17‘s roster were announced at E3, but it wasn’t during a press conference or livestream like many others. Instead, an artist painted portraits of John Cena, Ultimate Warrior, and “Legit Boss” Sasha Banks.

It’s no surprise that any of these superstars made it into this year’s roster. Cena is WWE’s marquee superstar, Warrior is one of the company’s most respected wrestlers ever, and Banks is a top women’s competitor. However, the painting itself is quite nice, and it was definitely worth announcing them in this way. Check it out for yourself in an image sent by 2K below.

Artist Rob Schamberger is responsible for the painting, and this isn’t the first time he’s created artwork of WWE’s superstars. Schamberger is well known for his WWE artwork that’s helped raise money for charities and is available to purchase as prints and t-shirts on the WWE Shop. One particularly excellent painting is the one he did of the New Day–you can see it at the bottom of this article.

WWE 2K17 was announced with a trailer that confirmed Goldberg as the wrestling game’s cover star. Two versions of Goldberg will be available as playable characters to anyone who preorders the game–you’ll also get two WCW arenas if you throw down money before launch.

This wasn’t the only 2K game that had some kind of presence at E3. You can check out news and videos of Mafia III and Sid Meier’s Civilization VI through the links below.

  • NHL 17 Hands You The Controls At Many Levels

Appreciating the new details of NHL 17 is a challenge. That’s because EA Canada’s already excelled in the previous game’s production values. It takes a keen eye to spot the little details in the hockey series’ latest, but the touches are there. Layering on top of an already superb and vast collection of motion capture animation from last year, the studio has honed in on the overdue improvements of goalie detail. Accurate player facial capture is highly valued, so why not unique goalie stances? Whether it’s Garret Sparks or Jonathan Quick, no two goalies stand similarly in front of their respective goals. Moreover, EA Canada added a whole suite of new saves, drawing the distinction between big blocking saves and quick reactionary ones. And while no goalie would like to get a single puck past them, NHL 17 will also have a new set of post-goal reaction animations from the goalies. It’s part of a larger effort to make the area around the goal more involving, particularly with net battles. It’s about tying up an opposing player near the net. You decide how to handle the opposing player’s stick and whether to be in front or behind the player. You’ll have to use your size and strength to push the other player in front of the net to protect it while the AI counters accordingly.

You can expect even deeper changes off the ice. The new Franchise Mode essentially absorbs Be a GM mode but it’s still the mode where you’re able to build and manage your team. That comes with the challenge of working with an owner while you’re GM. The myriad owners have their own unique personalities and you’ll be tasked with making decisions that the owner might or might not agree with. You have to make a budget, figure out how to make a profit, consider salaries, marketing, promotional nights like bobblehead night, arena upgrades, and concession stand pricing. If things don’t work out, you can start fresh by moving to other cities. It becomes a case of macro and micro managing. The micro aspect greatly complement’s NHL 17’s customization depth. Options are rich out of the box but you can work toward more customization possibilities if you advance through EA Sports Hockey League. As a GM, you can take it granularly, especially with the arenas. That includes seat and wall colors, railings, the design of the jumbotron, special effects, goal songs, and even entrance music.

Lastly, Draft Champions invades NHL. At its simplest, Draft Champions is about taking the best player in a four-person round in a series of 10 to 12 rounds. It would help knowing what kind of team you’d like to build going into the draft, whether you want to be well rounded, an offensive team or a defensive team, and if you want a stacked first line or a stacked second line. It’s also a betting game. You might want to pass on a high rated goalie in one round in favor of a great center, but you might you only have mediocre goalies to choose from during the later rounds.

NHL 17 is due out this September.

  • Ocean's Eleven Reboot Title Confirmed by Director

Ocean's Eleven Reboot Title Confirmed by Director

The title of the upcoming female-led reboot of Ocean’s Eleven has been announced. The film will be called Ocean’s Eight, and director Gary Ross has revealed what audiences can expect from this new take on the heist comedy.

Speaking to Slashfilm, Ross confirmed the title of the movie, and explained that it would very much follow the tone set by Steven Soderbergh’s hugely successful trilogy. “I think it’s a pretty similar tone,” he said. “You know, Steven and I are incredibly close friends, and we would not have done this if we weren’t. I don’t think he would’ve wanted anyone to do it if we weren’t. This is very much an extension and a continuation. He’s a producer on the movie.

“In one way or another, this has been a 20-year conversation between Steven and I, collaborating in ways the whole world doesn’t know about: I helped him on the previous Ocean’s Eleven films; he shot second unit on The Hunger Games; I’ve done ADR lines for him; and he reads all my scripts. It’s a very long, ongoing collaboration.

“This, I think, is a very seamless process. We’re different filmmakers, obviously, so there will be those differences, but one of the things I’m drawn to is the amazing tone Steven was able to create, and we discuss that a lot. We discuss the cinema a lot, the shooting style, the rhythm, the editing style, and the music. We discuss it all. I’m in no way trying to reinvent the tone, and I’m thrilled and honored to be extending it.”

Earlier this week it was reported that Elizabeth Banks had joined the cast of Ocean’s Eight, which is also set to star Sandra Bullock, Cate Blanchett, Helena Bonham Carter, and Mindy Kaling. Banks previously worked with Ross on The Hunger Games.

Accord to The Tracking Board, Bullock will play the sister of Danny Ocean, the character portrayed by George Clooney in Soderbergh’s trilogy. The 2001 Ocean’s Eleven earned $450 million worldwide, and while the two sequels weren’t quite as successful, they all proved to be considerable box office hits.

  • New Alien: Covenant On-set Image Reveals Director Ridley Scott and Michael Fassbender

New Alien: Covenant On-set Image Reveals Director Ridley Scott and Michael Fassbender

Although the 2012 film Prometheus was only loosely connected to the Alien series, everything points towards its upcoming sequel to having a lot more to do with that classic franchise. For a start it’s called Alien: Covenant, and director Ridley Scott has stressed on a number of occasions that there will be plenty to connect it to his original 1979 Alien. A new behind-the-scenes image has now been tweeted, that reveals Scott and actor Michael Fassbender:

    — Alien Anthology (@AlienAnthology) June 15, 2016

This is the second official production image revealed in recent weeks. In late May, a first look at star Katherine Waterston was posted on Facebook–check it out here.

A few on-set pictures have also leaked over the past couple of months. This striking shot of what looks like the aftermath of an alien massacre was published by the Daily Mail, while in April, video footage of a spectacular controlled explosion was posted online. The first official image was the insignia for the spaceship of the title.

In a recent interview for Inquirer, Fassbender gave fans a hint of what they could expect from the latest movie in the long-running sci-fi series. “There are going to be great sets and aliens coming out of people,” he said. “The sets are fantastic. Again, the most impressive sets I’ve seen since Prometheus, which was the original setting.

“It’s a fantastic mixture of high-end technology and primitive elements. The way that I can explain it is the same way that Ridley did Blade Runner.”

The film is currently shooting in New Zealand and Australia. The cast also includes Danny McBride, Billy Crudup, and Demian Bichir, and it is set for release on October 6, 2017.

  • Paper Mario: Color Splash Gets Release Date, Features Talking Paint Bucket

Paper Mario: Color Splash‘s release date announcement was accompanied by a trailer shown during Nintendo’s Treehouse E3 livestream, which showed off the upcoming Wii U game and some of its new features.

Color Splash’s main mechanic revolves around the new Paint Hammer, which can be used to paint things that have lost their color, solve puzzles, and revive color-drained Toads. There’s also a new Battle Card system that’s implemented in bouts with enemies. For example, you can use an extinguisher card against a baddie with a fire weapon or summon a Japanese cat figurine with the appropriate card to stomp on enemies.

There’s also a new feature that utilizes the Wii U gamepad’s touchscreen. At certain points, you’ll hit obstacles that need to be overcome. It’s these moments where you’ll use the touchscreen to cut out pieces of the environment and jump these hurdles.

2007’s Super Paper Mario was the last console game in the series, and it received a score of 8.8 in GameSpot’s review. Critic Ricardo Torres concluded, “Super Paper Mario’s humorous story, accessible gameplay, inventive design, cool visual style, and impressive amount of content give it an undeniable charm.”

  • Xbox Boss Confirms More Steam Releases Coming, Discusses PC Struggles

Xbox Boss Confirms More Steam Releases Coming, Discusses PC Struggles

Appearing on GameSpot sister site Giant Bomb’s E3 livestream tonight, Xbox boss Phil Spencer talked about Microsoft’s efforts in the PC gaming space. He started off by discussing one of PC gaming’s biggest players, Steam, and how Microsoft will release more of its games on it.

“I look at Steam today, it’s on an incredible growth trajectory. It’s a massive force in gaming; a positive force. I think it will be bigger a year from now than it is today. And five years later it will still be bigger again,” he said. “I look at Valve as an important [independent software vendor] for us on Windows. They are a critical part of gaming’s success on Windows. I don’t think Valve’s hurt by not having our first-party games in their store right now. They’re doing incredible well. We will ship games on Steam again.”

Also in the interview, Spencer stressed that, while Microsoft will put some of its future games on Steam (he didn’t say which ones), he is also committed to further building out Microsoft’s own Xbox store on PC. “I want to build a store; there’s no doubt about that,” he said.

Microsoft’s PC game releases on the Windows Store haven’t all gone too well, Spencer admitted.

“They all haven’t gone swimmingly. Some of them have gone well,” he explained. “Forza 6 Apex did well. Quantum Break wasn’t our best PC release. Killer Instinct did well on PC. Gears of War Ultimate Edition was OK–we definitely learned there.”

Speaking generally about Steam, Spencer added, “There’s going to be areas where we cooperate and there’s going to be areas where we compete. The end result is better for gamers.”

Some Microsoft-published games on Steam include Age of Empires II HD and Ori and the Blind Forest. One game that’s not there is Quantum Break–Valve isn’t missing out, Spencer said. “I think they’re doing fine without Quantum Break in their store,” he explained.

Additionally, Spencer addressed some of the concerns people, including Epic Games founder Tim Sweeney, have about Microsoft’s Universal Windows Platform.

“There’s still definitely concern that UWP and our store are somehow linked in a way that is nefarious. It’s not,” he stated.

Sweeney previously accused Microsoft of monopolizing PC development with the Universal Windows Platform. In the interview tonight, Spencer said he is on good terms with Sweeney, calling him a close friend and someone he speaks with frequently.

One other interesting thing to note from the interview was that Spencer revealed he demonstrated the new, more powerful Xbox Scorpio console to Valve higher-ups.
