Lessons From the Opening Hours of Final Fantasy 15

The opening hours of Final Fantasy XV are a rollercoaster. You enter the world of protagonist Noctis en media res, everything in complete turmoil and already going to hell. The first chapters prioritize world-building and establishing characters’ standing with one another–we see Noctis, his father, his friends, and his enemies in intimate detail, as they banter and barter and set out on their way. There is little in the way of formal tutorials for combat and magic, but rather the game lets you learn as you go, offering a brief on screen pop-up when you come across a new system or element.

Although the game was recently delayed from September 30 to November 29, there isn’t a cause for worry here; while the build I played was fairly recent but not yet final, it looked incredible. The rural hills of rock and sand, the bright oasis of Hammerhead, the craigy beach and open ocean–it all opened up before me like a window into our own world. Final Fantasy XV looks like a place you could visit just by hopping into your car, picking a direction, and setting forth.

Below is everything gleaned from those first few hours, from proper names to how magic works to just what Luna’s dogs are doing.

    3124589-ffxv_gamescom_stills_54.png

The overall world of Final Fantasy XV is called Eos. Lucius, Nifelheim, Tenebrae and Altissa are just a few countries on this large planet.

The ability tree is called the Astralsphere. This functions similar to the Sphere Grid in Final Fantasy X or the Crystarium in Final Fantasy XIII. You gain Ability Points, or AP, through combat, party actions, and some dialogue events, and these points are spent unlocking new abilities laid out on a web.

There are four types of magic elements. These are Fire, Ice, Thunder, and Wild. “Wild” magic is the result of combining and crafting the other three magic types.

    3124606-ffxv_gamescom_stills_18.png

You draw magic from crystals and craft your spells. Scattered through the world are fire, ice, and thunder crystals. When you happen upon a patch of these, you can draw and store magic from them, similar to the Draw system in Final Fantasy VIII. But this raw elemental power can’t be used; it has to be crafted with other elements and put into a flask (an item you can get) before you can equip a character with the spell.

Crafting spells can get pretty fancy. The magic-crafting system is similar to Rikku’s Mix Overdrive from Final Fantasy X. To make more powerful spells or give them additional elementary properties–such as healing your character at the moment the spell is cast–you can craft them with items like Potions, Phoenix Downs, and Elixirs. Spell combinations including: Tricast, a mix of one element type plus two more of another element type, like two fire and one thunder; Healcast, one element like Fire plus a Potion; and Unicast, a mix of one each of all three elements. Spells get more powerful the more you mix with them.

Magic must charge before you can use it. Your magic charges up while you’re in combat. Once it’s ready to use, the UI will indicate this with a circular mark on a picture of the d-pad, above whichever directional you mapped it to. You have to aim each magic attack manually by focusing a glowing target over your designated enemy. But make sure there’s enough distance between you and spell; if you’re too close, your clothes will burn or freeze, depending on the element.

    3124617-ffxv_gamescom_stills_47.png3124617-ffxv_gamescom_stills_47.png

The game records your magic crafting history, so you can scroll through your spell history and re-craft more of your favorites. This is such a neat addition, and comes in handy when you don’t feel like keeping detailed physical notes of your spells.

In combat, Noctis can team up with a pal for a more powerful attack. Ignis’ Mark ability will sink throwing knives into a handful of enemies, allowing Noctis to rapidly warp strike between them all in one fell swoop. Gladiolus’ special attack requires a short timed quick-time event to land a devastating blow. And Prompto’s special utilizes his marksman ability, focusing on a target for a powerful shot from his gun.

For dialogue trees with NPCs, Noctis has the option to consult his friends. If speaking with an NPC offers dialogue options and you’re not sure what to pick, sometimes you can choose to “Ask your friends.” Here, Ignis or another will chime in with advice on what you should do next. Be warned though; choosing this action means this is the path you will take.

The clothes the boys start off wearing in the beginning of the game are called Crownsguard fatigues. These are, apparently, the outfits worn by protectors of the royal family. Noctis and his pals are wearing them to avoid suspicion and travel incognito.

    3124620-ffxv_gamescom_stills_09.png3124620-ffxv_gamescom_stills_09.png

Every settlement has a diner, and every diner has a unique menu. In Hammerhead, I could purchase chili con carne or a jambalaya from a diner next to Cindy and Cid’s mechanic shop. Both of these items, if consumed, offer different stat boosts good for a healthy swathe of in-game time. The chili, for example, would give my party an attack boost as well as add 50 points to our health bars, and the jambalaya would up our attack and HP as well as add a health regeneration buff. In Galdin Key, along the shore, you can buy dishes made of oysters and boiled crap that offer their own mix of status boosts and buffs.

Talking to diner staff also reveals key locations on your map. The servers behind the counter in each location will mark the following places on your map if you choose to talk to them: havens (for resting), parking spots for the Regalia, outposts, and procurement points. The latter includes places to draw elemental magic from crystals, mineral deposits, and treasure spots.

Diner staff are also the people to talk to you if you want to initiate a hunt or eat. In general, the best place to eat in a settlement is the best place to figure out where to go and what to do.

    3124621-ffxv_gamescom_stills_02.png3124621-ffxv_gamescom_stills_02.png

Gladiolus puts on a shirt. At least once.

Noctis recovers HP in four ways: using an item, using Warp Strike to get to higher ground and rest for a few moments, taking cover and hiding from the enemy, or by waiting patiently for one of his friends to run over and heal him. The latter is definitely the most dangerous of the three, but during the demo it was fairly common for Gladiolus, Prompto, and Ignis to immediately run to Noctis when he was down.

You can customize the Regalia’s colors. Noctis’ car has three places where you can change the color: the body, interior, and wheel color. White with gold rims is a good look for the Regalia, just as an example. You can also add decals and what looks like additional components later in the game.

Luna’s dog Umbra will find Noctis out in the world. Without sharing any spoilers, the dark-furred pup will find you with some special deliveries as you travel. Luna’s other dog, Pryna, however, stays with her lady.

    3124622-ffxv_gamescom_stills_25.png3124622-ffxv_gamescom_stills_25.png

You can drive the car manually as Noctis or let Ignis drive on auto. Manually driving, however, isn’t like the driving you find in racing games. There are designated buttons for parking and making a U-turn, and you can’t crash the car into another vehicle or drive off-road. The game will course-correct you if you drive into oncoming traffic and won’t let you smash into anything. Which is probably better off–the Regalia gets dirty enough as it is.

Only Noctis can drive during the game’s nighttime. Ignis won’t drive when the daemons are roaming. What a baby.

You’ll want to watch the Brotherhood anime if you want to understand certain references. In conversation, the boys allude to events from their past. These are covered in detail in the tie-in anime, and if you’re looking for more stories about young Noctis and friends, it’s worth a look for the backstory the series provides.

References to the real world transcend brands. For example, a newspaper reveals to Noctis that Lunafreya’s wedding dress is being made by lauded real-world fashion designer Vivienne Westwood. Amazing.

Events in the story can happen in the nighttime or daytime, depending on when you arrive at your destination. After failing to save, I replayed an area both in the daytime and nighttime, with the same story-centric event playing out in the different lighting.

  • Mafia 3 Story Expansions Announced, Focus on Vietnam, Ritualistic Killings, and More

Mafia 3 Story Expansions Announced, Focus on Vietnam, Ritualistic Killings, and More

Today during a PAX West panel, 2K Games announced the first details on Mafia III‘s post-launch DLC. There will be free content as well as paid story expansions.

In terms of the free DLC, players can look forward to new outfits for main character Lincoln Clay. There will also be new weapons through the Judge, Jury, and Executioner pack, which comes out 30 days after the game launches. Additionally, Mafia III’s post-launch DLC will include vehicle customization options like new wheels, personalized license plates, and paint jobs. There will be performance-boosters, too.

Also along the lines of cars, Mafia III will add free races that yield bonuses such as money and additional customization options for players who come out on top. There will be even more free DLC outside of all of this, 2K said in a blog post.

As for the story expansions, there will be multiple add-ons that are “wholly separate experiences that reveal more about Lincoln Clay’s time in New Bordeaux.”

2K teased, “As these stories will reveal, the Italian Mafia isn’t the only threat Lincoln faces…”

Here is a rundown of Mafia III’s three paid expansions, with descriptions written by 2K:

    “Faster, Baby!”

    • Fast cars, dramatic chases, and stunt driving take center stage as Lincoln joins forces with his former flame, Roxy Laveau, to take down a corrupt Sheriff terrorizing Civil Rights activists on the outskirts of New Bordeaux.

    “Sign of the Times”

    • A string of ritualistic killings has New Bordeaux on the edge of terror. At Father James’ request, Lincoln agrees to hunt down the cult responsible, a quest that will take him from the dark heart of the old bayou to the drug-ridden counterculture of the inner city.

    “Stones Unturned”

    • When a merciless rival resurfaces in New Bordeaux, Lincoln must join forces with CIA agent John Donovan to settle a blood feud that began in the war-torn jungles of Vietnam.

These story expansions will include “new activities” and more vehicles, weapons, outfits, and races based on their respective themes. To get a closer look at Mafia III’s DLC, click through the images in the gallery above.

The three Mafia III expansions are included with the game’s $30 DLC pass. You can buy them individually, but if you’re sure you want all three, the season pass is the way to go. 2K says it will cost $40 to buy them individually.

A new trailer was also shown during the panel; it was captured by DualShockers and can be seen below.

Mafia III launches on October 7 for PlayStation 4, Xbox One, and PC.

  • Three New For Honor Trailers Show Off Samurai, Viking, and Knight Warriors

Ubisoft debuted three new For Honor trailers today at PAX West, focusing on the Samurai, Viking, and Knight classes. The publisher also released official descriptions for each class.

The first video shows off Kensei from the Samurai faction. Kensei is one of six playable characters for the game’s upcoming alpha testing period. As you can see, his sword is devastatingly powerful, capable of lopping off a head if used properly.

The second video offers a look at the Raider of the Viking faction. This character, who looks incredibly powerful and wields a huge battle-ax, is also playable in the alpha. Finally, the third video spotlights the Warden of the Knight group, another playable character for the alpha.

Scroll down to see those videos, while immediately below are the official descriptions, as written by Ubisoft.

    • Samurai: History has not been kind to the Samurai. After losing their homeland to sea and fire, the nomadic warriors have ceased their wandering and have rebuilt themselves a new nation under a mighty Emperor.
    • Raider: Previously thought to have vanished, the Vikings have returned to plunder, take new lands, and reclaim their ancient homeland in the north.
    • Knight: Scattered for centuries, the Knights have begun at last to gather again under a single banner: that of the Iron Legion.

As announced previously, the For Honor alpha runs September 15-18. This is a closed alpha, so there is no guarantee that you’ll get in. You can sign up for a chance to play the alpha at the game’s website.

For Honor launches for PS4, Xbox One, and PC on February 14, 2017–Valentine’s Day.

  • Friday the 13th Game's New Trailer Shows Off Brutal Executions

Friday the 13th Game's New Trailer Shows Off Brutal Executions

When the new Friday the 13th game was announced, its developers said they didn’t plan to hold back on the blood and gore. That definitely appears to be the case, as a new trailer for the game released at PAX West is incredibly brutal and unsettling.

Maybe don’t watch if you’re squeamish; some of the death sequences are horrific, like when Jason pushes someone’s eyeballs into their face and lodges a pick-axe into an unfortunate soul’s neck. If you’re up for it, the video is above.

Friday the 13th: The Game began its life as a game called Slasher Vol 1: Summer Camp before the Friday the 13th franchise’s rights-holders, including Sean Cunningham, contacted developer Gun Media. The rights were given to Gun Media for free, and the game eventually morphed into a full-blown Friday the 13th title.

It’s a multiplayer game where one person plays as Jason, while the others take on the role of campers. Some of the archetypes for characters include “the girl next door” and “the jock,” among others.

    3124509-13.jpg

Friday the 13th: The Game is tentatively scheduled to launch in October 2016 for Xbox One, PS4, and PC. For more on the game, which was successfully funded on Kickstarter, read GameSpot’s previous coverage.

  • Nintendo NX Will Use Cartridges, Report Says

Nintendo’s NX using cartridges has been reported in the past. Now, it sounds even more likely as the Wall Street Journal has heard from “people familiar with the matter” that the company’s next console will pass on discs.

It’s important to note that Nintendo’s current handheld, the 3DS, also uses cartridges, meaning we could see something similar to that as opposed to the larger cartridges used by the Super Nintendo and N64.

The main problem with cartridges is that they normally carry less data than discs–PS4 and Xbox One game discs can store up to 50 GB of data and often require further installs on the consoles’ hard drives. It’s currently unclear how much data an NX cartridge will hold, if real.

Other reports have said the NX is a powerful handheld device with detachable controller modules–these attach to both sides of the screen. Additionally, the system can be docked and used on televisions.

This news comes a day after Nintendo’s latest Direct, which focused on the 3DS. Several games were announced including 3DS versions of Super Mario Maker and Yoshi’s Woolly World, in addition to new Pikmin and Mario Sports titles.

The NX is expected to release in March 2017. The next games in the Legend of Zelda series, Breath of the Wild, is set to launch simultaneously next year on both the NX and Wii U.

  • WWE Power Moves August: The Miz Gets Angry, Bayley Teams With New Day, and More

WWE Power Moves August: The Miz Gets Angry, Bayley Teams With New Day, and More

    3124044-deck.jpg

Every month, WWE provides its fans with hours upon hours of entertainment between Raw, Smackdown, NXT, a monthly PPV, pre and post shows for almost every event, and tons of online content from the company. That is a lot for any fan, whether casual or hardcore, to devote their time to.

Luckily, we’ve sifted through the past month and found some of the most entertaining moments from the past month, from whole matches and promos, to one particular moment that got the wrestling world talking this past month.

Let’s check out the 8 most entertaining moments from August that evoked an emotional response from the fanbase. Plus, a few videos in case you missed those moments. Note: Aside from WWE’s reality programming, we’re skipping out on the Cruiserweight Classic. Yes, it’s awesome, but it will not be included.

    8. Smackdown and Raw FINALLY Feel Like Separate Shows

    3123978-untitled-2.jpg

Raw and Smackdown are WWE’s premiere, weekly shows. For years, the entire WWE roster appeared on both shows, every week. In addition, Smackdown became more of a recap of what happened on Raw the past week, rather than its own weekly show. It had no identity.

Since the draft and split of the shows on July 18 & 19, Smackdown had the challenge of becoming a unique show. August is the first full month since the change, and it’s proving to be a success. While Raw may have the stronger roster, there are still a lot of stars that have drawing power on Smackdown, like AJ Styles, John Cena, The Miz, and more. Many fans of WWE were skeptical of how this would all play out, but after watching Smackdown in August, it’s easy to say it’s been a success.

    7. Ember Moon’s Debut

During the past year, NXT has lost a giant chunk of its women’s roster: Charlotte, Sasha Banks, Becky Lynch, Alexa Bliss, Dana Brooke, Eva Marie, Nia Jax, Carmella, and most recently, Bayley. Asuka is still holding down the fort, but it feels like there’s a bit of a void in the Women’s Division, and there haven’t been any real standouts as of late.

That all changed during NXT Takeover: Brooklyn II when Ember Moon debuted. Not to take anything away from her opponent, Billie Kay, who is a powerhouse, but Moon was exciting to watch, once the match got on the right track. Aside from a few sloppy spots early on, Moon wowed the crowd with a springboard crossbody. Her finisher got a huge reaction from the crowd, too. From the top rope, she flipped over Kay and delivered a Stunner. Both Moon and Kay are something to get excited about in NXT.

    6. Bayley Teaming With The New Day

Bayley leaving NXT was quite the bummer. However, on the August 29 episode of Raw, Bayley found herself making three new best friends to hug, while walking backstage: The New Day. What happened next was nothing short of the most delightful moment in WWE television in months, as they chatted it up, then got into it with Dana Brooke, leading to a mixed tag match with Brooke, Gallows, and Anderson.

Bringing the charismatic and overtly-optimistic Bayley onto Raw could have been a bit of a challenge, as many fans that watch Raw have no clue who she is. However, WWE made the wonderful move of having her team up with The New Day. Personality-wise, she’s a perfect fit, and there are probably lots of fans that would love to see her be part of this group, week-to-week.

    5. Chris Jericho and Kevin Owens

During the past month, Kevin Owens and Chris Jericho started teaming up. At the time, the only thing they really had in common was they were both Canadian. However, as the month as rolled on, the two worked well off of each other, and the promos they’ve been cutting are giving fans a lot more insight into who their characters are right now.

At first, this whole team-up didn’t make sense, but it’s really been fun to watch these two play off of each other. They’re great on the mic, and they’re great in the ring. Just check out their interview after SummerSlam (above). More than anything else, this new angle breathed new life into both of these stars.

    4. Anderson and Gallows’ New Gimmick

Before the brand split, both Gallows and Anderson were AJ Styles’ lackeys, trying to recapture the magic of when they were all in the Bullet Club together in New Japan Pro Wrestling. It worked, but when Styles went to Smackdown and Gallows and Anderson went to Raw, something had to change. So, they became doctors, of sorts, cutting promos about “ringpostitus,” which you contract when you take a ringpost to the crotch.

What makes this gimmick work is how straight-faced these two are when they deliver their lines. It’s two guys, coming into their own, but delivering some funny stuff, seriously. Where this angle shines is the fact they’re in a rivalry with The New Day, who are easily the most humorous group currently in the company. This duo could continue to go the “tough guy” route but letting their personalities shine is what gets these two on the list.

    3. Eva Marie’s Angle Works

Eva Marie is the Total Diva people seem to love to hate. Over the past year, we’ve heard the chants of “You can’t wrestle” week after week on NXT, as she developed her character. Now that she’s on Smackdown, she’s got a whole new gimmick. Marie’s entrance has her own announcer talks about how great she is, and she takes her time getting to the ring, too. However, that’s not all. During August, she has fought a total of zero times because of injuries, wardrobe malfunctions, and being on vacation during SummerSlam, even though we all know she was suspended.

This whole new gimmick of coming up with reasons not to wrestle is hilarious. It’s giving Smackdown the much-needed entertainment value to make it a standalone show. Sure, she isn’t wrestling at all, but the over-the-top attitude and constant refusal to wrestle is funny and interesting. It’s getting people talking about the show and the character.

    2. NXT Takeover: Brooklyn II

One of WWE’s premiere PPVs, SummerSlam, took place in Brooklyn this year. It had some high and low points, but the best part of SummerSlam weekend was NXT Takeover: Brooklyn II. Following up last year’s Takeover event, which was also at the Barclay’s Center, Takeover highlighted new and old talent from WWE’s developmental program.

We’ve already focused on one aspect of the event, and the rest of it was exactly what WWE fans are looking for. We saw the debut of Bobby Roode, who had the most glorious entrance in recent memory (video above, for obvious reasons). Additionally, there were three great championship matches. Once again, NXT put on a memorable summer event that you’ll want to watch again and again. In addition, Shinsuke Nakamura and Samoa Joe put on one hell of a match, worthy of the main event.

    1. The Miz’s Breakdown on Talking Smack

Normally, when people talk about The Miz, it’s about what they don’t like about the character, which is bizarre because he’s so awesome. During one of WWE’s post-shows, Talking Smack, Smackdown GM Daniel Bryan told The Miz he wrestles like a coward, like someone who is afraid to get hit. The Miz took offense and went off on Bryan. The whole video segment is above, and it’s something you need to watch.

There was nothing else during August that had this big of an emotional impact on the viewer. It was the most talked about moment, followed by the Orton/Lesnar finish, for good reason. It seems there’s a lot of real emotion behind Miz’s passionate speech, as tears welled up in his eyes. Miz’s rant against Bryan had a lot of eye-opening points, including telling Bryan, in so many words, that he doesn’t have the same passion for being in ring as Bryan says he does. Again, watch the video.

That’s all for this month’s WWE Power Moves. Let us know what you thought were the most entertaining moments in August, and we’ll see you next month.

  • Activision Promising "Additional Game Reveals" for Call of Duty Event Today

Activision Promising "Additional Game Reveals" for Call of Duty Event Today

Activision’s Call of Duty fan event, Call of Duty XP, kicks off today in California. In a news release sent out this morning, the publisher teased that the show’s opening briefing will feature “additional game reveals,” as well as some kind of “news” and more. Additionally, Activision will for the first time show off Call of Duty: Infinite Warfare and Call of Duty Remastered‘s multiplayer modes during the event.

The briefing kicks off at 10 AM PT / 1 PM ET and you can watch it live on GameSpot.

    3056972-codmw remastered_war pig_wm.jpg

Activision did not say if the “game reveals” are new features for Infinite Warfare and/or Modern Warfare Remastered or completely new games. Whatever the case, we’d expect them to be related to Call of Duty, given Call of Duty XP is focused completely on the juggernaut shooter series. GameSpot will bring you all the news from the show as it’s announced; we also have editors on the ground at the event itself.

Call of Duty: Infinite Warfare launches on November 4 for PlayStation 4, Xbox One, and PC. Modern Warfare Remastered, the remastered version of 2007’s Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare, is included with premium versions of Infinite Warfare, which start at $80. Activision has said Modern Warfare Remastered will not be sold on its own, but whether or not that is true forever remains to be seen.
