  • N64 Emulator Removed From Xbox One

N64 Emulator Removed From Xbox One

News about a Nintendo 64 app for Xbox One emerged this week on Reddit. It apparently let you play games from the classic system, including Super Mario 64 and Mario Kart 64.

Now, as you might have imagined, the app has been removed, though people who have it installed can reportedly continue to use it.

    284567-markrt64_005.jpg

As reported by Eurogamer, the app is called Win64e10. It was actually released over the weekend, according to people on Reddit, though buzz didn’t really build until days later. According to the site, the app, which cost the equivalent of £7.69, was “hidden on the marketplace as it had not received a Microsoft-approved release.” If you knew the app’s name, however, you could apparently find it.

Microsoft has now stepped in to pull down the app. People on Reddit report that it still works for those who have it installed, though it has some issues that future patches could have addressed. You can see a YouTube video of how the app works here.

An Xbox One update that came out this year for Xbox One introduced support for the Universal Windows Platform, which basically made it possible for Windows Store apps to run on Xbox One as well. As this example shows, Microsoft is likely to take action against apps of questionable nature, like this one.

GameSpot has contacted Microsoft in an attempt to get more details. We will update this post with anything we hear back.

  • Windows 10 Reaches at Least 400 Million Installs Across All Devices

Windows 10 Reaches at Least 400 Million Installs Across All Devices

Microsoft’s newest operating system, Windows 10, is now installed on at least 400 million devices around the world, the company said, as reported by GameSpot sister site ZDNet. The figure, which is up from 350 million at the end of June, is accurate as of September 26.

It counts the number of “active devices,” so the figure may actually be even higher. An active device, according to Microsoft’s wording, is one that has been active in the past 28 days. The figure counts active devices across all Windows 10 devices, including PC, tablet, phone, Xbox One, and HoloLens.

    3135095-win10.jpg

At one time, Microsoft said Windows 10 was on the “fastest growth trajectory of any version of Windows ever.” However, earlier this year, Microsoft said it was scaling back its goal to get Windows 10 running on one billion devices by 2018. That’s now not expected to happen until sometime later.

Windows executive Yusuf Mehdi mentioned recently that customer satisfaction around Windows 10 is “higher than any previous version of Windows.”

However, it’s unclear how Microsoft measured satisfaction, and not everyone has been thrilled with Microsoft’s efforts to encourage them to upgrade to Windows 10. One woman sued the company over an unwanted upgrade and ended up receiving a $10,000 reward from Microsoft. That was of course an extreme circumstance and far from the norm, however.

The Xbox One is considered a Windows 10 device as of November 2015, as that’s when the New Xbox One Experience update introduced it as the console’s underlying OS.

Go to ZDNet to get the full story and all the context.

Microsoft offered Windows 10 as a free upgrade to select Windows 7 and Windows 8 users. This offered expired at the end of July.

  • Ben Affleck's Batman Movie is "a Year and a Half Out"

Ben Affleck's Batman Movie is "a Year and a Half Out"

While Batman actor Ben Affleck continues to work on Justice League, pre-production on the standalone Batman movie that he will direct and star in has begun. In the last few weeks test we’ve seen rogue “test” footage and casting news, and now Time Warner CEO Jeff Bewkes has hinted at when we might see the film.

    3135075-bat.jpg

As reported by Comicbook.com, Bewkes was speaking at an investor conference where he revealed that the movie was 18 months away. “The reboot of Batman with Ben Affleck was a big success,” he said, in reference to the positive reaction to Affleck’s portrayal of the character in this year’s Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice. “He’s going to be [executive producer] on Justice League and that’s helpful to that team.”

“Ben announced a Batman movie [that] he’s going to direct, star, write for. I think it’s a year and a half out. So, the strategy worked.”

It is unclear if Bewkes was referring to a release of the Batman movie in 18 months time, or whether that would be when production begins. However, given the DC schedule already has films lined up until 2020, it seems unlikely that the Batman movie would be released in 2018.

Last month, Affleck released some early test footage of Deathstroke, who is confirmed as the villain in his Batman film. A week later, it was confirmed that Joe Manganiello had been cast in the role.

Deathstroke first appeared in a 1980 issue of The New Teen Titans, and the armored mercenary has gone on to appear in a wide variety of DC comics over the years. He is associated with Batman, and is a main adversary to the Green Arrow. On TV, he recently appeared in Season 2 of the CW show Arrow, played by Manu Bennett. He also featured prominently in last year’s Batman: Arkham Knight.

  • Future Overwatch Changes Will Improve Symmetra

Overwatch director Jeff Kaplan has said the development team is looking at ways to improve Symmetra, a hero that has fallen out of favour among players. According to Kaplan, the light-bending support character is “one of [the] least-played heroes” due to her very situational applications.

Speaking to Business Insider, Kaplan said changes to the character are “definitely on our list, but I don’t think we’ll see a change go live until probably some time in November.” He went on to address the idea that Symmetra wasn’t being used very much by players.

“You know, Symmetra’s a really interesting hero to talk about,” he said. “She’s a hero who’s very situational and she actually gets played a fair bit, but she gets switched off of. What happens commonly is players will play her on defense on the first part of a point, and then when they’ve lost that point, then they’ll switch off of Symmetra. So, that definitely impacts her play time when you’re looking at the stats.”

The situational nature of Symmetra is something that Kaplan says is “not really desirable” to Blizzard, which is why the studio will be tweaking the character. He wasn’t ready to talk about the nature of the changes, however.

“I don’t have anything really specific to talk about right now, other than she is kind of an internal project right now,” he said. “She is a hero we’d like to make some changes to. I think those changes wouldn’t see the light of day until November, though, because we want to do a bunch of internal testing.

“It’s one thing when we do something [minor]–like, we have a change to Junkrat on the [Public Test Realm] where his Ultimate activates faster, but it’s a very incremental, safe change–whereas the type of changes we think need to happen to Symmetra require a lot more internal testing and discussion.”

In related news, Blizzard recently announced it is transitioning away from with the Battle.net name over the next few months. Services on its digital platform will continue as normal, however.

“Given that built-in multiplayer support is a well-understood concept and more of a normal expectation these days, there isn’t as much of a need to maintain a separate identity for what is essentially our networking technology,” it said.

  • Beyond Good & Evil Director Teasing Fans With New Artwork

Beyond Good & Evil Director Teasing Fans With New Artwork

Michel Ancel, creator of Beyond Good & Evil, has reignited speculation that a sequel is in development at Ubisoft. Ancel posted artwork on Instagram which features a male engineer-type character with a pig sitting on his shoulder.

Fans of the first Beyond Good & Evil have theorised that the pig could be a young version of Pey’j, the caretaker of protagonist Jade. It may also be an entirely new character belonging to the same Sus Sapiens species as Jade. As for the male, some fans believe he could be Jade’s father.

    3135067-4990764084-14369.jpg

The image is accompanied by a caption that reads “Somewhere in system 4 … Thanks Ubisoft for making this possible!”

It’s unclear what “System 4” is a reference to as of yet.

The last time Ubisoft officially showed Beyond Good & Evil 2 was in 2009 and it was believed that the project had been cancelled.

At E3 2016, Ubisoft chief executive Yves Guillemot confirmed Beyond Good & Evil 2 is still alive, but didn’t outright confirm it’s in active development or when we’d see it get revealed.

“It’s difficult to say,” Guillemot said. “Michel is working on it, but he’s doing two games at the same time–he’s doing Wild at the same time. It’s coming along, but he has to spend more time on it, so we can see it faster.”

More recently, speaking in an interview with GameSpot, Guillemot explained why Ubisoft isn’t rushing to show the game.

“It’s not only the desires that are important, it’s can our team come up with something that will be a revolution,” he said. “You don’t just want Beyond Good & Evil 2, you want a fantastic Beyond Good & Evil 2. You don’t want us to bring it back as something that isn’t perfect. That’s a challenge we’re facing; we have to come back with something crazy and something that will be great.”

  • Simpsons Season 28 Debut Had Arnold Palmer Reference That Couldn't be Pulled in Time

Last night’s Season 28 debut of The Simpsons contained a reference to golf legend Arnold Palmer, who passed away that day at age 87. Obviously, this was completely coincidental, as production on the episode wrapped up months ago, but it was still something of an odd moment for those who watched.

The joke was innocent, referencing the Arnold Palmer drink that the esteemed and beloved golfer made famous. Here is the clip, which sees Homer talking about him and Carl filling waterguns with lemonade and iced tea respectively to “Arnold Palmer” their friend Lenny (via EW):

There was an Arnold Palmer reference tonight on The Simpsons. So weird. pic.twitter.com/4obYfm2B5T

    — Kirk Nawrotzky (@KirkNawrotzky) September 26, 2016

Marge doesn’t seem very impressed. Homer goes on to explain, “Arnold Palmer was a golfer, and he made up this drink where it’s not a full glass of lemonade or a full glass of iced tea.”

Simpsons showrunner Al Jean wrote on Twitter last night after news of Palmer’s passing emerged, “v v sorry to learn of death of Arnold Palmer. What a giant.” Asked if the joke could be pulled in time for the west coast edition, Jean said that wasn’t possible. “Of course I wish I could but it’s too late. One if [sic] the all-time greats in any sport,” he said.

Palmer, who won 62 times on the PGA Tour, including four Masters victories (of his seven total Major titles), passed away Sunday in Pittsburgh. He had been in declining health. He died one day before he was scheduled to have heart surgery, according to the Pittsburgh Post Gazette.

  • Transformers 5: Director Michael Bay Comments on Nazi Flag Controversy

Transformers 5: Director Michael Bay Comments on Nazi Flag Controversy

The next Transformers movie is currently shooting in the UK, and causing some controversy. Transformers: The Last Knight is using Blenheim Palace in Oxfordshire as a location, but the fact that the former home of wartime Prime Minister Winston Churchill has been draped in Nazi flags has led to some to speculate that Churchill might not be too happy about it. Now director Michael Bay has commented on the issue.

    3134627-zz26bf2be1.jpg

Speaking to the BBC, Bay said: “I just want to say, people were not fortunate enough to read the script, and they don’t know that Churchill in this movie is a big hero. And Churchill would be smiling about Last Knight.

“They haven’t seen the movie, they don’t know the ending, and they don’t know how Churchill is a hero in this movie. So, as the staff said, ‘He’d be smiling right now.’”

It had already been reported that King Arthur would feature in The Last Knight, so the news that Winston Churchill might also feature only adds to the mystery of the movie’s storyline

Last week, star Mark Wahlberg also revealed that a new type of Transformer will appear, a miniature version of the popular Dinobots. “[The film] is a cool new story, it’s kind of like a man on the run,” he said during a Facebook Q&A. “We got a cool new cast, cool new robots, cool new villains, and some cool new Dinobots. I think you guys are really going to go crazy for the Mini-Dinobots.”

Transformers: The Last Knight hits theaters on June 23, 2017. Wahlberg will be joined by Anthony Hopkins, Josh Duhamel, Stanley Tucci, and John Goodman.

Paramount will be releasing a newTransformers movie every year until at least 2019. The studio has already announced release dates for the two movies following The Last Knight: Transformers 6 (expected to be a Bumblebee spinoff) is scheduled to debut on June 8, 2018, while Transformers 7 will follow on June 28, 2019.

  • Watch Sony's Cool PlayStation Store Short Film

Sony has released a new promotion video for the PlayStation Store–and it’s pretty good.

The 30-second video follows a magical merchant who quips, “What do I sell? I sell glorious pandemonium, instant immortality, mastery of over time and space, and the occasional nightmare.” He adds: “What I sell is life and death itself. The real question is: what are you looking for?”

The video that morphs into gameplay from titles like Horizon: Zero Dawn, Watch Dogs 2, and Call of Duty: Infinite Warfare. Zero Dawn is a PS4-exclusive, while Infinite Warfare and Watch Dogs 2 have co-marketing deals in place for PS4, so it’s no surprise to see those in this video.

It’s a pretty clever and intriguing way to promote a digital store, as it makes the suggestion that the PlayStation Store has everything you might be looking for, even if that may exactly be the case. It’s now the fall season, so expect more advertisements from the big players as we head into the holidays.

  • Magnificent Seven Wins US Box Office With $35M, a Career Best for Director

Magnificent Seven Wins US Box Office With $35M, a Career Best for Director

The new western The Magnificent Seven officially opened in theaters on Friday and raked in $35 million for its opening weekend in the US, Sony has announced. That made it the No. 1 movie of the weekend domestically, with new animated film Storks landing in the No. 2 position with $21.8 million.

According to Deadline, which supplied the numbers, The Magnificent Seven‘s $35 million is a career-best opening weekend domestic figure for director Antoine Fuqua. His previous record-holder was The Equalizer, which pulled in $34.1 million for its opening weekend back in 2014.

    3134624-magnificent.jpg

It’s the third-highest opening for star Denzel Washington, following Safe House ($40.2 million) and American Gangster ($43.6 million), according to Box Office Mojo. $35 million is also the second-best debut for a western, following Cowboys & Aliens, which made $36.4 million for its opening.

Chris Pratt (Guardians of the Galaxy) and and Ethan Hawke (Training Day) also star in the film. The movie follows seven gunslingers as they defend a small town from a mining tycoon and his cronies, who intend on taking control of the town by force.

GameSpot critic Randolph Ramsay reviewed The Magnificent Seven and said, “It’s certainly fun and cheer-worthy as the honorable good guys stand against the deeds of evil men. And its dedication to the well-trodden path makes it enjoyable, but not necessarily memorable. The Magnificent Seven is a bubblegum western in the best way possible, and it’s about time we had another one of those mosey into town.”

The Magnificent Seven‘s $35 million opening is just ahead of expectations, which predicted the movie would make $32 million-$34 million.
