  • PS4 Experiencing Issues As PSN Is Partially Down

If you’re having trouble on PS4 right now, including playing games, it’s not just you. PlayStation Network is suffering from issues right now, Sony has confirmed, although there’s no word yet on how soon they will be resolved. [Update: PSN’s status page said earlier today that the service was working correctly again, but a newer update shows that every service except PlayStation Vue is having problems right now]

Sony’s PSN status page lists the Gaming and Social category as experiencing trouble right now. Specifically, it states, “You may have some difficulty launching games, applications, or online features.” PlayStation’s support account on Twitter also confirmed as much, saying, “We’re aware that users are having issues accessing some features on PSN. Thanks for your patience as we investigate.”

Indeed, a number of game companies have alerted players on Twitter that they may have trouble playing online right now. This appears to potentially affect everyone trying to play something on PSN on PS4 or PS3, though your miles may vary.

Neither Sony’s Twitter account nor status page offers any sense for how quickly this will be addressed. As always, it could be a matter of minutes or hours. We’ll report back as soon as we receive any more information.

  • New Robocop Movie Is In Development, Will Be Sequel To Original

New Robocop Movie Is In Development, Will Be Sequel To Original

Although Robocop is widely considered one of the best sci-fi movies of the 1980s, most fans would agree that the subsequent sequels and remakes have been disappointing. But it has now been reported that a new film is on the way, with original writer Ed Neumeier involved with its development.

Neumeier revealed that the plan was to make a sequel to the 1987 original, and hinted that it might ignore everything else. “We’re not supposed to say too much,” he told Zeitgeist. “There’s been a bunch of other Robocop movies and there was recently a remake. [But] I would say this would be kind of going back to the old Robocop we all love, starting there and going forward. So it’s a continuation really of the first movie in my mind. So it’s a little bit more of the old-school thing.”

    No Caption Provided

This is the first news about a new Robocop movie since 2015. Back then it was reported that the plan was to make a sequel to the 2014 remake. However Neumeier’s comments suggest that this is no longer the case.

The original Robocop was directed by Paul Verhoeven, and was followed by two sequels. 1990’s Robocop 2 was a box office hit but was critically panned, while 1993’s Robocop 3 turned many fans off by aiming for a younger audience. There were also two shortlived TV show in the 1990s, one live-action, the other animated. The 2014 remake was directed by José Padilha (Narcos) and starred Joel Kinnaman, Gary Oldman, and Michael Keaton.

In related news, the upcoming Terminator sequel is taking a similar approach by ignoring every movie in the long-running series since 1991’s Terminator 2. The film is to be directed by Deadpool‘s Tim Miller, with series creator James Cameron on board as producer. Original stars Arnold Schwarzenegger and Linda Hamilton are also returning, and the movie is set for a 2019 release.

  • Here's Why Monster Hunter World Isn't Coming To Nintendo Switch

Monster Hunter World is just days away from launching on PS4 and Xbox One, while a PC release is also coming later this year. But Capcom has so far not announced a Nintendo Switch version of the open-world game. The game’s co-directors, Kaname Fujioka and Yuya Tokuda, have now stated why they haven’t yet brought Monster Hunter World to Nintendo’s hybrid console, and if it could happen in the future.

“We don’t have any plans for the Switch at the moment,” the pair told IGN. “Part of the reason is that the title has been in development for almost four years. At the time we had to commit to our hardware choices, we decided on using the most powerful current generation consoles available at the time, which was PS4 and Xbox One. So [the decision was made] before the Switch was even announced or on sale.

“It’s also because for every title we decide what [hardware is the best fit] for the concept. We don’t just look at everything. It’s more like, ‘If we want to achieve this kind of game concept, where’s the best place to achieve that?’ For this title, the PS4 and Xbox One were the best fit for us.”

Monster Hunter World is coming to PS4 and Xbox One this Friday, January 26. Be warned: the game requires a day-one patch that’s pretty important, since you won’t be able to play online without it. The 1.01 update will weigh in at roughly 815 MB, though the exact file size will likely vary depending on which console you’re playing on. Most importantly, the update adds online multiplayer, event quests, chat, and other online features, meaning you won’t be able to play Monster Hunter World online with other players or download any additional content until you’ve installed the patch.

Monster Hunter World’s first big update, meanwhile, will arrive sometime this spring, adding the Deviljho monster. Capcom has also announced a retro Mega Man armor set for players’ Palico companions, as well as a PS4-exclusive set of Horizon: Zero Dawn gear. A special edition Monster Hunter PS4 Pro bundle is also on the way. For more on the upcoming RPG, check out some of our Monster Hunter World gameplay.

  • Dragon Ball FighterZ Review Roundup [Updated]

This is an especially exciting week for game releases, as two of the year’s most anticipated titles, Monster Hunter World and Dragon Ball FighterZ, are both set to launch on January 26. The latter is the new 2.5D Dragon Ball fighting game from Arc System Works, the studio behind Guilty Gear and BlazBlue, and it looks to be one of the best titles based on Akira Toriyama’s popular anime and manga series.

In GameSpot’s Dragon Ball FighterZ review in progress, critic Peter Brown called the game “an exciting revitalization of Dragon Ball Z’s glory days.” He added, “Even if you think Dragon Ball is old hat, and even if you’re intimidated by fighting games, there’s a good chance you’ll be drawn into the explosive action and personalities that expertly evoke the anime’s infectious spirit.”

Other reviews for Dragon Ball FighterZ have also begun appearing online ahead of the game’s release this Friday, and they’ve been similarly positive. We’ve collected a sample of Dragon Ball FighterZ reviews in our roundup below, which we’ll continue to update as more reviews are published closer to the game’s release. In the meantime, you can take a wider look at what critics think of Dragon Ball FighterZ on GameSpot sister site Metacritic.

    • Game: Dragon Ball FighterZ
    • Developer: Arc System Works
    • Platforms: PS4, Xbox One, PC
    • Release date: January 26
    • Price: $60 / £50

    GameSpot — 9/10

“FighterZ is complex and distinct enough to be enjoyed by fighting game competitors, but there’s no question that it’s been designed to tap into the hearts of Dragon Ball’s most dedicated fans, and no doubt those same qualities will win people over who’ve never given the series a chance. Where past games attempted to get there through huge character rosters and deliberately predictable trips down memory lane, FighterZ has bottled the essence of what makes the series’ characters, animation, and sense of humor so beloved and reconfigured it into something new: a Dragon Ball fighting game that can go toe-to-toe with the best of the genre.” — Peter Brown [Full review in progress]

    IGN — 8.5/10

“Between the accessible auto combos, homing attacks, and simplified command inputs, Dragon Ball FighterZ is an inviting gateway into the world of fighting games for newcomers–whether you’re a Dragon Ball fan or not. Those easy controls can open the door to some spammy behavior, but just as often it’s satisfying in a way that does right by the Dragon Ball name. Dragon Ball FighterZ has enough depth and complexity to glow as brilliantly as a Super Saiyan.” — Mitchell Saltzman [Full review]

    EGM — 9/10

“While there have been many fighting games based on the Dragon Ball franchise, Dragon Ball FighterZ marks a modern approach through the means of fast-paced action. From its breathtaking visuals to ease of gameplay mastery, the new fighter is a good stepping stone to expand the fan base of the genre. However, it may not satisfy players who are looking for complexity.” — Evan Slead [Full review]

Game Informer — Review in Progress

“The more I delve into training mode, the more I learn about FighterZ, which is great; before playing the full game, I was a little afraid Arc System Works was going to go a bit too simple to appeal to casual Dragon Ball fans, and I’m happy to be proven wrong. Despite the simple control scheme, there are plenty of ways you can approach your opponent, and I never felt completely helpless, or that any one option was overwhelmingly powerful. Complete novices will still have to do some genre learning, but the fundamentals are simple enough that it won’t be too much of a chore.” — Suriel Vazquez [Full review in progress]

    Eurogamer — Review in Progress

“Dragon Ball FighterZ, then, is the fighting game for everyone. Sure, it’s a fast-paced game, and with three-versus-three action the screen can get pretty busy at times, but Arc System Works’ effort to make the combat accessible means pretty much anyone can pick up their favourite few characters from Dragon Ball and get them to do cool and exciting stuff straight away. A few minutes spent in training mode and you’ll find yourself doing combos that approach the 100-hit mark–just from a few basic input commands.” — Wesley Yin-Poole [Full review in progress]

    VideoGamer — Review in Progress

“We’ve still got to do some online testing when the servers are up, but the offline lobby for Dragon Ball FighterZ suggests this is going to be a good ‘un. Whether or not you like fighting games or Dragon Ball, extremely dramatic villains and hench dudes with giant hair hurling fireballs at each other (all set to unceasing guitar solos) is kind of inherently enjoyable.” — Alice Bell [Full review in progress]

  • Dragon Ball FighterZ Easter Eggs: Here's All The Dramatic Finishes (So Far)

Arc System Works’ Dragon Ball FighterZ is almost here. The game recently had an open beta that will be available again before launch, and we recently showed off every super move. In the video above, you can see Easter eggs and every Dragon Ball Z-inspired finishing scene we’ve found so far.

These “Dramatic Scenes” recreate iconic moments from the series when certain stage, team, and fighting conditions are met. For example, landing the KO as Goku in a match against Frieza can trigger the famous Mighty Blast of Rage (or Angry Kamehameha) from the series.

Dragon Ball FighterZ follows a 3v3 format similar to more recent Marvel vs. Capcom games. It has a new story mode that seems to take place sometime after the Universe 6 Saga, and it introduces a brand-new character, Android 21. You can find out more about what to expect in our Dragon Ball FighterZ review in progress.

Dragon Ball FighterZ releases for PS4, Xbox One, and PC on January 26. There are currently 24 fighters confirmed for launch, and the game will have a season pass that adds eight more characters to the roster post-launch. If you want to test your Dragon Ball knowledge, be sure to check out the History of Dragon Ball Games.

  • Call Of Duty: WW2 Free Event Adds New Gear, Weapons, And A Division

Call of Duty: WWII‘s latest limited-time event has been announced for PS4, Xbox One, and PC, and it looks like a big one. Called The Resistance, it’s free and adds a bunch of new game modes and gear, as well as a new Division.

The highlight of the event is the new Division, also called the Resistance. As with the other Divisions, it functions as a playable class, with class-specific abilities and perks. This Division’s strengths are close-quarters combat, and its perks include a Pistol Tactical Knife, the ability to scramble nearby enemy mini-maps, and a mini-map symbol showing the direction of nearby foes.

The event also marks the return of the Prop Hunt game mode to Call of Duty. It’s similar to hide-and-seek, where one team takes control of inanimate objects and attempts to blend in and avoid the hunting team. You can also try out Demolition, a game mode similar to Search and Destroy, except with respawning turned on.

Finally, The Resistance also includes new weapons and gear. The Volkssturmgewehr assault rifle, the Orso SMG, and the Combat Knife can all be acquired by completing Orders. In addition, players can snag a free Resistance supply drop every week until the end of the event.

The event begins on January 23 and runs through February 27, and it coincides with the launch of the game’s first DLC pack (also called The Resistance) on January 30 on PS4. The DLC will come to other platforms later on. The pack includes three new multiplayer maps, a new War Mode map, and a new Zombies map. In other news, Call of Duty: WWII recently received a new update that buffs the sawed-off shotgun.

  • Star Wars: The Last Jedi Director Hilariously Proves One Controversial Moment Makes Perfect Sense

As more time passes since the release of Star Wars: The Last Jedi, several discussions about events in the film are taking place. Thankfully, director Rian Johnson seems to be addressing many of them head-on. Warning: Spoilers for Star Wars: The Last Jedi follow.

Days after explaining why he chose not to feature the Knights of Ren in the movie, Johnson is now sending a message to those who think Luke Skywalker projecting a vision of himself to fight Kylo Ren makes no sense in the Star Wars galaxy. As it turns out, not only does it make sense, but the director had the books to prove it.

In a series of tweets, Johnson went to his own personal library, where a copy of The Jedi Path is kept. The book, written by Daniel Wallace, is a guide to Jedi history and powers written for Lucasfilm. It’s essentially a real-world version of the sacred Jedi texts. In it is a passage about doppelgangers.

    — Rian Johnson (@rianjohnson) January 19, 2018

In full, the passage reads, “Doppelganger, or Simulfuturus, permits a Jedi to create a short-lived duplicate of himself or herself or an external object that is visually indistinguishable from the real item. Those who have perfected the ability can create phantoms of any person of their choosing or trick an enemy into seeing more objects, such as droids, than are actually present.”

Clearly, Johnson did his homework when it came to crafting the script to Star Wars: The Last Jedi. As for whether it changes how fans view the film is up to them. The director continuing to discuss the film a month after release just goes to show how important the subject matter is to him, though.

That’s reassuring, given that the future of Star Wars is in his hands. After JJ Abrams directs Episode IX, Johnson will develop his own trilogy to continue the franchise.
