  • Bungie Removing New Crucible Mode Breakthrough From Competitive Playlist

Bungie Removing New Crucible Mode Breakthrough From Competitive Playlist

Shortly after the release of Destiny 2’s Forsaken expansion, Bungie released Breakthrough, a new tug-of-war mode which had two teams facing off for control of two separate points in short rounds. However, after the mode dropped, players were able to find exploits in the mode, Bungie has removed it from the competitive playlist, in which players’ rank matters.

Since its release, players have found some issues with the mode that made the mode less fun to play than normal. One example was high-skilled players being able to lock weaker teams out of the first point entirely without actually capturing, which could make a match go on indefinitely and let the better team rack up kills in order to increase their overall kill-death ratio.

While it is currently being ousted from competitive, it will may still show up as the weekly featured playlist, where play is more casual and points matter far less.

In the meantime, Bungie is still taking feedback on the mode, so if you play the mode and have thoughts, let them know on their official forums.

Breakthrough has proven be a strange mode, with some lopsided balance issues beyond exploits. However, I like the idea of something other than Control entering rotation, so I’m hoping Bungie can iron out the issues.

  • Konami Confirms It Has Not Made P.T. Inaccessible To Those Who Already Have It On Their Console

Earlier this week, rumors were swirling after a post on Reddit showed that a recent update to P.T., a playable teaser (hence the name, of course) for Konami’s canceled Silent Hills game, made it inaccessible even to those who already had it downloaded on their console. Currently, it can no longer be purchased or re-downloaded by users who own it, but the assumption that if you hadn’t deleted it you’d be able to play it for the foreseeable future.

In the wake of these rumors, Konami has issued a statement to Game Informer confirming this update does not exist. “After our investigation we can confirm that there have been no Konami or PlayStation Network(PSN) update that would have affected or prevent access to the game,” it said.

This indicates the Reddit post in question is likely fake, and was posted in order to anger or worry fans, fittingly enough, on Halloween.

It’s good to know Konami hasn’t maliciously released a patch so people couldn’t play P.T. anymore, but it’d be even better to know the company released a patch to actually make it playable and re-downloadable.

  • Ubisoft Removing Graphic Imagery From Rainbow Six Siege As It Expands To Asian Market

Ubisoft Removing Graphic Imagery From Rainbow Six Siege As It Expands To Asian Market

Ubisoft Montreal is currently prepping its immensely popular tactical FPS, Rainbow Six Siege, for the Asian market. This means making some aesthetic changes to the game across all regions, which includes removing most of the graphic imagery from the game.

On its official blog, the studio explains the changes apply to all version of the game so it can focus on maintaining and developing for a single version, without having to worry about regional differences. “This will allow us to be more agile as a development team, and address issues more quickly,” it said. Of course, the team is making it clear none of these changes will have impact on gameplay.

The team also posted examples of what it’s changing in an upcoming patch. Knives in the kill feed (which indicate melee kills) are changing to fists, slot and gambling machines are all gone, and neon light which first had an outline of a nude woman is now just a hand. Most notably for the Chinese market, all skulls have been removed or altered, putting Siege in line with many international games which do the same, like Dota 2 and World of Warcraft. While there’s no law that bans images of skulls or skeletons outright, many games make these changes for cultural regions, as skeletons are heavily frowned upon in China.

For a look at what those changes look like, make sure to take a look at the game’s official blog.

  • What To Watch This Weekend: Blizzcon, Extra Life, And League Of Legends

What To Watch This Weekend: Blizzcon, Extra Life, And League Of Legends

Although you should be watching our Extra-Life stream today, there are a few other events going on this weekend, so I guess it can’t hurt to offer a few suggestions as to what else you might want to watch. At the same time, of course.

First up, Game Informer has its annual Extra-Life marathon! We’ll be streaming for 25 hours (daylight savings, y’all) with some cool games, lots of auctions (the proceeds of which go to charity, mind you), and, as always, shenanigans. (Stream and Schedule)

Fnatic and Invictus Gaming’s League of Legends squads have proven themselves all throughout the playoffs, but only one can walk away with the title. The match has already wrapped up, but make sure to check out the VODs if you want to avoid spoilers. (Stream)

On the fighting game side of things, Game Tyrant is a Smash Bros.-oriented event, with singles and doubles events for every title in the series. (Streams and Schedule)

Among the many panels and ceremonies going on at Blizzcon this weekend, there’ll be major tournaments at the event for OverwatchHeroes of the StormWorld of WarCraft, Hearthstone, and StarCraft. (Streams and Schedule)

Rainbow Six Siege brings its action to Canada for its (surprise!) Canadian Finals, in which Team Canada takes Grizzlys for the top prize. (Stream)

The tenth season of the Dreamleague tournament series wraps up this weekend, which should make a nice Dota 2 appetizer for the first major of the next season next week. (Stream / Schedule)

That’s it for this weekend! Let us know if we missed an event, or if there’s a scene you’d like us to cover, in the comments.

  • Valve Hosting $10,000 Arifact Tournament Next Week

Valve Hosting $10,000 Arifact Tournament Next Week

Valve has announced that, in preparation for the company’s first new game release in some time, it will be holding a 128-person Artifact tournament with a prize pool of $10,000 next week.

“On November 10-11, the Artifact Preview Tournament will feature 128 players competing over a prize pool of USD $10,000,” Valve wrote in a press release. “Hosted by Beyond The Summit and broadcast on SteamTV, the all-draft event will feature a 7-round Swiss bracket on Saturday. A top 8 single-elimination bracket will decide the winner on Sunday. Both days begin at 9:00 a.m. PST.”

The tournament uses an in-game tournament system for its structure which will be available to all players when the client launches. It’s an interesting way to get eyes on your game ahead of launch, as money usually does not get put into play until after a game has released.

Artifact launches on November 28, but a beta is scheduled for nine days before that on November 19.

  • 12 Things You May Have Missed In The Smash Bros. Ultimate Direct

12 Things You May Have Missed In The Smash Bros. Ultimate Direct

Yesterday, Nintendo aired the final Super Smash Bros. Ultimate direct. With over 70 characters and a ton of assist trophies, a ton of little references, nods, and things you might otherwise have not noticed pass by really quickly during the 40-minute Direct. You can take a look at a few of them right here!

Ken’s Trailer References Evo Moment 37

Back in 2004, Evo was a much smaller event than it is now. The smaller hall pales in comparison to the tournament that now takes over a giant arena at Mandalay Bay, but one of biggest moments in fighting game history happened long before the scene blew up. In a match between Justin Wong and Daigo Umehara in Street Fighter III: Third Strike, Wong’s Chun Li had Umehara’s Ken on the ropes in a semifinal match. Wong used Chun Li’s Super Art, a series of kicks, against Umehara, who managed to perfectly parry all 15 hits, and finish him off with his own Super Art. The moment, while not as extensive here, is reproduced at the end of Ken’s trailer in the Direct.

Incineroar’s Darkest Lariat Gets A Zangief Reference

During Incineroar’s move explanation, Smash Bros. director Masahiro Sakurai says that Darkest Lariat is Incineroar’s signature move, which spins him around with his arms out. “Perhaps it’s something of a red cyclone,” Sakurai states, referencing the nickname for Street Fighter II character Zangief. The Russian wrestler has a similar move which, resemblant to Incineroar’s trailer, allows him to dodge projectiles. Incineroar’s version blocks them, however, rather than letting them pass through. Sakurai, before he directed the Super Smash Bros. series, was a competitive Street Fighter II player.

Wily’s Assist Trophy References The Time Mega Man Tried To Kill Him

While Wily has gotten on his knees and begged Mega Man to let him go quite often, this assist trophy references one of the darker ones. The trophy itself is of Wily Capsule 7, one of the most frustrating final Wily fights in the series, as he produces energy balls that home in on poor Mega Man. After being defeated, Wily falls to the ground. In both the Japanese and western versions, Mega Man threatens to end Wily for good and Wily begs for his life. It diverges a little here depending on the version you’re playing. In the Japanese release, Mega Man simply stays silent, hesitates, and Wily gets away. In the American version, Mega Man says he is more than just a robot, and punctuates his point by yelling “Die, Wily!” who then gets away, anyway. In the Smash Bros. reference, Isabelle breaks Wily’s capsule and then lets him go, because Isabelle threatening to kill someone would be weird.

Guile Is Executing A Turtling Strategy

Guile joins as an assist trophy, coming in with his giant vertical hair and charge moves. As a trophy, Guile sits crouched, intercepting anyone that comes his way with a Flash Kick in the face. If you throw projectiles at him, he’ll block them, because he’s currently holding Down and Back while he charges the move. It’s the most common way for people to play Guile, as charge characters (characters that hold directions rather than execute motions) are primarily defensive. Guile is sitting in the corner and waiting for the opponent to jump in. Also fun note: this is the second time a character in the game and an assist trophy have been related. Guile is Ken’s brother-in-law, with Ken married to Guile’s wife’s sister, Eliza. The other example is Waluigi to Wario, probably…who really knows with those two.

Akira References Other Virtua Fighter Characters

The very blocky Akira makes his third fighting game crossover appearance in Smash, with Dead or Alive and Fighters Megamix predating this one. In his short footage, Akira squares off against Zero Suit Samus in her glossy two-piece outfit, and then against Wolf. Samus is referencing Sarah Bryant, another pony-tailed blonde character who wears a glossy blue outfit from Virtua Fighter. Wolf is a stand-in for, well, Wolf, the red-haired fighter that frequently ends up as Akira’s rival. Samus even tries a low kick on Akira before he blocks and pushes her away, a reference to how the meta surrounding Virtua Fighter heavily emphasized how quick and powerful low attacks are, which meant that everyone eventually knew to expect them.

    Chibi Robo Fights Off Smogglings

In the Mii Fighter customization reel, it briefly shows a Mii wearing a Chibi Robo outfit, who then knocks away several negative-colored Kirbys. These little guys are referencing the Wal-Mart-exclusive DS title, Chibi Robo Park Patrol, which almost no one played. Kirby is supposed to be a Smoggling, a little black puff of pollution created by a not-very-friendly enemy.

Not Every Third Party Seemingly Agreed To Watching Their Characters Die

In the cutscene introducing World of Light, Smash Bros. Ultimate’s single player mode, a few third party characters can be seen, but not everyone. Capcom consented to letting Mega Man face off against the ethereal eldritch horror seen in the distance, but neither Ryu or Ken were willing to take part. Street Fighter is owned by Capcom U.S.A., which means they might not have been as interested in seeing Ryu explode into light. Both Simon and Snake are seen at the beginning and both presumably get captured by the light, you can only really infer it from Snake’s box being hit. Richter, meanwhile, is nowhere to be seen. Cloud is also completely missing, though perhaps he has simply had enough of angel-winged enemies bathed in golden light causing the apocalypse. Both Sonic and Bayonetta are directly shown getting hit, so Sega was all on board this train.

Shulk Saw The Future Because Of His Sword

Much like he can within Xenoblade Chronicles, Shulk saw that everyone was about to lose. Also much like Xenoblade, there isn’t always really anything he can do about it. The vision comes too late, and his attempts to warn the others seemingly don’t work. It is theorized that Shulk used the Monado’s power to help Kirby get away by making him faster, which is an interesting thing to do with your last available second.

Sonic Got Taken Because He Tried To Save Pikachu

As Sonic is running away, he slows down slightly to grab on to Pokemon’s mascot character, Pikachu. The electric mouse is lagging behind and reaches out for Sonic, who also reaches out to the Pokemon, but Pikachu gets taken. Sonic is shocked for a second, slowing down again, before also being hit. It makes sense, because of course Sonic the Hedgehog would prioritize saving small woodland animals over living to fight another day. That’s pretty much his raison d’etre.

Bayonetta Had To Cooldown After Three Dodges

In the Bayonetta games, dodges are extremely useful and powerful. You can basically avoid ever being hit in the game if you master dodge. To increase the window a little bit, the games have a purchasable skill called Bat Within, which lets you miss your dodge window slightly and negate the damage of getting hit by transforming into a swarm of bats. To balance this out, if you spam dodge without a little cooldown, she can’t dodge again for about one second. Here, Bayonetta backflips out of the way, gets grazed and uses Bat Within, then air-dodges coming out of Bat Within. She’s run out of dodges and, judging by the resigned look on her face, knows she’s through when she gets hit by the light.

    Palutena’s Sacrifice Doesn’t Help

When Palutena, Pit, and Dark Pit attempt to escape from the light, the goddess stops and tries to use her all-powerful reflect to keep the light at bay. Since she guides their flight paths, she keeps them moving past her against their will, so they keep flying and get some distance from the attack. Palutena is unsuccessful and gets absorbed. While Pit and Dark Pit presumably could have still gotten away, Palutena getting disappeared robs Pit of his flying powers and he stumbles in the air and gets taken. Dark Pit, who was born as a clone of Pit from the Mirror of Truth, does not depend on Palutena’s powers to fly, but his bond as Pit progeny means he loses those powers when Pit does, anyway.

The Reveal Trailer Hinted At World Of Light

Way back earlier this year, when Super Smash Bros. for Switch was revealed and no one was quite sure if it was a port or a new game, there was a somewhat strange trailer. The Inklings were playing around when the world’s lights shut off and the roster of Smash Bros., covered in an oppressive darkness, stood underneath the logo. The silhouetted images stared at the Inklings in an oddly ghastly way, but their eyes were never seen. Now we can guess that the trailer was the first hint at the new story mode, which presents the clones of Super Smash Bros. fighters with red eyes and a preoccupation with fighting. The last shot of World of Light shows an incredibly similar image, but reversing the silhouette so we can make out more details.

Regardless of what you think of the series, it is undeniable that they are filled to the brim with details most people will never notice, but fans will appreciate. You can find out what else one might not notice at first blush when the game releases on Nintendo Switch on December 7.

  • Weekend Warrior – Extra Life Is This Weekend

Everyone is still riding the Red Dead Redemption train, but don’t forget to watch our 25-hour Extra Life stream starting this Saturday, November 3 at 8 AM CT. You can donate here. We have amazing auctions, fun video games, and ridiculous antics all lined up for you! Head here to learn more and see our full schedule.

Are you doing anything fun this weekend? Let us know in the comments below!

Brian Shea (@BrianPShea) – I’ll be participating in Game Informer’s Extra Life stream this weekend, so I’ll be playing games on stream and you should donate to help us raise money for a local children’s hospital! When I’m not on camera, I’ll probably be playing Red Dead Redemption 2 and Overwatch.

Javy Gwaltney – Besides partaking in the Extra Life festivities, I’m planning on bunkering down with my partner at a café on Sunday to play through a chunk of Diablo 3 together as we sip coffee. It’ll be a nice weekend of raising money for hospitals and beating up waves of zombies.

Suriel Vasquez (@SurielVazquez) – Looking to git (that’s Western for “get”) my Arthur Morgan a Whisper of the Worm so I have a DPS alternative to Sleeper whenever they get around to further nerfing it. I’m also on vacation next week so I’m going to catch up on TV shows like Better Call Saul, The Chilling Adventures of Sabrina, and The Haunting of Hill House. And I’ll “giddying on up” to the DMV at some point to wait several hours so I can get one quick thing done. It’s like being at an amusement park!

Kyle Hilliard (@KyleMHilliard) – I’m still playing a whole bunch of Red Dead Redemption II, trying to come up with ideas for a second Sick Stunts video! And also, to absorb the story and atmosphere, I guess. I also took home our vault copy of My Hero One’s Justice to check that out. I am… pessimistic about it, but the anime it is based on is one of my favorites in years. Otherwise, I will be making sure my sick kid is less sick by the time Monday rolls around.

Ben Hanson (@yozetty) – Extra Life, baby! Tune in for some amaaaazing auctions and some good ol’ fashioned fun!

Leo Vader (@leovader) – Extra Life on Saturday from 8 AM to 8 AM!!! And then if it’s anything like last year, I’ll be going home and collapsing on my bed fully clothed and sleeping for 12 hours. Extra Life is gonna be super fun but I bet everyone else already said that. Or at least they better have! See you there!!!

Jill Grodt (@Finruin) – I’m committed to the long-haul for the Extra Life stream, wish me luck and donate!

  • Bryce Harper Revealed As The Cover Athlete For MLB The Show 19

Bryce Harper Revealed As The Cover Athlete For MLB The Show 19

The 2012 National League Rookie of the Year, 2015 National League MVP, and 2018 Homerun Derby champ, Bryce Harper will be gracing the cover of this year’s MLB The Show 19.

Because it’s still not known where Mondo will go next season, the cover art for the game currently has the six-time all-star depicted without a jersey. This morning on PlayStation.blog, San Diego Studio announced that it was partnering with the outfielder to reveal his next team on the game’s final cover.

    https://twitter.com/PlayStation/status/1058375746127835138

According to the Chicago Tribune this morning, Haper’s prior team, the Washington Nationals will make Mondo an official qualifying offer before Friday’s deadline, which means he’ll likely reject the offer because it’s less than he made in 2018. Harper became a free agent this off season after the Washington Nationals had a less than stellar run in the 2017-18 season.

MLB The Show 19 will be hitting store shelves March 26 and is available now for pre-order. If you still haven’t played MLB The Show 18, you can check out our review to see if it’s a home run.
