Battlefield 1 Players Cease Fire To Observe 100th Anniversary Of WWI

With today marking the 100th anniversary of the end of World War I, players in Battlefield 1 briefly stopped shooting one another, at their 11 a.m. local time in Melbourne, to observe the armistice.

11 a.m. on November 11 is when Veterans Day ceremonies have a two-minute moment of silence. While not everyone complied in-game, most did. It’s really neat to see a group of players have a moment of silence in a video game.

The cease fire was captured on video and posted on Reddit. EA DICE’s Jan David Hassel took note of it on Twitter, which you can view below (the video is in the tweet as well).

“This is the 100 Year Anniversary of the End of WW1. On the 11th Hour we stopped fighting.”

  • McDonald’s Canada Confirms Ronald Will Not Be A Fighter In Super Smash Bros. Ultimate

The internet is a weird place. With rumors spreading about the upcoming Super Smash Bros. Ultimate, one fan decided to ask McDonald’s Canada about the inclusion of a certain famous clown mascot. Why not, right?

McDonald’s Canada promptly tweeted back a response, confirming that there are no current plans to bring Ronald McDonald to the upcoming game.

Hi Chris. Although seeing Ronald McDonald battle other characters in Smash Bros would be pretty neat, he will not be making an appearance in the new game as of right now.

  • More Than 29,000 Dominoes Used In Incredible Red Dead Redemption II Tribute

Red Dead Redemption II has been out for a few weeks now, and it been receiving massive success and record-breaking sales. YouTuber TheDominoKing, known best for his pop-culture and video game-related domino masterpieces, has dedicated his latest project to the massive open-world Western.

With 29,375 dominoes, TheDominoKing portrays Arthur Morgan, Red Dead’s logo, and one of Arthur’s quotes. It took a week to create, and he started before he even played the game.

“I started working on this video before I even had the chance to play the game, so I had high hopes for the game, which I can gladly say it lived up to,” writes TheDominoKing in the YouTube description.

You can watch the short but impressive video below.

  • See How The DS Was Able To Pull Off The Legend Of Zelda: Spirit Tracks In This Video

See How The DS Was Able To Pull Off The Legend Of Zelda: Spirit Tracks In This Video

The DS Legend of Zelda games are some of the series’ most forgotten. Eschewing traditional controls for a purely touched-based approach, both Phantom Hourglass and Spirit Tracks split the Zelda community. I for one love their dungeons designs, but think Phantom Hourglass had issues with the central dungeon you had to revisit multiple times, while Spirit Tracks felt too small for a Zelda game and had several frustrating segments. Its central dungeon, however, was pretty good.

Anyway, the latest episode of youtuber Shesez’s series Boundary Break takes a look at some of the tricks that makes Spirit Tracks tick. While there’s a classic movement trick pulled off here (moving the environment around an object instead of moving the object itself in order to simulate movement), there are some more interesting things to observe, such as several rooms reserved exclusively for your chats with a single side character, how objects in the world exist only when they’re in your view (this is fairly common in video game and is known as “culling,” but this is a pretty extreme case).

  • Forza Horizon 4's First Expansion Takes Players To Fortune Island

Forza Horizon 4's First Expansion Takes Players To Fortune Island

Forza Horizon 4’s first expansion has been announced. Fortune Island whisks players away to the remote northern reaches of the British Isles.

Weather plays a big role in Fortune Island, as extreme conditions bring about lightning storms, dangerous cliffside dirt roads, and a gorgeous backdrop of aurora borealis as players hunt for hidden treasure.

Fortune Island launches on Xbox One and PC on December 13. The DLC is included with the Expansions Bundle, which grants access to two expansions for a reduced cost of $35. Owners of the Ultimate Edition or the Ultimate Add-Ons Bundle will get the expansion for no additional charge.

  • Destiny 2 Focusing On Dedicated Players Going Forward, Says Director

Earlier this week, Activision announced in an earnings call it was disappointed with the sales of Destiny, one of its major franchises, and promised it would have new ways to monetize its games and would be putting out content more frequently as a result (whether this applies to Destiny 2, specifically, is likely the implication but not entirely guaranteed). Bungie, however, doesn’t feel disappointed at all, according to the current director of the franchise.

Destiny director Luke Smith has taken to Twitter to express his lack of pride in his team. “We are not disappointed with Forsaken,” he posted. “We set out to build a game that Destiny players would love, and at Bungie, we love it too.”

Smith also stated something that could mark a shift in direction for the series in the coming years. “Building Destiny for players who love it is and will remain our focus going forward.”

    https://twitter.com/thislukesmith/status/1061317979881656320

While the statement sounds boilerplate at first, it’s striking for a couple of reasons. First in light of the perception of Destiny 2 at launch as favoring casual players over dedicated players (and suffering from some longevity problems as a result), Forsaken was a shift in the opposite direction, emphasizing how the expansion would keep hardcore fans busy for months. Smith’s statement makes it clear this will be the focus for Destiny 2’s expansions going forward (the next minor expansion, Black Armory, is planned for December).

Second, it could be indicative of the series’ long-term outlook; it could be a sign the company does not plan to return to the casual-first strategy it implemented with Destiny 2 at first whenever its proper sequel rolls around.

For more on Destiny 2: Forsaken, check out our glowing review of the the game’s launch state.

Destiny, and Destiny 2 in particular, has always struggled with being a big-budget shooter with a proper “campaign” and setpieces, and an MMO-lite the focused on offering a satisfying loot grind. I’m wondering, with this stated new focus, if Bungie is settling on the latter, focusing less on making the kind of game fans of Halo’s single-player campaigns might want and focusing more on the fans who stick around for the long haul, even if that means making less money on direct sales. As someone who’s regularly played Forsaken for the last couple of months, I’m hoping that’s the case.

  • Fallout 76 Has A 54GB Day-One Patch

    Fallout 76 Has A 54GB Day-One Patch

You’ll have to do quite a bit of downloading before heading into Appalachia when Fallout 76 hits on November 14, as the issues in the beta have prompted the release of a fairly large day-one patch.

PlayStation Universe reports the game will be receiving a 54.6GB day-one patch on addressing many of the issues players have found in the beta phase. This is on top of the base 45GB install players who download the game will have to make, for a total of nearly 100GB of data players have to make plans to clear out of their hard drive and plan around with regard to their internet provider’s data cap.

Beyond major bug fixes, Bethesda also plans to improve the game after launch, with a larger stash size and improvements to the social interface coming after the game releases.

  • What To Watch This Weekend: Artifact, Counter-Strike, And Melty Blood

What To Watch This Weekend: Artifact, Counter-Strike, And Melty Blood

After the cavalcade of major events we had last weekend, it should be no surprise that lots of scenes (especially those revolving Blizzard games) are on cooldown. Valve is more than happy to carry to baton this weekend, however, as it’s running tournaments for its three major games. There’s also a fun Street Fighter tournament, as well as a grassroots anime fighting game tournament to keep your eye on.

With Artifact hitting later this month, Valve is having a preview tournament for the game today and tomorrow starting at 11am CST (that’s right now!) Saturday and Sunday. Featuring top talent from both Dota 2 and other card games, it acts as the last taste of high-level action you’ll likely see of the game before the beta hits November 19. (Stream)

Speaking of Dota 2, the first major of the 2018-2019 season, the Kuala Lumpur Major, starts in just a few hours, as over a dozen teams with new rosters test their mettle in the what will be the last tournament before the major 7.20 update upends the meta again. (Stream / Schedule)

Rounding out our Valve-stuffed weekend, Counter-Strike: Global Offensive heads to Chicago for its next IEM tournament which offers a $100,000 prize to first place. (Stream / Schedule)

The Red Bull Kumite is your big Street Fighter V major for the week. Watch as 16 of the world’s best players face off in Paris, France, inside the event’s signature cage match setup. (Stream / Schedule)

If you’re looking for something a little more low-key and homespun, the Climax of Night tournament is a major community-created tournament for under-the-radar anime games including Under Night In-Birth Exe: Late[st]Melty Blood Actress Again Current Code, and Dengeki Bunko: Fighting Climax Ignition. (Streams and Schedule)

That’s it for this weekend! Let us know if we missed an event, or if there’s a scene you’d like us to cover, in the comments.
