Leisure Suit Larry Creator Lists Source Code For His Classic Games On eBay

Al Lowe, the creator of the Leisure Suit Larry games as well as a number of other classic Sierra titles, is selling some of his source code for classic Sierra projects on eBay. In an interview with YouTuber MetalJesusRocks Lowe said, “I’m 72 years old, and none of my kids want this junk! Does anybody?”

You can check out all the eBay offerings by heading here. Some highlights include the source code for Leisure Suit Larry currently going for $7,600 and the source code for Leisure Suit Larry 2 going for over $7,800 at the time of this posting.

You can check out more about the whole endeavour by watching the video below where he says, “I backed everything up because I knew Sierra didn’t.”

It’s worth noting that Lowe says he hasn’t tested any of the discs recently, and that owning the source code obviously doesn’t mean you own the intellectual rights to the games, but it is an interesting piece of video game history.

    Our Take
This belongs in a museum! But I am glad Lowe is willing to part with it. I just hope that’s where it all lands – a museum.

  • Bethesda Permabans Homophobic Group In Fallout 76

Bethesda Permabans Homophobic Group In Fallout 76

There’s been a lot of news surrounding Bethesda’s new multiplayer Fallout game lately, most of it bad. Between rumors of a class-action lawsuit and accusations of false advertising, the publisher has had its hands full dealing with fan response. A new story about the people in the game, however, is one of the more disturbing things to come out from the game.

(Warning: The following story does its best to avoid using strong language, but it is unavoidable in some instances. Content warning for homophobic slurs.)

A Fallout 76 player named AJ tweeted out a video last night tagging Bethesda support showing harassment they received by players. In the video, AJ is confronted by a group of other players lead by a user named NathanTheHicc. Nathan’s beef, judging from his voice chat comments, is that he was there to kill AJ because he’s gay.

The voice chat in Fallout 76 is meant to work via proximity. That is, voice chat is always on if someone is talking, and you hear it if you’re close enough to them. When NathanTheHicc met with AJ and his friends earlier to ask for a Disease Cure item, one of AJ’s friends commented that Nathan’s outfit or character was cute. After an aggressively homophobic remark, Nathan disappeared. He reappeared later with friends, calling themselves “The Gay Eliminators,” to kill AJ.

Player Vs. Player, or PVP, in the game is also a little strange compared to most games of its ilk. After a certain level, players can opt into PVP using a toggle in the options, but the screen warns that players who opt out can still be killed by other players. If you opt out of PVP, it simply means that an attacker does minimal damage to you, meaning anyone intentionally trying to kill you would have to sit there and try for a while. Presumably, this method is to discourage grouping in big area-of-effect attacks while not letting players be killed if they don’t want to be.

This did not seem to deter NathanTheHicc, who encircled AJ with his group and proceeded to yell homophobic slurs and insults over the voice chat while doing infinitesimal damage. AJ figured they would eventually just get bored and leave, but they stuck around until AJ’s character was killed, prompting him to change servers.

Because there is no in-game report function, AJ took to Twitter with a recording of the incident. Bethesda’s Twitter account replied, sending him to a web-based report site, but the site didn’t work. In order to file a report, you need to upload video evidence, which AJ had. The problem is the site didn’t accept any video files.

“The tweet was forwarded to some community managers for the game and they were very kind and helpful,” AJ told Eurogamer. “We were given a link to report the players but had issues with it. The site asked for a video file of the incident but the accepted file types weren’t video files. So we couldn’t send one. For me, the page would not even load. It seems very difficult to report players.”

NathanTheHicc also uploaded video of the interaction to his YouTube channel and titled the video “Cleansing of the queers.”

When Eurogamer contacted Nathan, the apparent high school senior was more or less unrepentant. “My version of the incident is more or less the same as the public has taken it, the only differences being the fact that I don’t hate gay people. It was just a late night of having fun and after the first encounter (seen on my channel) we felt it would be fun to offend them somehow. You can call that evil but I think it’s just playful immaturity. I do not regret the incident. I will not apologize given the opportunity. I don’t plan on doing anything like this in the future but to be fair I didn’t plan the initial incident, I just found them and decided to go through with it.”

Bethesda initially banned him for three days while they investigated, but decided to up the punishment to a lifetime ban soon after, as well as the other players identified in the video.

I have a number of thoughts about this but it’s not easy to articulate them. If there are indeed people who think like NathanTheHicc does, that there’s not actually anything wrong with this, then I’m pretty much wordless at the thought of it existing in normal society. A high school senior should know better, yeah, but a person should be able to show more empathy than this. I’m also kind of aghast at how hard it seems to be to report a player in the game. Bethesda did not think a game where voice chat could not be turned off would warrant an in-game reporting system? They didn’t think having the web page tested beforehand would be important? It kind of makes me remember why I play my games without voice chat.

  • Weekend Warrior – I Choose You, Arthur Morgan!

Weekend Warrior – I Choose You, Arthur Morgan!

We’re getting close to December and a lot of the editors are starting to work out their games of the year list. That means many of us are trying to catch up on Red Dead Redemption II. It looks like the other most popular game this weekend is Pokémon Let’s Go, which seems like the furthest away from Red Dead you could get.

Are you doing anything fun this weekend? Let us know in the comment below!

Javy Gwaltney – I’m traveling this week so in my free time I’m working on becoming the best Pokémon catcher and completing my season journey for my monk character in Diablo 3. Those great rifts are no joke!

Jeff Cork – This weekend, I’m hoping to inch my way closer to Red Dead Redemption II’s credits. Just when I think I’m getting there, something new crops up. But I’m still trying to stay optimistic! Other than that, I’ll probably do some mystery heroes in Overwatch and play a little Let’s Go, Eevee! and see what all the fuss is about.

Kimberley Wallace (@kstar1785) – For the love of God, I need to finish Red Dead Redemption II. It is my mission. It’s the last game I’m really trying to wrap up for the year. Need to see where it lands on my GOTY list!

Kyle Hilliard (@KyleMHilliard) – I’ll be covering news a bit this weekend and getting a haircut – two things I haven’t done in a long time. Otherwise I will be checking out some lesser-played games for our end of the year discussions and trying to make some progress in Red Dead Redemption II. That game is super long.

Jill Grodt (@Finruin) – I’ve been getting really into Pokémon Let’s Go and I recently got drawn into Persona 5 again. I don’t know if I’ll get through either, but I’ll give it a good try! I’m also thinking I need to get out and experience some fun Minneapolis things while I have the chance, but it’s so cold outside!

Imran Khan (@imranzomg) – This weekend, I plan to do some GOTY voting cleanup. I’m going to revisit some games I have been pretty sure are on my list and play some stuff I haven’t gotten a chance to touch. I’m also playing Pokémon Let’s Go a lot, which I like more than I thought I would, but I absolutely can’t play docked. I was so excited to sit down and play Pokémon on my TV with a Pro controller and am inconsolable that I can’t. I am also going to watch Wreck-It Ralph 2 this weekend and do my best not to judge it for not being entirely about video games.

Leo Vader (@leovader) – The Ludum Dare game jam starts tonight, so I’m gonna see if I can whip something teeny up for that. If I find time, I’ll be playing more Red Dead Online, which I’m having fun in but also could complain about for hours! HAGS!!

  • Fortnite Account Merger Delayed To 2019

Fortnite Account Merger Delayed To 2019

The saga of Fortnite accounts in 2018 has been a roller coaster ride so far. When accounts that were ever used on the PlayStation 4 were unable to be used on Xbox One, people thought it was just a glitch. The ban on PS4 accounts on other systems became much more explicit when the Switch version came out this past June, confirming that Fortnite PS4 accounts were locked to that system by Sony fiat. The furor over this became so great that Sony ended up relenting on crossplay, freeing up those accounts to work on whatever system they need to.

In the meantime, however, players had created secondary accounts to get around Sony’s locks and made purchases on those accounts. Epic had promised the ability to merge accounts to put all those purchases on a single account, but is delaying that feature into 2019.

“Due to some ongoing technical concerns, we will be delaying the Account Merge feature until early next year,” Epic wrote in a blog post. “We want to make sure that this process is thoroughly tested and working properly before releasing it to those of you currently looking to transfer purchases from other accounts to your primary account. We’ll be sure to update you as we get closer to the release of the feature, which will include a web page on launch to help guide you through the flow!”

At the announcement of account merging, Epic was targeting a November 2 date. It’s now going to blow past that by at least a few months. So if you are still waiting to combine your accounts to get all your purchases under the same name, you’ll have to wait a little while longer.

  • Bethesda Reveals More On December Patches For Fallout 76

Bethesda Reveals More On December Patches For Fallout 76

Bethesda has unveiled the next round of patches for Fallout 76 – a game many have complained is overly buggy, even by Bethesda’s standards.

The new post by Bethesda contains more details on the specifics of each patch. On December 4, the first patch will bring additional stability to the servers and fix some bugs like getting stuck in power armor, bosses not dispensing appropriate loot, and C.A.M.P. stand-alone items disappearing when players relocate. The patch also includes a few quality-of-life improvements like increasing the stash box storage limit from 400 to 600 pounds and increasing automatic weapon damage by 20 percent.

As previously reported in an Inside the Vault letter, Bethesda also detailed its plans for the December 11 patch, which will allow players to respec their S.P.E.C.I.A.L. points, implement a push-to-talk setting for voice chat, and bring more improvements to its C.A.M.P. placement. Among other additions like new quests and vaults, Bethesda also mentioned plans to implement a faction-based PvP system in the letter. Thus far, many fans have found the game’s PvP to be inadequate.

Going forward, the developer also promised to reduce the size of the patches after complaints ensued over their very large November 19 patch. The next patch 1.0.2.0 will be approximately 3 GB for consoles and around 36 MB for PC.

So far, the game has sparked a bit of controversy with its issue-laden launch with some fans angered over a collector’s addition bag that isn’t exactly as advertised, and one law firm even soliciting players for a class-action lawsuit. For our take on the post-nuclear sim, you can go here.

There’s still a week to go, so hopefully we start seeing more art from different companies. Hopefully Square Enix contributes some art, though Tetsuya Nomura did provide a poster for Cloud’s inclusion when he was announced as DLC in Super Smash Bros. for Wii U and 3DS. (Update: He did!)

Super Smash Bros. Ultimate’s director recently explained why Kirby became the hero of the game’s story mode, and also told us how he feels about some fans being disappointed by character choice. Super Smash Bros. Ultimate is releasing on December 6 on Nintendo Switch.

  • Red Dead Redemption Online Open To Everyone Today

Red Dead Redemption Online Open To Everyone Today

If you have a copy of Red Dead Redemption II and connection to internet, you can now ride out into the wild world wide web. Red Dead Redemption II Online is available for everyone today. You can experience many activities from the single-player game, like hunting, fishing, and treasure-hunting, but now you can do it with friends while staying on guard for other hostile players. Not sure what to expect? Watch our latest New Gameplay Today segment where the Game Informer posse accepted some morally questionable missions then jumped into a gun fight.

To get you started on the right foot, Rockstar has a list of tips and tricks for navigating the online experience:

Character creation: Tap X/A to enter the customize section, click R3/Right-Stick to quickly see your character’s face without facial hair, and Tap L1/LB and R1/RB to quickly check your character’s profile.

Player menu: Tap d-pad left to bring up the player menu where you can see other players in the session and your friends, form or join a Posse, manage your camp and horses, quickly join matches or series, and adjust your voice chat options.

Fast travel: You can fast travel via signposts.

Co-op story-based missions: Visit Horley in Blackwater to start the quest A Land of Opportunities.

Treasure maps: You’ll receive treasure maps when you hit rank 10 and every 5 ranks after that. You also have a chance to pick one up when looting enemy bodies, after clearing a hideout, or surviving an ambush.

Catalogue: Hold down left on the d-pad to bring up the catalogue to pick up provisions, tonics, weapons, and ammo. Once purchased, you can recover most of your goods from your camp’s lockbox or the post office. New weapons can be found on your horse and clothing will be added to your wardrobe. Any horses or saddles will go to the stable.

Ability cards: Ability cards have 3 categories – combat, recovery, and defense – which you can upgrade and switch out at any time.

  • Fire Emblem Gets Its Own Expo In Japan

Fire Emblem Gets Its Own Expo In Japan

Fire Emblem’s resurgence in popularity continues, so much so the series is getting its own expo.

Today, Nintendo and Intelligent Systems revealed a live event is set for May 4 at the Zepp Tokyo venue.

Details are still scarce on what the expo exactly entails, but it was teased that more information would come in an upcoming broadcast for the Japanese trading card game, Fire Emblem 0 (Cipher) on December 8.

If you plan to make the trek to Japan, ticket sales start on December 28 at 6:00 PM JST (4:00 AM CST).  You can visit the official site here.

Chances are slim, but I’d also love to see this expo come to North America. The cosplay is going to be amazing.  In the meantime, let’s hope we get more information regarding the upcoming Switch game, Fire Emblem: Three Houses soon.

  • Pokémon Go Teases Trainer Versus Trainer Battles

Pokémon Go Teases Trainer Versus Trainer Battles

This morning, the official Pokémon Go twitter account tweeted an image that raises a lot of questions.

    ❗❗? pic.twitter.com/2Zg5PvNUv6

    — Pokémon GO (@PokemonGoApp) November 30, 2018

The image shows your standard Pokémon Go trainer standing on what appears to be a makeshift arena, like what you would see in the core games or anime when one trainer battles another. This could be a tease for battles against NPC trainers, but the more likely conclusion to jump to is it’s a tease for players versus player battles – something that has been conspicuously absent from Pokémon Go since its release in 2016.

For more on Pokémon Go, head here for a detailed strategy guide for the whole experience.

    [Source: @PokemonGoApp]

    Our Take
When the game originally launched, players (and I include myself in this group) were flabbergasted that Pokémon Go game did not have trading and battling. They are major components of the series, after all. It was odd, but for me trading was really the only thing I wanted. I am personally not interested in battling other Pokémon Go trainers, but if this is in fact what Niantic is teasing, it’s definitely a big deal and something that is long overdue for the game.
