Apex Legends Player Takes Over Airport TV to Play Ranked Match

An actual apex legend plugged his PlayStation 4 into a TV at Portland International Airport on Thursday to play Apex Legends.

According to Oregon Live (via Kotaku), the man commandeered a TV that was displaying a map of the airport. Security officials walked over and asked the traveler to stop playing. Kama Simonds from Port of Portland said that the man “very politely” asked if he can finish his game. Security denied his request, and the man stopped his game.

“Apparently it was a very polite and cordial interaction,” Simonds said.

The television takeover occurred early in the morning on Thursday. Simonds said this was, “a good reminder of what not to do at the airport.”

US Gamer pointed out that the man decided to play a ranked match judging by a badge on the corner of the screen.

Apex Legends launched almost a year ago on February 4, 2019. The game has continued adding new events including the Grand Soirée event, which is currently going on until January 28. One of the events is an option to play in third-person mode.

The CEO of Respawn has just taken over duties as head of DICE LA and is currently working on an original IP that has yet to be announced. Good news for our airport friend, a mobile version of Apex Legends is still on the way.

  • Futuristic PS5 Fan Design Is so Stylish

    Phwoar.

Who wouldn’t want to make this a part of their setup come the end of 2020? Another enthusiastic PlayStation 5 fan has shared their interpretation of the next-generation console following one more series of fake leaks, and it’s a design with a real look to the future.

As you can see in the images below, from Twitter user @FalconDesign3D, the design is a rather cool, futuristic take on the upcoming Sony machine. Much like the design of the PlayStation 4, it is defined by a feature which almost splits the console in half. Rather than going through the centre, this time it’s on a diagonal path — creating a console which wouldn’t look too out of place 20 years down the line.

  • Guilty Gear Strive Is Coming To Arcades–In Japan, At Least

Guilty Gear Strive has been confirmed for PlayStation 4, but if you’re in Japan, you’ll also have the option of playing it in an arcade. The arcade release of the game was reported on Arc System Works’ website, and was picked up on and translated by Gematsu.

While it’s possible that the cabinets will make their way outside of the country, they’re bound to be rare–arcades are still fairly common in Tokyo and other areas of Japan. For most players, the PlayStation 4 version will remain the most accessible.

A new trailer for Faust, a returning character first seen in the game’s name announcement trailer, has also been revealed. You can watch it below.

A demo of the arcade version will be playable at Japan Amusement Expo 2020 in February; otherwise, a closed beta of the game is coming later this year, although details have not been announced yet.

The new Guilty Gear has been described by the game’s general director as “a full-frontal confrontation with the essence of the fighting game genre.”

  • This Xbox Adaptive Controller Mod Makes It Nintendo Switch Compatible

The Xbox Adaptive Controller has been an important step for making games more accessible, but it’s had an obvious downside–it’s only compatible with Xbox. However, one man has found a way to change this, customizing an Xbox Adaptive Controller to work on Switch for his daughter.

Rory Steel, head of the Digital Jersey Academy, tweeted out a video of his daughter playing The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild on Switch using a heavily customized Xbox Adaptive Controller. There’s a lot of cables involved, and he says that this is only the first version, with further iterations to come. But it all works, and his daughter is clearly very pleased.

Finished! Ava gives my homemade #accessibility controller V1.0 the thumbs up. She can play @Nintendo #BreathoftheWild on her #switch like her friends now. All thanks to @Microsoft ? #adaptiveController #XAC @brycej @ArranDyslexia @shanselman pic.twitter.com/dOhGnUFZa0

    — Rory Steel (@JerseyITGuy) January 19, 2020

Xbox boss Phil Spencer has shared the tweet as well, calling it “incredible.” Steel posted an in-progress photo earlier, too, showing how much wire work was involved. He completed the project in a single weekend.

The #1 quality of a digital professional… Patience… Making inroads with the aid of coffee! The controller project is on target for this afternoon. #accessibility @Nintendo #switch @Microsoft #adaptiveController pic.twitter.com/U5z1xjzROe

Microsoft said back at E3 2018 that it would love to see the controller working on PS4 and Switch, and while official support has not come, it looks like it’s technically possible on Switch at least.

First Full Trailer for ‘Tread’ Documentary About Colorado’s ‘Killdozer’

    Tread Poster

“Enough is enough! I’m not going to take it anymore.” Gravitas has unveiled an official trailer for an indie documentary titled Tread, telling the story of the infamous “Killdozer” incident that took place in Granby, Colorado in 2004. Pushed to his breaking point, a master welder in a small town at the foot of the Rocky Mountains quietly fortifies a bulldozer with 30 tons of concrete and steel and heads out to destroy those he believes have wronged him. Though it was armed with three high-powered firearms, no one but the driver was killed – after the police confronted him. His name was Marvin Heemeyer. Tread explores the polarizing perspectives on this man, his motives, and what drove him to the breaking point. This premiered at the SXSW Film Festival and will be out to watch at the end of February. I have to admit this certainly intrigues me, another “true crime story” with much more going on than what’s seen on the surface. Take a look below. ›››

  • NHS Wants Devs to Think of the Children as Loot Boxes Prep Kids for Gambling Addiction

    Never-ending story.

The loot box back-and-forth rumbles on, with British health organisation NHS urging game developers to think more carefully about so-called “surprise mechanics” which could lead children into gambling addictions. A strongly worded statement from mental health director Claire Murdoch called for a crackdown on loot boxes in games kids play, as the NHS prepares to open 14 new gambling clinics across the UK.

Murdoch said: “Frankly no company should be setting kids up for addiction by teaching them to gamble on the content of these loot boxes. No firm should sell to children loot box games with this element of chance, so yes, those sales should end. Young people’s health is at stake, and although the NHS is stepping up with these new, innovative services available to families through our Long Term Plan, we cannot do this alone, so other parts of society must do what they can to limit risks and safeguard children’s well being.”

  • Talking Point: In a Week Full of PS4 Game Delays, Are You Disappointed?

    DelayStation 4.

It’s been a bit of a strange week in the world of video games, hasn’t it? In amongst Sony’s withdrawal from E3 2020 and all but confirmation of Horizon: Zero Dawn heading to PC with more PlayStation 4 exclusives set to follow, two of the year’s biggest games were delayed. Final Fantasy VII Remake was pushed back by a month while Cyberpunk 2077 won’t be launching until September. They’re the two big hitters, but the delays of Marvel’s Avengers and Marvel’s Iron Man VR solidified a stretch of five days where it feels like we’ve put the 2020 celebration on ice. Of course, every PS4 game mentioned is still set to launch this year, although it’s impossible to ignore the sense of disappointment which comes with every delay.

That’s not disappointment in the teams at the likes of CD Projekt Red and Square Enix working their collective butts off to get these monumental projects ready in time for release, however. It feels like an all round groan and acceptance of what was inevitable. These are titles that will define the current generation and so they need as much time to cook as possible, but when it comes to actually covering them, it has made for a week of unease.
